Background

Valerie is the older of two sisters, the younger being six years behind. Valerie was always praised as a gifted student, working nonstop to achieve the highest grades possible with the expectation that she would become valedictorian and pursue a high ranking college after graduation. Her parents were constantly pushing for her to achieve greatness, but the pressure of everything left her feeling crushed inside. It was all too much, it always had been. She never had time to go out and have fun or hang out with her friends, even the few that she had made after all this time. The friends she made were always hard to keep since the only time they could speak was in-between class periods and at lunch. Even at home, she hardly had time to spend with her sister or parents. She would come home, do homework, eat, study, shower, sleep. Every day, for years.

Eventually, these endless expectations would lead to the self-destruction of Valerie. Sure enough, to her parents chagrin, the golden child would succeed in her parents' eyes and become valedictorian. She had scholarships lined up, ready to onboard her with a full ride. It was everything her parents could have ever wished for. It was their dream, not hers, but she saw the opportunity she had longed for. She would graciously accept the scholarship to a university a few states out, making a big show about how she was "happy to make her parents proud" and that she couldn't have done this without them. She wanted to make them feel as if this was their victory, their legacy. She would move out a few months later to begin the freshman year at her new university, waving goodbye to her family one final time.

Stepping on campus, she felt like a tremendous weight had been taken off of her. Her parents were no longer here to force her to waste her life away on education and ideas of grandeur. This was her era. She was going to take back those years that were lost and enjoy every last second of it. Valerie would skip her classes, using the time to explore the campus activities and nearby cities. She would come to learn about virtual reality gaming and dump excessive hours, in her mind, to the superior reality - one away from schooling, one away from her parents. Finally feeling free, she would eventually stumble into a community of MMORPG players that absorbed her as one of their own, one that felt like a true family.

Eventually the university would dismiss Valerie for the lack of attendance, but she didn't mind. She had gotten a part time job as a server at a local family restaurant and lived out of her car. Her graduation gift was the one thing she did appreciate from her parents, it was a large SUV with collapsible seats that allowed her to live out the back. She didn't need a place to live since she spent most of her free time in arcades renting out VR equipment to play online with her guild. She felt it gave her the freedom she wanted, allowing her to relocate anytime, anywhere. She would occasionally make trips around the surrounding states to visit some of her guild members and celebrate their friendship, it was a fresh feeling. One she relished in.

After a few years of living her mobile life, she was shocked to hear word from her sister. She expected Vanessa and their parents to develop a hatred for her, but it turns out that her younger sister had went through the same harassment from their parents and they were able to reform their connection. Turns out that Vanessa had went off to college, but was actually going through with it. Valerie felt conflicted, hoping that it was out of Vanessa's will and not put onto her by her parents, but congratulated her anyways. They would start to have calls every week or two with each other to check in, see how life was going, fill each other in on any tea. One day, Valerie would inform Vanessa about a new game her and her guild were going to be joining in - Sword Art Online. Then not too soon after, her sister's phone calls would stop coming through as Valerie became trapped in the world of Aincrad.

Personality

Virtues Flaws

Headstrong | Valerie has been through thick and thin, pushed herself to the limit and still pushed on. She isn't the type to give up and will ensure that she gets what she needs to done when it needs to be done. This doesn't necessarily mean that she'll be happy doing it, but one can always rely on Valk on any requests she accepts.

Leader | Valerie has led many teams through successful events and she's brilliant at coordinating team efforts. Knowing how to delegate tasks and keep teams organized is a specialty of hers, even in ventures that she hasn't experienced. When she's put in charge, her only priority is to make sure the task is completed successfully.

Loyal | Loyalty can never be bought from Valerie and it is rare for her to give it away. It is a treasure that she only holds for those that treat her with respect and dignity. If you ever are able to strike a chord with Valerie and form a bond, you'll forever have an ally that will walk through thick and thin with you. She is more than willing to cross lines for those that have done the same for her.

Reluctant | Having been forced into doing so many things that she hasn't wanted to her whole life, she's often hesitant to sign up for requests. While she will do what needs to be done, she hates being told what to do, especially when she's in the middle of doing it. She's more than ready to snap at anyone that points a finger.

Impatient | Her temper with others can often be a point of inflammation. She often expects others to have the same level of determination to get things done and the experience to do so. She knows such a judgmental state is a negative side to her, but it's like an ache in her back when she has to handle someone incompetent.

Straightforward | Valerie has a tendency to forget to use a filter when talking with people. She has the ability to speak with respect when the situation calls for it, but more often than not, she defaults to a dry, callous tone when speaking with people. She does a somewhat decent job at drawing back this tone regularly when speaking to her friends or family.
