[SP - F4] Monster Hunter: Hunting Monsters [COMPLETE]

Recommended Posts

Eager as ever to jump right back into the action after a few days of rest, Takao had made the rather interesting decision to head to the fourth floor. The bitter cold whipped against him as soon as the teleporter dropped him off on the pad, eliciting a sudden shudder. It was a bit like walking into an air conditioned room after spending a day out in the hot sun, only the air conditioner was just a little too good at it's job. Takao reached for his collar and tugged it close around his neck, the soft fur provided only an absolutely minuscule amount of warmth. Even the smallest bit of comfort was well received in the cold. As the teenager started walking from the town of Snowfrost into the frozen wilderness, he began to notice a change. Spending long times in particular environments seemed to trigger his Â« Survival » skill, and although the cold was still unpleasant, it wasn't nearly as unbearable as he remembered. The effect was unexpected but given a warm welcome, pun intended.

Snow crunched beneath his boots with each soft step he took. His purpose on this floor was simple. His intention was to spend a good portion of the day grinding monsters for experience, but his main hopes were set on monster drops. Takao wasn't sure where he'd heard it, but apparently some monsters dropped healing items. If Takao could help it, he'd rather save his col, especially with the rumours that player housing might eventually become available. Takao imagined that the inclusion of player housing probably meant that they were intended to be stuck in the game for a while. He shook his head and cleared his thoughts; he could think about that another time. For now, it was about time to acquire some much needed items.

A deep toned cry came from deeper in the snow covered forest Takao was walking in. It didn't sound like a cry of distress, but the call itself was incredibly foreign sounding, as if it were made by combining several different animal calls. Takao's research on the fourth floor was very brief and didn't explain much about the fauna, much to his dismay. He knew of a few creatures that lurked in the snowy tundra, but his education on their parameters, attack patterns, exact locations, and general aggressiveness toward players was limited. Going in blind was never a good plan, but if Takao's aspirations to get to the front lines were to come to fruition, then he'd be confronted with that discomfort much more often than he ever would on the lower floors. Floating around from floor to floor to grind away whenever he felt like was a luxury afforded to him by the people on the vanguard, and although he took advantage of the luxury, the traits of a freeloader did not describe him well in the slightest. Even now as he hunted, he was slowly working his way up toward the top.

Takao approached a clearing in the forest and positioned himself low to the ground. His clothing did little to help him in the way of camouflage, but ultimately didn't matter much as the beast had turned its back to him long before he arrived. Deciding it was best to hang back a moment and watch the beast gave Takao the opportunity to examine it further. It was large and possibly stood at two and a half meters at the shoulder, the exact height difficult to discern from a distance. It seemed to have three different lengths of fur on various parts of its body: The hind legs had the shortest fur, coloured a grey-green colour, the body had slightly longer fur that covered the sides of the large hoofed beast's face and snout, and the spine had a long line of dark brown fur that ran down the top of the beast's head.

As it turned and wandered a bit to the left, he noticed two large and sharp looking horns adorned either side of its scalp. Perhaps the most important feature to notice was the glowing red eyes, which made him exhale a sigh.

"It's hostile then, likely aggressive even though it looks herbivorous..." The words with which he spoke to himself were done so softly, perhaps even carrying the slightest hints of dejection. "Main attack patterns are most likely to be charging for body slams or horn piercing, or kicking with its hind legs." Takao noted that the front legs appeared larger than the back, but had no doubt either end of the beast was likely to inflict hefty damage. Takao reached upward and over his shoulder to grip the handle of his sword, his ease with doing such seemed like he instinctively knew where the blade was. The metal slid free of its protective housing after a long, slow draw, limiting the sound that came from the two materials colliding.

Takao held his sword level with the undisturbed snow beside him as he watched the beast. He could see the faint outline of its health bar and counted only one. "Alright, so it's not a field boss." He muttered to himself, his voice a hushed whisper drowned out by the rustling of the forest canopy at the hands of distant winds. Takao slowly worked out a plan of attack in his head, every little gear turning and working through how he would approach felling the beast. This hunting trip of his had an underlying motive, another goal behind his desire to level up and acquire items. Boss fights were, more often than not, a mystery to the first searching parties. When first fighting a boss, its attack patterns were also unknown. Takao didn't know the exact specifics when it came to the survival rate of the people who first fought the floor bosses, but an uncharacteristically pessimistic thought crossed his mind. Outside of his deep thoughts, the beast continued to saunter around without purpose, never leaving the flat forest clearing. It had wandered close to Takao, but he took cover behind a tree to sustain his being hidden.

