Mari 1 Posted August 13 #1 Share Posted August 13 (edited) Quote Mari: If you’re free - I’m just outside of Taft Mari: I know you’ve read this. Mari: Come, don’t. I don’t care. You’ll miss out though. Mari sat cross legged on a small boulder; not too far from the path into the main settlement - normally she’d do her best to keep out of sight from passerby, but she was waiting for Corvo and needed to be in a more obvious area, lest he walk past. Not that Mari thought Corvo would be the kind of person to do that… actually…he would be the person to do that. Just to spite her, considering their last proper conversation before her incarceration. So much for trying to keep in contact. At least she saw him at the crab boil. Not that Mari had the time to be able to really talk with him all that much there. Still..it was nice to see him there. She didn't actually expect him to show up. Mari guessed the allure of bikini's really did make him show. Mari had to admit...she missed him. He was crass - rude - and selfish, but those were things she kind of admired in a way. Hell, she was engaged to someone who shared similar traits. Mari sported her usual attire… orange crop top, black short shorts - and fishnets that never seemed to rip. Upon her messy haired head sat a king's crown made of gold and embedded with jewels - lopsided, as it slanted down one side. Far too big for her head. The items were all aesthetic, useless. Junk. Not many people would want to go around wearing an actual crown. And if they did, Mari would probably think they were an idiot. Around her sat a few opened chests, each small chest looked as though it had been pulled from the dankest depths below. Covered in grime and barnacles, gilded edges faded and rotted, some splitting at the sides. The woman was looking for something in particular. So far, she only had the one. A single bottle of fine wine; its label faded - she didn't know what it was. Beyond that it was 'red' but she was hoping Lancaster would like it. She wanted to find a few more, and the rest of the stuff she had managed to pull from the chests? Trash. Useless. Especially with the new skill she had picked up from Oscar - Mari snorted. Remembering the look he gave her, and the way he winked when she had to eat the hotdog to gain the skill...Squabble Up. Corvo 0 Posted August 16 #2 Share Posted August 16 "The fuck was that." The party had been a trainwreck for Corvo, and he'd hated the idea of going to begin with. Between the uncouth woman who lacked any basis of decorum and the railroading he got for chewing her out, his mood had stayed foul for the remainder of the function. Being talked down to always made him feel nasty, and as much as he wanted to pop Oscar in the jaw, he severely doubted that would have gone over well. And he had crashed the dude's party, so he would have been out of line anyway. "Fuck that guy," he muttered, albeit without any real hate burning behind the words. He went there to talk to Mari, and that hadn't exactly played out in a way that matched his idyllic scenario. She reached out again though. That was a good decision on her part. When he showed up at the meeting spot, he snapped his fingers at her. "You ghost me right after talking about not being strangers- even if there's a good reason- then you invite me to that fuckfest." Corvo snorted indignantly. "That your idea of a practical joke? Did you set up the handsy bitch just to fuck with me?" He wasn't thrilled. Still, he wanted to leave the floor open for her to explain herself, and not just for her to sit and endure another crashout sesh. "Still, you reached out. That's moe than some people, so I'll let it slide. This time." Mari 1 Posted August 16 Author #3 Share Posted August 16 (edited) "Well, hello to you too." Mari said plainly. She stood, carefully placing the bottle of wine down on the large rock before dusting off the extra col from her lap. She should have expected as much from him. The shouting, the clicking of his fingers at her - as much as it annoyed her, she missed it. "It would have been hard to message you, considering I was in fucking prison for two years. Two years. No sun, no communication, nothign but stale rations and falling asleep to the sound of screaming people and mobs alike, so yeh. My fuckin' bad. That I didn't reach out." Mari had to take a breath, no...don't start this. Don't get too mad at him. Her voice lowered. "If I had a way, maybe I would have." A tilt of her head as a smirk grew on her lips. "A congical visit from you would have helped ease the absolute fucking boredom of that place." Not that Corvo would ever have known that she was in prison. Mari shook her head slightly, so no - no she wouldn't get mad. It wouldn't be fair to get angry at him. Hell, the entire reason she had invited him out here today was to try and make it up to him, considering how the party went down. Mari gestured to the 10,000 col and other items around her on the floor. "This." she gestured. "Is yours if you want it, by the way." Mari took the crown off her head as she approached him, ignoring the fact that he snapped his fucking fingers at her. Mari placed the crown on top of his head then