Visionary was back on that grind again.

They kinda had to be. A Guild didn’t build itself. And for Oscar’s part, he always found himself surprised at how much effort it took to just build things up. He almost felt bad, calling everyone out to fight these bosses and do these Quest. It was the ass-crack of dawn, after all. By way of apology, he assembled refreshments. Food and coffee to get the blood pumping. He was unaccustomed to feeding so many people, too. Even the most basic steps took a fair amount of prep work. Eventually, they’d reach critical mass and not need to worry about resources.

But right now, he was scraping the bottom of the barrel.

It was almost like he was helping prepare for a Raid. Except it was every day. Every. Single. Day. He’d need to figure something out, but for now it was time to level his goons up.

Sunlight had just begun to filter into Lysette’s apartment as the sun rose over Florenthia. A shaft of light settled on his eyes, the warmth and the radiance gently rousing Abellio from his slumber. He stretched out, rubbing his eyes as he fought the entire concept of waking up. He let his arm fall, draping over Lysette’s slumbering frame to his left. Without opening his eyes, he rolled over. His embrace tightened as he cozied up to her. Skin on skin, his head pressed to the back of her head.

She stirred.

“Watch your hand,” she mumbled groggily. “Unless you want to start something.”

She rolled over, nestling her face into Abellio’s bare chest. One arm draped over his body, the other resting on his thigh beneath the covers. Slowly moving north. Abellio nearly shuddered.

“Do you want to start something?”

Without opening her eyes, Lysette smiled sleepily. She gave him a slight nod.

“Mhmm.”

Abellio tilted her head up, kissing her softly. Then once more, less softly. His lips moved down to her collarbone, eliciting a playful giggle from Lysette. All the while her hand crept closer. And closer. And-

The incoming message chime almost made him deflate entirely. He growled, frustrated, as he moved to open his menu. Lysette’s fingers coiled around his hand, bringing it back down to wrap around her waist.

“We’re in the middle of something,” she said. She squeezed his thigh. “He can wait.”

The Blackbook was a flurry of activity. Always was - after last call and after the final patron had made their exit. Work didn’t stop just because the party did. It was a round the clock operation. Drinks and spirits and food needed to be replenished. The song list for the next evening selected. Any repairs left in the wake of rowdy patrons completed.

And so it fell to Sin and Warren. Dividing, conquering. She wouldn’t say that the two didn’t get along. But their desire to not be in close proximity to one another just made them work faster. Which, she appreciated. The sooner she got out of here the sooner she could enjoy what little of her day remained before she needed to crash for the next evening’s festivities.

She couldn’t help but think that things had gone a little out of hand. That the place was a little too popular. But, even so, the work was fun. Much more interesting that spinning that pole and taking off her clothes for perverts.

Warren had been flitting back and forth from the cellar to the wall of drinks that lined the bar. He took meticulous notes. What needed to be replenished - what he would need to bring in more of. Much to his chagrin, the sparkling blackberry had been their best seller. He had rather hoped there would at least be one bottle left to sip on while he worked. Such was life.

This was the most time-consuming part. Figuring out the what. The crafting never took long at all. He had made his list, quantities and items scribbled hastily in a shorthand that only he understood.

“Alright Sin, I’ve got what I need,” he said as he placed his notebook on the bar. “I’ll just cra-”

A chime. He opened his menu on reflex. Sin did too.

A quest. Guild combat. Warren pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance

“Guess I’ll do it when I get back.”

They both made a beeline for the exit. So much for not having to deal with each other for the rest of the day.

Lysette and Abellio arrived on Floor 25 a full hour after the message was sent. When they stepped off of the Teleport Platform, Lysette was glowing. Looking smug, pleased with herself. Like the cat who ate the canary. Abellio was in her ear, whispering. His arm around her waist, his attention enraptured. They had arrived, in name only.