When the beast made its second pass around his edge of the clearing, Takao prepared himself to strike. He raised his blade and hovered the edge just an inch over his shoulders. The low hum went undetected by the monster, as did the accompanying glow that encased his sword. He'd caught a glimpse of the beast's name and suppressed a snort. "Manmosu, huh? Guess they romanized everything. Doesn't look much like a mammoth though, I don't think..." He muttered to himself as he prepared to strike. The beast, now known to him as "Manmosu", unknowingly turned its back to him and offered a perfect opportunity to attack. Ever the opportunist, Takao took advantage of the beast's unknowing and jumped up. He used the tree to vault off of, and swung his leg over his body quickly to flip himself upside down just over the Manmosu. It didn't have the opportunity to look in his direction, much less prepare a counter attack by the time Takao's blade sank through its long back fur and into the meaty, digital flesh beneath. A chunk of its health dropped from its bar, approximately one fourth of its total from the fleeting glance Takao managed on his way down. After his slash connected, he completed the flip, and landed with practiced grace on his right foot. Immediately after landing, he tensed his leg and pushed off the ground again, preforming a single hand spring to evade the Manmosu's attempt to retaliate.

"Alright big guy." Takao's voice taunted the beast as he landed on both feet, sliding into a stance immediately upon landing. "Let's dance."

The power of the beast's guttural, foreign sounding roar was surprising enough to give Takao a moment's pause. His eyes widened and eyebrows rose. The roar was substantially different from the calls he'd heard earlier, but the similarities were present enough for him to know that this beast was the one it came from. The sudden change was unexpected and, quite frankly, not appreciated. The Manmosu lifted its hind legs a meter off the ground and slammed them down an instant later, then kicked at the snow in preparation to charge. The Manmosu's hind legs tensed for barely a second before it was off, barreling toward Takao with terrifying ferocity and resolve. Takao slid his feet apart and readied himself to dodge when the beast came near. At the same time he prepared a sword art, his humming blade adopted a pale green aura to it as he awaited the beast's arrival.

It was faster than he was anticipating it to be, but not fast enough to leave him unprepared. The sheer force of its weight crashing into the ground with each thunderous step it took threatened to throw him off balance, if his balance wasn't already impressive thanks to his skills. The Manmosu lowered its head and prepared to headbutt him, its intention was undoubtedly to skewer him with those menacing horns. But Takao didn't seem to keen on that idea, in fact, he didn't seem even the least bit interested! He jumped and ducked into a roll in the direction of his aggressor, narrowly passing the Manmosu's side. His right foot extended to slow his momentum while his left tensed and pushed deep into the snow. He leapt forward and thrust his blade forward to slice away a nice chunk of the Manmosu's health. Takao landed on his right foot beside the Manmosu's face and pushed off with both his legs before he could be tackled. A single hand spring had granted him much needed distance from the beast, and the two readied their next attacks.

A quick glance to the Manmosu's health bar informed Takao of how close it was to death. It was below the halfway point and had fallen behind the orange colour threshold. Two hits wasn't enough to deal an impressive amount of damage, especially while he was only using the Impravidor, and without a numerical value to compare the beast's health to his own he could only assume it was quite low overall. Takao couldn't imagine himself getting much from the beast in the way of items, unless a stroke of luck graced him with good fortune, but in these types of games such an occurrence was rare and unreliable. He expected to be going through quite a few of these before any worthwhile items showed up. Despite his thoughts roaming to unrelated topics, Takao's attention never wavered or strayed away the fight. He was getting better at multitasking with each passing day, though the knowledge that his life was on the line each time he fought was plenty of motivation to keep his "eyes on the prize", as it were.