took a step back. "Me reaching out to you today is to make up for the party. Ceres is a weird woman, I don't think she's all there in the head - Oscar may be a friend but I don't think you deserved to be cussed out like that." A jab of her thumb over her shoulder. "Think of that as a down payment, for an apology. You know I suck at those." "That your idea of a practical joke? Did you set up the handsy bitch just to fuck with me?" Really? "You think I'd do something like that? Really? If I'm gonna fuck with you Corvo, it'd be in different ways. You're one of the few people I tolerate here." Mari pulled out a cigarette from her inventory, and with a snap of her thumb against her forefinger a flame lit up on her index - Mari placed the cigarette in her mouth and lit it before taking it out and placing it between Corvo's lips. "That, is how I'd mess with you. Now calm yer tits. I messaged you because I missed ya. and we never really got a chance to catch up at the bikini beach fest." Corvo 0 Posted August 17 #4 Share Posted August 17 "Yeah? Prison, huh?" he drawled, nostrils flaring as his face contorted with a mix of disgust and disapproval. "Can't imagine what that's like." He gestured vaguely toward the whole of Aincrad around them, a faint reminder that they were all imprisoned. "Doubling down, were ya? Didn't really feel the vibe, needed some redundancy?" At the mention of a conjugal visit, he bristled a bit. After everything, she wanted to use the prospect of a sexual encounter to lighten the mood? Well, that d20 roll turned up a 1. Corvo shook his head, inhaled deeply through his nose, and snorted. This is yours if you want it, by the way. Okay, so she burned an inspiration point and the dice gave her a break this time. Corvo glanced down at the literal jackpot and poker faced the redhead. He liked the sound of a down payment. She had figured out how the transaction system worked and stoked the flames of Greed that drove the erstwhile violence aficionado. You think I'd do something like that? Really? "Gonna level with ya sugartits, I thought I knew people I met in real life better than I actually did, I'm not gonna pretend to know what you're capable of or what motivates you." He watched absently as she lit up a cigarette, inhaled the sweet poison, then invaded his personal space to shove betwixt his teeth. Now, unlike the other woman who'd done it at the party, Mari didn't linger, and she had sweetened the deal with one of his favorite vices. Even if he was initially annoyed, it didn't show as he reached up, deftly caught the cig between two fingers, took a drag, then let his arm hang to one side. "Yeah? Pardon me if I don't leap for joy at the idea of anyone telling me they missed me," he let the smoke roll off the roof of his mouth, tongue playing with it as it went. The burning sensation, the flavor... it was hard to beat the Cardinal System's 1 to 1 facsimile. "Not to cheapen the sentiment or anything. Just, y'know, not seeing anyone you know or care about for several years does wonders for a body. Sounds like you of all people got the memo on that one." He stared at the sky blankly as his throat ran out of fuel, lifting his arm in a daze to take another hit. "Figure I don't really know what you were doing time for, and I don't really care. I'm not here to chaperone for you or judge you, so you can skip that whole spiel. For what it's worth, I appreciate the effort to reach out- and that's the only fuckin' time I'm saying it, so drink it in."
Mari 1 Posted August 17 Author #5 Share Posted August 17 "Doubling down, were ya? Didn't really feel the vibe, needed some redundancy?" Mari ignored the barbed words as she opened up her inventory, pulling out a hellstorm potion, and a bottle of Sullivans Cove whiskey, half empty. Her go to drink for when she needed to calm down, and right now she was doing her very best to keep calm. He was back to calling her sugar tits- if that meant he was tolerating her now or not, Mari didn't know. "Can't imagine someone like you is used to anyone saying they missed you." She said simply, just not being able to resist the barbed words. They were accentuated with a thrust of the drink into his hands. If he took it or not Mari didn't care. The entire point of her trawling through old chests from the 29th floor was to find more. Mari turned her back to Corvo and picked up the old wine, sans label and put it away. Sounds like you of all people got the memo on that one. Wow, he really had to hit the nail on the head there, didn't he? Mari did have a couple people say they missed her when she got out of prison, but sometimes it felt hollow. Empty. That's probably how he felt toward her words now. Not that Mari would try to assume or diagnose anything with the man. He was always a 'what you see is what you get' kind person to her. He said what was on his mind, so even if he shouted at her with annoyed words Mari brushed them off. He had a right to be "True. However you react doesn't cheapen shit." Mari said as she turned to face him again, her eyes glancing up at the crown she placed on his head, somehow it suited him. "Couldn't help but notice you didn't have a lot on you. Ya broke?" Mari paused to take a drink of the potion, she threw the empty vial against the rock and it shattered. Figure I don't really know what you were doing time for, and I don't really care- "Good. This is why I like you. I don't want to answer questions, you don't wanna ask them. I'll drink in that appreciation, take a picture and hang it above the wall on my mantle, all pretty and homey like." Mari would pull another cigarette from her inventory, light it up, and instead of smoking it, she kept it in her hands. Comfort. "I'm here to make an offer - you need some cash? weapons? Lets say I'm in a giving mood."
