She had messaged Freyd to help her grab some items to prepare for Redemption, and boy howdy did he want her prepared. They were going to do a gauntlet of the lower leveled bosses. He, in not so many words pretty much said, don't worry I got this. And now; at that ass-crack of dawn - Mari was standing in the fields of the second floor. She could hear faint buzzing from nearby hives. The first boss of many. It felt like such a long time ago since Mari last fought the wasp queen. Another time, another life - almost. She did have a single Matraich stinger in her inventory, but she'd be more comfortable with a small stack of them. Mari sneezed and rubbed her arms, trying to stave off the bite of the cold morning air. At least she was doing this with someone whose company she genuinely enjoyed. The woman was not a coffee drinker, but a part of her had hoped that Freyd would bring her some - laced with his typical preference for vanilla. That'd be nice. It was tough to tell which, since the man never seemed to rest. No wonder he drank so much coffee. Or was that just another bit of theatre for the masses? Truth was he actually drank it rather rarely, often saved for fireside chats or an occasional visit with Marv in the Town of Beginnings. Those opportunities had grown sparse of late. After the shit show that had developed at Mari's home, he felt he owed it to her to repeat the ritual, maybe even make it one of their signature things. She would like that. He hoped. By the little grimaces she made, hiding behind her cup, he wasn't quite convinced she actually liked the drink, but it had become part of their bond. Things had been a little... terse lately but part of this outing was to reconcile, and to reassure both Freyd, and herself that she was still willing to do redemption. No man in her life, and in her bed, would change that determination and that resolve. If she failed it, then she'd cross that bridge when she came to it. But it was important for her to at least try. "Freyd!" Mari offered with a small smile. She did enjoy his company, and still considered him family. "It's good to see you. You look about as tired as I feel." The man had been running himself ragged, Mari assumed, and she most certainly didn't help. She gratefully accepted the mug and pressed it first to her cheek to warm herself up, then she sipped it. Mari winced slightly at the bitter taste. It was something she'd need to get used to. "Here. I brought num-nums," Mari tossed the small bun in the air a few times to cool it down. It was much hotter than she expected. "Whoa. Thanks." She quickly realized that she forgot to eat this morning. The woman woke up and rolled out of bed and pretty much dragged herself to this floor. Thankfully it wasn't too far from her home and had only taken her the better part of an hour to walk. At least, if she managed to beat redemption...she wouldn't need to walk everywhere anymore. Mari tore off a part of the bun with her teeth. "Is good." She said as she held it up to him in a sign of thanks. The woman finished it off quickly then rubbed her hands on her scarf to rid herself of the sticky feeling. "We got a lot to do, huh?" Mari mused as she watched him pull out his spyglass. She had one too; but had failed to bring it. "I ain't got much in terms of col, or anything but if you need me to reimburse you. Let me know, yeh?" Freyd wasn't entirely sure where things stood between them in the aftermath of the Lancaster debacle. Right now he didn't care, just being happy to spend time with his friend for the sake of offering her improved odds in her coming battle with Redemption. No one had ever faced the mob, to his knowledge. If anyone had ever tried, they'd certainly never returned. Whatever tensions might still linger between them, he just wanted her to be safe. "Whoa. Thanks. Is good." "My pleasure. Glad you enjoy it." His honey dun eagerly devoured, Freyd began planning their approach. "Nothing too tricky for the bunch we'll hit today. Those grindstones will help us get this done quickly. I'll go in fast and hard, stunning them or... what? Oh. OH! Err... yeah. You know what I meant." Rounding the rise to find the mega-wasp swarm busily buzzing around, it didn't take long for them to single out the queen. She watched as he downed his coffee, the hiss escaping from his lips and the way his hand twitched did not go unnoticed. "I'm not sure that's...how you relax." Mari said with a tilt of her head. Did he enjoy it that hot? She wasn't sure. "I thought you liked coffee but now I'm not entirely sure." She said with an amused snort. Things seemed a little tense between the two, not entirely in a bad sense - more in a way of they were trying to see where each other stood with each other. Which, perhaps was a testament to how they did still care. Freyd was still her family. The two walked, Mari still with mug in hand - choosing to take her time and enjoy the drink. "Yeh, I'm pretty sure I've done most of these before." She said between sips. "I know what you mean, don't worry!" And, as if on cue, the Wasp came looming over the horizon, heading straight for them. Mari glanced around and placed her coffee mug neatly nestled betwixt a tuft of grass. She'd retrieve it after. Freyd made quick work of the Wasp Queens health, and with a flash and a slash of her own weapon Mari almost knocked it right out - with only a sliver of health remaining. The woman felt a little frustrated at that. "Are you...." Mari stared down at her weapon. "I didn't even kill it? Seriously?" She turned to Freyd, "I really need to learn some of this stuff from you." The man was an absolute force to be reckoned with, she had seen it quite a few times now - the man had literally cackled once, muttering about numbers. Mari had never really bothered to learn the battle systems, and all the intricacies they held. She simply dabbled in the creation of things, and finding new tools to tinker with. But maybe she should start. Because this..was absolutely abysmal. "This is why I need to stock up on items..." She muttered. Trick is to go for the sword arts without rank. They bypass the suppression." As if to demonstrate, Freyd pivoted on the spot, planting his foot forward as his charged his blade and unleashing the art in a wide arc of blue-black energy that swept the field, smashing every bug it touched, queen included. The rest of the swarm froze, droning in suddenly stillness as their matriarch was summarily executed and half their skin reduced to shattered pixels in an instant. "See?" Snaring the mug handle with the tip of his black blade, Freyd rotated his wrist slightly, locking the two together well enough to lift and return it to Mari without spilling its contents. "I'm no Baldur, nor a Katoka, but I manage. My mega-damage days are mostly behind me. Since I started tanking the raids, I've come to appreciate the value of other approaches." Cup returned to his partners hand, the weapon returned to its sheath with a subtle, but distinct, snikt. "Two years off the field will build up a bit of rust. Consider this a refresher. Mari was very thankful she had chosen to keep her mug. It warmed her hands as they trudged through the snow. Mari didn't exactly have a lot of winter appropriate attire, ironic considering she lived on this floor. But most time she was here, was either in her home or workshop - and both were heated. So in lieu of a winter coat Mari simply had her plague treated leather jacket draped over her shoulders. "After this...remind me to try and find someone to buy me decent winter clothing." Mari said as she paused to down the last of the coffee. "I've beaten this boss too, a long time ago now though...do you do this guantlet often?" Mari asked.