“Sorry we’re late,” Lysette said. Her tone indicated that she wasn’t in the least bit sorry. Abellio finally pulled himself away from her, beaming at the assembled group.

“Where’s Vitalis,” he asked. No excuses, no platitudes. Either it didn’t register as something worth doing, or he’d just forgotten entirely.

But really, Oscar wasn’t mad. He was glad they had showed up. Would have been a sort of fucked-up power play to get upset that the people with lives - or tasks he had assigned them personally - didn’t drop everything and come the second he called.

“I AM OVER HERE!”

Vitalis’ booming voice called everyone to attention. He stood outside of the entrance to the settlement, path barred by a big fuck-off minotaur with a wicked looking axe.

“THE MINOTAURS CAN’T GET ME HERE!”

The rest of the group exchanged glances, then quickly helped themselves to the food Oscar provided. After they were done, they made their way out of town, quickly joining their healer outside of the settlement.

“Have you considered getting rid of that cursor,” Warren asked, draping his arm over Vitalis’ shoulder as they walked.

“How? Solo quest. I don’t fight.”

“And it’s kind of a bitch at that,” Oscar added.

“But he never killed anyone,” Warren said. “Shouldn’t it be a cakewalk?”

“No,” Oscar said. “It scales based on how many people you killed. But the base stats of the boss are actually kinda terrifying.” He playfully punched Warren’s shoulder. “So it looks like we’re gonna have to play around it.”

“Hey so, we’re supposed to be finding a tower, yeah?” Sinnamon looked up at the really tall labyrinth wall. “So, uh. How we gonna do that?”

It was a fair question. As far as Oscar knew, there were no such towers in the Labyrinth that made up Floor 25. There were, however, a ton of spiders. So he was very excited to get the hell up out of there.

“Maybe we need to climb to the top of the walls?” Abellio offered. “I mean, it really seems like the only way.”

Everyone turned their gaze towards Abellio. Not in such a way as to indicate they thought it was a ridiculous idea. Quite the opposite, really. It was a stroke of genius. Only problem was how they were supposed to get up there.

“Maybe we could form, like, a human ladder or something? It doesn’t seem like the walls are that tall.”

“Guys!”

Lysette called from the top of the wall. She held her hand over her brow, leaning forward as she peered off into the distance. “I found the tower! You coming?”

Oscar looked up, placing his hands on his hips as she turned around to look down at them.

“How did you get up there?”

Lysette shrugged. “Haven’t you guys played Mario? Figure it out.”

Five more sets of wall jumps later, they had all made it to the top of the labyrinth. It was quite surreal up here, the winding walls turning in on one another. A different sort of maze, if you stuck to the beaten path. They, however, did not. They cheated, cutting through straight to the tall tower off in the distance. They bounded over the walls, keeping the tower in the center of their vision. It was a straight shot as the crow flew. And it was a straight shot for them too.

Arriving at the tower, the group made their way up to the top through a ruined staircase. It was much larger than it looked in the distance. The trek to the top took almost as long as the trek just to get to it. Finally, after much effort, they all made it to the top. But they wouldn’t have any time to rest.

“That’s a big fuck off dragon,” Vitalis remarked. “Hold on, I’ve got something for this.”

Vitalis had been saving something in the wings just for such an occasion. The dragon clocked them, swiveling her head in their direction. Vitalis raised one hand and snapped his fingers.

“Haste.”

A flash of green. The winds kicked up, shrouding the members of his party. He’d had this skill for a while, but hadn’t had enough energy to actually execute it. He was excited to see how it worked.

“Go get em guys, you should be much faster now.”

As the winds coalesced around Abellio, a new status effect appeared on his HUD.

Hastened: Allows the Player to attack twice in a single round.

“Holy shit,” Abellio said. “How long have you been holding onto this one, Vitalis?”

Vitalis exhaled heavily, his eyes flicking up to his energy bar. It was barely hanging on by a thread.

