Scents of the Wild: Leeching Nightmare

Crisp autumn air filled her lungs as Nari settled onto the balcony of the house she now called home. Once, it had been nothing more than a place to rest and sleep. To store the valuables that had come to be her possessions within this world. Now, though, it was home. It was a place to find comfort, friendship and family – as much as one could, in a digital experience.

The morning air flowed from her lips, crystallising slightly as the cold touched it – cold that wasn’t quite to the bone, but fresh enough to awaken her fully from the rest she’d left behind. She could still hear the ringing in her mind – an echo from the day before, her time in the smithery once more compelling her to action and excitement. She’d spent the evening looking through her quests, seeing what had been completed and what still stood out. The choice had been difficult; a number of new items had appeared, and although her newly returned excitement pulled her in different directions, she found herself resisting the urge. There were previous creations that needed completion, and she knew that it would be best to focus on those, before pressing ahead.

’I hear Scents of the Wilds is important.’ Onora had been the deciding factor, pushing Nari’s attention towards the sole questline that many claimed was the epitome of requirement for frontline work. She’d managed thus far without it, but common sense told her that was luck more than any actual reality. Agreement had come shortly thereafter, and Nari had settled in for the night, determined to start the quest the following morning – a fresh start, on a fresh start.

’Ready, Mio?’ She glanced down at the nine-tailed kitsune beside her, the small fox-face looking back up at her expectantly, but without any reaction. She’d come to be quite close with the being, and though it made no signs or movements, a piece of her thought she knew what it was thinking. A quick goodbye to her housemate, and Nari headed down the pathway and towards the main court of Floor Twenty-Seven, a small skip in her step that hadn’t been there for some time yet.

Floor Twenty-Seven’s teleporter was the complete opposite of Floor Ten’s; busy, filled with individuals preparing to head to their respective hunting grounds or tasks for the day. Voices clattered on the air, not quite overpowering and yet noticeable as one approached. Where Nari stepped off the platform, however, was a stark reminder of the ghost town atmosphere that the tenth contained. Little moved, and what did appeared almost eerie in nature, driving a chill feeling down her spine that was not dissimilar to a winter’s breeze. Shield and spear in hand, Nari moved from the teleporter pad into the main court, Mio following diligently at her side.

’The Stygian River. Should be somewhere…this way?’ She glanced at the map quickly, before swiping it away and looking down at the kitsune. ’It’d be nice to have some company, wouldn’t it Mio? This place gives me the creeps.’
