[F18;SP] Restocking Supplies | <<Nature's Treasure: Little Eden>>

Recommended Posts

Nari stepped off the teleporter onto the eighteenth floor, her nose wrinkling in shock at the smell of it all. She'd heard that the floor itself was essentially one large swamp, but she hadn't expected that Cardinal would perfect them smell so well. "Well, credit where credit is due, I guess. Hey, Yuki?"

The small fox bound up beside Nari, yipping in response and holding up a paw in an indignant manner. She couldn't help but shake her head in amusement at the reaction of the fox. Not that Nari disagreed, her own boots getting slimed by the general fauna that seemed to cover...well, almost everything. She tore her gaze away from the fox and her boots, looking for any sign of the owner of the garden that she was trying to visit. The information broker had sold Nari the details at a low cost, but something about their manner had made her wonder just how trust worthy their information actually was.

She stepped aside as she heard the teleporter activate again, her eyes split between trying to see who stepped off, and where Nemo could possibly be. Which was why it took her a moment to recognise the blonde haired woman who appeared, stopping short as she spotted Nari standing a few steps down. "Nari! Hey! It's been...well, a long time! Odd, finding you here. Looking for Nemo as well?"

She nodded in response to the question, smiling up at Onóra as she considered her response. The girl was decked out in soft leather armours, with a longsword at her hip. Nothing overtly fancy, but far more aggressive than anything Nari had seen her wear before. "Nemo? Oh, uh...yeah, actually. I needed to do some material restocking, figured this was the best way to do...what're you doing looking for Nemo? Have you finally given in and decided to join the fight for freedom?"

Her comments were meant as a jest - Onóra had originally denied taking up arms for the reasoning of fear, and Nari couldn't help but be worried that she'd done so anyways. Nari had accompanied the girl on one simple run, and had sworn never to let her hold a sword again. To see her now, comfortable in armour and arms...A lot has changed...for both of us.

The hum that escaped Onóra's lips wasn't quite what Nari had expected, and almost indecisive sound. As if she wasn't sure how to respond, or if she should at all. Instead of making Nari question her position, it instead instilled a desire to know. She waited a few seconds, to see if Onóra would add anything further - either a confirmation or a denial of the possibility, before leaping onto the conversation topic in earnest.

"Don't tell me you've been taking combat lessons from someone else! I mean, how do you know they're any good! Wouldn't it be better to take them from someone you know. I mean, you do know a frontliner after all!" The hurt was feigned, clearly so by the smile that stayed on her lips even as she raised a hand to her face in exaggeration - a display that she had done many times before, which had brought about a laugh in response. This time, however, she was met with silence. There was no laughter, no giggling, not even a smile in response to her actions and behaviour. It caused Nari to tense up, to drop her attempts at humour - her entire behaviour turning serious in a matter of seconds. "Who?"

The question was simple; a single word whispered and barely audible. The reaction was far beyond anything that Nari had expected - the tears that flowed from the girl's eyes as she seemed to recoil from Nari as if she'd slapped her. For far longer than she cared to admit, Nari stood motionless as she tried to figure out what she had done wrong, what had happened. She'd known from the sombreness of Onóra, that it must have been someone getting hurt, or killed...but she hadn't expected this response.

"Onóra...I'm...I'm sorry..." The words felt empty, hollow of any remorse. She'd seen far too many die herself, her heart had been steeled against the feelings - leaving her unsure of how to react in these situations. It had made it easier for Nari to survive, but comforting others didn't come anywhere as easily anymore. Her hand hovered in the air, unsure about reaching out to comfort the girl she'd once been so close to, not so long ago.

Time passed slowly for a few seconds as Nari wondered what she should do. She wanted to console her friend, to take away her pain. To make things right. She'd been in this position before; the hurt and suffering that came with the loss of another - especially one close. But she wasn't sure how to help, she wasn't sure what boundaries there were between her and Onóra now. What she could, and could not do.

