Mari 1 Posted August 7 #1 Share Posted August 7 (edited) Open to all Jacobs Ladder Members and Prospective Members; no post order no cares, just FEESH and GATHER The floor was perfect for this really... Warm and temperate climates with soft breezes that carried with them the scents of the ocean. Islands dotted throughout - it housed Baldurs estate, and furthermore the Jacobs Ladder guild hall. The walk up to the floor was daunting, usually taking Mari almost two days to get there, but she had a place to rest before continuing her journey. One day, one day soon...she would attempt Redemption. Ending the tirade of stairs. Once in the past, Mari would have been perfectly fine with relegating her fate to the quest - failure meant death. Now? Mari turned her left hand slightly, catching sight of a poorly made ring - made of silver with tints of red - as though a child roughly brushed the edges of it with a paintbrush. Made in haste and given to her in the most childish way. It was crazy to think he was once one of the captains of the Laughing Coffin. Now she had things to truly live and fight for. Death was no longer a possibility. If she were close to failing - she'd escape. Regroup. An angry orange crystal floated above her head; but the woman no longer held it in her heart. The line fell into the water with a slight plop and sighed, it would be nice to relax after everything. There were no goals today, no heated talks between brothers, comrades and lovers - no mobs - just peace and quiet. Hirru 0 Posted August 10 #2 Share Posted August 10 (edited) There were always players here and there on the 24th floor. Most were there excited over the water that seemed to dazzle and gleam, ready to be enjoyed. Though, the only ones that were somewhat okay to do so were those surrounding the main settlement, but only barely. Sahagin, fish folk that claimed quite a bit of the open water around the islands, were constantly encroaching upon the main settlement. If it wasn't for the players taking care of the Floor Guardian of the floor, they may have done so. Or not. There wasn't much to go on when the group rushed through the 24th floor before. Everyone was more preoccupied with the issues that cropped up from the previous floor raid, especially a certain green haired players actions. Speaking of a jade player upon the floor, he had awoken for his morning fishing and training, dressing in his casual attire of a black, sleeveless, turtleneck; brown slacks and boots to match. His red headband would cover his forehead while also keeping his hair out of his eyes. The silver moon pendant from the 23rd floor boss, that only three players in the game had, was clipped to it. Things were changing around the dojo that he lived under. A few new members having joined or rejoined the guild, and the hunter was one of them. He now belonged to a guild once more, after betraying his vice commanding oaths and leaving KoB. There was so much he still needed to do, but it was time to finally move on. He wouldn't be able to function well enough without a supporting guild, and Baldur was always there for him since the hunter revealed his secret. He was able to stay there for free, but did not take that deal; instead reasoning to fish for the guild and earn his stay. Though, it seemed that he was not the only one to be fishing these days; other than Baldur's spear fishing with his unidentified weapons to find Absolute Accuracy runes, but Hirru don't count that madness. No, he was glad to find that someone else enjoyed the profession just as much as he, or at least he thought that. He hadn't fully spoken to the individual before since they came back to the guild. Though he had seen them fishing here and there, and wanted to join them at least once. Taking the moment, he would step towards them while equipping their rod and the goddess' net. Mari 1 Posted August 10 Author #3 Share Posted August 10 (edited) Mari tilted her head to the side as...what was his name again? Hirru. Right. Hirru joined. "Mind if I join you, Mari?" "I mean...this is supposed to be for Jacobs Ladders members so-" Mari paused, then sighed. She was supposed to at least try and make an effort to reach out and connect to her fellow guild members. That was the entire point of this outing. "I'm. Not the best at being social." It was her form of an apology to the man. "I thought I'd extend the invite to all in the guild. Since fishing calms me. There's just something about it." Mari said as she turned her gaze to the waters surface. plop Her floater sunk underneath the glimmering surface and Mari gave her rod a sharp tug before reeling it back up. It took a little more effort than usual which meant - yup- out popped a chest. Mari puled a golden key from the small satchel she wore, waving it in front of Hirru. "I bought a bunch of these - I figure I'd just get what I can. Chances are, there will be nothing good but..." She popped open the chest and the key disintegrated in her hand. As expected, there wasn't anything of real value. Just things to scrap. "Worth a shot." Her speech was a little stilted, as though the woman was trying to be sociable. Mari had her reservations about staying within the guild - not due to any of its current members, but due to the ones who left. The ones she felt closest to. Baldur had described the guild as a 'family' but Mari simply did not see it as that right now. So she felt... out of