“A while. Energy cost is insane. I don’t even think I could cast a heal right now. So make sure you guys make this count.” If it had been any group other than this one - Vitalis would have thought twice.

Abellio nodded, immediately taking off towards the dragon. He stopped just within striking range, his weapon glowing with energy as he spooled up one sword art. A slice, the attack hit. In the next moment, he followed through with the attack and then changed direction. Another charge, another attack. An overhead slam with both hands, driving the dragon’s chin into the ground.

“Oh fuck yeah,” Abellio said. “Hell yeah dude!”

While Abellio celebrated, Lysette had already vanished into the shadows. And as he advanced, she was in his shadow. Abellio struck fast and hard, Lysette surged forward. Not to attack at first. The dragon was a wily boss. She whipped her tail around, trying to bat Abellio away at the end of his assault. She spun her spear in her hand, flicking the tip down and then back up, batting away the dragon’s tail. It let out a roar of pain as her poisons seared through its veins.

Lysette quickly placed one hand on Abellio’s shoulder, flipping up and over his head. Using him as a springboard, she pushed herself into the air. Adjusting her posture in midair, she came down like a comet and speared the end of the dragon’s tail, pinning it to the stones beneath them. She looked up, quickly tossing her hair back.

“Pay attention, okay babe?”

“God you’re hot, Lysette,” Sin exclaimed as she blew past both of them. She planted her feet, cocked back her fist and drove it straight down between the dragon’s eyes. Her legs flew out from under her massive frame, crashing down as the stun took hold and her vision began to swim. In the next instant, Sin pulled her weapon from thin air and plunged it deep into the dragon’s flank. She pushed forward, blade carving through the dragon’s scales like butter.

She reached the end of her strike, ripping her weapon from the creature’s flesh and leaving a jagged gash in her wake. The team was doing a very good job at keeping up the pressure. Lysette had that tail under control and the stun would keep them safe for a while. Since she was able to take a breather, she did so. Driving her weapon into the ground, she leaned against it as she arched her back like a cat. Her blue eyes fell upon Oscar and Warren who had yet to move.

“Boys? Get ‘em.”

Oscar moved like lightning and struck twice as hard. His first attack sent him blazing past Abellio and Lysette. He leaped onto the back of the dragon, a blue streak as his weapon carved a deep gash beside the ridges on the dragon's spine. Momentum carried him off the dragon's back. Shooting through the air, straight towards a pillar. He flipped forward, kicking his feet out in front of him. The pillar cracked as it stopped him cold. His knees bent. His eyes fell upon the dragon, taking aim - upside down - at his quarry.

Charge Activated.

The cracks beneath his feet deepened into a small crater.

Rhino's Horn Used.

The crater deepened, the cracks spider webbing down and around the pillar.

The top of came off as Oscar pushed off of the stone. Blasted backwards by his sudden acceleration. He came back the way he came, cutting a line parallel to the first. He plucked an item from his inventory, tossing it through the air.

"Abellio!"

“Says the literal stripper,” Lysette said with a giggle. “I can’t hold a candle.”

Sin turned her attention back to Lysette. She stuck out her tongue and gave the singer a wink. “Oh shut up babe. You’re a bombshell-” Sin cut her eyes towards Abellio. “I hope he knows how lucky he is.”

“Oh I do. Trust me,” Abellio said.

“If we’re done flirting,” Warren said, calmly walking up to the dragon. “Look alive.”

Despite the stun, the dragon was not to be messed with. Warren managed to land a single attack. But only a single attack. Before he could wind up to hit it again, the dragon suddenly opened its maw. There was an ominous glow in the depths of its throat. He positioned himself between the rest of his group and the growing light. The Matriarch unleashed a stream of flame. Fire licked around Nebula’s barrier, flashing out in all directions - but most importantly away from his friends.”

