Freyd 0 Posted June 29 #1 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Having gathered the squad on the outskirts of Urbus, Freyd's briefing was provided on the go. The plan was to hit as many field bosses as possible in advance of the next guild raid and stock up their larder with as many spare goodies as possible It would also be good coordination and teamwork practice for them, though the group had fared well in their stand-off against the early spawns of Spectral Knights afflicting floor twenty-nine. As those multiplied and spread, efficiency in response would only become more vital. "We'll start by hitting the wasp queen not far from here, then up to the fifth, ninth and thirteenth, respectively. Each of the field bosses on these floors provide rare and valuable consumables often relied upon during raids. They can also teach you a thing or two about mechanics and pacing during engagement, tactical and strategic advantages you can use to win, or at least survive to fight again." *** Note: CS (Shades of the Gemini) and CSA (Beckon the Void) are in use. If any other player objects to these, please state in first post and it will be considered inactive. Foyle 0 Posted June 29 #2 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Nodding and marching in lock step with his captain, Foyle absorbed everything like a dutiful sponge. Freyd had seen more than most, so he'd be foolish to turn aside experience so freely shared, but Foyle's own age made keeping up with ever-changing game dynamics a challenge. He just wasn't used to it anymore. At least learning archery seemed to suit him better then the melee weapons most players preferred. Weighing the curved wood in his hands, he oiled the tool regularly, and with great care. Every piece of his equipment, in fact, was in utterly immaculate condition. Even where worn and weathered, each component was maintained in good repair. Old habits died hard. "A wasp, you said? How was this beast defeated prior to the availability of ranged attacks?" Freyd smiled without mockery, appreciating the extra-dimensional thinking behind such questions. "Programming constraints kept it close to the ground, but you're on the right track. Keep posing those sorts of questions, Foyle. They're the best kind." *** GUILD RANK 5 (+5% col, +5% EXP) Assist Mode activated: (+15% EXP) Level: 30 Paragon: 0 Tier: 3 True Tier: 4 Foyle consumes: Grindstone | -3 Field Boss Post Count requirements; reduces this value to a minimum of 1 post. Rencesvals 0 Posted June 29 #3 Share Posted June 29 (edited) "Something must be wrong. My stats just went all wonky on me. Anyone else seeing this?" "That's the level suppression system," Jeeves replied, all while recalibrating his wrist-mounted bolter. "We're going to game the system a bit and optimize our yield. Smart. No sense blowing a ton of time and effort on marginal results. Good thinking, boss." Freyd merely grinned, glad to see their resident tinkerer join the conversation for a change. "Oh. That's a thing? Did I miss a memo? The shop's been so busy lately, plus all the panic over those mirror mobs..." "It's fine, Ren. Stop stressing. Trust that your captain has your back." Foyle offered a fatherly smile, recognizing how the taller youth flitted so rapidly to worst case scenarios. He'd learned enough about Ren's early days in Aincrad to understand why. Freyd let them banter while they walked, his own talents already honing in on their target, wondering whether Shiina still had the compound eyes he'd once given her to use as a sled. *** GUILD RANK 5 (+5% col, +5% EXP) Assist Mode activated:(+15 EXP) Level: 30 Paragon: 0 Tier: 3 True Tier: 4 Rencesvals consumes: Gungir’s Shard (Untradeable/Unique/Reusable Consumable): Smokin' Hot Honey Bun Tray | ACC 2 | EVA 2 | Feast (4/6) - 1 portion + ACC filled Rencesvals | HP: 615/615 | EN: 83/83 | TECH | FOCUS | DMG: 16 | MIT:73 | ACC:7 | EVA:3 | BH:34 | HM: 2 | BLD: 12 | PARA Spoiler Name: Rencesvals True Tier: 4 Level: 30 Paragon Level: 0 HP: 615/615 EN: 83/83 Stats: Damage: 12+4 Mitigation: 73 Accuracy: 4+2+1 Evasion: 1+2 Battle Healing: 34 Stealth Rating: -5 HM: 2 BLD: 12 PARA Biting x2 (Specialties) Equipped Gear: Weapon/Armor/Trinket: - Durendal (v.III) | T2 Perfect | BLD I | PARA II Armor/Trinket: - Black Regalia (v.IIV | T4 MIT III | HM I Shield/Armor/Trinket: - Lark & Nightingale Pin | ACC 3 | EVA 1 Combat Mastery: - Combat Mastery: Damage R3 Combat Shift: - TECH Shift Skills: - Battle Healing R5 - Energist - Heavy Armor R5 - Straight Sword R5 