[PP-PT-F01] The Cool Off Period | <<The First Lessons>>

<<Quest Details>>

Fresh off the recent raid on Floor 29, Wulfrin was in desperate need of a relaxing fishing trip. Early in the morning, Wulfrin set off from his home on Floor 22 down to his humble beginings on Floor 1. As he stepped off the teleport gate, he took in a deep breath, absorbing the fresh air. Aincrad's floor variety was something that still amazed him even after all this time. One moment you could be fighting for your life against eldritch horrors and the next you could be strolling the streets of the largest settlement in the game. He wore no armor as he had opted to drop the guise of a popular frontliner for the simple life of just a normal guy. With a sigh he slipped into his familiar seat at the cafe not far from the central plaza. As with any of his other trips, he would survey this main thoroughfare hoping to spot Dorian up to his usual antics. For now though all seemed quiet.

To: @Astra
From: Wulfrin
Subj: Day of rest

If you want to hang out for a bit, I'm headed out fishing on Floor 1. Might have a new player or two tag along if Dorian gets up to his usual tricks, but time will tell. I'm at the cafe not far from the gate if you wanna tag along.

'Deep breaths,' that was how she convinced herself to get through town. Avoid eye contact, keep out of the way, and under no circumstances do anything to draw attention to yourself. Her thoughts rampaged one after another. Vanta was a new player with no advantage aside from irl skill. Not that it would prove useful, but she felt she had to weigh it in as a possible aid just to feel better about the doomnof her situation. She wandered the town of beginnings, mentally mapping the most efficient routes, shops that cost less coin, how many NPCs resided on the floor, and above all, how many players had stayed stuck here apart from herself. She took note of each passerby on her brisk walk. Noting which seemed like potential help, those that posed no threat, and those that did. She always had an additional sense about her, something that drew her attention to the strongest opponent nearby, whether friend or foe. She stopped abruptly in her tracks. She'd forgotten to map the last few miles due to her wandering thoughts. She opened her map and saw a nearby lake. She had always liked water, the way it twinkled under light, the sounds of the waves, it all seemed calming to her. She sighed, "I suppose it couldn't hurt," she breathed out slightly annoyed. She wasn't always spontaneous, but losing track of where she had been called for a reroute. A pit stop wouldn't hurt, not when it could prove useful. Vanta spent a few moments staring out at the lake. It was beautiful. She scowled, 'here i am waisting time,' she scolded herself. She turned and found her way back to town. Adopting the same habits as before. Look down, keep quiet, stay out of the way. She passed shops, homes, vendors, taverns, and lastly came upon a small Cafe. The scent was tempting. The door swang open, a girl emerged tripping in her path, the glasses she held began to plummet. Vanta steadied the girl and caught the glasses, one in hand, the other on the top of her boot. Earning herself a wide eyed damsel and the attention of many bystanders. Her expression hardened. Something was off, she stole a glance around, she met the gaze of a man sitting at one of the Cafe tables. He was different than the other players. That was enough for her to disappear. She nodded to the girls thanks, handed her the glasses, and took off down the side alley. 'Whats he doing down here?' She thought to herself.

Recently Astra's life had been a bit hectic, considering that he'd been undergoing intense training to level up and acquire skills, participated in raid-wide events on Floor 29, and continuously found new ways to acquire scrapes and bruises. All that to say, a day of rest never hurt. The real problem Astra faced was how he would occupy his day of rest, which was something he often struggled with when he wasn't in motion. Perhaps it was ADHD, perhaps he felt as though he couldn't ever really rest, but besides eating a metric ton of food and doing some reading, he had nothing. That was, until, a notification came in from his mentor and good friend Wulfrin.

Hang out? Fishing trip? Sounds good to me!

Subj: Day of Rest

Count me in, you bring the snacks!

It didn't take too long for him to get himself ready to return to Floor 1. Typical morningtime routines: Breakfast, brush teeth, get dressed, second breakfast, out the door. Within no time, the white haired young man found himself back in the Town of Beginnings, one of the epicenters of Aincrad. Astra casually strolled through the bustling streets, making his way to the same cafe that had him meet Wulfrin for the first time. When Wulfrin came into sight, Astra offered a smile and a wave, and approached the table - taking a seat himself.

"Morning! Thanks for the invite, I could use a relaxing fishing day. Usual spot?"

As Astra began to talk to his master, he heard a small clang of sorts over near the entrance to the cafe. He noticed a player with strikingly dark black hair holding another player, perhaps they collided. Not too long after the save, the raven-haired player seemed to get alarmed and take off down a nearby alley.

D-did something startle her? Why would she run?

"Did you see that? Should we do something about that?" As Astra asked the question, he was already fidgeting to get out of his chair.

