Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 19 hours ago #1 Share Posted 19 hours ago Nari rolled to the side, turning away from the sunlight streaming into her room. She wanted nothing more than to return to the slumber that she had just been yanked from rudely, and although she could feel Onora shaking her again, she fought with all her effort to resist the call of the day. It was only once the voice called out that she forced her eyes open and her mind to a measure of awareness. ’If you don’t get up, I’m going to eat all your food.’ Onora’s voice and face seemed to shift into focus slowly, the words echoing in her ear as Nari tried to break free from the comfort of slumber, and instead join the unhappy position of the wakeful. ’Ah, that worked. I’m surprised. Nari groaned as she rolled again, this time onto her back. Her arms splayed to either side as she considered closing her eyes again, but any chance of escaping the requirements of the morning were lost as Onora threw a towel and apron onto her, her foot tapping on the floor heavily. ’It’s your turn in the kitchen. Get up, or I’m burning your store to the ground.’ ’I’m up…please don’t burn anything, it’s expensive.’ The groan in response to her joke was somewhat forced, and Nari grinned even as she pushed herself out of bed and into motion. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 19 hours ago Author #2 Share Posted 19 hours ago (edited) The day was already half over before she even had the chance to relax and consider her purpose beyond the crafting that needed to be done to keep up with the demand. Nari was happy that her shop was managing, but as she glanced at the long list of quests outstanding, she couldn’t help but wonder if they would need to hire some sort of assistant to run the location. ’Maybe more resource gathering would be good…though I do need some specifics for my equipment…’ Her eyes stopped on the quest that would assure she obtained what she needed, though a part of her recoiled at the thought of it. ’Fishing.’ The hiss in her tone was more than enough to show her distaste of the activity. Her mind’s eye pictured the slimy, shimmering and scaled bodies of the fish wiggling on the ground; an image that sent tingles crawling up her skin and back down her spine. Still…gleaming scales…a necessary evil… The sigh she let out gave her the final decision. As much as she may have wanted to avoid it, she knew she would have to attend the quest – and today was as good a day as any. The various frustrations from the morning, paired with a number of failures in the kitchen, had left her wanting nothing more than to get out and escape – and taking out that frustration on fish might be the best way to do it, without putting herself in danger Edited 19 hours ago by Nari-Lanreth
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 19 hours ago Author #3 Share Posted 19 hours ago (edited) The first floor was as it ever was; a mixture of busy streets, open fields and rushing non-player characters alongside players who were there for various reasons. Nari shifted through foliage as she came across the small hut, the marker leading her directly to its doorway and beyond. She knocked on the open door’s frame, calling out as she came to a stop. ’Hello? Anthony?’ A brunette covered head appeared in her view, peeking out from behind the house and waving slightly as a warm smile spread across his face. ’Over here! Anthony Gill, at your service! How can I help you out?’ Nari took a few seconds to explain her purpose, more than used to the way these prompts and responses worked now. The man waited patiently, smiling as she finished in a big, welcoming grin that she figured had worked well on her when she was just starting out. Now though, it felt almost patronising. ’I’m honoured you came to me! I’ve got here a special bait – a secret I only give out to my friends, so be honoured by that! It’ll help you get started in the process of catching a Rainbow Fish. You can harvest those for Gleaming Scales, so keep an eye out! Catch one of those, bring the scales to me, and…yeah, then you’ll be a fisher in truth!’ Nari thanked the man, before accepting the bait and heading out and away from his house. She moved through the forest a bit, wanting some privacy as she prepared the line and tackle that he had given her – a basic setup, little more than a line on a stick and a hook on the end, with a specialised looking bait that was clearly meant to catch specific fish. Not that Nari knew much about it, to begin with. About to learn a lot, I assume…here we go. She cast out the line with a measured throw, letting it flow into the air and halfway across the lake before seating herself on a nearby log, uncertain exactly of how to proceed. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 16 hours ago Author #4 Share Posted 16 hours ago (edited) Nari let the line sit for a while, her thoughts drifting after she became bored with the entire event of fishing itself – a factor that occurred rather quickly. Her mind shifted to thoughts of the future between herself and Onora, the shop and where she was going in the next foreseeable time. She knew that she would be getting back into the main aspects of being more alive, more engaged, more…something. Whether that led her back to the frontlines and the push for freedom or not, Nari wasn’t entirely sure. ’Think we’ll make it back there, Mio?’ The small fox like creature had curled up at her feet next to the log she’d settled onto, the only signs that it was still alive the soft rising and falling of its form as it continue breathing. She felt herself smile slightly at the sight, something homely and peaceful about the kitsune sleeping; an image that always brought her a measure of peace – even in the most turmoiled times. Yeah, I guess we can sit on that thought, can’t we? Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 16 hours ago Author #5 Share Posted 16 hours ago (edited) The line gave another jerk, and as Nari pulled in another fish – this one dark in scales, compared to the lighter scaled one she’d obtained earlier – she considered how long she would have to be sitting here. She knew that these quests always took time, though somehow she thought that the act of finding a specific fish would take even longer. Good thing I don’t have any major plans today, then. Onora will be a bit peeved though, so I’ll have to make it up to her somehow… She considered all the ways in which she could make amends, deciding that taking her newfound skills and applying them to make a decent homecooked meal might be enough. At least, she hoped it might be enough – she wasn’t entirely sure on that mark. A problem for later, though. For now let’s find a fish. She pulled back on the line again, casting it further into the lake – far longer in line and lead than she had meant to throw – and settled herself back against the nearby tree. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 16 hours ago Author #6 Share Posted 16 hours ago (edited) The wind had picked up at some point, and as Nari watched the bobbing fishing line, she began to understand why people enjoyed the activity. There was a level of calmness, of peace and tranquility behind it. Perhaps not the same as pure meditation, or martial arts, but a calmness that seemed to settle over her and the land around her. The lapping of waves dulled any real thoughts, and the way in which the breeze combed through the tree line left her feeling oddly relaxed; more relaxed than she had felt in some time. Is this why everyone says to get out and fish? She thought back to many of the people that she had known before the game, back in the real world. Those people that she hadn’t entirely understood or gotten along with; people who had insisted that she try the more natural aspects of life and engagement. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 16 hours ago Author #7 Share Posted 16 hours ago (edited) Maybe they were right about something. Even a broken clock… She grinned to herself at the comparison, before remembering that it was a rude statement in the way she had thought it. Still, she couldn’t quite find it in herself to apologise for the attitude, especially seeing as it had been self-contained and not heard by anyone else. Turning her thoughts, she glanced across the lake into the woodlands beyond. The expanse stretched further than Nari could really see, and she found herself wondering at the way in which it covered and shifted. Browns and greens, mixed with various spots of colour, that seemed too real to be within this virtual world. Nari found herself admiring the designs and creations of Cardinal once more; knowing that were it not for the murderous design and capacity of this specific world, it would be beautiful place to behold and spend time within. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 16 hours ago Author #8 Share Posted 16 hours ago (edited) Maybe that’s still plausible. If nothing else, the death game makes you appreciate every second a bit more…if you’re not wandering around in fear and horror at the thought of immediate execution. Nari felt herself frown. Another thought had come across her mind, and she wasn’t entirely sure how to take it as she glanced down at Mio suddenly. Is it really any more dangerous than our own world? Sure, we lived in relative safety and didn’t have to consistently fight for survive…with weapons. There was definitely fighting for survival though… Nari frowned further. She’d never been uncomfortable in her life, truly, but she had known others who lived pay cheque to pay cheque, desperate for any sort of assurance that they would be able to afford even the most basic of items that day. More oft than not she’d scrounged together an extra amount to pay the meals and accessories of those she liked most – few and far between as they may have been. She’d never considered it anything more than simply being kind, but looking back now she couldn’t help but wonder how much it might have affected their lives. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 16 hours ago Author #9 Share Posted 16 hours ago (edited) The line sudden snapped heavily in her hand, and Nari was shaken back to reality as she realised she’d drifted off in thought. She reeled in the bait and line, saddened to find nothing attached to the end of it, before releasing it back into the water. Alright, this is taking a long, long time. I feel like I’ve been here for hours already. In reality, she knew she’d barely been there an hour – but something about the relaxed activity, and the calmness of everything around her left her feeling as though it had been far longer. Sighing to herself, she confirmed the idea that she was going to be here for quite some time, and that her apology to Onora was going to have to be a lot more extravagant. At least I’m bringing home dinner. She should be content with that…if not entirely happy about it. She glanced down at the fish beside her, the core of her success thus far – and a sad core that it was, at that. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 16 hours ago Author #10 Share Posted 16 hours ago (edited) Another draw backwards and another dark scaled fish at her feet. Nari glanced at the pile collecting beside her, wondering if there would be anything specific she would need to do in order to find her special fish. She didn’t think there would be, but who was she to doubt the actions of the game? ’Hey, Mio, think salmon steaks would be good for dinner? Or…cod…or whatever these things are? Fish steaks, I guess.’ She glanced down at the kitsune, seeing the single eye staring back at her with an expression that was less than enthused at having been woken up just to give an opinion on cooking methods. ’Fine, fine. Sorry for waking you. Go back to sleep you grumpy man…no fish steaks for you though.’ She stuck her tongue out at the kitsune, who had already closed its eyes again and returned to its slumber – clearly well aware that her threats were as empty as her line was currently. Nari couldn’t help but giggle a bit at it all, sitting on a log in the middle of the forest next to a mythical nine-tailed fox, fishing for a rainbow coloured trout that would provide her magical scales. It was a tale out of a fairy book for certain. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted 16 hours ago Author #11 Share Posted 16 hours ago The glitter of multiple colours breached the water a single second before Nari pulled the line fully from the depths of the lake. She felt the excitement growing in her as she confirmed the collection of the fish – a rainbow trout, from the depths of the lake that contained glittering scales of multiple colours. Collecting her other assortments of fish, she turned towards the house that she had left behind mere hours ago, prepared to return to Anthony and confirm that she had completed the task at hand. Her steps were long and fast as Mio followed her through the forest; the small kitsune having to jog to keep up with her. Nari wanted to slow down, but excitement at her success, paired with the sudden desire to return home to Onora, caused her to carry herself faster than she intended. ’Fish!’ She held the item up before Anthony in a measure of pride and happiness, thrusting it into his face so he could confirm her collection and find. ’Fish, indeed! It seems you managed to find your rainbow trout!’ Anthony had stepped back a bit to avoid being hit in the face by the presented fish, looking it overly momentarily before confirming Nari’s success. ’Congratulations on your success, and on becoming a capable, up and coming fisher! We welcome you to the ranks, and…uh…yeah all that!’ Nari grinned broadly, putting the items away into her inventory and moving away from the house once all the words had been said, and the quest’s completion confirmed. She was excited with her success, but more excited to return home – partially to show Onora what she had done, and partially because she’d felt a nipping of hunger beginning, that she knew fish steaks would resolve.
