The two oxen exploded into shards, and Nari turned her full attention to the final one standing before her. It seemed to sway on the spot, as if uncertain if it should remain in place, or look for a hasty retreat. If she didn’t know better, she might have rushed in – might have given chase after a thing that wouldn’t run even if given the chance. Instead, Nari waited, shield held in place and legs spread against any incoming force that might try and push her off balance. She knew that it was only a matter of time before they connected once more, the pair locked into conflict until only one remained.

The oxen didn’t make her wait overly long, suddenly flaring its nostrils and stomping the ground before charging towards her. Nari braced a tiny bit more, shifting the shield to deflect the creature’s attempt to slam into her, and sending it off to the side even as she brought her spear around in a sweeping arc, cutting across its side and releasing the pent up energy that had been waiting to contact something. The oxen gave a sharp cry, before spinning around to face her once more. It hadn’t finished the creature like Nari had wanted, but it had severely hurt it – so much so they each knew this fight was just about over.

The trio of oxen were gone, and Nari found herself sighing in relief as the dust settled once more. She glanced at the materials and col gained from the encounter, only to scowl in response. The haul was far less than she had hoped to achieve, and she knew that would mean she would be here much longer than she originally intended. Not that there was much to do about that – she wasn’t designed to haul in large quantities, like some individuals had built themselves towards. Instead, she’d been focused on simply keeping herself alive, so that she could ensure others remained alive.

’Well, I may not die easily, but I also don’t progress easily. I guess we’re spending the whole day here, Mio.’ The kitsune gave a small yawn – its one and only response to her commentary. Nari shook her head, tossing a piece of dried meat towards her companion, before moving across the field to one of the larger groups of oxen. A number of them shifted away, clearly not wanting to get involved with her in the moment – though a small group remained behind. ’This’ll do.’

They moved as a herd was want to do, a tactic that would normally benefit them against an unknowing, or lesser predator. Nari, however, had come to learn the various movements and behaviours of the oxen. At least, to a degree. She claimed no mastery over the knowledge, but she could at least see the telltale signs that a charge held, and the behaviours that were incorporated in such actions and movements. She used that knowledge to plant herself into a perfect position, knowing she could deflect and redirect most of their momentum off towards her waiting spear, the blade held strong and steady in preparation to slash and impale the coming beasts.

It worked almost perfectly, three of the four shifted their charge, turning towards open ground and Nari’s waiting spear. She held on tight as the blade slashed through the sides of all three, leaving them to collide to the ground as the fourth and final impacted with her shield, hard enough to uproot her footing ever so slightly. She flowed with the momentum of its charge, using her steps to reduce the overall impact of the oxen. She attempted to bring her spear around to stab it, but found it just within a reach too short for her weapon. Knowing it was futile to remain locked in place, she instead shifted to the side and let the beast pass onwards, the scarring from her metal thorns still glowing on its flanks.

Slowly the herd came back around, clearly hoping to flank Nari and catch her from behind while she was still repositioning and preparing. Instead, they turned to find her shielded and in place, awaiting their forward charge. Her readiness seemed to give them pause, if only for a few seconds. Unusual, they don’t normally plan this well. I wonder if being in a larger herd allows them to be more confident, more considerate of their situation…or maybe I’ve just finally scared them and Cardinal enough to give them actual fear. She grinned a bit at the thought of scaring the artificial intelligence behind the game, knowing it was near impossible – especially for someone like her. Still, the thought of it alone brought her a small measure of joy and enthusiasm, and she let it simmer in the back of her mind even as she refocused on the oxen.

The group had moved closer, slowly certainly, but closer nonetheless. Nari waited a few more seconds, before realising she would simply have to bring the fight to the herd – they were hesitant now, for one reason or another, and that could slowly turn bad for her if she wasn’t careful. Cautiously pulling the shield from its grounded position, she straightened herself up and charged forward, spear and shield locked before her as her feet carried her across the grounds between her original position, and the herd.

The first one to explode into a collection of shards left the oxen nervous, their herd mate simply disappearing into the air and nothingness. Nari took advantage of the confusion, leaping in and cutting at two others before being pressed backwards, the horns of the wild cattle stopping her from pressing too much of an attack in the quick moment. Still, it was enough to bring shock and confusion among the creatures, and she was determined to use it to her own success and their finality. Shield raised, she stepped back only slightly, deflecting horns and stabbing out with her own spear as things slowly shifted and transitioned slightly.

’Got you on the run, don’t I?’ Her words were a whisper, a shell of a reminder of how she used to fight. It felt odd on her tongue, and though she felt an immediate dislike to the it, she also knew that sometimes in the heat of the moment words would slip out. She cast the whole thing aside, though, as she saw the trio of oxen moving towards her. Shield braced once more, she prepared for what would – hopefully – be the final connection between the two parties. If I’m lucky enough to score the hits I need. Focus on that, not anything else.

The single remaining oxen seemed to stare at Nari for a few seconds, as if trying to figure out what witch born creature it was facing down in its final moments of life. She would’ve, in another situation perhaps, have felt a small measure of sympathy for the creature. As it was, however, she’d grown tired and incapable of her usual measure of sympathy and empathy for the creations of Cardinal.

Bringing her shield and spear up, she repositioned herself to a point where she could easily stab out at the thing once it charged – an action she knew it was going to take, if not for the sudden dip in its horned head and the way it moved forwards on its hooves. The creatures in Aincrad were nothing, if not predicable in their behaviours at some points. Still, they were dangerous enough if you weren’t paying attention – which meant that although Nari could see the movement and action well in advance, she wasn’t entirely trusting of its inevitable actuality until the creature was already moving towards her.
