[PP-F4] The Battle of Snowfrost

Pinball eyed the last two soldiers, and then glanced between Morningstar and Acanthus. He briefly considered ignoring the kill, and letting one of them finish the job -- what with the competition, and all -- but he got the feeling that that'd somehow come off the wrong way. Pinball instead flipped a pair of daggers into his palms, unceremoniously dispatching only one of the remaining soldiers with two lazy flicks of his wrists. "Whoops. Missed." Totally not on purpose, either. He stared at the two of them, wondering which would jump at it first. Morningstar was at 10. Did that mean Acanthus needed to catch up? 

 Pinball didn't comment on the conversation of his companions, but he definitely took note of it. Did Oscar actually make memory-erasing whiskey? He'd have to check in on that at some point. Pinball's pale gaze again flitted between the two players. If he had something on his mind, however, he didn't say it. Instead, he took comfort in the warmth of his cloak, enjoying a brief respite before the next wave of goons came crashing down around.

Morningstar wasn't really sure what was going on anymore. Since the last time I posted, he had lost himself in the crowd of untrained villagers and unshowered snow soldiers, and his party members were now out of sight. He had lost track of his score as well. Where was he now? Twelve? Thirteen? Sixty seemed like a good round number. He'd go with sixty.

"Hello?" he'd call out once in a while, to see if any of his party members could hear him. Often, it resulted in NPCs looking at him strangely; and often, the distraction led to their deaths. Oops.

A wave of soldiers spawned to his left, and he planned to intercept them if he could. He charged in their direction, jamming his blade through the abdomen of the closest foot soldier. As it broke apart, he moved on to the next target.

Three had escaped him, however. He was too slow, growing more and more tired by the second. The temperature didn't help either. His fingers were frosty and his toes wet and numb. He slashed wide, stunning the captain and a soldier.

She’d read about people describing battles as long and tedious. Storytellers loved the dramatic moments, enthralled readers with florid descriptions of beleaguered underdogs rallying under a tattered banner. But the storytellers loved to skip past all the attrition that left the underdogs beleaguered.

By the fourth mass of enemies, it was clear the party was not the underdog. But beleaguered was an understatement. Acanthus had been hacking away for what felt like hours. Her muscles burned, and her patience was hanging by a thin, frayed thread.

“Hello?”

“Still here.” She swept in behind Morningstar, puncturing the captain while his guard was down and finishing off one of the wounded soldiers. In her pained exhaustion, one of her attacks went wide, so far from the mark that the enemy didn’t even have to parry. It was embarrassing, but Acanthus was too tired to be embarrassed.

Once they were done here, she was going to find a nice cafe on floor 4 and order the biggest hot chocolate they offered. She would take a gentle first sip, drain the rest of the cup to warm herself, and then she would scream violently into the empty container. But before that could happen, eighty-thousand more zombies needed killing.

If he could feel fatigue, he would be. The mental tax of cutting through wave after wave of enemies was not to be underestimated, though; only once in recent memory had he been so preoccupied in such a way. In truth, Pinball wasn't sure whether he preferred cutting through the zombies or the bears more. They were both pretty miserable ways to pass the time. The quest wasn't kidding -- they were actually defending Snowfrost from an army. After cutting through the fresh ranks of undead, he exhaled softly, a puff of frosty air escaping his cold lips. He heard Morningstar call out to them somewhere amongst the sounds of fighting, and Pinball had decided he wouldn't answer. He'd meet up with them after they were all said and done. He inhaled sharply as a soldier, hefting a spear, narrowly missed his cheek. 

Enough daydreaming -- Pinball was back to it, cutting through the enemy in a black whirlwind of knives.

Fights like this made him want to retire.

There was no glory, no reward. Numb fingers tightened around his sword. He clashed against a soldier's, deflecting an obvious attack. Star lunged, slipping on a hidden patch of ice. Metal shot past his head, sticking into the snow-buried dirt. He collected himself, drawing an upward slash through the soldier's leather armor.

Some soldiers made it past the trio. They picked and pulled at the wooden wall, ravaging all the players had set out to build. Flames ate away at the only real defense that Snowfrost had. Star blitzed back, eliminating them one by one, but the fires had grown tall and extinguishing them was beyond his capabilities.

Besides, a new squadron of soldiers had already joined the battle, and his attention was needed at the vanguard. Accepting the wall's damages for what they were--an unavoidable casualty--Morningstar regrouped with his party up ahead.

Another squad in the dirt. The snow? Where was she?

Crunch. A hammer crashed into her shoulder, a glancing blow that only knocked Acanthus off balance. She swung back, obliterating the grunt in a single blow.

“Hey! That was close.” An NPC guard chided her, and she shot back a murderous look. The guard grumbled, but moved deeper into the battlefield, away from her.

Another enemy approached, bearing down with a huge great axe. Acanthus shifted out of the way—a roll would have been better, but she was tired—and the axe clipped the edge of her armor. As she struck back, a warm fuzz clouded her mind. It must be some equivalent of a runner’s high. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts. She whirled past the large enemy, elbowing him to the ground before driving Meteor through his helmet.

She was going to sleep really well tonight. She was counting on it.