"I'm...I'll be okay..." Nari doubted the words, but didn't argue. She knew better - it would take time to heal the pain, to make it entirely go away. But she also didn't want to doubt the fact that the other would be okay. That they were lost, hurt forever. More importantly, it wasn't her place to doubt her friend. Instead, she tried to turn the topic away, to focus on the present.

"Did...you want to try and find Nemo together?" She figured it was worth a try; although she wasn't sure if Onóra would want her around or not, it was better to work together than one of them being left out. Especially if they had the same goal, in the end.

Nari stood awkwardly for a few breaths as Onóra collected herself, waiting to hear the other's answer. She wasn't sure if she would be welcomed - Nemo's paradise did have limitations on how much could be found, and some individuals had become greedy and less welcoming when it came to the natural paradise. Still, she hoped that there was still enough of a friendship between herself and the blonde to warrant the question without being immediately denied.

"Yeah, together. I'd...love the company." The way that it was worded made Nari pause. There was a hollowness to it - not something that was unwelcoming, but almost as if it hadn't been said in a long, long time. Her eyes hovered over Onóra for a few seconds as she tried to figure out what felt so off about the other; it wasn't just the armour or sword on her hip. Her entire nature seemed different from what Nari had known in the past, almost as if the girl had gone through something...life changing. As if being in Aincrad isn't life changing enough. The invasion thought didn't comfort her though, the feeling not shaking itself from her heart.

Putting it aside, realising that she wouldn't find an answer to it anytime soon, Nari instead turned to the reason they had both come here. Unlike she had hoped, it seemed like they'd have to head out in search of the gatekeeper of the garden. Can't always have it so easy, I guess...sometimes you need to get the hard stuff done and out of the way. Although, hard isn't really what I'd call this. Turning to Onóra, Nari waved a hand towards the small village in the swamp, as if motioning them forwards. "Doesn't seem like we'll find Nemo here...perhaps a small search around the area? The information I received about him was...well, sketchy at best. Not sure if yours was more reliable, or...err, well, more?"

It had taken a full hour of scouring the area before they'd found Nemo. The man had been situated outside of the village - if you could even call it that - itself, apparently drawn into the local fauna with an interest that bordered onto questionable. Another five minutes of talking, and he'd led the two towards the gateway of his garden. Nari was still curious as to why they hadn't just made a single entryway into the whole garden that didn't require chasing down a man who was never to be found in the same place. While it did make it more luxurious in a way, it also closed off access to only those who could find the man - and left many without vital resources in a world where resources were key.

"What's going on in that mind of yours?" Onóra's words shook Nari from her thoughts, pulling her back to their present path as they followed along towards the garden itself. She considered sharing her thoughts with Onóra, bringing up the topic of those left without. She paused in doing so, however. The topic was heavy - and she wasn't sure on her old friend's stance on such a thing anymore. There was so much time that had passed, so much that had changed, that Nari wasn't even sure if she wanted to discuss it. It's like starting all over again...meeting someone for the first time, after you've come to know them...

"It's nothing. Was just thinking about how long the walk is, to the garden." She said aloud, her words not lies, but far from the truth itself. She wasn't sure if Onóra would pick up on the deviance, the fact that there was more. Either way, it seemed to be enough for the blonde, who nodded in return. Her eyes remained on Nari's face, but she didn't push any further for information. Either a sign that she was as uncomfortable in the moment as Nari was, or that she truly believed her. Either way, it left an awkwardness on the air for a few seconds, before Nari tried to drive the conversation again. "Tell me you've still got a tailor shop up and running? I've been looking for a half-decent tailor for the purposes of retro-fitting. I've kinda gotten away from the entire tank build a bit..."

She gave a wave over herself, indicating the new leathers she was wearing, a stark contrast from the heavy plate that she had once worn into battle. It had been an extreme change, but not one that Nari was entirely disappointed over. She'd enjoyed her tank role while it lasted, but that time had come to an end. Days long past and behind, now I move towards a far more destructive path...but not my own destruction.