Extra Skills: - Survival Addons: - Focus - Iron Skin - Precision - Stamina Mods: - Impetus Battle Ready Inventory: - Starter Healing Potion x2 Housing Buffs: - Bedroom: -1 energy cost for the first two expenditures of each combat - Bathroom: The first time you would suffer DoT damage in a thread, reduce damage taken from DoT each turn by 20% (rounded down) - Basic Kitchen: Increase the effectiveness of a single food item consumed in a thread by +1 T1 slot. Jeeves 0 Posted June 29 #4 Share Posted June 29 (edited) "There. That should add a bit of oomph while also mitigating recoil. I just hope it doesn't compromise accuracy in exchange." Tuning out Ren's worry-warting, Jeeves checked the rest of his gear to ensure that he had everything ready to go. Still statistically behind the others, he cared little so long as they kept up their carries. Their recent bouts with the knights had also taught him a lesson about patience and caution, as a small sample taken suddenly ruptured and spawned a whole "Hey, Freyd. Whatever happened to you after that Spectral tossed your hide overboard on twenty nine. Glad you're safe, and all, but where did it send you?" "Tomoika." "Tomoika?!" Like the name alone explained anything. "What do you mean, Tomoika? The mining town on the twenty first? How the heck did it shunt you across eight floors. Freyd 0 Posted June 29 Author #5 Share Posted June 29 (edited) A buzzing drone filled their ears as they rounded into a rocky valley pock marked with giant pasty holes and teeming with an overabundance of flying insects, all of various disturbingly large sizes. Singling out the one they wanted wasn't hard. She was the biggest and nastiest of the lot, and in the dead centre of the swarm. Propelling himself, Oscar-styles, Freyd launched like a tomahawk and clipped the queen's wings with his opening strike. A sizzle and crackle confirmed that Veritas had struck true, denying the mobility she relied upon as her primary defense. As the rest of the wasps scattered, panicked by the fear pheromones released at the heart of their cloud, the rest of the crew instantly fell upon their exposed prey. "Foyle. Her thorax is weakest between her wings." Death's arrow was loosed an instant later, to the captain's great delight, while the rest of the party was already moving to flank. *** Spoiler Post Action | AoE-I (x11, 7 EN, +2 shift, +2/hit): 9 EN - (Rested 2/2; Stamina) = 6 EN. Foyle 0 Posted June 29 #6 Share Posted June 29 (edited) "Hai!" String drawn and released, Foyle's missile found its mark, exactly as instructed. Catching the queen mid freefall, he hadn't expected to see her defeated so quickly and stared wide-eyed as only fractal remains reached the ground. "That.. that was it?" "Yup," clapped the captain, suddenly standing at his side. "You've already surpassed most of what we're likely to encounter today, though the system would have you think it's beyond you. Watch. Learn. See how combining your attacks can have an added impact. Then, imagine what could be done if all of Aincrad could actually get its act together and do the same." Barely a glimpse of the grander design, it was enough to leave the others momentarily stunned by the sheer scale of possibility. "Fascinating." Freyd 0 Posted June 29 Author #7 Share Posted June 29 (edited) "Next one's up on five," Freyd reminded, reaching out his hand to Ren and instructing the others to link theirs as well. "We're taking a bit of a shortcut to get there, so brace your breath and do not let go of each other under any circumstances." Peeling back reality's veneer, Freyd slipped beneath the world and through the absent void behind all things. They rest followed, more by default than choice, chilled and terrified at their first glimpsed of total nothingness. A wall of heat suddenly assaulted them, cold mountainous surroundings replaced by the orange and red sandstone of Fortaleza's blazing sun-scorched outskirts. "Mutant bullet to the west, and standard issue sand sharks are on special to the south. Follow me. And I hope you all appreciate the bit of pre-chilling to contrast with the furnace temperatures. Rencesvals 0 Posted June 29 #8 Share Posted June 29 (edited) From shivers to death sweats, Ren struggled to manage the shift of extremes. Staggering from rock to sandy soils with literally nothing in between, he stumbled and grabbed ground to to stabilize his sense. "Hurk... what... what was that?! I just... need a minute to make sure down is down again." Green might typically compliment purple, but he doubted that was the case when it was the colour his face turned. Speaking of turning, his breakfast was having serious digestive maelstrom issues. "I just... Freyd?" Eyes searching for answers, they met only icy cold orbs glaring back at him from beneath the captain's cowl. Another test, he suddenly realized, wondering what this was all really about. "The unknown is never easy to endure," Freyd replied, offering the purple paladin a hand and helping him slowly back to his feet. "And battle rarely holds off while we recover. Be sure to remember that." Edited June 30 by Rencesvals