Takao was the first to move. He ran to the Manmosu with impressive speed, much faster than the large hulking beast had charged earlier. The powdery snow crunched under his boots and stuck to his pant legs with each heavy step he took to close the distance. The beast followed suit and met him halfway, both sliding to a stop when they were within arms reach of each other. The Manmosu reared back and thrust its head forward for a weighty headbutt. Takao reacted faster and jumped up, his snow covered boots landing softly upon the beast's head before jumping again. He threw the weight of his legs over his head and slashed along the back of the beast as he soared over it, landing flawlessly behind the Manmosu. The cut enticed a loud, pained cry from the beast's maw as its health bar dropped dangerously close to the edge.

The Manmosu's hind legs were close enough to rustle Takao's hair when it raised the limbs and kicked at him. He managed to evade them just barely by ducking and rolling through the snow. The powdery substance clung to the digital fabric of his coat as he tumbled back to his feet, his legs tensing to leap back a few extra steps using his already present momentum. Distance between Takao and his opponent was always an advantage for Takao. His focus was damage and speed, and his combination of light armour and one handed straight swords without a shield enabled him to be such. With distance between him and his opponent, he usually had the advantage. They had to come to him to attack, which gave him the opportunity to prepare his evasion. With the Manmosu's limited and unchanging attack patterns, Takao had very little problem with dodging. He kept his distance, not quite ready to attack again just yet.

Takao used the distance to force the Manmosu to attack him, rather than being the one to attack himself. Fighting the beast had given him enough information to come to a generalization on the beast's strength. It was very easy for him to come to the conclusion that he did not want to be on the receiving end of one of its blows. The charging beast that had Takao in its sights didn't seem to express the same level of caution, though he wasn't particularly sure that damage calculations were included in the monster's learning programs. It was a little unsettling, seeing this beast barreling toward him without even the slightest semblance of fear in its glowing red eyes, but fear wasn't a concept Takao was well acquainted with. It was a rather foreign concept to him, honestly. Not many things frightened him easily, usually they just motivated him. This situation happened to be one of those times.

He eagerly awaited for the Manmosu to get closer, using his energy to identify an opening he could exploit rather than running to meet it in the middle. Every side he looked at seemed to be equally difficult to get to from his stationary position. Perhaps it was his anxiousness that lead him to decide to attack the Manmosu head on. Wherever the idea came from, it was the only thing he could think to stick to, so he did. Takao positioned his blade at his side in a specific way yet kept his eyes forward, listening for the signature hum of an activated sword skill. A spark of lime green flashed in his peripheral vision within the time it took the Manmosu to approach him from where it had started its thunderous charge. He took a single step forward, his right foot coming down hard and crunching the snow beneath the black boot, blade and body both poised and ready to strike. When the beast was finally in his range, he released the sword art and shot forward. His blade sank deep into the beast's head, chipping away the last few points of health that remained until the beast was reduced to scattering shards.

TIME BREAK

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

A day had passed since Takao's excursion in the wintery wonderland of floor four. He'd done a minimal amount of grinding in solitude, but found himself unable to concentrate on the task at hand. After killing a few pesky ice wolves that impeded on his journey back to the quaint town of Snowfrost, he'd found himself having gained a level regardless. He attributed points evenly between strength and speed parameters in the interest of keeping his physical capabilities optimized for his hit and run tactics. Before he'd returned to the Inn to rest for the day, he had passed by a shop that interested him. The logo on the front was of a crowned lion, and the name of the shop reflected its mascot. Upon entering he quickly learned of its purpose as a tailor's shop and spoken to the craftswoman there. Takao had noticed the glance she gave to his guild icon, but didn't put much thought into it. He knew he was in a guild with a player killer, and although Takao wasn't well educated on what sort of reputation he had in the community, it didn't matter much to him. He'd met her first hand and found her to be a pleasant and friendly enough person, if only a little rough around the edges. Takao certainly couldn't find it in himself to fault her for something he didn't even know the full story to, though inversely that didn't mean he was blindly loyal either.

