[SP-F1] Newbie Fodder: Not a Slime Edition - Finished!

Recommended Posts

Kalesh took a deep breath as he stood at the invisible line that separated the safe areas from the field that held the monsters and PKers. He had cold feet, silently debating at the threshold whether he should step to the other side and risk his death. He had been standing there at least half an hour already, and it just turned into a circular argument with himself, and it was starting to frustrate him. Finally, he loses the last of his patience and just tosses both arms up into the air and shouts "Screw it, I'm going! I'm going to take the gamble!" he reaches behind himself and draws from his back a simple greatsword, unremarkable in shape and size, just the standard type given to newbies. With his decision made, and his pride forbidding him from backing down, he takes off in a sprint out of the town and into the field, ignoring the stares he got from his little outburst as he held his blade in both hands.

The designers of the game had done a nice job, Kalesh thought to himself while a little out of breath. He had sprinted out a fair distance until he had to take a breather, half leaning against the handle of his blade as he scanned around. The grass moved realistically, he could feel a breeze, and even the sun felt scarily natural. He had never been much of an outdoors guy, but thankfully there didn't seem to be any mosquitoes trying to nip him so he could happily enjoy the environment. In the distance he saw what seemed to be a boar. With his brief rest concluded he tugged his sword out of the ground and started to walk towards the virtual beast, at this point curious how it acted but keeping his weapon ready, just in case.

While observing the boar he found that it acted more or less how he expected. It sniffed around at the dirt below it and seemed to just wander around, as if trying to find food that, to his knowledge, did not exist. He stepped closer a bit at a time to the boar, curiously seeing if it had an aggro range or if it was just a passive mob. Soon Kalesh was standing directly in front of the boar, staring down at the monster. The unprovoked boar seemed to be content in ignoring his presence, making Kalesh laugh a little to himself. It seemed he was a teensy bit safer on this floor than he originally thought!

Kalesh spent a little while following the boar, idly watching the passive creature for a little longer before he came to the natural conclusion of all RPG players. "I am sorry, Piggles." He said to his poor ex-companion "But it's time we did battle for the future of all." He rolls his eyes, adding unnecessary drama to the situation as he lifted his greatsword up and over his head in preparation for a good cleave. Unfortunately his boar friend had other plans. It's AI directing it to step a little to the side, causing Kalesh's strike to instead cut into the dirt next to the boar. Staring down at the blade he makes a long sigh. "This bodes well. Oh, yes indeed. Get all that bad luck out of the way early..."

Having shamed himself enough for the time being he withdraws his blade from the dirt with a good tug, shaking his head in disbelief, trying to shrug it off as his first battle, or the balance of the blade or something else. With his blade lifted, this time to his side, he prepares his second attempt at hitting the weakest enemy in the game, to his knowledge. Suddenly the boar runs forward, as if excitedly discovering a mushroom or whatever boars ate! This put it out of range from Kalesh's blade and made his slash go wide. He nearly lost his weight while swinging the sword, gasping and managing to get his footing back as he looked at the oblivious boar. "Sunnava..."

Now Kalesh was getting annoyed at the boar. If the monster was hostile at least he could say it was dodging, his own personal failures stung far more than anything the boar could do to him. With his blood boiling, so to speak, he charges at the energetic boar with his blade held tight. It took only a moment to close the gap between himself and the boar, and the moment he thought he was in range he swung! His tunnel vision however caused him to overlook a nearby rock. His foot got caught mid step and he landed flat in the dirt, blade sliding off harmlessly away from his hands as he just laid there, stiff as a board for several moments.

He went limp, just letting himself lay face down in the virtual grassy dirt. Despair and embarrassment leading him to just wallow in shame for several minutes, the boar soon taking it upon himself to step over to Kalesh and sniff his hand. He sighed dramatically and pushed himself back up to stand, moving to his sword and lifting it into his hands again. Instead of readying another slash he rested the blunt side of the sword on his shoulder and said "Piggles, you are an opponent I have not the strength nor experience to truly match. May fate be in your favor." Kalesh sighs in defeat and starts walking off with a defeated look on his face. How weak was he if he couldn't even scratch a boar?

While basking in his despair he wandered aimlessly through the fields surrounding the town of beginnings, after about ten minutes he found himself a shaded tree to rest by. He stabbed his greatsword into the ground next to him when he faced away from the tree and sat back, resting against the wood. He shut his eyes and just let the sensations happen. The gentle breeze, the scent of the nature around him, it helped soothe him if only a little. He decided that he would just take a little nap to help him forget the shame he brought to his name, the silver lining being that there was nobody around to witness his failure.

Kalesh napped against the tree for several hours, wasting the day away until it started to become evening. The sky changed color as it would outside most games, and the light all around faded. His eyes opened slowly and looked around, soon realizing he dozed off. He chuckles to himself and pushes himself up and onto his feet, grasping his blade's hand and pulling it from the ground and onto his shoulder, eyes searching the horizon. "I hear monsters get tougher at night... or is that a different RPG? Ugh, either way, if I am going to off any boars it has to be now..." It didn't take long for him to notice a new boar, surely not Piggles himself but one of his many doppelgangers.

