[F29-PP] Mourning Glory <<Yzaslanik>>

Ilridge had been bad enough, but worse required facing if the Frontlines were ever to manage clearing this forsaken floor.  Freyd had finally felt certain enough that their fortified beachhead could hold, maintaining a garrison a dozen players strong at all times.  Each were armored as well as any of the vanguard, though rotating their ranks had proven wise.  Just staying on twenty-nine for too long took its toll on anyone's sanity.  Immediate needs tended to, he'd forayed away from the main camp to investigate, of all things, an abandoned church.  High on a nearby hill, faded signs spun and torn for added confusion, he'd gleaned only the district's name: Kineallen.  It might have been the name of the figure to whom the dilapidated structure was once dedicated, the name of the rolling earthen rise upon which it stood, or something completely different.  Like almost everything on this floor, there was simply no way to know.

Sword drawn, hovering pre-emptively at his side, Freyd had no illusions about the ambient threat.  Lightning crackled overhead, the constant booming thunder making distance-gauging utterly pointless.  It was just there, overhead, all the time. Suspicions and Whispery-senses were going crazy here, and everywhere else across the floor, making them effective worthless.  Full, constant alertness was unsustainable, even for him.  Tough it also seemed best to assume the worst was waiting around every turn, which did little for nerves still clandestinely frayed from the raid.

"So... condemned?  Cursed?  Available for redemption at discount prices?  What kind of church are you?  I'm guessing that actual sanctuary of any kind is probably off the table."

Looming like it was yawning at his approach, and about the devour anyone foolish enough to to do so, the building itself was was shuttered and dark.  Heavy wood doors bore clawed scars, and though there was no evidence of a breach, nor were there any indications of survivors.  Fresh graves were obvious, hastily made and nestled among far older stock, surrounding the holy house like decrepit crenelations of a defunct bastion.

"Yeah.  Fat lot of help you all likely were." A pang grabbed his heart at the possibility that NPCs might actually have fought here and died, denied their cursed blessing of rebirth.  Could this floor be a nightmare for them too, or had they never actually been here in the first place?

Wulfrin left the relative safety of the Tracker's Alliance's forward operating base on floor 29 and set out for the church within the area known as Kineallen. What he didn't expect was to find Freyd exploring the grounds as well. The Whisper was heavily armored as always, a build Wulfrin had sen inaction several time at this point. The most recent time was during the initial defense of the warp gate. Wulfrin was wearing armor in a similar style to the one Freyd had gifted him upon reaching tier four. At his hip a new weapon, obviously with a hint of celestial origin, rest where Icingdeath usually found its home.

"Odd seeing you here," Wulfrin spoke bringing attention to his presence. "What brings you out to the creepy church on the silent hill? Especially alone." The hypocrisy was palpable considering Wulfrin had also traveled out alone despite the constant hounding within the frontlines to travel in at the very least duos.

"Reports," Freyd replied. "More accurately, the complete absence of any."  A bearded grimace mixed with a smirk, offering a hint of levity in a world gone mad.  "By now players would normally have scoured half of a new floor's area, painting a fuller picture of what we had on offer to explore in greater detail.  So far, we've been lucky just to hold Ilridge.  That's not enough, if we're to press forward."  Eyes blinked their approval at Wulfrin's new duds while the rest of the Whisper made no mention that they'd both wandered into dangerous territory alone.

"Aincrad has no shortage of defiled churches, but they also tend to be great harbors for lore.  Speaking of which, any port in a st...." Thunder crashed overhead as the clouds broke their brooding with a sudden whirlwind of wet, angry gusts unable to pick a single direction.  Both men eyed the church as potential shelter, but the skies wouldn't have it.  Only the cemetery remained as an option, spouting a few derelict sepulchers, each decorated by twisted, miserably disfigured figures distended and warped into unnatural shapes.

"Those look a bit too reminiscent of what we saw in the town."  Grabbing a nearby brush, Freyd ran its hefty bristles over the worn, sculptured stone, failing to bring much much clarity.  "Eh?  How did that make the winds die down?!  This place is just... weird."

"I can't speak for the others," Wulfrin spoke as he grabbed his own set of cleaning supplies. "But I have found it quite difficult to go scouring the floor. However that is to be expected considering how fresh I am."

