[PP:F1] On a Sunday Afternoon (Dante) COMPLETED

Recommended Posts

Zaz was tired. She’d been leveling so hard recently that she ha d burnt herself out. She knew she ought to be out in the field training and gather supplies, but she just couldn’t be bothered to do so. Nope, not Azazel; she was going to spend her day the best way she knew how: in her favorite place, drinking many beers, and doing nothing.

That day Anna had been drinking since eight in the morning. It wasn’t a terribly big deal because no matter how much alcohol she consumed in Aincrad, the only thing that ever happened to her is she’d get a little fuzzy. It was both fun and disappointing at the same time, but whatever. It killed time, and gave her a reason to do nothing and enjoy it. She lay her head upon the cool table, surrounded by at least ten empty mugs of beer.

“BARKEEP!†she called,†More beer!†She waved her hand with a little flourish . “

Bring me more beer!†She repeated.

"What's this?" Dante remarked as a bar sign crept into his vision. At the sight of a bar that he could actually get into, a huge smile sprawled across his face. "Good thing they don't have IDs in Aincrad, am I right?" The corny joke of his own brought a short burst of laughter as he tried to control himself from his own poor joke.

Dante swung open the door to the bar and was immediately slammed in the eardrum with a scream let off by a woman at the bar.

"BARKEEEEEEEEP, BRING ME MORE BEER!"

Dante laughed and knew that he already figured out where he was going to sit. He walked up to the "drunken" girl at the bar and tapped her on the shoulder. "Hey! You look like you're having a great time, I love having a great time too, my name is Dante, mind if I join you?" he asked with squinty eyes and a broad smile across his face.

Anna heard a voice. Someone was talking to her?  She lifted her head and found yet another addressing her. He was looking for some fun, and apparently in her state she looked to be entertaining. It was a one woman show starring Azazel.

â€œSure. Why the hell not,†Zaz said as she kicked out the seat across from her, “Have a seat,†She told the dark haired boy. Many a strange thing had happened to Zaz while being in Aincrad. Having a few drinks with children was just one of them. It didn’t bother her since they could never get drunk. But, on the downside, neither could she.

“HEY!†Anna yelled as she turned to look toward the bar. “BRING ME TWO BEERS!†She hollered.

“I don’t think I’ve seen you here before,†Anna said to the young man.

Dante laughed and took the seat he was assigned. "Well, I don't spend much time at the bar scene I guess." he said as he thought to himself, "Hell, I've never even been IN a bar!" But that didn't much matter, what more was expected from a kid his age?

He looked around, then glanced at the numerous empty mugs, and picked up from the pause in his sentence "But I'm going to assume you spent PLENTY of time here!"

Dante went on realizing she probably hadn't been fully aware of what he just said, "Anyways, yeah, I am pretty new here! My name is Dante, and what about you?"

He stuck out his hand in gesture of a handshake.

“No I don’t expect someone your age to have frequented many bars in the real world.†She said and nodded. He didn’t quite look 21 yet so she could understand why he might not have known this place. However, this was SAO and she’d been drinking with a young teen, so it was a far different kind of thing in this RPG.

“Umm… yes…†Azazel said as she propped her head into her hands as she leaned against the table, “You could say I live here….†He said with a smile, “Not always this table, but this establishment.â€

The young man introduced himself. “Dante, hmmm?†she repeated. She thought on his name a moment before speaking again. “I like it." She took his hand and shoo kit in greeting.

"So Dante, what brings you here today?†Azazel was mildly curious as to what would draw a youngster indoors when there was much adventuring to be had.

Dante chuckled when he heard the woman's remark about her relationship with the bar. He always thought that happy drunks were an exceptionally funny breed of human.

"Well, I haven't done much adventuring; in fact, I'm quite the noob. I really haven't made much progress past the first floor and I've even refrained from involving myself in combat. So the only option I had was to explore, and that's what I've been doing, just wandering the Town of Beginnings!"

It was true, Dante was a bit of a noob. He didn't fancy the idea of venturing out on his own into combat and ending up dead by some high-level mob. If he was going to be starting any "dangerous" adventuring, he definitely was going to want someone watching out for him. Without adventure, the teenage boy really had no other place to be except for putting himself into the field and out of safety's net.