Corvo 0 Posted August 17 #6 Share Posted August 17 Can't imagine someone like you is used to anyone saying they missed you. "Ain't wrong about that," he shrugged, taking yet another hit. He was going through that cigarette like a runner guzzling down water during a marathon. "But we already established I'm a lonely fuck, you don't get any points for creativity." Her words were scathing, but Corvo hardly seemed offended. There was nothing at this point that could make him feel bad about not having any friends, or failing to make an attempt to bond with anyone. Other people were a liability here. Feelings blurred things, the possibility of coping with death and fractured psyche held no appeal. Sometimes this game makes me wonder if I'm actually a sociopath. Couldn't help but notice you didn't have a lot on you. Ya broke? "I haven't spent near as much time as I'd like to getting stronger or stocking up," he admitted readily. What he failed to mention was how he had spent all of that time, the depressive spiral, the anxiety attacks, wallowing in self-pity, drowning in a self-feeding victim mentality that only broke when he had finally had enough of letting this shitty Castle win. The only real issue with that was how far behind that put him. And he wasn't exactly the type to ask for hand outs. But here she was, offering. That changed things. "What's the catch?" he asked, not bothering to hide his skepticism. Surely someone like Mari had an ulterior motive for being so forthcoming with kindness. She wasn't quite the same as he was, granted- not completely jaded on humanity at a glance- but she was close enough to sick-of-everyone's-shit that he had to assume philanthropy wasn't in her wheelhouse. Mari 1 Posted August 17 Author #7 Share Posted August 17 (edited) "What's the catch?" "You have to spend time with me." Came Mari's simple reply. It's all she wanted really. Mari would shove her lit cigarette behind her ear, the smoke slowly circling above her as she bent down to snatch the col up from the floor - and with a few flicks of her finger on her HUD - the amount sat firmly in Corvo's coffers. "There's not really any catch. I'm...." Mari sighed as she shifted her eyes away from him. How to put it? Surely he didn't need to hear the whole story. "I'm a little...sick of everythin' to do with the frontlines. The politics, the constant need for everyone to be positive. The amount of times someones tried to cleave my head from my shoulders...It'd be nice to spend time with someone who just speaks his mind, no filters." She trailed off, crossing her arms over her chest. Eyes downcast. There was so much more to say. She was sick of being used. Sick of everyone expecting the world from her - how her only salvation was to forget her own desires and live for everybody else. Instead of heaving all that on him Mari chose to stick with some form of brevity. "Time in prison has made me a selfish person Corvo. Maybe I'm just trying to find someone to replace me so I feel less guilty when I leave the front-line train wreck. Maybe its just cause I like you, and its an excuse to spend time with you. Maybe I'm an absolute psychopath and this is an elaborate scheme to get you closer to me so I can kill you " She would pause as four antmen, who had wandered a little too far from their nest came into view. Mari held a finger up to Corvo - then pointed at the creatures. She pulled out her weapon, and with a single horizontal strike, they were all cleaved in half, a wave of deep red blood sprayed against her back but that didn't bother her - each one had exploded into piles of col - 4 times that of what she had just given him. Mari's cerulean gaze never once left Corvo. "So, I guess I can be your sugar mama, or some shit like that, give some truth to your lil nickname for me. Or you can turn and leave. I can't say I won't be disappointed if you do. But I won't go chasing you down. I'm done dealing with people who don't want my company. Transactional or otherwise. So?" A tilt of her head as she gestured to the col around her. "You in Corvo?" Corvo 0 Posted August 18 #8 Share Posted August 18 (edited) He watched quietly, neutrality writ upon his face. Those violent eyes followed her as she moved, and he registered the somberness of her words even as she painted them lively for him. To her credit, the things she was saying were... hard to embellish in a positive light. Yeah, I get it. They're all doing it, and you're buyin' in because its the status quo. You don't have to tell me twice. "Sounds like a fuckin' bunch of winners," he sneered. What was he to expect, though? A bunch of NEET losers and Hikkikomori who probably forgot to bathe for weeks on end playing Armchair General and lording over people's lives was about the bar when it came to MMORPGs. When he was able to log out at will, he kept his distance from that kind of freak because they soured the overall experience. Seemed like Mari had learned all about the Neckbeard menace. "Yeah, yeah," he held up a hand to stop her, "you don't have to sell it that hard. Fuck 'em. Hard to find good people in a place good folks tend to avoid. My dad used to tell me that. 