Following Freyd's intuition, Wulfrin knelt down and brushed the bristles across another gravestone. His attention wasn't too focused on the stone before him, instead his eyes drifted over the graveyard as a whole. Massive blobs of inconceivable matter slowly shifted across the grounds. Freyd's observation was correct. These things, whatever they were, had been plaguing the frontline's progress since they first emerged from Callisto's lair. The absence of any native NPCs didn't exactly aid the already harsh environment of the floor.

"Perhaps we'll find something related to what's plaguing the floor," Wulfrin added as he moved to the next stone. "Surely there is something that can tell us what happened to the NPCs and why there aren't any safe zones to be found."

Another boom of thunder echoed overhead.

"At least we managed to keep those eager players alive," Wulfrin spoke reflecting back on the initial flood. "Well mostly."

"Please don't say 'plague' out loud.  This floor seems to have enough bad ideas on its own, without us helping it along."  Having only cleared the stone out of sheer curiosity, the storm itself seemed to lose strength as they tended to the remnants of this place.  "Huh. Would you look at that.  Looks like you might have stumbled onto something."

Wandering over to the nearest sepulcher, Freyd diligently traced various symbols and markers built into its ornate exterior, like he was following some sort of secretive map.  "I've seen some of these markings around.  No idea what any of them mean but..."  A wincing glance in the direction of the church spotted a few more matching those he'd only just cleansed of their grit and grime patina. "There are symbols etched in the entablature over the front door.  See?  There. Some sort of long-nosed fish, maybe a bird and that last one looks like a cross between a pig and a crocodile."  Looks were exchanged.

"What?  I didn't carve it.  You tell me what you think it's supposed to be.  The darn stone is so worn it could be Wushan cross-dressing as a Ladonian dancing girl, for all we know."

Wrapping up his efforts to clean off the first symbol, Freyd motioned his companion to tend to the really weird one while he moved to the bird.  Bad move.  This one was just as messed up, if not moreso, the thing's wings turning out to be some sort of nasty-looking four-armed monstrosity with a bell fetish.  "Looks a bit like that Ripper dude from the last floor, but with more bludgeoning, and percussive musical talent.  Maybe?  I dunno.  Could be a stretch."

"I have no frame of reference," Wulfrin sighed as Freyd continued with his odd descriptions of the carvings. "The bird like one could be a condor, like the Nazca Lines, but that's also a stretch. As for your so called ripper, I've not gotten a chance to tango with that one."

Wulfrin turned his attention to his own carvings. None of which made any more sense that the ones pointed out by The Whisper. The same imagery repeated, a four armed mass holding a chain with a bell affixed. Could that possibly be the secret this place was trying to hide. The whole thing was giving Wulfrin the heeby geebies. Wulfrin moved carefuly through the graveyard, but something still felt off. That was when he hear the bell toll.

A flash of lightning illuminated the area and drew Wulfrin's attention to a stele untouched by the elements.

"Uh Freyd..." Wulfrin's voice was Shakey as he tried to get The Whisper's attention. "Did we die and I not realize it? This stele literally has our names on it."

"Really?!"  Freyd's voice sounded only half-concerned, the balance carrying that same morbid curiosity you might find in a child you'd just told about something gruesome.  Or perhaps it was that same trait that attracted people to watch horror movies?  Freyd didn't seem like the latter, likely getting bored and falling asleep at the supposed 'scary bits'.  If anything, time spent in purest survival mode on the front lines of Aincrad will have dulled most of their panic instincts.  Then he though about some of the other players he knew and wondered whether that assuming was entirely true.

Still half-daydreaming, half-marveling at the novelty tombstone before them, neither man noticed the four-armed undead horror rising from the tomb behind them.  Until bell shaped flails on wicked barbed chain links rattled loud enough to wake the dead, which they fortunately did not.  They did spook the bejesus out of Freyd, however, who instantly cursed aloud for allowing himself to get so distracted.

Barely turning to raise his weapon in time, it was Reliq who saved him, the spoopy little mimic giggling loudly as it sought to embed itself in one or more of the mob's dangling bells, completely messing up its ambush.  Chains wound and wrapped.  Bells gonged and clanked loudly, binding against each other so tightly that the Pallid Mask could no longer wield any of them effectively.

"Thanks, little guy.  We owe you on this one."