After purchasing a new set of clothes, though it would be better classified as armour, he'd decided to spend the day grinding and test it out. With how he understood it, there was no avoiding damage if he sustained a hit. It would be mitigated down to a certain threshold, but it would never go below that number. He understood how tank characters required large amounts of armour now, or at the very least why they preferred them. Being able to take minimal damage from a powerful monster or even a boss while others dealt damage was an incredible feat, one Takao could never personally see himself attempting. His skills were better suited for speed and damage than bulk and pure brawn. Takao didn't exactly see that as a reason not to at least have a little bit of damage mitigation capabilities.

Said mitigation capabilities were exactly the reason he was back out in the frozen wilderness, trudging through the snow that was nearly halfway up his calves, in search of a monster to test the armour on out. He found one rather quickly, an Â«Ice Wolf» roaming around aimlessly, unaware of his presence. Eager to start testing, Takao reached down and piled some snow into a snowball. He cocked his arm back and the rolled snow began to glow red. When he threw the snowball, it shot forward like a bullet, hitting the tree next to the monster. The action grabbed its attention, as it turned and began to charge at Takao, who reached for the sword on his back but didn't draw it just yet. He let the wolf get close, and when it was within range and lunged at him he caught the monster's jaws with his forearm. His instinct was to wince as digital fangs dug into his arm, but as his eyes examined his health barely go down a tick, he smiled wide with excitement.

"This armour's that good, huh? I may be able to head up to the front lines sooner than I'd thought."

Takao watched the wolf as it bit down harder on his arm, trying to tear away his digital flesh with its digital fangs. Green eyes met fierce glowing red orbs, and a smile born from his confidence and determination grew. While his left arm held the determined and furious canid at bay, preventing further damage to his person, Takao's right arm raised over his shoulder. His gloved hand grasped the handle of his sword, his fingers coiling tightly around the cloth wrapping and pressing up against the guard as he pulled the blade free of it's protective housing. As the razor edge glided across the interior of the scabbard it hissed and rang out into the otherwise quiet wintery forest, the wolf's muffled growls and snarling put aside. In the same motion as drawing his sword out of the scabbard he brought his arm down, cleaving deep into the side of the wolf with ease. It yelped with pain and released its grasp on Takao's left arm, retreating to a safe distance as quickly as its four legs would allow.

Takao gave the blade a confident twirl in his hand as he eyed the wolf carefully, watching its movements for an indication that it intended to pounce again. He knew a fair amount of information in regards to aggressive canine behavior. Stiff and rigid posture were clear, but that was a given. It had already attacked him, after all. Takao's eyes continued their examination, noting the wolf baring its teeth. Another clear indication of hostility, but he was more interested in learning how the canid would telegraph its attacks. The wolf lowered it's posture and tensed his hind legs, actions that Takao immediately recognized as an intention to attack. He raised his blade as the wolf turned into blur of grey and icy blue. He just barely caught it by the fangs with the flat of his blade and pushed it to one side. A swift kick to the side resulted in another yelp as it retreated and began to circle him.

The icy wolf's attack patterns were as predictable as he'd expected for a low level, low floor monster. Observed just from the few reactions of being struck, he determined that the wolf employed similar tactics to himself. It would hit, or at the very least try to, and then retreat after sustaining damage. He wasn't sure what its actual attacks were like, though he was under the assumption that the wolf would try to deal damage over time, considering how it hadn't retreated after succeeding to bite him. Takao mused that they shared the "hit" part of "hit and run" tactics. He readied his sword when the wolf lunged at him the second time. The four legged canid sprinted through the powdery snow with ease, powering through the substance to get to him. Takao kept himself light on his feet and ready to move, and used the wolf's mistake of jumping for him against it. With digital fangs bared, the wolf came close to biting down onto his exposed neck, but failed when Takao moved to the side. His sword snapped forward for a second powerful slash, cleaving deep into the wolf's side as it was unable to react in the air. A second digital wound decorated the monster now, and a fleeting glance to its depleting health gauge suggested that the beast's defeat was imminent.