place. Even in Jacob Ladders prime, she had felt out of place. "Hirru...Right?" Mari asked. "So, why Jacobs Ladder, and not Firm Anima?" POST ACTION: FISHING Practised Angler: 2 Fishing EXP per Attempt and additional +1 LD & CD to fishing attempts. Hirru 0 Posted August 11 #4 Share Posted August 11 (edited) "Alrighty then!" He would set up nearby where he wasn't too close, to allow them space. Not only for socially obvious reasons, but to keep from spooking the fish from constant action around them. Setting his net aside, he would pull some line, wind up his shot and fling the line out. With a plop, the line would be reeled slightly until he was satisfied that any bite would be either seen or felt. "It's good to get together more than just for a quest or raid." Settling into a seated position, the hunter watched as Mari pulled a chest from the water with relatively little stress. They had invested quite a bit more time and effort into their craft, unlike Hirru, whom only fished a few time in the morning. Barely enough to do anything, and barely enough to level it up. With a flash of a golden key, she had unlocked the chest and looted the rewards. If only the hunter could see what she got. He could probably have set up the merchant appraisal skills, but that was not what he was there for. Taking a moment, he would dig through his inventory as he waited and pulled our a platinum key. "I have my own, but I'd rather not use them here. Rather not waste event items on anything in the water." He had heard the word junk and trash a few times to describe equipment and items of lower tiers or items so broken that they were useless. He felt that he was like that, once upon a time.. "Because of things that I did that lead me here. Being vague, but I've been living here by Baldur's good graces. I've known the pillars back when and those that are with us now. They've all helped me in more ways than just one. Though, to really say why?" Just as he was putting the key away, a straight tug would pull his line from the rod. A quick reaction to grab the rod tightly before it pulled the line fully out and started reeling. The issue was that the thing wasn't fighting, it was just heavy. Of course it's a bloody chest. It was probably a few of Baldur's swords again too. Slowly reeling it in, the hunter would reach down to pull the chest up. Of course, opening the chest would give him exactly what he thought he would get. "More AA rejects, it seems." He would swipe away the screen that showed the rewards and threw the line back in. "Anyway, I've been holding on for some time, but I figured it wouldn't be bad to just let it happen. Join Baldur and Jacob's Ladder to continue this venture." Mari 1 Posted August 11 Author #5 Share Posted August 11 (edited) "It's good to get together more than just for a quest or raid." Mari couldn't really relate, she hadn't been on any quests for years, aside from a small skirmish with Raidou and his crew. That was....an experience. "Wouldn't know." Mari said with a small shrug as she cast out her line again, it landed in the water with a small plop. Mari turned her gaze to stare at the floater, swaying to and fro in the gentle breeze. "I was imprisoned for so long that honestly...anything that isn't in a 4 by 4 cell is good to me." Mari re-positioned herself so she could be a little more comfortable. "But yeh. It's nice." Mari turned to Hirru as he flashed her a platinum key. "Ah! Yeh. No the golden keys I have are just ordered from the merchant store. Nothing fancy like that. If I had that, I wouldn't waste it here either." This felt....odd? In a sense. Mari couldn't remember the last time she had a conversation like this. One where there wasn't any scheming. Or planning. Nothing. Just...simple communication. "You knew the pillars back when?" Mari snorted. "I was one of them too...but then everyone left. I tried to find them but failed. Dunno where they all are now." Mari waited as Hirru pulled in his own chest. The look that Hirru gave when he pulled it out caused Mari to laugh quietly to herself. Most people would be happy to fish up such a thing; not him she guessed. "Honestly, most the stuff I just sell to an appraiser. It's not so much the loot, just the experience of fishing." Mari pulled in her own chest, dumping the items out and into her inventory. She was looking for a specific item, but doubted she'd find it here. "Honestly, I'm just tryin' to find a nice trinket with fireproof. But I'm in no real rush. So in the meantime, just...yeh..." Her conversation pilfered out. Not knowing what else to say or how to continue. She couldn't exactly tell him 'oh hey I've had so many run-ins with the Laughing Coffin lately, great huh?' "Baldur is a good person. I don't think he has a mean bone in his body." That worked, right? Hirru 0 Posted August 11 #6 Share Posted August 11 (edited) "I'm an appraiser myself. Initially took fishing because I could gain more out of it than gathering, but deciphering runes and such gets old fast. Especially after pulling these bloody swords out of the water all day!" He would say as he felt something on the line for a moment. This was what he was waiting for, as he reeled the line in slowly. Letting the fish fight and struggle until it tires itself out. It may all be a game, but it was part of the game that he still felt was part of him. He couldn't hunt as he used to, so the hunt had to come in a different