As always, the garden was a sight of spectacular beauty - the open grassfields meeting with treed areas, a stone pathway leading throughout and around. Nari took a moment to glance over it, trying to absorb the peacefulness that always seemed to exist in this area. The smile that touched her face quickly faded as she realised Onóra had already begun walking down the pathway, a set stance in her shoulders showing the determination in her mind. The woman hadn't even taken a moment to admire the area - something that she would constantly do any time they had come previously. You seem surprised that someone has changed. Look at yourself...you're far from the person you once were, and not always for the better.

Her steps quickly followed after Onóra, a two-fold determination behind them. She wanted to figure out what drove the woman, why she was so intent on fighting now. But more importantly, she wanted to connect with her old friend once more, to clear the air between them and go back to how things had once been - although, she knew that it would never be quite the same. There was too much time passed, for that. Now, it would be about finding that new connection, that new balance between them. If that's even possible. Only one way to find out though.

Her thoughts had taken away her focus for a moment, which had been long enough for Onóra to rush forwards and begin fighting with a collection of moss wolves. The creatures themselves were fairly harmless, last time Nari had been here, they had been little challenge. Still, everything in this world could be dangerous, and as she paused to consider her options, Nari found herself surrounded by the remainder of the pack. "Guess I'll be handling my own collection of you...alright, fine. I could use the exercise."

Her scythe flashed into movement, spinning in circles that Nari didn't even try to keep her eye on. Instead, she focused on the two wolves to her left, keeping an eye on how they reacted to her. Either cautious, or waiting for an opening, the four had come to a standstill, pacing around her in a half moon circle that was likely meant to give them the advantage - if she hadn't been wielding an overly large polearm of a weapon. Smiling to herself, she launched forward, ready to connect with the wolves and start the fight in earnest.

It was almost as easy as she remembered, all four wolves rushing forwards in response to her own movement, the scythe flashing in a wide sweep in response. The blade managed to catch all four, sending them flying backwards to lay on the ground as the stun effect took control. Nari used the moment to glance over towards Onóra, noticing that the woman was holding her own against the pair that she'd engaged with. Her sword kept one at bay, while the other recovered from a kick she'd landed on its flank.

She turned her attention back towards her own fight, content that her friend was alright for the moment. The sooner she ended her pack of wolves, the sooner she could saunter over and make sure that there was nothing to be concerned over. And maybe send over a party invite, so that you can keep an eye on her without needing to invade her space. Would be the smart thing to do. Nari growled in response to the thought, not that it was a bad thought at all, but at the fact that she hadn't considered it beforehand.

Before she could consider anything further, though, she spotted movement out of the corner of her eyes. Her attention drawn back to the pack around her as the wolves started to pull themselves to their feet. Nari shifted her weight, deciding on taking a defensive approach and waiting for the creatures to come to her. She had the advantage in this situation, a single well placed strike could end the conflict and she could head off towards her friend to see what they planned on doing - whether it be continuing to cut down the many creatures that roamed around here, or a combination of things. Questions she should have asked before they arrived, now that she thought about it.

Her own conflict ended, Nari turned her attention to Onóra's, just in time to see her strike down the first wolf. Content to sit back and watch, Nari leaned against her scythe, waiting for the woman to end the other creature. A few moments passed as the blonde and the wolf passed back and forth attempts to break through their opponent's defences, before Onóra scored a final hit on the wolf, causing the creature to go up in a shower of shards. Onóra took a moment to catch her breath, before turning to glare at Nari, her face frowning in what Nari thought was an expression of anger. "You know, staring at someone while they're trying to focus really puts a pressure on them not to screw up. Definitely doesn't help the on-going fight at all."