The wolf still circled Takao after its failed attempts to strike him. It was trying to find a point of weakness, an opportunity to strike, the chance to save itself and take him down instead. From the difference in health, however, the victor of the battle would be evident. Takao saw no reason to act recklessly with haste and charge the beast, so instead he opted to simply follow behind its movements. For each step of his own, the wolf took two, maintaining a safe distance between the two. It quickly became apparent to the monster's learning system that they were just caught in a loop with neither intending to attack. In a sudden fit of aggressive rage, it lashed out and lunged at Takao with digital fangs bared. The beast snarled and growled as it came closer. Takao grasped the handle of his sword's hilt tightly as a habitual smile graced his face. The ice wolf leapt up and turned its head, aiming to capture Takao's neck in his jaws. The blade that pierced the wolf through the chest, tip exiting the other side, prevented such deeds from coming to fruition. He struggled to keep the sword and wolf raised with one hand. The weight couldn't have been lifted soon enough after the beast turned to sparkling polygons and faded into nothingness.

"Well," Takao said as his eyes set upon the three snarling wolves before him. "This is unfortunate."

He scanned over each of the three as they started to surround him. Two of them wouldn't be much of a problem, he'd fought two monsters at once before. But three? This could definitely become a problem. His reach for the sword on his back was deliberately slow. Sudden movements were usually bad when approached by aggressors in any number, much less there of them. He shifted his vision every so often to catch a glimpse of the wolf that had circled behind him, and kept his ears trained on their sounds. His body was tense, yet ready to act. His instincts were telling him that this was a terrifyingly disadvantageous situation, but his mind was telling him it was fine. This was a game, and the last wolf he'd fought could only deal a single point of damage to his health. The armour would be doing him wonders in this fight.

The blade slid free of its protective scabbard. The shrill sound aggravated one of the wolves, the first of the group to have approached him originally. It lunged at him from behind and latched its jaws around his left calf. It didn't hurt, a praise of the game's system he would have to sing at another time, but it still felt like it should. His highly imaginative mind was tricky like that. He dropped to one knee and spun his leg over the wolf, slamming the heel of his boot into its face. It released his leg and found a sword stabbed straight through its torso. He pulled his blade free as the other two wolves lunged after. The first was dodged with a swift shift of his weight, while the other was ducked and tumbled away from. He returned to his feet and prepared to take the offensive. He had a target now, the first wolf that he'd dealt a hefty amount of damage to. whittling down their offense was the best thing to do in this situation. Their advantage was in number only, and Takao had the perfect, sword-shaped remedy for that.

Each of the three wolves took their turns at having a go at Takao. The wolf to attack him first tried to strike him right away, its jaws aimed for Takao's ankles. He evaded swiftly, only to be put in the path of the second wolf. Takao evaded swiftly again, performing a single backward hand spring to put distance between himself and the two wolves that had failed their attacks. The last of the wolves attacked by leaping into the air at him, and he responded with a forward tumble and somersault. Upon exiting the somersault and regaining his footing, he found himself closer to the first wolf. His right foot came down hard and crunched the snow underneath the sole of his foot, his right arm snapping forward before the wolf could react accordingly. The blade sliced into the throat of the wolf and took with it a large chunk of its health gauge. The bar turned red as it barely hovered above the point of complete depletion.

The first wolf retreated with haste after sustaining the considerably amount of damage. It stayed within view, but stalked behind the other two ice wolves as they returned to circling him. Takao spread his lengths to be shoulder width apart and raised his blade at his side. He shuffled his feet to keep his front pointed toward the two wolves while the first wolf was kept in his peripheral vision. The first wolf slipped behind him and lunged for an attack, and the second wolf followed almost immediately afterward. The third lurked in wait, ready to intercept an attempt at evasion. Takao raised his sword to counter, but the appearance of a second assailant made him reconsider. Instead, he forfeited his attack to evade. He swiftly ducked under the first wolf as it lunged and transitioned his movements into a tumble. Both wolves sailed harmlessly over him, and the third wolf's attempted bite was avoided with a simple yet well executed back flip, which brought the much needed distance between the three again.