form. "I knew Shield personally through many different ventures and quests. Baldur from even more, long before that. Of course, I've known some of the other members too. Cro is still a menace to food everywhere. The only two I didn't fully know were you and Oikawa, though I've heard legends and such. Like your clearing of the 10th floor raid." There wasn't much more that he fully knew except for rumors and hearsay. Although she carried the mark of amber, that was no reason to accost her for things that may or may not have happened. It was a lesson he learned well back when he actively tried to hunt down those in that damned killing guild, Laughing Coffin. He had lost a couple of guild members to them and thought that any amber crystal player was one of them. It would come to pass that a chance encounter would prove him wrong. He owed Lowenthal a lot for that lesson. It was that new mindset that allowed him to accept and be accepted by Sister Teayre. He hoped that he could be accepted by Mari too. "Well, if I had known that before, I would have one for you. Though, I've melted that one down for its essence, but I'm sure I can work something together, if you need." Mari 1 Posted August 11 Author #7 Share Posted August 11 (edited) "An appraiser, huh?" That was useful to know. It'd help having people in the same guild...if Mari stayed. The woman sighed as she strengthened her hook and cast out her line again. "Alchemist. I'm...an Alchemist. Just recently cleaned out my store, but am not sure if I can be bothered going back to it." As nice as it was to have simple conversation like this, it was also incredibly hard for Mari. She was so used to having her guard up that it was hard to try and pull it down. To try and make a connection to people within her own guild a 'family' as Baldur would put it. "But if you need anything...let me know." An attempt to offer him the same kindness in return. "I think you get more out of most anything than you do gathering or fishing." Mari said honestly. She thought they were about equal but after running a few battles with both Raidou and Oscar - that wasn't the case. "You get more out of fighting, but that's all so tiring..." Her shoulders slouched. "Everything is so damn tiring. Really." As if noticing her spiraling thoughts, her hook hit something heavy with a sharp 'thunk' As Hirru mentioned how he knew all the members of the guild Mari began to reel in her chest. Pulling out another golden key to open it. Hopefully soon she'd max out the damn skill then she could start grabbing gleaming scales. She needed them. Fireproofing your home was incredibly expensive, almost triple so if you weren't able to gain your own items. "The 10th floor raid..." Mari leaned back on her hands. Placing her rod down on the ground next to her. Her eyes drifted up to the sky in thought. "Right. That's the one Zelrius got shitty at me for, like how I had the audacity to find the information before him - and when I wouldn't let him take over the meeting he cracked the shits - banned most everyone from participating then put out a hit on me. So I had to lead a small group of inexperienced players against an Orochi? That floor raid?" Despite her best efforts the vitterol was clear in her tone, the way she spat out his name. The annoyance of which she spoke. Mari had half a mind to tell the man she was glad the man was dead. But as socially inept as Mari was - she wasn't a total idiot. "I ain't no legend, Hirru." A silence fell between the two, and after several minutes Mari finally spoke again. "...I miss them." She said quietly. "Shield...Beat...Oikawa. With them gone I feel so out of place here. I'm doing my best to stay in the guild but..." Mari fell back - letting herself nestle amongst the wet grass by the lake, hands crossed over her stomach. Hirru was a near stranger. How could she tell him she killed Cro's brother and had somehow had him calling her his sister? How could she tell him anything of her past? "...How...can I stay in a guild that fights to free everyone from this place, when I don't think I'd ever leave?" Hirru 0 Posted August 13 #8 Share Posted August 13 (edited) It seemed that Hirru had struck a nerve with what he said. It seemed that the stories and legends he heard were just as he feared. Not so much with that he feared how Mari would react, but about the unruly wrath that was Zelrius. Frankly, the rumors and such did talk about his achievements, but there were so many warning signs of the guy being a 'dick'. That roughly confirmed it for him though. Hirru let the silence go on a bit too long before Mari started questioning her own reason to be in the guild. "I felt like that too. Not knowing if the reason you're doing something is right the call." The memory flashed of the twenty third floor raid. A dark elf that seemed to look no older than some of the younger players in Aincrad. Scared and confused, as the council around him were dying. The prophecy that he foretold was not going as he predicted. That sight was enough for the hunter to stop everything and try to help the floor boss. While the hunter was being literally stabbed to move him out of the way, he was able to give the boy a teleportation crystal to get him out of there. A gesture that he was nearly ostracized for, and caused quite a bit of problems on the front lines over. It took him a while to come back from that. "I still don't feel like my own reason is