A single passing of breath, and then the two of them had burst out in laughter at the remark. It was something that Nari had used to say to her friend all the time, back when she would get frustrated at being watched. The words had never carried any amount of anger behind them, and yet she had used a phrase that she assumed would be scornful - yet each and every time, Onóra would simply laugh at her, and give a single response. "Well, maybe you should work on getting better then."

Nari sighed at the memory as her own words drifted away, a smile touching her face now that bespoke an understanding. Perhaps things weren't exactly as they had been - but the connection between them still lingered, like the embers of a flame just waiting to be rekindled. "Alright, so what's the plan for today? Just hunt down everything we can possibly find? I've never had a ton of luck with gathering in this garden, so I'm more than happy to fight anything and everything we can find here...although somehow I think that'll upset Nemo."

Onóra shrugged, brandishing her sword in a single looping overhand swing, before bringing it to rest. "I've already dealt with Nemo before, so I'm not too worried. But yeah, the idea was...to hunt down everything I could find. I hadn't expected to be sharing those finds, though. Maybe I'll charge you a finders fee or something."

Nari grinned slightly in response, before nodding towards another pack of wolves a small distance away. "Any complaints?"

The responding no was enough, and Nari moved towards the wolves, her scythe already set into the ready stance behind her back. She figured Onóra would find her own quarry, especially against creatures such as these. It was almost easy pickings in this area of the game, the real challenge laying in getting here. Although that was the rumoured purpose behind this place...

Two went down almost immediately as Nari's sweeping strike obliterated them. Her scythe's wide slash, paired with the effects of its sharpened blade, meant that the two didn't stand a chance against her onslaught. It was almost enough to make her feel bad for the creatures. Almost, but not quite. Even as she approached the two remaining, their bodies locked as the stun effect kept them from moving, Nari couldn't help but see them as little more than an objective - a means towards her eventual escape from this place. A means of returning to the real world, of ensuring that everyone made it out of the trap that was Aincrad.

Besides, they just respawn over time. Something that we can't do. It was a viewpoint she was finding to be more and more common in her mind, and one that she was disliking. She had no problem ending the lives of the NPCs and creatures that were dangerous - to herself, her friends, or even towards other NPCs. But there was something about the bloodbath against creatures that were questionably innocent, like these wolves. Necessary, maybe, but she hoped to never find enjoyment in such an activity. Need to remain myself, for as long as possible...otherwise what's the point? What good is there in becoming nothing beyond a murdering...machine. Like those player-killers. I'm better than that, and need to keep it that way.

Still, she needed to end the suffering of these two if she was going to be able to get anywhere. Putting aside any dark feelings, Nari brought her scythe upwards in preparation. She didn't hold the motion, not wanting to extend their final moments more than necessary. She wanted to be a reaper, an omen of death and finality - which meant that she would not torture, would not harm those who didn't require harm. Her purpose, in this game, was simply to lead those to finality that needed an ending - nothing more. A code to live by...and one to keep in mind, for moments like this.

The wolves had fallen beneath her blade again, her last strike almost missing if she hadn't been so focused on the sudden shift in the wolf's pounce. Thankfully, she'd managed to adjust her blade's twirl midway through its movement, causing the very tip to catch the flank, and in turn the wolf to explode into a shower of shards that glittered against the sky's light. Nari still couldn't consider the light sun, the entirely artificial aspect to it seemingly different to her somehow - sure, it was meant to be sunlight, but it wasn't real. For all your talk...you still miss the real world, immensely. It doesn't matter how real this world is, it'll never be perfect for you - will it?

"You know, it was weird to see you with a scythe at first, but...it fits." Onóra's voice came from beside her shoulder, and Nari turned to find the blonde watching the area beyond, sword held slightly to the side as she waited for a response. Nari closed her eyes, taking a moment to recover herself as she realised she'd burned through her energy faster than she had wanted. There was still a fair amount of fighting to be done, and Nari didn't want to drain herself too quickly if she didn't need to do so.

