[F22 - PP|PT] Calm before storm «SotW:SS»

Recommended Posts

The teleport gate’s light bled away behind them, Coral’s rustic warmth shrinking into the birch forest’s embrace. Ariel led, her kimono stark against the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy. Creek water chuckled over smooth stones—a sound too gentle for the gut feeling she had. False peace, she thought. Floor 22’s serenity was a held breath, a fragile illusion before the storm. Every rustle of leaves, every birdcall felt like a countdown. Dracul’s emerald-trimmed coat rustled as he scanned the canopy, his gaze sharp and wary. "A sky this blue feels like mockery," he muttered, the words tight with suppressed tension. Millicent adjusted her grey-blue coat, fingers tracing invisible data streams only she could perceive. "Barometric pressure’s destabilizing. Like… suction." Her voice was a thin wire of anxiety. Darius hefted their supply pack, the carrot-orange trim on his sleeves a bright spot of color in the verdant gloom. "Bridge ahead. Looks mossy. Watch your step."

Ariel’s hand brushed the hilt at her waist. Nihilim’s Wrath hummed, a low throb of heat against her palm. Not pain. Hunger. A living will inside the steel, yearning. Above, a lone cloud wisped—thin, innocent. But the blade knew. It sensed the lightning buried deep beneath the lakebed’s glassy skin, the pulse of Taneuma’s fury waiting to be unleashed. The shadowflame within it stirred, restless. She paused at the creek’s edge, the water clear enough to see pebbles below. It reflected the birches twofold, a shimmering mirror that hid more than it revealed. But beneath that placid surface, something darker stirred. A rumble traveled up through the soles of her boots, a subsonic growl that vibrated in her bones. In her inventory, the Mothra Key pulsed—once, twice—a ghost-drum syncopating with the buried thunder. It was Mortha’s heartbeat, a spectral echo from the past.

Millicent’s voice tightened, pulling Ariel from her thoughts. "Resonance frequency spiking. The lake isn’t just hiding the storm. It’s amplifying it. Like a capacitor charging." Her glasses reflected the too-bright water, hiding her eyes. Ariel unsheathed the blade an inch. Shadowflame licked the steel, tasting the air. It yearned, a predator scenting prey. Soon, she promised it. But dependence was a trap, a chain as heavy as guilt. She slammed it back into the scabbard. The heat faded, leaving resolve colder, harder. She would wield the hunger, not be devoured by it. "Forward," she said. The word cut through the birdsong, a command that brooked no hesitation. The bridge creaked under their weight, moss slick underfoot. Each step was a drumbeat, bringing them closer to the lake, to the storm, to the end. The forest thinned ahead, the light growing brighter. The Lake of Reflection awaited, a silver mirror hiding lightning’s teeth.

Ariel cut through this false paradise with blade-sharp precision, her form a dark stroke against the sickly-sweet greenery. I matched her pace, the emerald trim of my coat flaring like a challenge banner in the deceptive calm. This tranquility was poison. Even the moss trembled with the monster’s subterranean heartbeat, each pulse vibrating through my bootsoles. Darius pointed toward a crumbling bridge ahead, its timbers slick with emerald moss and rotten core. "Structural integrity seems compromised beyond safe parameters. I recommend a perimeter scan for a stable crossing alterna—"

My laugh sliced through his warning—a sharp, silver sound. "Measure courage, not rot!" Lightning. The word tasted of ozone and failure. Behind my eyes flashed the fight with the Suterusu—my impotence of landing hits, the burn of knees hitting mud before a jeering crowd. Never. Again.

The Mothra Key in our inventories throbbed—Thoom. Thoom—Mortha’s spectral drums syncing with the earth’s growl. Millicent paled, fingers twitching near her dagger belt. "Infrasound resonance amplifying charge density. Critical mass in five minutes." Her grey-blue coat drank the shadows, making her a ghost among birches.

Ariel froze. Her blade hissed in its sheath. Shadowflame leaked into the air like drops of spilled oil, coiling toward the lake with palpable hunger. I knew that craving—the clawing need to swallow the storm before it swallowed you. To erase the memory of your own frailty.

I strode onto the bridge. Rot groaned under my weight. "Debate feeds the enemy, Darius!" Let Ariel muzzle her darkness. Mine roared unfettered. Ahead, the Lake of Reflection shimmered—a liar’s looking glass hiding electric fangs. Reeds trembled as if in fear. Static lifted the hairs on my neck. My weapon slid free, its tip etching defiance into the thick air.