Abellio caught the item in midair. He whipped around, bringing his sword low and hooking it under the dragon’s chin. With a powerful thrust, he slammed the creature’s mouth shut. The stream of flame stopped suddenly. He spared one glance towards Warren, relieved when he didn’t look all that worse for wear. Ripping his sword from the dragon’s flesh, he tossed the crystal into the air and struck.

The trajectory of his attack cleaved right through the crystal. Lighting struck his weapon - Divine Rancor erupted into white flame. Now wielding the power of the heavens, Abellio pointed his sword down and drove it into the dragon’s eye all the way to the hilt. It let out a guttural roar of pain, whipping its tail fruitlessly as the “pain” wracked its “body.”

Sin let out a loud laugh. Arm held over her stomach, she doubled over, cackling with glee - like they weren’t in the middle of a fight.

“Talk about hilting yourself in a bitch!”

“Oh goddammit,” Oscar exhaled in a wheeze. Placing his hands on his knees, his voice joined the chorus of laughter that ripped through the party. Lysette was next to join, giggling brightly as she struggled to keep her grip on her spear.

“Abellio,” she scolded in between the laughs. “With a dragon? Really?”

Abellio looked shocked for a moment, before he himself was lost into a fit of laughs. Even Warren - cold slab that he was - snorted in amusement.

Vitalis watched on in horror as his entire party lost themselves in the joke, half doubled over, eyes closed and streaming tears. It fed back in on itself, rising to a fever pitch before slowly mellowing out.

Oscar rose to his full height, swiping the tears from his eyes with his thumb and chuckling as he set his eyes back on the target.

“Hoo! Okay, I’m good. I’m good-” He cocked back his arm, throwing his sword forward with enough force to break the sound barrier at the tips of his fingers. “Let’s kill the bitch.”

It was times like these that reminded Warren why he stuck around with these idiots. Small little moments of comfort. It reminded him of his old job, his old buddies. Back before it all went to shit and he was shipped home. It was nice. He really didn’t have any other way to describe it. Simple and heart warming. It had, in the past, taken a lot to ignite his passions. To get him focused on something and to get him to put something ahead of his own wants and desires.

And striking out at the dragon, as the fight wound down to an end, he figured that was Oscar’s master plan. Get him out in the world. Get him to meet people. To actually care. A hermit no longer. Instead, he was part of something bigger. And it wasn’t his first time - being a part of something bigger.

But after throwing himself almost literally into the dragon’s maw, he found himself quite content with this particular bigger thing.

Lysette had been the first to realize it. How despite the danger of the death game they were in, it was so easy for this group - this nascent Guild - to find moments of bliss like these. She was grateful for every single moment that she was able to spend with these people. Every laugh and tear and smile and every anxious heartbeat. She didn’t care that it was all virtual. It wouldn’t be forever.

And when she got out, she would have the resources to find them all again. Assuming her family didn’t spend all of her money while she was stuck here.

This was real. And it was hers. The family she’d always wanted. She took a deep breath, driving her spear into the dragon’s other eye. Her attack did just enough damage to drop its health to zero. The creature shattered like glass, leaving behind only its loot.

“I really love you guys, you know that right?”

They were absolutely fucking insane. Touched in the head. What party just takes a break for comedy in the middle of a fight? Weren’t they supposed to be fighting for their survival? Being cautious and safe and trying to live another day. He looked out over them, horrified at first. But that soon abated. Why was he concerned? Their health bars were full. They were okay. Hell, the boss didn’t even get an opportunity to really attack - if you didn’t count that fire breath that Warren ate.

So why shouldn’t they just enjoy themselves?

Vitalis made himself useful, searching around the tower for any loot. He managed to find a small treasure trove of armor, which he would make a point to send to the guild vault. Turning, he found himself smack dab in Sin’s face. In her arms was a pile of deep red jewels.

“Hang onto these until we get back?”

And there was a final item, one that Oscar pocketed for himself. He made it look so casual, but he knew that the man was up to something. Oscar noticed that Vitalis had clocked him and merely smiled, holding one finger up to his lips.