"Like I said... I kinda' just stumbled accross this bar, and I guess since I've never had an experience like this in the real world I might as well give it a shot now!" Dante blushed after his remark, feeling stupid and a little bit childish, then scratched behind his ear in a somewhat uncomfortable manner in waiting for the woman's reply to his churlish reason for being in that very bar.

Anna frowned. A few weeks ago she was like this young man, too afraid to leave. It was a shame because beyond the walls of the Town of Beginnings was a truly amazing world. “Do you ever plan on leaving here?†She asked the young man curiously. If he was interested, then she would gladly show him the ropes. She couldn’t just sit back and watch others squander the amazing chance for adventure they’d all been given.

Many more beers were produced by the barkeep. “Took you long enough,†she complained. The barkeep snorted some reply at her, money was exchanged, and he left the table. Anna grabbed a mug and slid it across the table to the young man across from her. “Well whatever the reason, at least enjoy it. Drink up!†She told him as she took up the nearest full mug.

â€œCheers!†she said and then proceeded to down the drink.

It was true, Dante did feel the need that he had to get out and explore. Sitting around the starting city would be of no use to the other players if he was just a useless avatar taking up space. And what better time to go exploring than with a high level player like this one.

"I wanna get out of here and help clear the game," Dante said loudly as people in the bar turned and looked at him.

They all went back to their business and Dante said in a more hushed tone, "I would appreciate your help as I think I'll be needing it, we might as well get going!"

He was so excited about learning to become a stronger player so he could help and support others on the battlefield.

Anna smiled at the boy’s response. It was not the first time she’d hear some adorable unarmored noob gush over how they wanted to get to the frontlines and start clearing the games. The youth were totally cute with their naïve romantic notions of heroism. She laughed as he attracted the attention of other patrons who gave him funny looks. “First concentrate on leaving this floor, then go from there.†She laughed and drank down another beer.

He spoke again and told her he’d need her help. She raised an eyebrow and set her mug down. “What makes you think I would?†she asked him curiously before laughing again. “I’ll tell you what. I’ll answer anything you want to know right now and help you out. The woman cracked a smile remembering it wasn’t all that long ago that she sat here with Vastor doing the very same thing. Zaz sat back and wondered where the adorable ginger had disappeared to. It’d been at least a month since she last saw him.

Filled with a little embarrassment from her laughter filled remarks, Dante's face turned a bright red. "Well sorry for assuming.. I didn't mean to force you into anything!"

He shook his head and scratched his neck nervously. She did say she would answer my questions at least, Dante thought to himself as he realized any help he could get would be a huge benefit in the least.

"Well where should I level? What are good places to farm for materials? Where can I get some better gear?...."

Dante swarmed her with questions quickly and loudly. He was just so anxious to learn more about this incredible RPG. Also, he had to prepare himself to become much better if he was going to protect himself and his friends. Any advice from an experienced player like Zaz would be advise well worth taking.

“You didn’t if I didn’t want to I wouldn’t have asked,†she said assuring the boy she was not feeling pressed to help, because Anna never felt pressed to do anything she didn’t want to do. No sooner than she had agreed to answer his questions, did the tumble from his lips.

“Slow down, slow down!†Anna said and laughed at his enthusiasm.

“Ummm being new, the best place to start is with boars. They’re your best bet for materials, col and experience. Then move on to wolves. Never gather mats unless you absolutely have to; it takes longer than killing mobs that may have what you need. Your information broker will be your best friend AND always read the updates to that book you got from the higher levels. That has all the information you need to know about this place. Check for updated versions every few weeks. As for armor…there’s some quest to help you get some. You should try to find it. What else you got?†She said as she sucked down another mug.

After being reassured that he wasn't being a bother, Dante felt confident in asking more questions that wouldn't bother his new acquaintance. "Well, I do need to know more about the game in general; I really have no idea how combat works or ways to assure my safety, so I guess I should get that covered."

Dante really didn't have prior knowledge to the game, in fact, nobody did. Well, with the very few Beta Testers everybody started off on fairly the same playing field. However, he knew that this was no excuse to be making for not keeping up with the others, after all many other players seemed to be learning just fine. Hopefully his newfound mentor would be able to guide him into becoming more efficient as a player in SAO.