Jeeves 0 Posted June 29 #9 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Unlike his counterparts, Jeeves seemed completely unphased by their netherworld passage, emerging on the blistering side with arm raised and aim already set. A subtle twang and yelp as his bolt found its mark, the mob having not even revealed its presence or proximity to the rest. "Found it." Voice cold and self-assured as he swiftly reloaded, already dreaming up designs for his next prototype. Something with self-loading or repeating capacity would be nice. "Underbelly would be softest, but you might all just as well punch through its exoskeleton. This one's not so tough that it could withstand much for long." A second shot fired for good measure stuck the rearing sand shark in the eye, the creature flailing in anguish as its optics partially fizzled and died. "Foyle. Think you could hit the other one? Rencesvals 0 Posted June 29 #10 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Grateful for his captain's help and reassurance, Ren stilled his rebellious innards and rushed forward. Bowling over the exposed shark, he sent its gritty rubber-like form crashing into a nearby rock formation, overloading its already struggling sensory perceptions and leaving the monster staggered and dazed. Returning a wry grin, Ren's expression turned as quickly as the mob had and he promptly hurled his breakfast all over the desert floor. "Points for effort, I guess," Freyd added, patting him on the back as he dry heaved. "Guess the void isn't for everyone." Waving him off, Ren made half-hearted efforts to keep going before barfing out the last of his stomach contents. "Wouldn't be a real training session if someone hadn't done it," Foyle replied, eyes on the prize down the length of an arrow shaft set and ready to loose. *** Spoiler Post Action | TECH-A (x10, 11 EN, +3 shift): 14 EN - (Rested 2/2, Stamina) = 11 EN. Foyle 0 Posted June 29 #11 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Flying true, black and red fletching spiraling towards their goal, Foyle's shot found its mark and plunged right through it, shattering their quarry like an AR-15 might a slumbering goose. Fish in a barrel might be harder, by comparison. "That'll be five col, squirt." Jeeves looked about ready to protest when he realized how his hated nickname had been avoided. He'd also lost, fair and square, flicking a coin through the air to be deftly caught by the archer's hand. "Where to next, captain, and maybe we should skip your shortcuts this time, for our companion's sake. I believe Fortaleza isn't far." Waiting for the nod to proceed, he soon had them ambling over dunes in search of the "Should we stop by Abdullah's place while we're there?" All three training simply groaned, hoping it was only a joke. Freyd's feud with the local mob boss was nearly legendary, along with the infamous shark bait training program that had spurred to every spiraling heights. *** Spoiler Post Action | ST-B (x17, 17 EN, +2 shift): 19 EN - (Stamina) = 17 EN. Jeeves 0 Posted June 29 #12 Share Posted June 29 (edited) "Floor Nine. Yogan Village." Each member of the squad repeated the words, vanishing one by one to travel from one unbearable hellhole to another. But, whereas the former would suck the moisture from your bones, parch the skin until it flaked off, then bleach your bones, this one would just melt you in a pool of molten magma or fill your lungs with toxic fumes. Verdicts were out on which was worse, but neither received especially fond reviews. "Firebird, right? Hey, Ren. Isn't your familiar a phoenix? Is this where you found it?" Ren shook his head in the negative. "I found her on seven, actually. Their breeding grounds are more expansive than most people realize..." The professor's dissertation continued, but Jeeves had already tuned out, preferring to find something squawky and explosive to shoot at. "Liquid nitrogen darts," he muttered, making a mental note to add them to his growing list of things to tinker with when they got back to the guild hall. *** Jeeves uses grindstone | https://www.sao-rpg.com/topic/41191-guild-token-merchant/?do=findComment&comment=697743 Respawn Counter: 15-spyglass (5) - grindstone (3) - posts (1) = 6 posts Edited June 30 by Jeeves