'You're known by the company you keep,' shit like that. Obviously I was the type of kid who had to learn from experience and not the wisdom of others." Much to the Orange Player's benefit, at that. Maybe I'm just trying to find someone to replace me so I feel less guilty when I leave the front-line train wreck. "Wow, you really do hate those fucks if you're petty enough to sic me on them." Maybe its just cause I like you, and its an excuse to spend time with you. "You don't have to lie that hard. I was already mostly sold." Maybe I'm an absolute psychopath and this is an elaborate scheme to get you closer to me so I can kill you. "I had a good run, I guess." Corvo shrugged. "Just do me a favor and top me off first, I'd hate to go out without a bang." He took a last hit from the cigarette, already reduced near to ash, then frowned. "Jokes aside, it ain't about whether or not I trust you. If it was, I wouldn't have showed up for this, or for the party. I'm bored. I'm angry. I'm tired of not being able to do anything about it." You in Corvo? "I ain't about to say no to a fairy godmother right now." Corvo tossed aside the last vestiges of cigarette and, bringing his corn cobb pipe from where it hid in his sleeve and lighting up some of the stankest herb Mari would've ever encountered. The things you find when you spend all your time alone in the markets, huh? When he ignited it, the haze that wafted off it burned his eyes to the point where they screwed shut. When he inhaled, the glorious poison circulated through him, igniting his nerves like wildfire. He shuddered, held the hit for what seemed like a lifetime, and exhaled with wide, bright eyes. "Fffffffuck me, that's good." Spinning the pipe between index and middle fingers, Corvo snatched it up by the bowl and pointed the neck toward Mari. "I'll sign your contract, Beelzebub." Corvo readily accepts Mari's gifts. Edited August 18 by Corvo
Mari 1 Posted August 18 Author #9 Share Posted August 18 (edited) Mari snorted. Right. Brevity. She had to remember Brevity. Mari opened her HUD and in a quick flourish the spoils that surrounded her were scooped up into her possession, and with another - half of them immediately transferred to Corvos. Even if he had denied her, she'd still give it to him. He'd comment about they all sounded like a bunch of winners, Mari smirked. Yeh, it did seem that way. Not all of them were bad - individually they were all probably good people - but as a collective Mari found it suffocating. She wasn't sure how long she'd stay fighting on the frontlines - or if she'd take a break or not yet. "Right, right." Mari would say, waving off the comment with her hand. Hard to find good people in a place good folks tend to avoid." Huh. Somehow...Mari never really thought of it that way. She just always equated half the people in here to isolated gaming nerds. She hadn't really dabbled a lot with games in the past. Which is probably why she found the mechanics and nitty gritty meta of some of the players difficult to digest. She'd much rather tinker away with what she wanted, in her own way. Mari didn't comment on his dad, she had no right nor reason to. "The company you keep, eh?" Mari asked with a tilt of her head. "So - does that make me an asshole?" She'd shrug her shoulders. "Good thing I like assholes, most the time they're honest at least." With a gesture as if to say 'follow me' Mari began to walk toward the ants nest - she'd need to fight many more of these bastards if either one of them were to get a decent spoil today. Mari would laugh as Corvo mentioned sic'ing him on them. "To be honest, I barely know a lot of them these days. And -" She turned to glance at him from over her shoulder. "You don't have to lie that hard. I was already mostly sold." "It's not a lie yanno." Mari wanted to elaborate further, she'd not have invited him out again, not be willing to share so much with him if she didn't like him. Mari wasn't as he put it, a philanthropist. Despite what people thought of her, she wasn't kind, helpful, maybe - but not kind. But another wave of ants scurried forth - 'Tch' Mari clicked her tongue in annoyance as she turned to face them, flipping her weapon around and twisting her foot to steady her stance - one quick vertical slash was all it took to fell the ants. Her strength heightened. Stats boosted, something about numbers go brr. "Now..." Mari said, as she turned to approach Corvo. She'd pull another few cigarettes from her inventory and place them into his open palm. As he put it, topping him off. "You wanna do something about it?" Mari