«Earning a Living» [SP-F1] Following In His Footsteps (Complete!)

Recommended Posts

Endilix had spent quite a lot of time looking for his brother, and evening was starting to fall on the city yet again, with no results. Endilix wasn't even sure his brother was still alive at this point. He sighed to himself. I shouldn't think things like that. It'd be my fault, if he was dead.

Endilix hadn't spent much time actually doing anything but searching for the city and hoping to come across his brother, and he supposed that maybe tonight was the night he started to walk down the road to actually performing a profession. Maybe he'll come to my shop? he thought to himself as he wandered towards the gates. Endilix supposed that was the best bet. He huffed and rolled his shoulders. He had seen enough cooks to know how to make a few basic things. He was ready to learn. He was ready to find his brother and save the world, one recipe at a time.

Looking For Food (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30269
  • LD: 11 (Failure)

As Endilix walked out of the gates, he considered what he actually wanted to make as a cook. That's when it hit him. There were three things he had ever been able to successfully make in his life. Cereal, toast, and sandwiches. Anything else was usually either horribly burnt, or completely under cooked. The under cooked food always ended up in horribly burnt as Endilix tried to salvage the meal. Endilix sighed to himself as he looked around for something that might actually be used in a recipe.

What am I even looking for again?

What Makes Good Food? (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30272
  • LD: 7 (Failure)

Endilix started walking up a hill as the sun was halfway over the horizon. It was almost dark, and for the first time, Endilix was outside the city. He wasn't sure if the monsters got more dangerous at night, but a part of him didn't even care. So what if they did? He'd fight them off. He thumped his chest and looked around. As it turned out, a lot of the monsters appeared to be sleeping at night. "I suppose boars aren't really a nocturnal creature. That makes sense," he muttered to himself. He looked around the hill he was on, and at the nearby hills.

I still have no idea what I'm even looking for...

Jogging the Memory (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30274
  • LD: 11 (Failure)

Endilix started to run up and down the hills as he searched for anything that might be useful to make food with. He ran past boars, nests, baby boars, grass... but nothing stuck out at him. Endilix certainly thought he could take out some boars, but he was also a bit worried. He didn't want to muck something up as inexperienced as he was and end up getting gored to death. Is that how death worked in this game? It was an MMO. He had never actually watched many people do combat. Emerath was always better at guiding him through how to play these games. He felt so lost without his brother around.

Thinking of Recipes (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30275
  • LD: 11 (Failure)

Endilix was having so much trouble finding anything that his mind was starting to wander as he jogged across the countryside. Endilix thought he might try thinking of some recipes. Maybe knowing what recipes to cook would give him ideas. There was one thing Endilix really liked, and that was drinks. Endilix began to wonder if cooks could be bartenders. Bartenders are technically cooks. They "cook" drinks. And since this is before the days of espresso machines, maybe people need a good cook to make simple commodities like coffee. But coffee requires coffee beans.

Endilix continued to scan aroundI don't actually see any trees at all in this hilly area... no coffee then.

Tea is a Drink (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30276
  • LD: 13 (Failure)

So coffee was out. That was ok, Endilix could still make drinks. He considered other possibilities. Tea was a good drink option. Tea leaves were just hard to find, and even harder to spot while jogging around. For all Endilix knew he had probably run past some, and maybe even crushed a few. Maybe if he slowed down a bit he'd find some tea leaves. Endilix slowed is jogging to a walk, and started to look down at the ground for anything that stuck out as not grass.

The Hunt for Tea (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30277
  • LD: 7 (Failure)

Endilix scanned the ground as he walked, but all he saw was grass. There wasn't even anything interesting about the grass. It was all textured pretty much the same. And this led to Endilix even wondering if virtual grass grew or if it always stayed the same. This led to a whole string of thoughts and before Endilix knew it, he had forgotten what he was even looking for again. He poked his forehead as he walked and finally after a few minutes it came back to him. "Oh right, tea!" he said to himself. But Endilix still had no luck actually finding any.

