History

The Real World

Arrival

Announcement & Aftermath

Born in the village of Shinjō, within the Okayama Prefecture, Aoi was raised alongside three siblings; her older sister (Yoriko) who had three years on her, her older brother (Shinji) who held only a year lead on her, and Kome, the younger sister that all within the family doted upon. Coming from a family that inspired tradition, and a more immediate family that prospered and found a life within the computerised growth that had seen the expulsion of technological advancement, Aoi was swathed in a plethora of various experiences. At a young age she was driven to engage in all manners of traditional events, clubs and camps - her grandparents excited to drive her towards the numerous typical experiences that one would expect to find in Japan. Meanwhile, her parents drove her to integrate with and understand the concepts of technology, hoping that she would one day enter the world with a set of skills that would benefit her in an ever changing world. For Aoi, she found herself enthralled in the various aspects of what each world combined before her - a mixture of olden ideologies, newfound concepts, and a plethora of conflicting ideals that seemed inexplicable and unimportant to her in the moment.

Growing up in Shinjō, Aoi was what many would view as a typical child. Attended schooling, events and various outings as required and spent her free time doing whatever happened to be popular at the time. It wasn't until she had matured slightly and started her high school years that Aoi began to shift away from the typical child like behaviours, becoming as engaged in her online presence as she was in her offline relationships. Where her friends focused on creating dazzling social media presences, though, Aoi found herself moving down a different path in life. Encapsulated with her parent's work in relation to video games, Aoi's online presence took the form of online gameplay as well as social media focused around such connections.

A natural social butterfly who was capable of adjusting her persona as required by her audience, Aoi found herself delving into the world of online gaming with a curiosity that quickly burned into a passion. When online streaming became popular, she leapt on the experience with a keen reservation - desiring the community that came with it, and yet hesitant about the pressure that formed around those who anticipated entertainment and something more. Though she never made it into stardom during her time, she found a small group that became her regular attendees when she did stream - placing her appearance online in tandem with her college attendance. Battling the difficulties of marketing school during the day, and the challenge of engaging in her online gaming at night without falling behind on her work, Aoi excelled at neither of her chosen activities. When she eventually graduated into the world, and began looking for work in truth, she found herself relying upon references and friendships more than her own skill sets in beginning her career.

Whether through luck, or some unspoken action that was never brought to light, she found herself hired by the gaming company that her own parents had spent the last decade working at; hired to advertise and bring to light a new game that was meant to rival the top triple A selections that had entered the market. Under the guidance of her superiors, Aoi brought her connections through her online streaming, as well as those she'd made during her college years, in order to promote Argus's new technological advancement in gaming.

In thanks for her efforts - efforts which led to an increase in interest for the game itself - Aoi was gifted a personal copy of the newly released Sword Art Online, given the chance to join the world on its opening day with thousands of other players in a moment that would change her forever.

Launch day was an exciting time for Aoi, as she initialised and began her descent into the world that would become her new home - though she knew none of that at the time. Planning on attending only long enough to determine whether it would provide a wonderful experience to stream, as she'd promised many during her marketing adventure leading up to the launch day, Aoi had found herself amazed by what greeted her within the system.

Never before having engaged with the NerveGear, or full dive gear of any measure, in any expanded capacity she had found herself enthralled by the realism of the world that greeted her. Taking time to create her character - Sakura, so named after the cherry blossoms that had marked her identity for decades now - she was among the final few to enter the world hours after its start.

Though she had planned on nothing more than a couple of hours of quick exploration, Aoi had found herself drawn into the world of Aincrad almost immediately. Struggling at first with the concept of the game's mechanics - everything being both natural, and unnatural at the same moment - she had barely begun to explore the outer regions of the Town of Beginning before calamity fell.

Though only barely introduced to the world, Aoi found herself transitioned to the main courtyard of the Town of Beginning alongside thousands of others; one among a crowd of confused individuals. Though she had anticipated some announcement to declare the success that was the launch, a marketing trick that she had suggested at one meeting or another, she was as shocked as any other in the vicinity at their sudden relocation.

As the form of the game master appeared, and the words began rolling across the courtyard, Aoi found herself smiling in excitement and anticipation. She could see, in some instances that may have been fabricated for her own personal glorification, similar actions, movements and words that she had suggested be used when welcoming players for the first time.

What enjoyment and enthusiasm she had for the announcement was quickly wiped away, however, as the reality of their situation was announced without hesitation. Stages of grief passed over her in a swathe; denial, argument, sorrow, acceptance all passing through her mind and face in the mere fractions of instances it took for many others to experience the same emotions.

When the final words echoed throughout the now empty air, and the truth settled upon those who had listened in quiet contemplation, Aoi found herself turning towards the person beside her. Her eyes were wide, and her expression must have shown some measure of fear, because the individual suddenly screamed and leapt away. She watched in confusion and horror as they leapt off the balcony of the courtyard, disappearing into the aether below, and leaving Aoi remaining in place, wondering what their name had been.