  • 2 weeks later...

"Ditto," Wulfrin added as he quickly spun around, celestial steel blade ready to strike. "Who or whatever you are."

Wulfrin's blade arced through the air towards the frantically waving four armed figure before them. The Blade of Zariel's holy aura caused a blinding surge of radiance as it clashed with the monster's hide, amplified by the divine light of Wulfrin's crystal. In an instant the eldritch horror grave keeper's health bar depleted. From the skies above, Wulfrin's familiar Solaris got in on the action, raking talons across the mob as well as plucking at what would have been its eyes. The two warriors stood side by side. Master and student raising blade in coordinated unison, now on more equal footing than ever.

"So when were you planning on introducing us?" Wulfrin joked towards Freyd as the Pallid Mask finally shook off its restraints. "Also he isn't going to try and devour my field kit is he? I've got several important projects going on that I need to keep in one piece."

"That would be Reliq," Freyd replied, watching as the gaunt horror resumed its movements to the clink and clatter of bells and chains.  "Elora and I found him in my workshop, playing in all the unidentified gear I keep laying around."  He left out the bit about how Elora had freaked out, thinking their home was somehow haunted because of all his clandestine puttering around.  It had taken nearly a week to clear out all the anti-voodoo tchotchkes she'd layered all over the place.

"I think he's some sort of mimic, but can't get him to sit still long enough to be sure." A flash of deep blue eyes left him daydreaming and mussed up his timing enough to miss the chain slunk around him ankle.  As Freyd moved to pincer with Wulfrin's attack, the chain pulled taught taking away his footing and dignity alike.  Cursing and rolling to tumble away from the mob's follow up, he grudgingly admired that it had taken advantage of his distraction.  Samael's Pride sundered the binding wrapped around his boot, but it would take him a moment to properly re-engage.

"Damn.  It's a fast one for its size."  The same could be said for his new familiar, though Freyd secretly wondered if he spent every evening snorting cookie dust and was just running on a constant sugar high.

"As to your kit... I can't make any promises."

"But I'm faster," Wulfrin grinned as The Pallid Mask moved to intercept him.

Wulfrin's blade was bright with the familiar stunning sword art granted to just about every player in Aincrad, assuming they maxed their weapon skill. Wulfrin bobbed and weaved between lashes from the undead horror's many arms. His foe was quick, but not fast enough as his blade plunged into the shadowy mass. The Pallid Mask stumbled back, its attack successfully halted by the technical specialist. Wulfrin planted his feet and readied his blade as the health bar dropped to a sliver.

"Aw come on," Wulfrin huffed eyeing the remaining sliver of red with disdain and disappointment. "How much you think it's got left? Can't be that much right? I think I got robbed. In a graveyard. You think it counts as graverobbing?"

Wulfrin watched as the familiars pulled away form their undead foe. It had recovered form Wulfrin's attack and seemed to be struggling to make up its mind as to which swordsman to strike first. Aside from the miss by Freyd, the duo were making excellent time.

The rasping wretch reared back, all remaining chain whips ready to lash and bludgeon Wulfrin to pieces for his boasting, no matter how warranted. What should have been a danger had proven little challenge for the two of them, its health bar clinging to hope with the thinnest of cellophane.  Ready to heave, the Pallid Mask's hood suddenly jerked back exposing a mess of rotten flesh once called its head, the worst of it concealed behind a grimacing porcelain face.  Yanked roughly, it teetered, all four arms flailing and failing to find purchase as it fell backward toward the greetings of a keen wait and desperate hunger.  For all its ferocity, gravity proved its downfall as its back met the tip of the void's teeth in the form of Samael's Pride.  Freyd simply had to stand and hold the blade aloft while the mob did all the work.  Within seconds, nothing remained of their enemy, and the graves had back their silence.

"Sorry, bub.  Cowls are a trademark thing, and you've been sanctioned for infringement."

Hand-held decimation snikt back into his sheath, the Whisper wiping his hands against each other like the gesture could somehow remove rain.

"You've certainly learned a trick or two, Wulfrin.  It's always nice to see you in action."

Both men received a warning then.  Something about Spectral Knights spawning across the floor, spreading like some mirror-born plague.

"Come on.  We'll have to catch up later.  They're going to need both of us for this."