Gathering up a little courage he clenches his hand tightly around the handle of his greatsword, taking a deep breath to help calm himself before he charged towards the oblivious and passive creature. He readied his sword for a horizontal slash, entering the closest thing to a stance he could think of while running. It was for naught, as he found himself stumbling just as he swung, the blade missing its mark and dragging across the dirt harmlessly. His left eye twitched slightly at how his first voyage into the world was going for him.

Kalesh let out a frustrated scream and then buried his face into his left hand, making various frustrated grunts and growls before saying to himself "Okay, okay... Maybe it's the weapon, not me." He blinks and starts swiping through menus. He had already set his skill points onto this type of weapon. He groaned angrily and grabbed the sword once again and said "Why! Won't! This! Work!" He was swinging wildly at this point, not bothering with stance, or even looking at the boar, just venting frustration by letting the blade swing willy-nilly.

After his little temper tantrum he looked angrily at the boar and stepped toward it, lifting his weapon haphazardly over himself with one hand, chopping downward with the weight of the blade doing most of the work for him. He didn't even care anymore! The blade cleaved down and through the boar's neck, severing the head as the beast squealed, sending the head rolling before the body and head both shattered into pixel-like crystal things. Blinking in surprise a smile crossed his face. He killed it! He was barely trying, but he killed it! And to top it all off, he got a notice saying he obtained an item from the deal!

Kalesh didn't waste any time going through his inventory and making the item tangible, his sword resting in the dirt. Once materialized he looked it over, it was a helmet for sure, but it seemed to have a red hood resting over it. All in all he thought the design was very nice, and it counted as heavy armor it would seem. Satisfied with looking it over, he lifted it up and rests it over his head, smiling as he looked around and shook his head a bit. It was a perfect fit, of course, the game wouldn't have it any other way! He draws his sword from the ground and rests it onto his shoulder before looking up at the sky to see how much time he had.

While looking to the sky he noticed it was almost night, his time was short it seemed. At the same time though, he was unharmed, and he had only just slept. After gaining some confidence he decides he'd try for one more boar before returning to town for the night. It did not take much searching to find one, they were a common enemy after all. With his blade shifted off of his shoulder he took a long breath to try and compose himself a bit. He thought about how he attacked before, wondering if he could replicate it and get another easy kill, or at least land another hit!

Kalesh went through the motion over and over again in his mind, thinking on it as hard as he could until he finally had himself prepared mentally. He approached towards the boar, blade ready and lifted, but when he swung downward he missed once again. Swinging a greatsword with one arm is not the wisest idea, obviously. He groaned and tried to think about what he did wrong! Slowly however, it dawned on him. "... Maybe I am thinking too much." He was trying to plan out every move he made, like he was some kind of expert or strategist. The one time he acted out of anger and just did what felt natural, he hit his target flawlessly!

This time he didn't hesitate or plan his action through, he simply held his blade tightly and charged his enemy, slashing towards the boar with nothing but brute force and determination to get some small revenge for his past failure. The swing missed as it had before, but he was closer this time, and the blade felt oddly more manageable than it had before. He held the blade tightly in his hands and slowed the momentum of his horizontal swing, gripping his weapon tight as he readied to swing from the other side!

With anger in his heart he clenched his hands around the grip and swing from his left at the boar, not even hoping for a hit anymore, simply letting things play out as they naturally would. All he was focusing on was the fight he was taking part in, and the boar that he was identifying as an enemy. Unfortunately this left him with another failed swing, but no actual disappointment, only the preparation for the next slash. No point dwelling on if it missed or hit, he probably would not have that kind of luxury in a real fight, so he took it on himself to just keep pressing on until he gained some semblance of skill!

With his second right handed slash ready he kept his eyes glued to the oblivious and uncaring boar's neck. His hands had not loosened their grip on the sword, locked in a death grip as he swung the heavy blade for the third time in a row. Another swing, another miss. He promised to himself one more try, one more cut at the boar before he walked away and never spoke of today to anybody, even on his deathbed he'd never confess the events that had transpired on this day, no matter how inexperienced with a blade he was.

After slowing the momentum of his third swing to a stop he pointed the greatsword's tip towards the boar and lunged as if planning to skewer it, not thinking his actions through and not caring that he wasn't. All that really mattered was ending this fight and going back to lazing off for a good long while after all this hard exercise! As if answering his desire to end the beast, the stab went deep into where he imagined a boar's heart might be, the beast squealing from the damage but unable to retaliate before it shattered apart as the previous one had. Kalesh let the blade rest against the ground as he panted, a smile crossing his face as he says "Fiiiiiinally!" In a nice loud yell. He flipped the empty space the bird and promptly lifted his blade to rest on his shoulder before he started jogging back to town so he could beat the night.

Kalesh thankfully hadn't wandered too far off from the town of beginnings, so he was able to arrive with a little time to spare. He happily unequipped his helmet and sword, letting them rest their weight in his inventory a he strolled through town with a bittersweet look on his face. He at least managed to prove to himself he was not useless, but he was probably of no help to anyone at his current strength or skill. He would need to head out more often and for longer to have any hope of catching up to anyone this late in the game. Those were thoughts for another time though, for now he simply headed to a tavern he enjoyed staying at. He made the quick transaction for a room and eagerly stepped upstairs so he could get some relaxation. The nap from earlier didn't count!