Birches wept golden sap onto moss carpets. Dragonflies hung suspended, indifferent spectators. Millicent counted seconds between tremors: "Interval now point-five seconds… accelerating." Darius scanned the tree line, seeking escape routes that dissolved like mist. Futile. Only one exit existed: through the storm’s gnashing teeth. The Mothra Key’s drumbeat hammered against my temples—louder, faster. The very oxygen tasted of scorched metal and coming fury.

Birches thinned to reeds, then surrendered to barren silt. Before them stretched the Lake of Reflection—an immense mercury mirror, blindingly bright and treacherously depthless. Nihilim’s Wrath burned against Ariel’s hip, its shadowflame writhing like a chained beast scenting freedom. Dracul halted, knuckles bone-white on his weapon's hilt. "No clouds. A sniper’s sky." Millicent knelt, pressing her palm flat to the damp mud. "Energy convergence confirmed… focal point dead center." Her coat’s grey-blue hem darkened as water seeped into fabric. Darius unclipped his supply pack. "Trench lines? Caltrops?"

Ariel shook her head once. Taneuma scorned petty traps. The storm was the ambush. The Mothra Key hammered against her thigh—thudthudthud—Mortha’s war drum screaming from the grave. Air thickened until breathing felt like swallowing wool. Static raised the hairs on Darius’s neck. Dracul’s blade caught the light, gleaming like frozen starlight. Millicent’s whisper cut through the silence: "Dielectric rupture in three… two…"

Lightning unmade the world.

No warning. No gathering clouds. A white-hot javelin from heaven speared the lake’s heart. Water didn’t boil—it screeched, a sound that vibrated in molars and marrow. Light became sound became crushing pressure, slamming Ariel backward. Her blade howled in its scabbard, shadowflame exploding against leather—ravenous, triumphant.

From ground zero rose hooves of pure voltage, churning light into liquid rage. Taneuma manifested—a stallion woven from storm cells, mane a crackling whip of ionized air, eyes twin supernova voids. Its reflection doubled it in the mirror-lake: twin engines of annihilation. Ozone seared throats.

"Just like before! Keep you head in the game!" Ariel’s command split the chaos as she unsheathed her sword. Darkened fire lingering up the steel, devouring stray static.

  • Dracul surged forward, weapon raised high. "OVER HERE HORSIE!" His voice tore reality—a sonic hook burying itself in Taneuma’s essence. The beast’s star-core eyes snapped to him. Aggro seized.

  • Darius pivoted hard left, fists rising in a guard stance. A living barricade beside Dracul, muscles coiled to intercept blows.

  • Millicent dissolved—not mere stealth, but true vanish—her obsidian daggers flashing like viper fangs before disappearing entirely.

  • Ariel melted into reed-shadows, blade low. Dark flame clung to her like a second skin. Waiting. For the opportunity to strike.

Taneuma’s hooves struck water. The lake answered its master—a tsunami of liquid light surged upwards in response to the taunt.

Liquid light surged toward me—a tsunami of raw voltage roaring across the lake’s mirror surface. Guardian’s Oath flared in my grip, the rose-etched steel humming with holy energy as I planted my feet. Memories of Suterusu flashed: my sword swinging through empty air, knees sinking into mud while spectators jeered. Never again. The shield slammed down hard, carving a furrow in silt as blue rose motifs ignited. "OVER HERE, HORSIE!" Focused Howl tore from my throat—a sonic hook burying itself in Taneuma’s storm-core.

Impact.

White noise. Crushing force. Holy light flared around the shield’s edge, repelling the tide in a shower of sparks. Static clawed past the barrier, searing my forearms. Teeth gritted, I held firm. Not like before. Not weak. Across the water, Taneuma’s star-eyes narrowed to furious slits. Aggro held. Darius lunged left, intercepting stray arcs with crossed arms. "Steady, Lord Dracul!" Millicent’s silhouette flickered near reeds—dagger-hands poised. Above us all, the Mothra Key throbbed in my inventory: THOOM-THOOM. Ghost drums syncing with the beast’s hoofbeats.

The stallion reared, fresh lightning gathering in its jaws. I felt it then—oil-slick hunger coiling in the shadows. Ariel. Her strike would come. Time to make the opening wider. I raised Guardian’s Oath high, holy light refracting across the lake’s deceptive surface. "IS THAT ALL?!" The taunt echoed, sharp and bright. Taneuma’s mane crackled, ionized air whipping like angry serpents. Birches trembled. Water hissed where stray voltage struck. Millicent’s voice cut through the ozone stench—"Charge density critical!"—but I kept my eyes locked on the storm-beast. Shadows deepened in the reeds. Static lifted my hair. Every muscle screamed to dodge, but I held. Bait must stand still.