"Mmm...yeah, a bit of a change. Although it's...comfortable. Plus, it fits the whole new image I'm going for...so, yeah. Scythe." She spoke with her eyes still closed, taking a moment to enjoy the peace. Although she enjoyed the flow of combat, the dance of blades and teeth and claws, there was something to be said about the calmness that came afterwards. The peace and reassurance in knowing that you had survived another battle, another day. "Are you looking to head to the forefront? It's been awfully quiet on the frontlines as of late...so I don't doubt your blade would be appreciated..."

"Maybe. I'm still a long ways away from that...but maybe one day. Like you." The words were stated so simply that Nari almost missed their meaning, her eyes turning to stare at Onóra a few seconds after they'd been said, an almost shocked look on her face. She still didn't consider herself a frontliner, and it had never occurred to her that others might.

In order to turn her attention away from the sudden embarrassment, Nari looked for something further she could take down. There was always an abundance of wolves, and as her eyes scanned the lines of the trees around them, she spotted what she was searching for - a set of eight yellow globes that seemed to be watching her. Grinning, she nodded towards the small pack, drawing Onóra's attention towards them. "Care to help me, oh mighty huntress? They look like they're ready for us to cut them down, assuming you're not afraid. Which, I mean, I could totally understand if you are...those big maws, the teeth, and claws and yellow eyes and-"

Her words were cut short as Onóra gave her a rough shove, before running off towards the pack. Nari was only a few steps behind her, the scythe twirling behind her in anticipation. She'd already had quite a haul - larger than most others she'd received upon her ventures into the garden, but they'd only just begun - which meant that there was still more to find. Still more to obtain, and in turn - in turn, more to take home in preparation. More to put towards the effort of clearing away this world, of making it home. This place certainly does give hope. She just wished that the hope didn't get dashed away the moment they were back beyond the gate of the garden itself.

Onóra's blade clashed with the wolves, driving them backwards as she sliced across the air where they had once stood. Nari was mere seconds behind as her scythe lashed out in a wide arc, aiming to clear away the small square of fur that the group had collected into - driven into it, actually, by Onóra's feint. A trick that was common among those who often worked as groups - something that Nari knew she'd have to ask about at a later time.

Two managed to pull back away from her wide arc, avoiding the blade of the scythe and retreating some distance before Onóra was on them, driving her blade in careful and controlled strikes at their flanks, driving them back towards Nari. She could tell from the woman's movements, the close sweeps and balanced flicks, that she was doing nothing more than herding them - driving them towards the real threat, which was Nari herself. Grinning, mostly to herself at the realisation, Nari stepped forward, prepared to intercept the remaining wolves and show them the mistake of falling for such a trick.

Seems she's far more versed in this combative thing than I had originally realised. Which...is good to see. In this world. She would certainly have a lot of questions for Onóra when they decided to take some time to talk. For now, though, her focus was on clearing away the threats before them - and preferably getting that done before anything else decided to join the fray and fun.

Her scythe moving into motion again, Nari aimed for the centre of the three remaining wolves, hoping to catch them before they could realise the trap they had been driven towards. She doubted that they'd be smart enough to counter it, let alone escape it - but it wasn't a chance she was willing to waste time on. Better to put them down, and be done with it before the system decided it'd had enough of their little game. Cardinal was the one thing that Nari had never found trust in, although her reasons often differed from those around her.

Shards. It was the final moment of the two wolves as they burst away beneath Nari's strike, leaving nothing standing where they had once been. The lone survivor, either knowing its fate, or reacting as one would expect it to, suddenly threw back its head and howled. The sound was chilling, reaching down to Nari's core as it seemed to revibrate through the open air. She wasn't entirely sure what it meant, but she knew one thing for sure - she didn't want it to stick around to find out its success or failure.

