F28-pt-pp Meathook Hours GQ: <<Suppression>>

Recommended Posts

Guild Quest!

Oscar was the pragmatic sort. When he found out that he could make his own custom quest for Visionary, he was absolutely beside himself with joy. Everything was modular - the party limit and the goals - so he was able to have a field day with it. He was very quick to register their new Quest: <<Suppression>>.

And he really only had one reason for it.

Normally, field bosses could only be fought with a party of four. Dungeons too, if he were being honest. But if his goons were to all pick up the Guild Quest, those limitations evaporated. So he could take on some of the most dangerous situations in relative safety. After all, there were few things in the game that could stand up to an entire six man jumping them. His mind was abuzz with the implications - thinking of the newest person on their roster more than anything.

When the Quest Accept screen popped up dead center of his vision, Warren couldn’t deny that he was interested. He had recently worked with Sin on some equipment - so he was rather excited to take it out to play. His old kit hadn’t been bad, but this put that to shame. He was called to Floor 28, so that’s where he went. The group was already there, chowing down on buffs. He joined them.

“So,” Warren said, after swallowing a particularly large egg and washing it down with an energy drink.

“What’s the target?”

“Midnight Ripper,” Sin replied. “Apparently,.it was just found. And also, it’s got a crazy good item drop.”

Warren nodded.

“Well, with the six of us…” He didn’t really need to finish the thought. This was just more of the same. They’d already showed out on some pretty difficult bosses. What was one more, in the grand scheme?

Vitalis nodded in agreement. He didn’t partake of any of the buffs. He didn’t need to. The one-trick pony of the party. It just so happened that his one trick was pretty goddamn good. He leaned against a wall, just outside of the safe zone. He really didn’t want to have to deal with dodging the guards. At some point, he would probably need to go do Redemption. At least to get this headache off of his head. But, what would happen the next time he was on one of his nightly strolls?

Seemed like a whole lot of effort just to earn himself an Orange cursor again. Besides, he didn’t need to be a part of the pregame feast. There weren’t really any enhancements that he could make use of. And he hadn’t held a sword his entire time stuck in Aincard - other than that time that the tutorial made him equip one.

Abellio stayed excited. These outings, when the entirety of Visionary showed up to the function, were always so much fun. He was at his happiest around his friends, after all. He scarfed down the offered Feasts. A bit more… messily than would have been proper. But he was just so damn excited to get going! It seemed like every time they did something like this, everyone was just a little bit better than the last time. It was so nice watching everyone’s growth.

Because it was more than just levels. It was about learning how to play and being comfortable with the whole thing. You could have all of the experience in the world and still struggle if you didn’t know how to move. What openings to seize, when to dodge or block. Not that it really mattered. They had a very strong rotation going on. Rarely, if ever, did the boss actually get to move.

“You guys ready to knock this out?”

Lysette was unusually vibrant. Normally, so early in the morning, she needed at least thirty minutes to get herself together. But this had become something of a semi-frequent routine. To the point where she found herself getting up in the early hours of the morning, right at sunset. She would busy herself in her recording studio. Fuss with one of the many instruments on her walls. All while treating herself to a nice cup of coffee. And sometimes Abellio was there too. More often than not, recently.

But those late night conversations picked up in the morning. Over breakfast. Every day was a new page taken from his book and added to hers, vice versa. Every joke and kiss and moan became another footnote in their combined volume. She greeted every day with an energy that just just hadn’t had in years and years.

Rounding out the group, Sin was happy to be an EXP [censored]. She and Vitalis had been on similar levels when this little binge of Oscar’s had started and now they were on the cusp of maxing out. Navigating those Paragon Levels - whatever they were. She was certain that Oscar would explain them when the time came, so she didn’t really worry about it. And fresh off of her win against the Witch of the West, she was excited to see how everyone in the group came back together. What new feats would they unleash upon Aincrad today?

It would probably be something insane. It always was. Oscar had a penchant for quite literally breaking the game. She didn’t think that she’d ever see Warren take damage before. Lysette and Abellio were absolutely nasty when they popped off. And really it was all thanks to Vitalis. So it left her wondering what exact niche she filled.

“Oh that’s a big boy,” Vitalis remarked with a whistle as the group found their way to the Midnight Ripper. It was a touch too close to the Settlement for anyone’s comfort. Which he supposed was why they were here. Why the Quest was called <<Suppression>>. Killing the thing would reset it back to its original spawn location - hopefully comfortably very far away from any unsuspecting or unprepared Players.

“You guys know the deal,” he said. He brought his hand up, thumb and middle finger touching. With a snap, he commanded the winds. A burst of emerald light washing over the party. Haste activated, invigorating their spirits. Allowing them to move faster, strike faster. “That’s me done,” he said.

One day, Vitalis might be able to pull off his trick and still have something in the tank left over to be useful. Sadly, it seemed that today was not that day.

Oddly enough, Lysette was the first into the fray this time.