Shadows clung to Ariel like a second skin. Nihilim’s Wrath trembled in its saya—a live wire of hunger. Dark flame licked the scabbard’s rim, whispering of defences unmade. Dracul’s taunt hung in the air, holy light painting him a perfect beacon. Taneuma took the bait, lightning gathering in its maw.

She moved.

No flourish. No war cry. A single fluid motion— calculated Iaijutsu. The blade cleared the saya as shadowflame lingered. Steel met Taneuma’s crackling flank.

Silence.

For one fractured second, voltage and void warred. Then shadowflame consumed. Midnight fire boiled through the storm-hide like acid through paper, bypassing resistance. The beast’s HP bar dropped—a full third vanishing. A guttural roar shook the lake, doubling in its reflection.

Backstep. Vanish.

Ariel melted into reeds before Taneuma fully turned. Her crimson cape settled at her shoulders. The beast found only Dracul standing defiant in shallows. Rage redirected. A hoof lashed out.

Too fast.

The kick struck his shield with a CRACK. Dracul hurtled backward into the lake. Water closed over him—then detonated. Ten thousand volts ripped through his armor. He arched, damage numerals flashing but they we insignificant. Thorns on his gear flickered and died—no attacker to reflect into, only water and wrath.

Darius charged, hauling him onto silt. "Status?!"
Dracul spat lakewater, greatsword still blazing. "Alive... and annoyed."

Above, Taneuma’s wounds sizzled. Shadowflame gnawed at the edges, dark against electric white.

Waterlogged and furious, I shoved Darius aside, his grip on my arm like a shackle I couldn’t bear. "I have this," I snarled, the words tasting of lakewater and ozone. Guardian’s Oath’s holy light flared along the rose-etched blade, a beacon in the charged gloom as I charged forward, silt spraying in great gouts from my heavy boots. Taneuma’s star-eyes burned a deeper, angrier crimson—Ariel’s insidious shadowflame still visibly gnawing at its crackling flank. Perfect. Let it bleed.

With a roar that tore at my raw throat, I swung the massive greatsword in a blinding, overhead arc, the holy steel screaming through the air toward its lightning-woven neck. "JUST DIE ALREADY, YOU OVERGROWN SPARK!"
It blurred—not with teleportation’s abruptness, but with a speed that felt like contempt made manifest. My blade met nothing but empty, ionized air as voltage-seared wind whipped my face, leaving stinging welts. The stallion simply... wasn’t there. It materialized a few meters to the left, one hoof barely kissing the lake’s mirror surface. Ripples spread outward—calm, mocking circles in the chaos. Static prickled along my knuckles, raising angry red blisters.

"Too slow by half, Lord Dracul!" Millicent’s voice, sharp with analytical frustration, rang from the birch cluster. Twin obsidian daggers flew—thwip-thwip—through the space Taneuma had occupied a heartbeat before. The beast merely shimmered, an afterimage dissolving as Millicent’s blades passed harmlessly through, embedding themselves with dull thuds in distant reeds.

Frustration burned hotter than the static. I lunged again, shield held high to cover my advance, sword held low for a gutting thrust. Holy light scorched the silt where Taneuma had stood mere milliseconds before. Its shimmering reflection in the water doubled the evasion—twin spectral stallions dancing just beyond the reach of my steel. Darius’s hand clamped on my shoulder plate, yanking me sideways as a bolt of pure lightning vaporized the footprint I’d just left. "Heavy armor versus pure lightning..." he panted, his usually stoic voice strained. "...isn’t just a bad matchup, Lord Dracul. It’s suicide."

The ozone-heavy air choked me. Suterusu all over again. The memory of my blade whistling through empty air, the jeers of the crowd, the mud beneath my knees—it flooded back, sour and thick. My greatsword felt like an anvil in my hands. Yet, through the frustration, I saw it: Ariel’s shadowflame still chewed relentlessly at Taneuma’s core. Crimson damage sigils bled through its electric hide, its HP bar a dangerously thin sliver of red. One solid hit. That’s all it would take. One solid hit to end this. Gritting my teeth until my jaw ached, I slammed my shield down into the muck with a defiant CRUNCH. "KEEP THOSE STARING EYES ON ME, YOU GLORIFIED SPARKLER!" The aggro held, a tangible thread of fury binding Taneuma’s gaze to me, away from the shadows where Ariel waited. Millicent’s next volley of daggers found purchase in its flickering back only because its attention was riveted on my taunt. A necessary sacrifice. Worth every volt.