"That would be my plan yes," Wulfrin affirmed Astra's question about what location they would be fishing at. "Been watching the plaza for Dorian to make his usual appearance, but so far no sign of him."

Wulfrin took another sip of his morning tea as a blur of movement caught his eyes. A player was steadying the poor NPC server gal that regularly tripped and spilt her tray of drinks. Wulfrin had all the routines down mentally as if the Town of Beginnings was his own personal Groundhog Day, so anything out of the norm tended to catch his gaze. Wulfrin's gaze befell the player as they froze in their tracks. He wasn't trying to be menacing, but it would remiss of him not to admit that he tended to have a bit of a more rough exterior. The player quickly pivoted around and left the scene in quite the rush.

"Possibly," Wulfrin responded to Astra's query, sipping back the last of his tea. "Gladis's morning trip was thrown off and unfortunately her code won't allow her to say thank you. Least we could do is track the player down and thank them on her behalf."

Wulfrin's eyes flashed an emerald green as his Tracking skill activated causing a glowing trail of footprints to appear. Wulfrin stood up and placed a small stack of col on the table to cover his tab and gestured for Astra to follow him. The two followed the path so neatly laid out by the Tracking skill to a nearby alley. The two turned the corner just in time to witness Dorian emerge from the oddest of places.

"Hello madam," The fabulously dressed mayor of Tolbana announced himself as he leapt out from behind a large dumpster to intercept the fleeing player. "Pardon my intrusion, but I require a bit of assistance and you do seem quite capable." Dorian struggled to adjust his monocle. "My name is Dorian, mayor of Tolbana, the settlement not far from here."

Wulfrin pinched the bridge of his nose in as his head hung low. "As I feared," he sighed. "Dorian found him another one."

The alley she had chosen had been a poor choice, it was long and eerie, perfect for NPCs to pop up and ask her for help. If she just made it a little further, she could take to the rooftops. She heard a rustle, before a man emerged cutting off her path. She cursed under her breath.

"You there! Stop, please!" He was so bubbly, a trait she could hardly stand in NPCs. She glared at the hologram, noting his fine apparel, he continued. "Pardon me, but I am in need of some assistance, and you appear quite capable." She shifted, putting her back to the wall, her eyes landing on his. He heaves a quick sigh, adjusting the monocle over his right eye. "My name is Dorian, and I am the mayor of this town. As part of those mayoral duties, I issued a small loan to a member of the community a few months ago. Well, the time to collect had come around and I-" Flustered, Dorian systematically runs his fingers over his perfect moustache. She folded her arms, could he drag this out any longer? She needed to get away before she was followed.

"You see, I've forgotten who it was I loaned the money to. Terribly embarrassing, I know, but I am a very busy man, and I cannot keep track of everything that happens. I'm sure you understand." With a wave of his hand, Dorian continues, "Should you be willing to track down the loan recipient for me, and collect the col, I would be eternally grateful. Just, maybe don't let anyone else know I forgot who the loan went to?" He looked to Vanta expectantly. She glanced noticing movement, the two she had planned to avoid peeked back at her from the alleys head, her expression hardened. GreatShe turned back to flamboyant Dorian and sighed closing her eyes for a moment as if making a silent prayer for a lost one. A heavy sigh escaped her lips as her piercing gaze met Dorian.  "Sure whatever you want." she replied begrudgingly.

He nodded in approval, "Excellent, I knew I could count on you! You might start with Zackariah, the alchemist. He's often doing projects for the town, so it may have been him that borrowed the money."

At last the NPC left her, she weighed her options, engage, or tempt. She hadn't missed the slight green glow of his eye, they were tracking her. It was clear the two intended on some level of interaction. She turned and kept forward. They'll follow me anyways, might as well make use of the time. She carried on down the alley, there was a quest in her hands. Talk to Zachariah. In the mean time, avoid getting jumped by higher ranked players. She glanced back at the pair, they'd kept a healthy distance thus far, but the tail still kept her on edge. What would she do if they were here to pick off what she had? Not that it was much, but it was ALL that she had. It happened too often. Higher ranked bullies coming down from the other floors to steal new player loot. She had been able to avoid it so far, but she wasn't sure how much longer she could stay unnoticed. She had spent plenty of time in other towns. Unfortunately people took notice of her wherever she went. Is it the hair? She shook her head slightly, brushing off the thought. The longer she spent in one place the easier it was for people to start talking, and when the whispers begin, she vanishes. This town had stayed ignorant of her presence until about an hour ago. She had realized too late that the girl herself was an NPC and by catching her she had disrupted the natural flow of the game; throwing aside her current record of 'invisible' to the gutter. She was utterly annoyed at herself for the slip. There was only a town or two left before she was clean out of options. Her gait remained steady, the shadows persistent, her mood dangerous, and the path painfully long.