A quick glance towards Onóra just to make sure she was okay - the blonde had taken up a stance a few steps away, providing Nari with the open area she needed for her much wider attacks, the sword held in a two-handed ready grip - before Nari's feet were carrying her forwards towards the last wolf. Something about it had changed, and Nari watched as it waited for her approach - the stun effect holding it still, but the expression upon its face almost welcoming. As if Nari was ending something that desired no continuation. Reading into something that isn't there...put it aside. It won't help you now. Choosing to ignore it, Nari continued forwards, bringing her scythe back and up for a simple sweeping strike that should put the creature down for good - or at least, she hoped.

Her feet hit the ground a few steps away, and Nari took the momentum, twisting her body backwards, then forwards in a slash that was meant to aim for the centre of the wolf's flank. The thing was still, its body frozen in place - either from the stun, or simply knowing it couldn't escape. Time seemed to slow for Nari, as the scythe's blade inched forwards towards the target, the point shimmering slightly as the purple aura enveloped it, the sign that her sword art was activating even midway through the stroke itself.

The final wolf having been defeated, Nari let herself lower to the ground, laying back slightly against a nearby stump and grinning towards Onóra. The woman looked ready to rush off and engage whatever else was in the vicinity - held in place only by Nari's sudden decision to settle into the ground. Nari's gaze shifted upwards towards her companion, waving her left hand towards the ground beside her. "You can come sit, if you want. I promise not to bite, at first."

Onóra's reaction was about what Nari had expected - a quick sign of appreciation, followed by her drifting down into the grass. Nari had figured her own energy was waning, if she'd been using half the effort Nari had. While they were capable of some extreme limits in the game that they may not have been able to reach in the real world, there were still limits. Limits which, if ignored, could lead to deadly lessons - and most of them were a final lesson. It was something that most learnt in their early days, or not at all.

"Ever think of the real world anymore?" The question was more intrusive than Nari had meant it to be - a mere conversation started that had gone further than most people dared bring up. As she waited for a response, she felt her breathing come to a stop - held, in anticipation. She'd spoken to Onóra about the real world only a handful of times before - learning a little about the other woman, and sharing a little about herself. Not enough that those around her would be concerned, Nari assumed, but still...more than a lot were comfortable with sharing themselves.

"Sometimes...yeah. In the darker nights. You know?" Nari nodded, she understood far more than she enjoyed. Those dark, lonely nights, when you were alone with nothing more than your thoughts. Thoughts that led to darker places, where you wished that you were out facing whatever horrors could be found within the floors of Aincrad. Those nights, Nari had often found herself drawn out towards the fields, preferring the danger of fighting at night over dealing with her own mind. "It's never the happy memories, is it? Or maybe it's just been tainted by this place..."

"I think...it's actually the happy memories that hurt the most...the ones that remind you of everything you've left behind, being stuck in here. Those ones...are the worst." She almost said more, almost gave away more of her feelings than she had wanted to. A lot had happened, and Nari was feeling the pressure of those dark thoughts. Now wasn't the time to dwell on them, though, and in order to push away the depression that came with them, Nari forced her attention to the stump, searching for anything of value that might be hidden within. "Remember the days when we used to just...sit here, and collect things in order to get our gathering better? Doing nothing but chatting, as if there were no cares in the world..."

"Back when things were simpler...yeah, I remember. We used to talk about such non-sense...like how we were going to meet up once we got out of here, and hold a party for the victors and survivors." Although the words themselves seemed almost unamused, Onóra's voice held a tone of excitement at the thought. Nari's eyes shifted over, glancing at the blonde to find a sad expression on her face. The same expression she'd seen on those faces meant to represent loss; loss of something that they cared deeply for. "I don't know if we're ever going to have that party...but we'll definitely be a few people short, don't you think?"

Nari collected the few goods she'd found in the stump, before rolling to her side. She didn't want to avoid the conversation by any means, but she wasn't entirely sure what she could input into it. Agreement? Hollow and empty promises of good times ahead? The options were limited, and of those limitations, she hated the most favourable beyond any other. Buying herself time to think wasn't helping either, and she found her words stumbling out before she'd had time to really consider them. "A few short...but never forgotten. We'll get out of here, in order to not make their loss in vain. They did so much...for us. The very least we can do is to not die."