The world didn't slow. It bent around Ariel, the frantic dance of lightning and steel resolving into crystalline clarity. She saw the afterimage of Taneuma’s evasion, the precise point in space it had occupied milliseconds before Dracul’s frustrated swing. That was her canvas. Stepping forward wasn’t merely movement; it was a transition through fractured time. Nihilim’s Wrath cleared its black-lacquered saya with a whisper, not the roar of shadowflame, but the pure, chilling song of moonlight on river-polished steel. This wasn't about consuming darkness; it was the absolute, unadorned truth of the cut.

The blade moved. Horizontally. A line drawn not through air, but through the concept of resistance itself.
 « Iaijutsu: Silent Divide »

Shiiinnng—
The sound wasn't loud, but it silenced the thunder. A thread of silver light, impossibly thin, etched itself across the breadth of Taneuma’s crackling chest. Where it passed, the lake’s mirror-surface didn't ripple—it shattered. Shards of reflected sky hung suspended, jagged and beautiful, for a fractured eternity before collapsing like falling stars.
Taneuma’s enraged roar choked off mid-peal, severed as cleanly as if its vocal cords were silk. Its remaining HP bar didn't just drop; it imploded, another significant percentage vanishing in a shower of crimson fragments, leaving only a hair-thin sliver of red pulsating erratically.

The storm-stag stumbled, the furious voltage composing its form flickering like a dying fluorescent bulb, its magnificent outline momentarily threatening dissolution. Ariel landed lightly on the far side, the reeds beneath her feet barely disturbed, her crimson cape settling around her like spilled blood. Her stealth, her primary defence, was spent. She stood visible, exposed, on the open shore. Instinct screamed at her to move. Taneuma whirled, its mane lashing like electrified whips in a frenzy of pain and fury. Raw lightning gathered between its antlers—not aimed at her, but at Dracul, who stood braced, shield up, still the irresistible beacon of its wrath.

Ariel didn’t dodge toward cover. Instead, her blade rose, not intercepting the bolt itself, but aligning perfectly with a large, still-hanging shard of the shattered lake-mirror reflecting Dracul’s position. The searing bolt of energy struck the flat of her blade—and bent, refracting violently off the steel and into the suspended water-glass. Light twisted. The redirected bolt lanced sideways, vaporizing a stand of birch trees thirty feet to the left in a shower of splinters and steam.
Dracul gaped, shield still raised against an attack that never reached him. "How—?"
"Mirrors lie," Ariel stated, her voice calm but carrying clearly over the hiss of dying lightning and falling water. The truth of the lake, turned into defense.

It was unraveling before my eyes, bleeding light and fury, cracked open by Ariel’s impossible strike. The silver scar her blade had left across the lake’s reflection seemed to pulse, a wound in reality itself. My moment. The frustration, the near-misses, the electric burns—they coalesced into pure, focused rage. The greatword flared in my grasp, the blue rose motifs blazing with holy fire as I poured every ounce of strength into a final, desperate charge. "NOW! FINISH IT!" My voice ripped raw from my throat, less a command than a primal scream.

Taneuma staggered, its star-core flickering wildly, unstable. Its form spasmed, light bleeding from the grievous wound Ariel’s iaijutsu had carved. This wasn't evasion. This was vulnerability. I brought the massive greatsword down in a two-handed executioner’s swing, holy light trailing like a comet’s tail, aimed to cleave the flickering core in twain. Victory tasted like ozone and sweat.

It twitched.
Not the graceful evasion of before, but a violent, unpredictable spasm. My greatsword, slammed into the shallow water and silt with cataclysmic force, holy fire erupting upward in a geyser of steam and blinding light. Missed. Again. The force of the missed blow wrenched my shoulders, and before I could recover, feedback voltage—wild, untamed—arced up the conductive steel of my blade. The sting was less physical, more a branding iron of humiliation on my pride.

"STILL... TOO... FAST!" I snarled, spitting blood from a bitten lip, raising my shield defensively. My heavy plate felt like an anchor, dragging me down while the lightning beast danced just out of reach. Millicent, ever the opportunist, sent another flurry of obsidian daggers streaking from the birch cover. They peppered Taneuma’s spasming back. Tiny, stinging wounds adding up, chipping away at the sliver of red. Darius, seeing the opening, ducked under a wild, retaliatory kick that missed by inches, his fists a blur of orange-trimmed motion. A brutal uppercut slammed into the beast’s wounded flank. Damage numbers flared brightly—a solid, satisfying hit.

