<<Rencesvals' Battle Theme>>

Background:

Sakata Masumi was a typical rich college kid attending a posh fraternity that would secure future connections.  It would enable him to live a blissful life of leisure and endless academic indulgence. His path was set to cruise through life in the lap of luxury on the lazy river lined with endless teats awaiting sweet and careless suckling.  Paradise was never meant to last.

Part of a dozen college friends who'd used their parents’ influence to secure copies of a highly coveted new virtual game, Sword Art Online, they looked forward to touting their conquests and comparing achievements in what was supposed to be yet another wondrous waste of time.  All were big history buffs who agreed to join SAO under the guise of some legendary figure or notable ancient battlefield.  Sakata chose the site of Charlemagne’s defeat from the Song of Roland, where betrayal led to a massacre against a backdrop in virtuous, knightly sacrifice.

When Kayaba declared the death game, Sakata’s own portents revealed their collective fates.  Barely out of the gates of the Town of Beginnings, two of his peers betrayed the rest to a nascent guild of player-killers looking for quick and easy gains.  Most of his fiends were instantly slaughtered.  Those few who survived blamed each other, gradually drifting apart as they fell to ennui.  The mental strains of the Kayaba’s trap broke them apart, and then broke them again from within.  Ill prepared were their idealist and romantic sensibilities for the harsh brutally of their new reality.

Rencesvals, or Ren to those whom he still dares extend his curse of friendship, is wracked with guilt over those early, needless deaths.  He blames the dangers of naivety blended with nostalgia for blinding him against obvious dangers, cast against the dark of desperation ravaging human souls.  A self-proclaimed student of history, he should have known better.  Now, alone in a world gone mad, does he choose to cling to fanciful ideals or teeter over the brink himself?

Virtues

Honorable - A romantic at heart, Rencesvals clings to the antiquated notions of respectful action.  Drawing from the study of Bushido and the knightly codes of medieval Europe, Ren sets a high bar for himself.  Unfortunately, it is as much a crutch as it is his salvation.  Holding together a battered psyche by clinging to such high ideals can also take its toll whenever he fails to meet his own standards.
Courageous - Rencesvals' very name beckons the voice of tragic sacrifice.  In witnessing the fall of this friends, he also found the steel in his own backbone.  Had he not, none of them would have survived at all.  When danger nears, he knows he will not falter.
Wise - Innocence is often lost at heavy cost, but can also be the very best of teachers.  Pain and humility have given Ren new perspective.  He has learned from his mistakes and will continue to do so, passing those lessons on to others whenever he can and assuming they are willing to hear them.

Flaws

Harsh - Counterpart to his noble ambitions, Ren's same code of honor can lead him to rash and false conclusions.  Here, the taint of his own past experiences tends to prejudice his responses where mercy and temperament might better serve.  Those who prey upon the weak have made their choice.  It is the mark left upon him by Aincrad.  Whether the wound festers enough to tarnish is own soul remains to be seen.
Guilty - So many years of his life were wasted to indulgence and excess.  Ren regularly scourges his own peace of mind over his past deliberate obliviousness.  It can lead him to good things, on occasion, when he isn't wallowing over his failures.  Guilt at failure is also an inevitable companion to anyone who sets the bar so high that they can never truly reach it.
Cynical - Too many lies make trust difficult, and Ren has had his fill.  Respecting a foe doesn't mean turning your back on him.  Trust has become a rare commodity in his heart, even if he cannot fully admit it to himself.