It was by no means an inspiring speech, or overall enthralling. In fact, as far as Nari was concerned, it had fallen short on the impact she'd been meaning to make. Promises that they likely couldn't keep, desires well beyond their reach or expectations. And yet, it was their entire purpose for pushing on - to free themselves, and take back revenge for those who had been lost. There was nothing more to this life, in some ways. Fight, until you could not fight any more. Then become a symbol for that fight, so that others might find the drive to continue onwards. A depressing way to look at it, when you stop and think about it in earnest...

"Yeah...yeah, it's the only thing worth doing, really. And I mean...giving up wouldn't honour their memory in any way. It would simply be...forgetting. Betrayal of everything they ever did, everything they stood for. Fighting on, getting free...it's the only thing that matters now. The only thing we can do, in order to make it worth their while. To make it worth their...sacrifice." Spoken as if she'd been reading Nari's mind. Nari paused to glance up at Onóra, her eyes squinting ever so slightly as she tried to consider the impact of the other woman's thoughts. She wasn't sure what to make of the sudden change, the entire shift in her behaviour. One moment, Nari had wondered if she'd need to console her friend, the next, Onóra appeared to have regained herself. She's stronger...far stronger than she was when you first met her. Don't ever forget that.

Rolling to her feet, Nari held out a hand towards Onóra, the soft grin on her face meant to appease any outlying emotions. The blonde glanced up at Nari for a brief second, before reaching out a hand and letting herself be pulled upwards. "The first thing we need to do, then, is to get stronger. To keep practicing, keep gaining levels and gear and strength. Sitting around in the grass isn't going to help with that - not alone. So, how about we get back to some hunting and grinding...I see another pack of wolves just around the corner that are daring us to come get them."

Onóra returned the grin, before nodding her agreement of the plan. Like Nari, the blonde seemed to enjoy the concept of being in motion, of doing something, rather than just sitting around. Although there was a time for relaxation, now didn't seem to be it for either one of them. For now, they both needed to be in action, in motion. Hunting, like the wolves that were their targets. Nari grinned wider to herself at the thought, looking down to make sure Yuki was at her heels. The small fox had been with her through so much, and Nari realised - not for the first time - that Yuki would be the one thing she missed from this world. Friends in many places...and not all of them may be as you believe them to be.

The line stuck in her head as she came around the edge of the trees and burst into the centre of the wolf pack, her scythe swinging around and outwards in a wide arc, hoping to catch the group of them in surprise. Behind her, she could hear Onóra launching herself towards the small group off to the right, her battle cry ringing through the air in defiance. Nari kept her focus on her own targets, resisting the urge to turn and look at her friend in action. For now, she needed to secure this area, before moving on to the next. There were a lot more wolf packs to deal with - which meant a lot more loot to be found in the area. And the sun remains high in the sky, perfectly luminating the targets ripe for the kill...

The first two had gone down easier than Nari had expected, the combination of her surprise strike, and the bleed effect turning the wolves into shattered shards almost instantly. She felt bad, slightly, at the fact that they didn't get more of a fighting chance - until she remembered she was the fight that put them down. As she straightened from her original strike, she glanced over towards Onóra, seeing the woman's sword slammed straight through the side of a wolf, pausing for a single second before the beast exploded into shards. The second creature she'd been fighting tried to take the opportunity, launching towards her only to be slammed back by the pommel of the weapon in its face.

Nari smiled, happy to see her friend so competent in the artform. She'd been worried at first, seeing the armour and sword on the blonde. She hated to admit it, but her cynical side had wondered if Onóra even knew how to wield the weapon, or if there was a simple desire to look like she was a fighter. But as Nari had watched her throughout the last hour, she'd come to realise that it wasn't just ornaments - Onóra could hold her against even some of the frontliners that Nari had met.