“Well I can’t help with generalities, only specifics. And as for fighting, that can’t be learned sitting your arse in a pub having pints. I d know how to assure your safety though†Anna began to count her rules off on her fingers. “Never hunt alone; never take on mobs stronger than yourself, level and skill up as often as possible. Be smart and make good decisions; this isn’t the place for heroics so don’t think you’re going to saving anyone. Make sure you make friends with a blacksmith and get yourself better weapons and armor as soon as you can.†Anna sat back and tapped her finger to her face in thought.

â€œI think that covers everything.†She said and tossed back another beer before standing. “Right then… why don’t you get off your rear and follow me.†She told the boy.

Dante listened carefully to the lady who seemed to know just so much more about the game than he did. It was kind of crazy, after all, everybody had been playing for the same amount of time, but some players seemed just so much more advanced. At least Dante found one that seemed to be willing to help him, even if she was drunker than a skunk, it is better than NO mentor.

"Alright cool! Where are we going?" Dante inquired. He could tell that Zaz probably wasn't in the best mood to be bombarded by questions, but he was so excited he just couldn't contain his joy. Dante got up and waited to follow in her lead, finally ready for some action.

It’d been many, many weeks since the game started and Anna was surprised to find that there were still those with little to no level at all. Granted, she was like them all but a month ago, but she was a fast study and worked tirelessly to close the gap between herself and other high ranked players. She walked with the young man in tow. He seemed to be rather excited.

“Where are we going? Do you even need to ask?†She smirked. “Isn’t it obvious? I’m going to take you out to the field and either you’ll live, or you’ll die. That my young friend is up to you.†Anna’s smile grew even wider. The chances of him dying on the field with her there were slim, but she wanted to make him a little nervous about what was to come. It was good to get the adrenaline pumping.

“Now tell me, have you even handled your weapon at all yet?†It was a rather loaded question the way she posed it, but she didn’t think the kid would catch on to her salacious humor.

"I have!" Dante let out, "Barely at all, only on a boar or two, but I have" It was true that Dante had little to no experience wielding his weapon in combat, but he knew with the mysterious woman by his side that he would be just fine. "Well, I'm ready for this whenever you are!" Dante shouted excitedly, almost a little too loud. He followed behind the woman and waited to be escorted to wherever the two may be going.

Azazel chuckled as the boy told her that’d he’d handled his spear once or twice. “Good to know,†she said between her giggles. Young people were so easy sometimes. Since you’ve gone at a boar or two I’m going to assume you know the basics to controlling your weapon then.â€

They left through the archway that separated the city from the fields surrounding the area and passed the tree. The one she first she sat under watching her first sunrise outside the safety of the town of beginnings. It seemed so long ago that she’d been there. That day was also the first time she’d vanquished mobs. Zaz smiled and then turned to the boy. “Just a bit further.†she assured him.

Dante had so much excitement building up in the pit of his stomach. Having someone mentor him like this was awesome, his luck was coming around. He followed the woman out of town as he anxiously awaited their encounters with the creatures she would be testing him with. He prepared himself mentally as he began to equip his combat gear and got ready, thinking he couldn't disappoint the woman or let her down. The boy was determined to prove himself and his worth, and now would be the perfect opportunity to do so.

"Okay! Let's go!"

“Alright,†This is far enough,†Anna said spotting a boar nearby.

It was on its own, and no one else was around so this was the perfect spot to get in some training for the newbie. “We’re going to go take out that boar over there. I’ll head in first and get its attention, and while I’ve got it, you try out your big pointy weapon and stab it. Got it?†Yes, Zaz was being very technical this afternoon, thank you very much! That was the only thing she told the boy. It was far easier to show him than it was to try and talk him through anything. She wanted to see what sort of battle instinct he had, if any, and what he could do with it.

Zaz charged in, but the boar spotted her early on. It turned and charged her, trying to swipe at her with its rather large tusks. The woman turned to doge the blow and both she and the boar missed. It landed and turned back to Anna, ready to attack her again.

“Go!†she shouted to Dante who was waiting for his opportunity to move in. All she could do now was watch and wait.

Seeing his chance to strike he wasted no time. He picked up his spear, shifted his feet into a powerful attack stance, and began to charge at the boar screaming. "You're mine!" he let out as he moved closer and closer. He let a powerful sweep of his spear with a force hoping it would connect

It crashed down on the boar and damaged him slightly. This thing was a lot bigger than the ones Dante had encountered before.