As the seconds turned into hours, Aoi had dragged herself from the courtyard where the announcement had occurred. Following other players who appeared put together and competent, she had managed to align herself with a group that was kind enough to escort her through the very foundations of exploration, calling upon her knowledge of other games to apply in immediate fashion upon her new existence. Though only time would tell what would come from her new reality, Aoi promised herself that she would at least fight to stay alive - to find a way back out into the world beyond, and to warn others of the horror that had become the world of Aincrad.

Present Day

-

The days following the announcement had been chaotic. Though Aoi had accompanied another group along the roads that led to Tolbana, she had quickly found herself left behind as more capable players stepped forward to take her place. Slowly, with each group finding someone else to take the position she had once offered, she was driven to a point of stalling and stagnation.

She knew, in the depths of her mind and heart, that it was only logical - among those she had crossed, few carried as little awareness of virtual reality and mass multiplayer games as Aoi herself carried. She was, in earnest, a burden more than a benefit to those around her, and though she wanted to face anything but the truth in the situation at hand, she was aware that it made more sense to take those capable of keeping their companions alive.

The knowledge didn't hinder Aoi, though, and she found herself continuing upon a slower path. One which led her to develop skills that many others passed upon, but were prevalent nonetheless. Slowly, she shifted away from the continued race to clear the world, instead focusing upon keeping herself alive and developing her skills to a point where they could be useful.

Days turned into weeks, weeks into something longer before Aoi realised that she was ready to press onwards. Preparing herself to face the world, she grabbed her equipment and determined a path forward, ready to face the challenges she hadn't been capable of facing before...

Virtues

Flaws

Adaptable. No matter the situation she faces, Aoi has always been known to adapt and overcome. Whether it be new social circles and interactions, challenges that she hasn't faced before, or experiences that would leave many others questioning their fates, Aoi has always shown a quick reaction to not only engage with, but excel. Though success isn't always her goal, Aoi has proven to be quick to adapt and integrate with whatever she faces - no matter the awkwardness that may appear at first contact.

Animated. Always moving, always active. Coming from various experiences where presentation is created through the concept of catching the eyes of the audience, Aoi has naturally become an animated piece designed to draw attention. While not a flashing eyesore, she instinctively incorporated animated movements designed to draw eyes towards her in order to make herself the centre of focus - sometimes against her own will and desire.

Charming. Pairing with her natural animation and behaviours, many have described Aoi as charming. Welcoming, friendly, and capable of putting most at ease when they first interact, she flows with an aura that almost seems too comfortable to some. Though no charlatan by any means, Aoi is more comfortable requesting things of people than many others - and more oft than naught she is met with a measure of acceptance, and like-minded comfort. Well aware of her charming nature, she is careful not to abuse the personal skill, knowing that such action could lead to ruin faster than outwardly harming those she comes across.

Empathetic. Calm, controlled and oft considered a good listener, Aoi has developed a level of empathy that has brought many back to her time and again. A naturally caring individual, she is known to listen and hear what others have to say - giving comfort as quickly as she gives advice and ideas. Though not purposeful, Aoi has always leaned upon her empathetic side in order to find better standings with those around her, balancing her adaptability and animation with a measure of comfort that makes those around her more comfortable in her presence.

Capricious. Born through her engagement with online streaming, as well as a taught behaviour as a part of her marketing background, Aoi leaps from topic to topic, idea to idea with a bounding energy. Sometimes hard to follow, her flowing energy has annoyed many people who have had to deal with her bounding mindset - more oft than naught leaving complaints behind as she moved forward with a new idea, or path before others could realise the shift. Never truly confirmed through testing, many have suggested that Aoi held some form of attention disorder which caused her to think in a more scattered pattern than her peers, though Aoi herself never saw it as a flaw.

Eccentric. Paired with her capricious and spontaneous behaviours, Aoi was always known to be eccentric and over the top to her immediate family. Welcomed as she was within their familial circle, she would frequently be told to calm herself - especially when topics of interest arose. Perhaps never reaching a true level of annoying, Aoi has numerous times been told she was off putting with her over the top behaviour, and she was well aware that some had left her streams behind being unable to match or meet her energy levels.

Inexperienced. While she spent most of her younger years playing games, Aoi had never truly entered the realms of virtual reality or massive online gaming experiences. This lack of experience has left her somewhat behind in the world of Aincrad, as she fumbled to keep up with those ahead of her. Due to her inexperience with massive multiplayer games, and the NerveGear system in general, Aoi has found herself lagging behind many other players - her skills suffering where her charms can't assist her.

Sarcastic. Contrary to her upbringing and traditional learnings, Aoi developed a natural level of sarcasm during her online periods. Transitioning into her real life, she developed a sense of humour that made her stand out against her peers - tendered in a way that was accepted in most cases, but could be off putting to many unfamiliar with the behaviour. Though never used in a manner of contempt or insult, her sarcasm has landed her in difficult spots many times - especially in the online world of Aincrad, where behaviours don't always match their appearance.