Freyd 0 Posted June 29 Author #13 Share Posted June 29 (edited) "This one moves around a lot more than the others we've hunted today. It prefers the hottest, least approachable habitats, often accessible only by air. The phoenix is smart, though somewhat fragile." Having already caught sight of their quarry via shadow, it was now just a matter of marrying eclectic perspectives together with visible landmarks in order to guide them toward their goal. "Foyle, stand ready. We might need you to incapacitate it if it tries to flee or outmaneuver us. Jeeves is the backup, his range being more limited. Ren and I pounce and tear its feathery heart out as soon as we have within reach. Everyone good with that?" Three heads nodded in unison, beaming a sense of pride at their growing cohesion. Vibrant reds flurries in feather form on their left, the group scattering to cover more ground and claim advantageous positions. Freyd retreated to shade and scoured their surrounding like some sort of spoopy AWACS waiting for its target to come out of hiding and let loose its hawks. *** Freyd uses tracking Respawn Counter: 15-spyglass (5) - grindstone (3) - tracking (5) posts (2) = 0 posts Edited June 30 by Freyd
Rencesvals 0 Posted June 29 #14 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Between the lot of them, none expected Ren to be the one to land the first blow, especially not by leaping high like a madman on parcour, bouncing and rounding off the local canyon walls to reach the target. "What the actual f..." Even Jeeves marveled as the frequently cumbersome knight slammed his blade into the bird, sending it spiraling to ground where it crashed with a resounding impact. The crater alone was impressive. Unlike his embarrassing performance on five, this place was more familiar. Specifically, it was rich in ore, having drawn the smith to visit on more than one occasion and teaching him a trick or two about strange local gravitic fluctuations. The bird was likely less impressed, its beak kissing the basalt ground in a brutal collision sure to leave a mark. Shaking off its initial daze, it wasn't sure what to make of the four Ren's floating about its vision, all looking at it in the same strange manner. *** Spoiler Post Action | ST-B (x20, 20 EN): 20 EN - (Rested 2/2, Stamina) = 17 EN. Freyd 0 Posted June 29 Author #15 Share Posted June 29 (edited) The last thing anyone expected, least of all the pheonix, was to see a purplish ball of tentacles come sailing at it through the air in a tizzy of hugs and fart giggles. Freyd had tossed his familiar at the boss, figuring Reliq could face-hug it into apoplexy while the rest of them closed ranks and pummeled the poor thing into pieces. Cruel, perhaps, but oddly effective. Sidestepping the indigo face-suckers squelching form, Freyd found enough feather to take a stab at and deliver some damage. A shrill whistle call the mimic back to him, exposing a frantic-looking bird that had only just woken and thought it might be nice to go out in search of a morning meal. Mondays. Right? "Watch out for the rebirth. This thing gets downright scorching when it dies then comes back. Not overly tough, if you can knock it out of the air and deny its mobility. Nice moves there, Ren, by the way. Not what I would have expected after the desert hurlmongering." *** Spoiler Post Action | AoE-I (x15, 11 EN, +2 shift, +2/hit): 15 EN - (Rested 2/2; Stamina) = 12 EN. Jeeves 0 Posted June 29 #16 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Sliding through a field of loose gravel as he moved to get a clear shot, Jeeves timed it just well enough to catch a glimpse of red among purple and fire. Planting his forward foot hard into unstable ground gave him just enough purchase to slow and stop on a pivot, whirling a full three-sixty while he reloaded and fired again. The game's firing algorithms made it easier, tracking in lead time to setup a reticule for ridicule, which he promptly took advantage of every time. Why wouldn't he? The phoenix, meanwhile, was looking rather dour, having been beat up before it could do much of anything to respond or escape. But that was the entire point. Despite Ren's penchant for