Raw stats made the monster incredibly difficult to hit. Three evasion? Are you serious?

She needed to bridge that gap before the rest of her party could take care of business. With a burst of black, Lysette disappeared into the shadows. The next moment, she reappeared next to the Midnight Ripper. She struck hard, first jabbing the creature with the butt of her spear in a stunning strike. A quartet of status effects manifested next to its health bar as Lysette’s poisons did their work. The stun - stripping the boss of its Evasion - made her next attack much easier to land.

She pivoted backwards, sharp movements accented by the spear whirling over the back of her hand. The tip was brought down low. Lysette hooked it with the tip of her boot and kicked forward. The weight of the spear head caused her to launch forward, burying the deadly tip into the Ripper’s neck. At least she thought, not realizing that her weapon had got caught on the Ripper’s pauldron. She was busy. She didn’t miss a beat as she moved to a rhythm only she heard.

The dancer and the warrior finally married together.

She didn’t notice, but Abellio did. Breaking off into a sprint, he vaulted up and over Lysette’s head. With expert balance, he ran up Lysette’s extended spear. As he reached the end, he planted one foot upon the Ripper’s pauldron, the other balanced against the lip of the beast’s breast plate. He shifted his footing, hooking his boot under Lysette’s spear and tilting his toe up. The spear came free, allowing Lysette to spin away.

In the same motion, he grabbed his blade halfward down and guided it through one of the slits in the Ripper’s helmet. Ripping it free, he lowered his posture and launched himself straight into the air. His sword thrown back behind him, a bolt of lightning struck from the heavens. Divine Rancor burst into white flame. He began to fall.

He threw his hand out in front of him, tossing a crystal out between him and the field boss. Abellio swung his weapon - holy glow of his sword intensifying as it carved through the crystal. He became the bolt itself, screaming towards the ground with a streak of while light trailing behind him. Ivory flame carved through his enemy, taking a hefty chunk of health with it.

Well Abellio and Lysette were certainly popping off.

It was always a treat to see what new ways they would figure out how to work in tandem together. He wondered if they planned it out, whether it was choreographed. The way they moved, it almost seemed like it had to be. But-

The two of them resonated on such a fundamental level that it really wouldn’t surprise him if their feats of strength were completely spur of the moment.

Warren was not one to be outdone. It became clear to him that he would not enjoy the benefit of seeing what his new <<Warding>> Enhancement would do. So he might as well throw himself wholeheartedly into the fray. He brought his hand up and over his shoulder, bringing <<Save the Queen>> to the ready in a shower of sparks. His attacks were swift. Powerful lunges moving into twisting slashes, each attack punctuated by a small explosion at the point of contact that cracked the air.

Oscar found himself pleased that things were proceeding as smoothly as they were.

They’d found their equilibrium. Lysette or Sin would start them off, Abellio would fucking drill the thing and… Warren was there. His build didn’t lend itself well to the obscene levels of damage that their dedicated dealers could do. But he wasn’t there to just deal damage. And really, once they fought something that could actually hit back, he was quite certain that Warren would be an absolute brick wall that they wouldn’t be able to force themselves through.

And so he added his own efforts to the pile. Striking like lightning, swift and hard. Blowing every single temporary cooldown that he had in order to bring the boss low. And he did - got the thing almost into the red. Close enough that a combination of Sin’s hits and damage from Lysette’s poisons would finally kill the thing.

Sin got the last hit. She wasn’t accustomed to being the last to move. But it was definitely a treat watching all of her friends jump the absolute hell out of what was supposed to be one of the hardest field bosses. It was nothing but a sitting duck the entire time, stunned and unable to evade the incoming punishment. And it turned out that they had more than enough damage to kill it before it even presented itself as a danger to the party. Which was always nice.

The threat was just theater. At least to them. She shuddered to think what would happen if this boss managed to find its way to an unsuspecting party. They would be the ones being ambushed, she thought. A one-way ticket straight to having their names carved into the Monument. And with that knowledge, she couldn’t help but think that this was a stroke of genius on Oscar’s part.

As the boss died, Oscar let out a heavy sigh.

“Well that was anticlimactic. What else should we get into?”

A dungeon?

A dungeon like the one right next to them, the entrance obfuscated only by their distraction with the Midnight Ripper. Was a rather fortunate thing to just stumble upon it.

“We could run that dungeon,” he said as he pointed over to the stairs leading down into the yawning Abyss of the earth. The rest of the group nodded. Like Oscar, they didn’t seem to be content with only killing the boss. So, one by one, they headed down the steps. Oscar was excited, actually. This would be the first dungeon that he’d actually run - if you didn’t count that weird viking-themed Halloween event. That had been a fun one, though. With any luck, this dungeon excursion would be just as fun. He would hate for everyone to go home disappointed.

“So has anyone else actually run a dungeon before?”

Vitalis had. Or, at least, he had been present for a group that did run one. He’d always show up halfway through, when the strangers were stuck in and about to die. He never did see a clear though. Once they got their health up, most of the time they ran for the hills. Which was the pragmatic option. Better to live to fight another day.

