Oscar 0 Posted 6 hours ago #1 Share Posted 6 hours ago Oscar ripped himself out of his unconscious darkness. Like ripping off a band aid. It was sudden, jarring, overwhelming. The sun was too bright. The smell and taste of the salt air turned his stomach. The sound of waves, of gulls, thundered in his ears. He felt himself floating, rising and falling like a buoy as he laid outstretched upon the surface of the ocean. His head pounded, the taste of bile searing in his throat. He could recall nothing of how he got here. Not that he had the ability to make that synaptic connect in the first place. His body contradicted itself. Ached, but relaxed. Hot spikes of pain seared down his back, pinpricks of molten rods dancing down each vertebrae. Oscar tried to turn, point his feet downward in an effort to tread water. The sudden change in orientation and inner ear pressure seemed to cause his entire nervous system to revolt. Up became down. Down, left and right. He splashed in the water, twisting and turning until he finally resigned himself to merely floating. He could deduce, had he there grace of higher thought. Numbness was a double-edge sword. Oscar didn’t know how long he floated. Just that he wished that the sun would go out. Craved the mercy darkness would bring. Perhaps his head would throb less. Years had passed and he had forgotten the joys of being hung over. The dry times made him all the more sensitive to his body revolting. He felt the “contents” of his “stomach” settling in his throat. Situated just upon the cusp. But relief would not come. Only the rolling waves of nausea that wracked him as he bobbed up and down in the water. Time passed. Though Oscar could not tell the specific amount. But it was some amount, at least evidenced by the fact that his headache slowly faded, settling between his eyes and upon the base of his neck. Orientation was the next to return, then sensitivity to smell and sound. Taste would remain stuck in the mud. The final obstinate sense that would refuse to return to normal as long as it could. That was fine. He could figure out where he was. He brought his feet together, splayed his arms out to his sides. His body tilted downward, light kicks keeping him float. He looked left, then right. Land was a mere speck, miles away. Wonderful. Oscar took a breath, swearing under his breath. Nothing to do but start swimming. Were he possessed of a real body, this might have been a death sentence. The horrible heat of the sun upon the open ocean, fighting the tides the entire way, would have done him in. But as he stepped onto the beach, he was not winded. Did not break even the smallest sweat. Still, he left the waters behind him, staggering onto the warm sand and falling back into it. Oscar looked down, finding two familiar sights greeting him - though they should not have. Two round marks on his skin - one on his shoulder, the other just inches below his heart - both sunken, both wreathed in jagged circular where the skin had burned. On his back, there would be two more wounds, connected to the ones upon the front. There was a third, half hidden by the waistband of his pants, peeking out like a rising sun. One would be forgiven for thinking the trio of scars were a thematic choice, just like the straight-edged blemishes that marred his sides along the ribs, his arms up to the tricep. And he would not correct you. He found that once you’ve told someone that you’ve been shot before in real life, they look at you differently. Oscar was content to let people assume he endeavored to cultivate some persona in the game. It was better than the blended looks of pity and fear that were the alternative. :What surprised him, however, was the fact they could be seen at all. His shirt, his shoes, had gone missing entirely. Oscar had never looked this sloppy before; he made a point to look at least somewhat put together. But he was too tired, too mentally exhausted to care. Oscar tried to recall the previous evening. Some glimmer of something that would shed light onto how he wound up half naked in the middle of the ocean. As he delved into that dark nebula, he found that he could find no heading. No remaining ember to grasp, to nurture. Just a gap in his recollection, one that intensified his headache the more he tried to plunder its depths. All he remembered was taking a seat at a bar. And the familiar face he saw there. It was instinct that opened his menu. Decency that directed him to his messenger. Concern that finally sent it out. He might recover a little easier if he knew he was the only one suffering like this. Quote To @Arabelle I can’t remember shit. Are you okay?
