SP-F7: "Mountain of Materials"

Recommended Posts

Mari picked herself up, grumbling at how such a tumble was able to rip up and apart her clothes. "Dammit..." She muttered to herself, attempting to wipe off the dirt and rocks. Mari gave her clothes a light shake, turning to see if she could get back up. There was a steep incline and it looked as though the surface was made of gravel. Mari took a few cautious steps on it and found herself trailing back down. Guess she could rule out backtracking. There would have to be another way out of the cavern; be damned if Mari was going to get stuck down here and die.

Mari continued forward, staying close to the walls of the cavern, her hand trailing along its rough surface as she walked down the path. She could hear the chittering of bats, still - and she could smell water. There may be some form of underground lake nearby, or a stream or waterfall. If she found that she may find her way to the surface again. Mari could see light at the end of the tunnel. She gave a smirk at the irony as she headed toward it.

Mari shielded her eyes as she came into the next room - it was odd for an underground cavern to be this...bright. There were glowing crystals dotted around the edges of the room, they hung from the ceiling and there was a rather large cluster in the centre. Didn't Moartea once say they were valuable materials? What did he call them....Mari pursed her lips trying to remember. Come to think of it; she hadn't heard from him in quite some time. Whatever happened to him?

Mari wandered to the nearest crystal and struck it with her dagger; a small piece successfully fell off in the form of a material. She placed it in her satchel. Good start.

Mari tried again, same stalagmite, striking a little lower, this time...not so lucky. Nothing happened. the top half of it just crumbled away into nothing. Perhaps they were a little more delicate than they first appeared. Mari sighed. Thoughts wandering back to Moartea, come to think of it; she hadn't seen him on her friends list either. Did he die? Mari was a tad surprised as Moartea didn't seem like the type of person to succumb so easily to the vices of the game.

Still, there have been stranger things.

Mari shifted, moving to a new group of glowing crystals, she carefully traced a few of them; they were long, jagged and had sharp edges. Some were pointed at the end. It could be quite lethal if one wasn't careful Mari tapped on one that seemed to be denser than the rest. It's shine wasn't as bright - it gave a soft 'tink' so she picked up her dagger and struck it. Sure enough, she gained another material. "Tch." This was easy. Why would anyone complain about doing this sort of thing?

Mari tried again, using the same technique...she ran her fingers along the crystals, wiping the dirt and dust  from them - and finding one that seemed denser and stronger than the rest, she'd strike it. She did this a second time but it broke away into nothing. Perhaps it wasn't strong enough? Mari went to a light crystal stalagmite that was bright, and almost clear. She tapped it with her finger and it shattered instantly. At least she could confirm her theory.

If it were anyone else; they may have stopped to enjoy the scenery. It was beatiful really. The room was light up with a myriad with rainbow lights; bouncing off the walls and crystals. If Alkor were still talking to her...Mari may have bought him here. She wondered if he would appreciate it, or do as she was doing and focus on what was important. Collecting Materials. Mari half heartedly struck the crystal. Tears forming in her eyes. God she missed him...

Mari struck down at the stalagmite again, and successfully managed to get another material. She didn't feel happy about it though. She just placed it in her satchel again, her movements almost robotic as she had to blink back tears. Mari was trying to persevere, to continue forward, strong in her resolve. It was just becoming harder and harder. She had vowed to kill Life, and even drove away Kosan.

Who was left? Celes was around....but Mari hadn't heard much from her - and didn't want to talk to her right now. Celes had her own problems to deal with and Mari wasn't one to thrust them onto another. Mari knew she was unstable right now, and didn't want to lash out and attack Celes either; the girl had been so kind and generous toward Mari. She wasn't going to ruin that. No...it was better for her to fade into obscurity.

Mari decided that she had spent enough time in the brightly lit cavern; it was about time she found the source of that water; and further investigate the noises of the chattering bats. One more, one more strike and she'd continue forward. Mari slammed her dagger into the crystal, and it burst into nothing; she sighed. Of course, no such luck. She left the brightly lit room. It was too bright for any bats to venture there Mari assumed. So it'd be a good escape if she needed it.

