[PP-PT-F17] RE: Hackman's Message

The message came at midnight.

Morningstar wasn't asleep. He should have been, and normally would have been, but the onslaught of Spectral Knights had kept him in the field long past bed time. He, alongside Freyd, Wulfrin, and Ciela, had been outside Donoghue's when the knights stopped spawning. No system message came through--no explanation for the suddenness of it all. They came and they left, and everything went quiet.

He was pleased when he realized it was over. For him, the workday rarely ended at 4:00, but midnight was a new late. The journey home was long, and the weary Morningstar only made it as far as the Ilridge teleporter before the message came through.

A message directed to every frontliner was rare to see. Who in the world was Hackman?

He read the message, and the words 'floor boss' burned in his eyes. The waypoint on his map led northward, to the edge of the Black. As much as he wanted to drop everything and follow it, he needed rest.

The following morning, he sent word for a few allies to join him at the Nemean Plain.

Brrip.

Acanthus rolled over, shaking off a deep and dreamless sleep. Her head throbbed only a little. Groggily, she tried opening her menu once, then twice, and then finally managed on the third swipe.

MORNINGSTAR: want to talk about last night's message. can kill some field bosses while we do. meet at noon?

Acanthus startled, falling onto the marble floor with a solid *thwack*, and the reminder that she was presently in a safe zone. The message sent anxious chills all the way down her back. What message? What did I say to him? I don’t remember sending anything—did I send something? Maybe I missed a group chat? God dammit, and after we had that moment where I thought he wasn’t mad at me anymore… Maybe Morningstar decided to walk back his forgiveness? Or worse, he was planning an elaborate test to see if she could be trusted. It was the only logical conclusion. (She would arrive at the meeting point still uncertain, acting somewhere between a lost dog and a cornered one.)

Another unread message flickered in her inbox. Oh. That’s strange. Who was Hackman; and…

The Floor Boss. It was time. Acanthus bounced up and ran out the door, hastily grabbing weapons and items as she went.

arabelle took one glance at the message and sent it straight to her spam folder.

 

 

the next morning, morningstar invites her to hunt and talk, a prospect she would have found infinitely attractive were she not sleep-deprived and in the middle of reassembling dozens of her wounded pets. still, arabelle considers it over a cup of coffee, her chair turned toward the artificial sun, and sends back a prompt response. 

ARABELLE: Ok!

she returns to the infirmary and supervises a trio of skeletons in medic jackets reattaching another's leg. the patient stands, wobbly at first, and arabelle fixes its farmer's hat back onto its head. she watches it hop around in renewed delight and run back to the fields, then she leaves herself after ensuring that repairs would continue to run smoothly without her. she arrives at floor 17 an hour before their designated meeting, dressed in her usual loose and flowing white and refreshed from a short nap.

Tired, bloodshot eyes must have stared at the message for over an hour at this point. The Floor Boss had been found, though not where expected. This time, there was no room to keep the guardian of the next floor at bay. Instead, it wandered off of the coast of the floor, waiting to be found. 

Waiting to be challenged. 

What was more peculiar was the message they had received, or, more so, who it was from. Hackman, a name that was completely unfamiliar to Jomei, apparently located the boss without much issue while the rest of them took down the Spectral Knights and wave after wave of eldritch abominations. Who was Hackman? What kind of monster did he see? And that message... 

The ginger would pinch the bridge of his nose as he exhaled a sigh as heavy as his eyelids. Every time they would close, his mind would race with what ifs and what he could do to prevent those what ifs. Before long, they would be open again, and the morning would come with little to no sleep. "I can't keep doing this." he would grumble to himself. Shortly after, another message would roll in, this one from Morningstar. A simple invitation to speak about the message and do their own planning while gathering some field boss drops.

He didn't have much brain power for a long winded response, and once the light of his menus was no longer burning his eyes, he would hit the bed and find sleep. Restless, unfulfilling sleep.. but sleep regardless.

He arrived early, a bit stir-crazy and eager to talk about the boss sighting. Not far from him, the Nemean Lion prowled. He sent his coordinates to Jomei, Acanthus, and Arabelle--the three who responded positively to his unanticipated message--and waited for them to follow up.

With so much on his mind, sitting still was tricky for Star, and so he engaged the lion on his own.

Among the lioness' that littered the plains, a single male counterpart roamed. It was a giant in comparison to the rest--muscular, scarred, broad-shouldered. Its sun-bleached mane dragged in the wind like tall grass. It noticed Morningstar immediately, aggro drawn.

Morningstar was morally and ethically against killing animals (at least, the ones he didn't personally eat). It felt cruel, unlike killing monsters. But the Nemean Lion was more monster than animal. Morningstar had no qualms about challenging something that would relish the chance to chew on his head.

a strike from behind -- weaker than morningstar’s but still packing a hefty punch -- and the nemean lion whirls around furiously and its paw comes within inches of colliding with the fluttering white of its attacker.

here is where she’s supposed to take the hit.

…just kidding. she’s picky. getting tossed around like a ragdoll is never a good look.

arabelle tears damocles out of the lion’s hide with a sunny smile. she switches her grip and bats its head back, and it recoils when it makes contact with the spear point at the reverse end of her scythe. “i’ve fought this mob a couple of times before but i’ve never checked if i got the drop. does it matter if we rip its pelt a little…?” her red eyes briefly flick sideways to meet morningstar's amber, as if in the moment, the fight had completely outweighed arabelle's interest in acknowledging her celebrity crush. "oh, and hello! it's not just you and me today, is it?"

Abilities:

  • Leader of the Pack | Every third round, the <<Nemean Lion>> will howl, permanently increasing its DMG by 20 and MIT by 5. This effect can stack up to 3 times.
  • Gnashing Teeth | On an MD 9-10, the <<Nemean Lion>> will hit for 250 DMG, as well as inflict T3 BLEED for 2 turns.
  • Pounce | On a CD 9+, instead of attacking, the boss will pounce on the target with the lowest health instead and deal 225 DMG regardless of MD result.
  • Furry Mane | Any BURN damage to the Lion is doubled and will reduce the EVA to 1 for the duration of the status affliction.