good enough sometimes. To think that I still fight for people that I will never know, nor will they ever see me. I question it every so often." He would test the line to see if anything had snagged while he spoke. "Though, when I feel myself going into that dark place in my own mind. I have this feeling of perseverance, but not for myself, for that someone else. Those friends that I have made, and those that do understand me. I get that feeling that if I don't fight on, then someone will be lost, and I don't want that." Hirru would straighten himself out before continuing. "In that, though. If I had none of them, I too would just leave it all behind. I did the same with my last guild, but here I am again, walking into another guild of friends that I made along the way. It's not so much that I fight for the guild. The guild is extra. It's what I'm doing that is understood, and that is keeping everyone safe as they fight on. Give their purpose a reason to continue on." He would pause for a moment as he thought about what the guild was really for. "Isn't that this guild was all about? Helping those that want to create their own future? Can't remember exactly what Baldur said, but I'm sure that even if you don't see the guild as your home. We can still support you until you find where it you wish to be." Mari 1 Posted August 13 Author #9 Share Posted August 13 (edited) "I felt like that too. Not knowing if the reason you're doing something is right the call." Mari tried to sympathize - but it was difficult. She had to make that decision so many times. The weight of those lives and choices once weighed so heavy on her shoulders to the point where she collapsed under the sheer pressure. Now? She was somewhat desensitized to it all. She wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not, but the sting of those lives no longer bothered her. Mari cast out her line, continuing to listen to Hirru, how he felt that his own reason wasn't good enough. "So?" came her curt response. "Who the hell cares what your reason is? They're yours. Right?" It annoyed her, not so much how he felt, but how this place made him feel that way in the first place. Made him feel like what he wanted, his choices - meant - weren't important compared to the bigger picture. Mari had gone through that same thing. Even Baldur had a part to play in that, as good as his intentions had been. "I think that's what should matter. It's perfectly normal to question why we throw our lives in the line of fire, and for what? Sometimes, there is no nice way to put it Hirru. It's complete bullshit." Mari felt the 'thunk' of another chest and considered herself lucky as she would reel it in. The motion was fairly practiced by now. She'd grab the chest, pry it open, and start throwing the extra items away in her inventory. Mari did all this silently, allowing the green haired man to speak. How he'd often travel to dark places in his mind, but he was fighting for someone else. Friends, who he was afraid of losing. Mari understood that at least. "Yanno..." She said with a sigh as she kicked the empty chest back into the water with a small 'splash' "A few months ago, I'd have disagreed with you." But she had someone now, someone she never expected to get so incredibly irrevocably underneath her skin the way he did. "I had lost so much I was just, I didn't think I'd feel anything but now..." She shut her eyes. How scared she had been standing before her brother, not knowing if he'd strike her through to get to Lancaster or not. Mari didn't finish her words, this was not her time to speak. It was clear the man had a lot to say, and she would not deny him his cathartic release. In a way, Mari had done the same thing as he did. Instead of leaving a guild - she had been imprisoned for two what felt like two years. Finally, when she felt like Hirru was finished Mari opened her eyes, allowing them to fall on him. "That's my problem, Hirru." It was hard for her to admit. "I've lost faith in many people. I don't know if I want to bother helping those who have spurned me, and those I love at every step. I'd die for my friends, and those precious few I consider my family, but I struggle to think I'd do the same for a near stranger." Hirru 0 Posted Saturday at 04:37 AM #10 Share Posted Saturday at 04:37 AM (edited) "I wish I could say that, but I've done worse than help strangers, at this point." He would look at the ring on his left index finger before adjusting his headband. The little crescent moon above his head would shimmer slightly. They were the items he gained from saving the "I've saved floor bosses from death. Though, I don't actually know how teleporting one out of a boss room counts, but yeah.. That happened." He would let that sink in a bit as he checked on the line. Yet another chest, it would seem. Pulling the drowning whale out of the depths of the little kiddie pool.. only for it to be one of the smallest chests he had ever seen. Opening the chest would reveal only set of rusty blades and a couple corked, but very rough looking edibles. Was that mold? He didn't want to know and threw them in the inventory, like all the rest. "Gross.. Anyway, I feel like my reason has only solidified since then. Can't really go back on myself when I've essentially committed treason, huh?" He would look at his inventory for a moment. "I really need to do some appraising some time.. To much is building up." Mari 