Mari slipped into the next corridor, and low and behold there was another bat there. Sleeping, hanging upside down from the ceiling. Mari crouched down, carefully aiming her dagger at it. This one was a little bigger than the rest; so she assumed it had more HP. She threw her dagger at it, it landed and the bat fell down to the ground with a thud and a screech.

The bat, with Mari's dagger still embedded into its chest flew up into the air. The dagger fell and Mari tumbled forward; deftly grabbing the dagger and standing again. The Bat tried to swoop at her, but it came down too low, low enough for Mari to strike it, slashing across its wing. It gave a startled cry as the wing froze. Mari kissed her dagger. Thankful at how useful the thing had become to her. She had succumbed to its freezing effects herself and knew all too well how helpless the creature felt.

The bat was useless, it knew it was going to die; rather than trying to attack Mari it uselessly hopped around. Every so often emitting a large, shrill sound. The sound seemed to bounce off the walls of the small corridor. Was it calling others? Mari shrugged. She didn't care. She'd make short work of them too. Just as she had this one. Mari picked it up by its frozen wing, and slung it into the air. As it came back down toward the ground Mari struck it again with her dagger; and it burst. This time, yielding no loot. What a shame.

Mari went to continue forward, and was just about to leave the coridoor but was knocked back by a large bat, larger than the one she just fought. "Geez..." She muttered as she rolled backward to gain some distance between herself and the first bat. It was so large that the bat behind it wasn't able to shove past the first one. That was lucky for Mari. She'd be able to work on them, one at a time.

Mari wasted no time in springing forth to attack the first bat; it was as large as she was tall. Or in Mari's case...short. Mari slammed the dagger into the bat, pushing it back into the second Big Bat Sentinel. She grimaced as it bit down hard into her shoulder, damn. These guys were getting tougher. Would there be a boss waiting for her in the next room?

Mari shook the bat off of her, lifting her dagger out of its large, bristly chest she then shoved it straight into the underside of the bat's maw. The bat gurgled, letting go of her shoulder. it tried to cry out; but ice quickly covered its maw; it was unable to make a sound. The bat wildly thrashed its head around. Slamming its body against the walls. Causing rubble and stone to fall down around them. "What the hell..." Mari muttered. If she wasn't careful she'd get buried alive.

Mari charged at the bat again; slashing her dagger diagonally downward across its torso. The bat gave a muffled cry; the ice never had a chance to melt, just as the bat never had a chance to win against Mari. The ugly beast burst into an array of data, and the second one finally was able to push forward. It snapped and snarled at her, a glob of spit falling from it's mouth. "Bring it on." Mari muttered.

The bat went to charge forward, the confined space made it difficult to move, difficult to doge. Still, it also meant the bat could only move forward. It was so large it wasn't able to move side to side. Mari was easily able to dodge its strike by rolling forward - underneath its legs. She now faced the big bat's back; watching as it struggled to turn around. Mari used this opportunity to strike, bringing her dagger down hard into the mid of its back.

The Big Bat Sentinel tried as hard as it possibly could; but it just couldn't turn around to face Mari. Rather - it fell onto its back after attempting to shift in the tight space. The bat was twice, almost three times the size of the petite, pink haired girl. Mari found it hard enough to fight in such a small corridoor, she couldn't imagine how hard it would be for the giant bat. Not that she cared. Mari lurched forward, stomping on the bats large forehead as she ran the dagger alongside its exposed, fuzzy stomach.

The Big Bat Sentinel finally, in its last moments of life managed to get a hit on Mari. it lashed out with bent, leathery wings - slashing across Mari's forearm, the cut was light - moreso. It seemed as though it was just a graze. Mari grinned a lop sided grin. "Bout time you landed one." She muttered, grabbing hold of the wing and pulling hard - as she ran the dagger along it. a big red digital gash appeared before the beast broke into a flurry of data.

"Too little too late."

Mari muttered as she picked up the loot. A bunch of Col and a few materials.