The mismatch was agonizingly clear. My holy greatsword and shield, built for weathering storms and shattering fortresses, were hopelessly outpaced by pure lightning. Yet, as long as I stood, roaring defiance, those blazing star-eyes remained locked on me. It ignored Millicent’s stinging daggers, ignored Darius’s punishing blows, ignored even Ariel, who now stood exposed but eerily calm, her blade held loosely, waiting. I was the shield. The distraction woven from pride and pain.

"STILL HERE, YOU WRETCHED THUNDERCLAP! STILL YOUR DEATH!" I bellowed, the aggro a tangible, crackling tether holding its fury. Its next lightning bolt, weaker now but still potent, shattered the renewed barrier around my shield, the impact driving me back a step but leaving me standing. Millicent landed another critical hit. Darius gouged a deep rent in its flickering leg. This was our rhythm, brutal and effective: I anchored its rage, a lightning rod in heavy steel, and they bled it dry.

Dracul’s defiant roar echoed across the shattered lake, a raw counterpoint to Taneuma’s sputtering, enraged whinnies. He was a bulwark, a storm anchor woven from pride and pain, holding the beast’s dying fury entirely upon himself.
Ariel breathed. In. The scent of ozone, steam, and scorched earth. Out. The lingering static, the tremor in the ground. Her weapon lowered smoothly to her side, its obsidian tip kissing the surface of the disturbed water, sending out tiny, perfect ripples.

This wasn't iaijutsu. This was kensho—seeing the essence. The final cut required no flourish, no cloak of shadowflame, only absolute precision meeting absolute vulnerability.
Taneuma, weakened but desperate, gathered the dregs of its storm. Lightning, less brilliant now but still lethal, crackled along its antlers, aimed point-blank at the defiant knight before it. Dracul braced, his shield shimmering with its last vestiges of protection, the blue roses dim. Millicent’s arm froze mid-throw, calculating the futile angles. Darius shouted a warning, drowned by the rising electrical whine—

Ariel moved.

It wasn't speed. It was inevitability. Time didn't bend; it ceased its flow. The blade lifted. Not swung, not thrust. Elevated. It caught the fractured sunlight, the lingering reflections dancing on the lake's broken surface, the dying storm-light—fusing it all into the steel. No shadowflame answered. No sound. Just the sword becoming a line of pure, silver finality, aimed at the flickering, unstable core laid bare by Dracul’s distraction and its own spasming weakness.

Shiii—
A vertical line. Silver. Cold. Infinite. Drawn from water to sky, intersecting Taneuma’s heart.

The storm-stag hung suspended—a magnificent, shattered sculpture of lightning and rage frozen in the moment of its dissolution. Voltage bled from its form like liquid light, pouring into the lake beneath. Its outline frayed, light dissolving into harmless static. The oppressive weight of the storm lifted abruptly. Silence rushed in, profound and absolute, swallowing the last echoes of thunder.

TANEUMA DEFEATED

Ariel sheathed her blade with a soft, definitive click. Where the magnificent, terrifying creature had stood, a final key materialized, hovering over the settling water. It was shaped from pure obsidian, resembling a thundercloud frozen mid-convulsion, a single bolt of lightning captured within its core. The *Bialas Key*. Sixth and final. Her fingers closed around it. A final, harmless static tingle ran up her arm—not pain, but acknowledgment. Finality.

Dracul slumped forward, bracing himself on his greatsword planted in the silt, his shield arm trembling visibly. "Took... your damn time," he managed, his voice hoarse but lacking its usual bite, replaced by bone-deep exhaustion.

Millicent emerged cautiously from the birches, pushing her glasses up her nose, their lenses fogged. "Six keys. The door... on Floor One. It’s ready now."
Darius, kneeling to check Dracul, simply nodded towards the teleport gate clearing visible in the distance. "She waits. Mother Nature."

Ariel closed her fist tightly around the cold obsidian key. Beyond the clearing, beyond the serene mood of Floor 22, the memory of a dark, damp cavern on Floor 1 surfaced. Six empty slots on a podium awaited. And the voice—ancient, immense, woven from the grind of tectonic plates and the sigh of roots in deep earth—echoed in her mind: “Prove you deserve my blessing.”

The true challenge wasn't lightning or storm. It was the earth itself. And it awaited.