Fighting three opponents, Takao mused, was not as difficult as he had originally conceived it to be. Of course, it certainly wasn't fun, but his superiority to them in terms of equipment and statistics meant that it was a bit one sided. The first wolf lunged for his left leg. It aimed low, likely to bite his ankle, perhaps to hold him in place for the other wolves to pounce on him. It never got the chance to do so, as Takao was much too quick with his evasiveness. The second wolf leapt at him in a terribly predictable way, which afforded Takao plenty of time to get out of the way after regaining his footing following evading the first wolf. The third wolf, however, was a great deal more crafty than its two brethren. It employed a similar tactic to the first wolf, lurking and stalking while the other two preoccupied him, waiting for an opportunity to strike. It must have seen one, as it latched onto Takao's right forearm and bit down. Only a minuscule amount of Takao's health ticked down from the attack however.

"Sorry buddy, you'll have to do a bit more than that to take me down."

As the battle droned on, Takao found himself growing less and less uncomfortable with the situation at hand. It was instinctual to not enjoy being attacked by three different beings at once - much less murderous creatures that sought out nothing but his death. But here, in the game, the difference between him and the wolves had become very clear. One of his attacks was devastating to them, he estimated that he only needed to hit them thrice before their life would be depleted entirely. They, on the other hand, could only must up one point of damage - or that's all they'd done thus far. Even as the first wolf joined the second and bit down on his ankle, his health gauge barely budged. It would take them twenty... thirty... no, almost forty more attacks like that to bring him down. He huffed out a breath decorated by white mist in the cold air and raised his left hand. He grabbed the wolf that held his arm by the neck and threw it off him, then pivoted on his left heel. His right boot came crashing down on the wolf and pinned it to the ground, which allowed him to drive the blade deep into the wolf's exposed torso. The last of its health was drained from the attack and it disappeared in a harmless explosion of lights. He turned his attention to the other two wolves who were untouched.

Their battle strategy didn't seem to have changed in the slightest, even as one of their numbers fell to his sword. Takao's preparation to strike was interrupted by a snarling wolf's fangs digging into the back of his leg. He grunted and was about to break free of the grip when the other wolf neared him. It lunged while he was grappled by the other wolf, aiming to grab his other leg. Its teeth sank into the armour plating of his shins, preventing it from doing any noticeable damage. He grumbled as the wolves tore at his limbs, trying to bring him down and ultimately failing. Takao raised his blade and plunged it down into the first wolf to bite him, the sword passed by the shoulder blades and chopped off a nice chunk of health.

The wolves' grip persisted in their unrelenting desire to tear his legs off. It didn't particularly hurt, in fact it didn't hurt in the slightest, but the sensation was unsettling. The first of the wolves, the one that had taken the sword through the shoulder blades, hung on to his calf while it pulled. His stats and parameters dwarfed that of the frozen canid's, so he didn't budge. The other wolf did the same, so he figured he'd try prying that one off instead. With his blade freshly pulled from the wolf's partner in crime, Takao poised it above the second wolf and plunged it down. The edge sank deep through white fur and thick hide, dealing a fair amount of damage to the beast. Not as much as his last strike had done, he noticed.

The second wolf to be subjected to Takao's blade seemed much less receptive to the damage. It lost its grip, or rather, released its grip on his leg and quickly retreated. The other seemed absolutely set to hold on to the death. It was an uncharacteristically morbid thought that crossed his mind, but if the wolf wished to leave itself open to damage while trying to tear into his leg like it hadn't eaten for the past two weeks, then Takao would have to act accordingly. He exhaled a warm breath that erupted into a plume of white smoke from his mouth and poised the blade above the wolf again. This time, he grabbed it by the scruff of its neck, and plunged the blade back down into its body. Another hefty chunk of its health was gone, but a minuscule amount remained.

The damage to the wolf seemed to be just the push in the right direction to encourage it to free his leg from its grasp. It yelped and whined in pain before retreating back. Takao was just barely able to lift his leg off the ground and take a step before the other wolf lunged forward and snapped its jaws back around the limb. He winced at the feeling and grunted again, his head turned to look at the wolf. "Aw, c'mon! I can't really taste that good, can I?" He mused at the thought before readying himself to strike, but forfeited the chance to avoid the damaged wolf's attempt to lunge at his neck. He wasn't exactly sure how armour worked in Sword Art Online, and whether or not it was universal damage mitigation or locational, but he didn't exactly want to find out.