But everything he’d seen from his fellow Visionary members told him he would - for the first time - see the end of one. Which he honestly considered to be a treat. Any time he got to experience something new was a cause for celebration. As they descended the stairs, the narrow corridor opened into a large arena. In the middle were four mobs. They looked like smaller versions of the Midnight Ripper. Much, much smaller versions.

As the group crossed the threshold, the mobs came to life. Their heads snapped into the groups direction as they hopped to their feet. They didn’t manage to take a single step forward before Lysette was upon them. She didn’t bother with stealth this time, instead going straight on the offensive. She wasn’t trying to stun, she wasn’t trying to poison. She was trying to clear the trash out of their way as quickly as she possibly could.

And she was a storm of strikes. Her spear glinted in the faint torchlight as she spun it around her body. With expert precision, she would dance away from the Mini Ripper’s blades, only to snap back and drive her spear through her aggressor. Over and over again. A dark blur in a dark room. If anyone thought that she needed the shadows in order to be effective, she corrected that notion here.

Sin was quick to join Lysette’s assault. The creatures in this dungeon were more sturdy than the ones they generally fought. It took two of them to lay the group low. Sin could see that - even at a distance. Lysette was no slouch, but if even she was struggling to deal enough damage to kill them outright, Sin wouldn’t let her flounder. After each one of Lysette’s strikes, Sin would follow up immediately. The combined force of their efforts would slay the monsters on by one.

Each blow lowering the danger. Pushing them closer and closer to a moment’s peace where they didn’t need to concern themselves over any sort of incoming damage. If her time running with this group taught her anything it was that a good offense was the best defense. Things couldn’t hurt you if they weren’t alive to do so. Hit them hard, hit them fast and you’ll live another day.

As Sin and Lysette dispatched the first group, two larger Rippers descended from the ceiling. Bursting out from the darkness, each one was on a collision course for each of the two women. But they were locked in. Paying attention. The Rippers crashed into the ground, cracking the stone where Sin and Lysette just were. They had retreated seconds prior, vaulting backwards and putting distance between themselves and the new additions.

The Rippers twitched. Made like they were going to pursue. The Vampire corrected that notion, Oscar’s black blade ripping through the air and carving through their chests. Their attention then shifted to him, wicked blades glinting in the torchlight as they cocked back their arms to strike. Oscar corrected his posture, spinning his blade over the back of his hand to adjust his grip. A metallic clang, flying spark. He deftly parried the incoming strikes. Unbothered, unmoving. Simply whipping his weapon into position as they unleashed their flurry of blows.

The sound of steel on steel grew ever more staccato as the Rippers unleashed their flurry on Oscar. Abellio had never seen him on the defensive before. Oscar never really bothered. Monsters just didn’t do enough damage to make him sweat. And maybe he was showboating, but Abellio didn’t really care. With his penchant for over the top attacks, one would realize just how much skill the man had.

He didn’t just move - he flowed. Parrying blows with impossible speed, anticipating angles of attacks and moving with grace that a man that large should not have been able to muster. And yet he did.

The scene distracted Abellio so much that when he finally got the presence of mind together to make his own attack, he whiffed it on one of the Rippers. But it just made Oscar’s job easier. Up close and personal, it was simply poetry in motion.

“Show off,” Warren said as he struck the Ripper with a powerful thrust. The force of the blow blasted the creature back far enough that he had enough breathing room to turn his attention back to Oscar. “You just can’t help yourself, can you?”

Oscar shrugged, flashing Warren a cheeky grin. “Well when you got it like that.”

“Right,” Warren said, flipping <<Save the Queen>> up to rest against his shoulder. “Gotta show us all up, right?”

“Nah,” Oscar replied. “Just having a little fun. It’s the only bit to be had right now. The Field Boss was disappointing and I’m not really too impressed by the dungeon either.”

Warren nodded. “Suffering from success, I suppose.”

“Agreed. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the thrill is gone when we’re jumping these things with an entire stacked party.”

“Boys,” Sin said, sauntering up with her weapon at the ready. “Stop jacking yourselves off. We haven’t even seen the boss yet.”

“Do you really think the boss is going to be all that interesting, Sin?”

Oscar question was a fair one. And it really only had one reply.

“Nah, not really. You two are just insufferable. Especially you, Oscar. They might b NPCs but bullying is still bullying.”

“Oh? Heart bleeding for the inanimate objects?”

Sin launched her weapon through the air, her sword impaling the Ripper and pinning it to the ground. It shattered like glass and her weapon disappeared, only to reappear back in her hand.

“No, but I would very much like to get back to my day. I have plans after this.”

“Well so-rry,” Oscar drawled. “Let’s go ahead and finish this up so the princess can go get her nails done.”

Sin scoffed, tossing her hair haughtily. “They need to be perfect. How else am I going to carve up that hard back of yours, babe?”