1 Posted Saturday at 04:40 AM Author #11 Share Posted Saturday at 04:40 AM (edited) Mari watched Hirru play with his headband, and how it would ignite into a light, shimmery glow. He talked about how he helped a floor boss. Another bleeding heart? "Huh.." Mari said. She turned her attention to the lake. She was quiet for a moment before finally giving a shrug. "Yanno. I really don't give a fuck about NPCs." It was crass, but it was honest. "I'd knife them down by the dozen. I don't care how human they appear to be. They're not." The last part was spoken with a very clear and distinct bitterness. She once thought they were capable of so many things. But in the end...they didn't go past their programming. "But I mean....teleporting them out - guess that's a new way to defeat them eh?" Mari glanced sideward at Hirru. "The floors still counted as being cleared so who cares how ya got there, right? I may not care about NPCs - but many others do. I wouldn't fault them for it." Another thunk, and another chest. Mari scooped it up and utilized one of her many golden keys to open it up. She started pulling out the plethora of items, luckily for her - hers didn't contain any moldy food. "That's not treason." Mari said flatly. "That's following who you are. I'm so sick of the black and white politics of the frontliners sometimes." Mari muttered. "For what its worth....I don't consider you a traitor." "I really need to do some appraising some time.. To much is building up." "Hmm..." Mari tapped her fishing rod. "You're an appraiser right? I have a friend who is looking for some kind of madness enchantment? I haven't been able to find much information about it though. Do you know anything about it?" She was looking out for Corvo. It was the least Mari could do. She wasn't sure she was staying in the frontlines - so - why not aid someone who wanted to? "They're looking at being a frontliner...err I think. So I'm just trying to help them out." Mari snorted then laughed. "I suppose you could call me his sugar mama." Hirru 0 Posted Saturday at 05:58 AM #12 Share Posted Saturday at 05:58 AM (edited) "Thanks." He would think about throwing the line out once more, but the talks were starting to get more and more involved. Also, what was going on in that last part. "I've been told that by everyone else too, and that I shouldn't hold it against myself. To not let everyone else's opinions affect me. So, I think I can joke about it a bit here and there, but I don't think it would be a great conversation starter either." He would give a slight snicker before addressing the request that Mari would make of him. Looking at his list of runic inscriptions, he would eye ball things for a bit, but would come up with nothing. "Madness? Pretty sure that isn't a rune that I can appraise." Still thumbing through, he would remember where he saw that name from. It was from the last raid when they were struck with the 'madness' damage over time effect. He was still researching the effects on that, but didn't really want to waste the two items he had. Though, in the end, they were not that powerful against them, and he wasn't going to be able to use a weapon enhancement in the near future anyway. "I do have these floor boss drops. Replaces a slot with the madness rune. If you want that, then I'm not too caring for it. Here." He would send a trade offer to Mari, almost nonchalantly. He didn't care for the items, and only got them cause he figured one of the people he knew would want them. Instead, he had been carrying them for no reason. Better to sell, but who knows what kind of person would buy and use such a thing. Better to give it to someone he could roughly trust. "Just don't let them cause any issues with it. Madness against a player could be worse than anything else out there. Except Paralysis, fuck paralysis." Giving Mari 2x Maddening Hex [239351a, 239351b]: (Unique Material); Removes an enhancement on a weapon and replaces it with [Madness]. (This cannot override the Madness enhancement cap. Consumed on use.) As she flung her rod out into the water, almost immediately the float dunked beneath the water. She pulled out another chest, "Oh shit..." Mari glanced at her skill. "I just maxed my fishing skill" She didn't realize she had been fishing that much lately, but it must have been enough. She wouldn't complain. Mari started pulling out the items. Listening to Hirru continue. "Really? You're just...giving them to me for free?" He would shrug in return. "Just don't let them cause any issues with it. Madness against a player could be worse than anything else out there. Except Paralysis, fuck paralysis." "Yeh..." Mari said quietly. "I don't think this person would be causing any trouble like that." Several people did come to mind though, that would abuse the absolute shit out of the enchantment, but Corvo was not one of them. "Thanks." Mari said quietly as she pocketed the vials. "Yanno.... This has been really nice." Mari said as she put her rod away and dusted off her hands. "They're going to someone who is working toward making it into the frontlines. So I'll keep them in check." Mari rubbed the back of her neck. Trying to figure out what else to say. She didn't expect anyone from the guild to show up....so it was really nice that he had. They both managed to talk to each other - and it made Mari feel a little better about things. "You...really helped me today, so thanks."