seeking fair play, the others understood the necessity of action. Jeeves wondered why Ren was here at all, and had once asked the captain. "Every head needs a conscience to set it straight, once in awhile," Freyd had replied. Looking towards the purple paladin, Jeeves just didn't see it. *** Spoiler Post Action | AoE-I (x15, 11 EN, +2 shift, +2/hit): 15 EN - (Stamina) = 13 EN. Foyle 0 Posted June 29 #17 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Like a meteor streaking between them Foyle's shot struck precisely through the big bird's fiery heart. Loosed with the purest of intention, Foyle felt an inkling of pride as the mob fell, only to falter slightly as the thing's corpse combusted. An instant later, it was reborn as a creature of pure eldritch fire, blazing back to life between the others. "Damn. Sorry! Should have warned you!" He wasn't actually expecting the effect to be quite so explosive. As the brimstone cleared, the rest of the party appeared unharmed, though maybe a little singed along the edges. They still had it cornered and the bird struggled to right itself in the wake of their relentless assaults. For now, his part was largely over, the melee getting too tight for a clear shot. Freyd 0 Posted June 29 Author #18 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Stepping in to seal the deal, Freyd's blade struck true, cleaving the bird's left wing from the rest of its body, both halves tumbling ignobly to the ground. Cawing mutely as its fractured form withered back to nothingness, integrity lost and fading to nothing more than desiccating fractal shards, the surrounding players guarded themselves, wary of another potential burst. None came. The mob was truly and fully defeated. "Nicely done. Good effort on the part of all. I'd say your coordination and timing is improving. Our last foe will test you further, putting together everything we've faced so far." "You said something about floor thirteen," Foyle chimed in. "Isn't that where you used to live? The floor full of zombie sludge people and defiled churches?" The cowl nodded, silently. "Though defiled churches are plentiful everywhere. Rencesvals 0 Posted June 29 #19 Share Posted June 29 (edited) Returning to Yogan village, the group shared tales and perspectives, learning from each other's strengths and weakness and how best to pair them off for the sake of the unit. Ren felt pre-occupied, the thought of traveling to the thirteenth floor weighing him down. The motifs of that particular level most closely matched his own interest and studies, yet terrified him at the same time for the failure they represented. "Something on your mind?" Freyd had slipped back and away from the other two, matching pace with the paladin as they walked back to the portal. "Just... I never quite cut it as a tank. And despite all my good intentions. I don't know. It makes all this feel like fraud." Thick gauntlets gestured to all of him, guilt riding his features. "Why would that be?" The Whisper walked solemnly at his side, voice low to preserve their privacy. "You're more than proven your mettle, time and again. And we all stumble from time to time, Ren. That's the whole point of having a team. To help us find our footing again, or stand tall when the weight of the world is pressing down. Freyd 0 Posted June 29 Author #20 Share Posted June 29 (edited) "I would have liked to have been on this floor when everything happened. Not that I could have done anything, but it's nice to dream that it might have been possible. So much was lost." Taking in the worn, fog-slick white stone of Angel Point's few remaining buildings, and many ruins beyond. Freyd had called this place home for many years - a place away from any interest, forgotten to the tragic wake of its own demise. Was it truly saved, or just prevented from reaching a deeper, more infernal layer of hell? "Eladriel keeps to a series of battlements to the east, possibly the site of his fall from grace. Just use what you've learned. Gird yourself against fear and worry. We'll be fine, so long as we fight as one." Gripping Ren's shoulder as he passed, the captain locked eyes with each of them in turn to offer reassurance. Eyes peering into the town's ample, dreary shadows, Freyd found what they were seeking. A fallen angel. This one always felt a little personal, though he could never quite place his finger on why. *** Freyd uses Tracking Respawn Counter: 15-spyglass (5) - tracking (5) grindstone (3) - posts (2) = 0 posts Edited June 30 by Freyd