Turning her attention back towards the two remaining wolves, Nari let her scythe sweep outwards and in a round arc, bringing the blade towards its momentum just through the arc itself. She'd learnt to trust the weight of it in her hand, barely requiring any force or strength in order to bring it about. She accredited the action to the power of physics, a near perfect mimicry of the real world within the video game. Tangible connections that Cardinal was more more than capable of bringing to life.

The first group had gone down easily, and Nari turned with a calm and steady stance to take in Onóra's own fight. Last she had seen, the blonde woman had been cleaving through her own opponents with ease, tearing them down as if they were nothing more than simple boars on the first floor. The sight that met her eyes, however, was entirely different. Nari paused in horror as she saw Onóra on the ground, blade between herself and the jaw of the wolf on top of her, while five others surrounded her, watching for an opening that wasn't yet available. Nari knew all too well that the opening would present itself shortly - something she wasn't going to wait around to have occur.

Six steps and her scythe was slashing out at the wolves, drawing their attention away from Onóra and towards herself as she slammed one creature hard enough to send it flying backwards. Her grow was met with the four others she faced, the things glaring at her as if angered by her interruption. "You dance with the Reaper, now. Beware, lest you find yourself in guidance to a world far beyond this one - back to the remnants of the Cardinal system itself."

Her words were whispered, barely audible beneath her breath as she let her scythe swing about, keeping the wolves away from Onóra, and aiming for the vulnerable flanks of the creatures in the hopes of shattering them into the small shards that was their true, final form. She didn't dare risk looking to her friend again - not in the moment. She needed her attention upon these four, hoping that the blonde would be able to hold off the other two long enough for Nari to deal with these.

The first one shattered, and as the others froze in place, Nari took her opportunity to risk a glance over at Onóra. The woman had managed to shove the wolf off her, and was back on her feet. The sword held a bit unsteadily, but at the ready. It was all Nari could ask for, in the moment. Her glance had taken away any advantage she'd had just seconds ago, as the wolves shook off the stun effect and began moving towards her again.

Nari kicked the bottom haft of the scythe, forcing the weapon into motion quickly. The blade spun around, swiping towards the approaching wolves and forcing them to leap aside to avoid it - giving Nari space and reaction time. She stepped backwards, bringing the scythe up and around her body, keeping the wolves at a distance as she watched their movements. Even as her eyes trained on the creatures, her hands were moving, forcing the weapon through complex sequences that Nari had been practicing for some time now. Everything came natural to her, even the footsteps required for the attack sequences, the way that she shifted her weight.

Just as suddenly, another of the wolves was leaping towards her, trying to get past the spinning blade that was her whirlwind of defence. A shift, and the scythe was coming downwards, the blade aiming for the creature's back in the hopes of pinning it against the ground. Nari's body had already begun to move to her left, in the hopes of avoiding the teeth and claws of the wolf.

Nari turned away from the now deceased wolf, making sure that Onóra was holding her own against her opponents. Her eyes watched as the longsword's blade met the claws of an upwards strike, pushing it off to the left before swinging back around to slash across the wolf's throat. The second creature made a leap for Onóra's flank, before being driven back by the blade's natural continuation, keeping the blonde well protected.

"Guess there's not much to worry about, for the moment..." Nari settled into the grasses, determined to relax a bit before needing to leap into action again. She let her hands roam naturally, while keeping her eyes trained on Onóra, watching the woman's form and making notes of suggestions she could make to improve her fighting capability.

It didn't take long for Onóra to finish off the wolves, her blade moving in a careful sequence of thrusts and swipes, simplicity at its finest that created a careful threat of defence and offence. Nari found that, although the form was far from perfect, it suited the fighter immensely - so much so that her commentary was likely to be limited. As she waited for Onóra to come settle beside her, she glanced down around the fields, taking in the sights and wishing that the entire world of Aincrad was this peaceful.