asked. "Aight." Mari watched as Corvo pulled out a pipe, her face scrunching as a rather unpleasant smell wafted from it. The smoke burned her eyes and Mari had to wave her hand in front of her face to dispel it from watering eyes. Corvo, the absolute madman that he was willingly inhaled the noxious fumes, holding for some time before exhaling with a hiss of pleasure. It was good? Ain't no way. "I'll sign your contract, Beelzebub." Good. It'd be nice to have some decent company again. "C'mon then, come be my cheerleader whilst I make you a rich man." Mari would say as she grabbed his extended offer of the pipe. Mari rarely smoked - but she wouldn't deny an offer from someone who gave so little. Mari drew it to her lips and inhaled. It fucking burned. Mari quickly shoved the piped back toward Corvo, covering her mouth with one hand as she struggled to hold it in. Her entire body felt like she had just been tazed. Her heart rate accelerated, blood pumping hard and fast through her small frame. Her lungs begged for release and she finally exhalled - coughing. "The...The fuck..." She breathed as she beat her chest. Mari made a mental note to get Corvo better smokes. Then again, that did not taste like regular smoke. "Yer insane." Mari wheezed as she straightened herself, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. Corvo 0 Posted August 19 #10 Share Posted August 19 So - does that make me an asshole? "Dunno," he gave half of a shrug. "That's what they call me, so- maybe?" Good thing I like assholes. most the time they're honest at least. "Me too. They don't taste great, but- yeah, they don't tell many lies, either." He'd taken mostly to watching her movements, the way her Sword Arts savagely ripped apart the mobs without much effort. She had spent a considerable amount of time honing these abilities, and he'd only seen what a few people could do in passing. Until now, he hadn't had an opportunity to really gauge what an actual Frontliner was capable of with any real credibility. Now, one of them was practically handing him funding, and offering to help him get to snuff. Corvo leaned forward, taking a knee to really indulge in the show being put on before him. One arm draped over his thigh, the red-eyed man licked his chops. With a show like this one, he was definitely confident in what he could eventually achieve. Oh yeah. He could get much, much stronger. It's not a lie yanno. "Mmhmm." Truth, lies- whatever. At this point, Corvo was already invested, and she didn't have to convince him about how she actually felt or didn't feel. He had lost interest in the specifics. She had the right of it, brevity was important when dealing with an exposed nerve like this man. He was impulsive, the opposite in every way to a cautious, thoughtful man who reserved himself. Everything he'd decided he wouldn't be in Aincrad. If he was going to live life in a simulation, he would divorce himself from the monotony of the life he'd left behind. At least this way, he could actually chase the things he couldn't have on the outside. The things he'd never be. And the game couldn't take that from him. It'd never take anything else from him. He'd take from Aincrad instead. C'mon then, come be my cheerleader whilst I make you a rich man. "That's right, be my ENRON, baby," he grinned as she took the pipe and followed him down the path of mutually assured destruction. Yer insane. "We all go down in the end." Mari 1 Posted August 19 Author #11 Share Posted August 19 (edited) Mari coughed again to clear her throat then grabbed the bottle of whiskey which had been discarded by Corvos feet, taking a long swig of it she'd swish the liquids around her mouth before swallowing, trying to rid herself of the acrid taste. "What...exactly was that?" Mari asked as she set the bottle of whiskey beside his seated form. She thought it was just cheap tabacco but the way she felt her heart pound hard and heavy against her chest suggested something else. Me too. They don't taste great, but- yeah, they don't tell many lies, either." "Dunno." Mari said as she shifted away from him, another wave of ants on its way. "Never really tasted the back end of someone before." And she hadn't planned to. The next wave approached - they were a little too spread out for her to use her AOE - so using her teeth Mari pulled on the garrote she kept wrapped up in her leather glove - using her teeth. Then with a flick of her wrist she flung it toward the ants. The small weighted tip quickly wrapped around them all and with a jerk of her wrist clumped them together. Another flash of her weapon and a quick arc of her blade sent the heads of each ant guard flying. With a snap of her wrist the wire flung back into its home. Mari hissed as the recoil jerked her hand. "Fuck..." She still needed to look into fixing that. Rolling her wrist around she turned back to Corvo. He seemed more relaxed now at least. Mari wished she could say the same, her skin prickled, and it was like she could her her heart in her ears. "Enjoying the show?" Mari asked with a wry grin, flicking him another half of her spoils. "So. Corvo...What kind of weapon you using?" She asked with her HUD still open.