Tea Leaves (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30526
  • LD: 16 (+1 Crafting Mat)

Endilix was wandering around still. He hadn't actually been running for quite a while, since that was just growing tiresome and he wasn't sure if it could be even considered exercise in a game like this. It hadn't mattered anyway. There was nothing in the way of tea leaves that he could find. But wait, what was that long green plant growing out of the ground? Could that? Endilix asked himself as he ran over to it. He examined it and pulled one of the leaves off, taking a closer look. "Tea Leaf: Can be used to create a delicious drink." It was! Endilix happily scooped up a bunch of the material.

More Leaves? (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30550
  • LD: 5 (Failure)

Endilix was hopeful that he would find more leaves in the area he was in, since it had taken him practically the entire evening just to find one plant. He was hopeful it was something that was just localized to certain areas, but as it turns out there were no other leaves in the area whatsoever. Endilix sighed as he rooted around in the grass, but there wasn't even so much as a hint of more leaves. He shook his head and started to jog off in another direction. If it's that rare, I probably have to go a ways before I can find anymore.

Late Night Distractions (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30551
  • LD: 6 (Failure)

Endilix continued to jog through the hills until he came across a large patch of dirt that had no grass on it. That's odd, Endilix thought to himself as he jogged in place next to it. He looked it over, in wonderment for a moment. Did another player dig this up? Maybe... Endilix stopped jogging and took a knee next to the patch of dirt. Maybe there's something hidden here. He quickly began to dig down into the dirt to see.

Digging Deeper (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30552
  • LD: 8

Endilix continued to dig, deeper and deeper. Someone had to have put something here. There's no other reason to dig into the dirt. The deeper Endilix went into the hole, the more his curiosity mounted. If he was lucky, he'd find something of use while he was down here, but a part of him doubted that. If he was even luckier, he'd find the hidden treasure that some player had so poorly tried to hide. I figured that whoever left whatever was here must have done so in a rush to not have even tried to cover the hole with grass or something. He would find whatever it was!

Endilix vs. Giant Earthworm

  • ID: 30554
  • BD: 9 (Critical Success) +1 DMG
  • MD: 1 (Critical Failure)

Endilix had been digging for what felt like an hour at this point. He had dug the hole around him quite deep, and quite wide, but had still not found the buried treasure. When he realized that he was standing in a hole about chest deep, that was fairly wide around him, he thought it might about have been time to call it quits. He had turned to climb out of the hole when he heard the dirt stirring behind him. His ears pricked up at the sound, and he whirled to see a large pink head come bursting out of the ground. It looked like an earthworm he would have seen back in real life, except five times bigger. Endilix instinctively pulled his war hammer from the straps on his side and looked at the beast.

Suddenly, the worm came lunging at Endilix, with sharp teeth that you never would have seen on any real life earthworm. Endilix made a dive to the side, dodging the blow as the creature tunneled itself into the dirt behind him. Endilix quickly spun around and hefted his war hammer, slamming it down on the creature's tail before it disappeared into the dirt. It gave a muffled scream and writhed around before the tail disappeared into the dirt.

Combat Results:

  • Giant Earthworm: 6/6 -> 3/6
  • Endilix: 11/11

Endilix vs. Giant Earthworm

  • ID: 30556
  • BD: 7 (Success)
  • MD: 1 (Critical Failure)

Endilix circled the hole, not sure where the creature would pop up next. He didn't want to risk climbing out for fear that it would attack him when he tried. He heard the rustling of dirt underneath him, but had no idea where the creature actually was in relation to him. He was waiting for it to come out from below, but instead it came out from behind him from the side of the hole. Endilix did a quick forward roll, but the worm was not deterred by the attempted dodge. It came slithering forward, sharp teeth gleaming in the moonlight.

Endilix quickly hefted his hammer and swung it horizontally at the worm's head, and before the creature could react it was being sent sideways to the floor of the hole. Endilix took a few steps back and watched as the creature writhed and then disappeared into the dirt once more. Endilix let out a grunt and continued to listen for the creature around him.

Combat Results:

  • Giant Earthworm: 3/6 -> 1/6
  • Endilix: 11/11

Endilix vs. Giant Earthworm

  • ID: 30557
  • BD: 8 (Success)
  • MD: 6 (Success)

Endilix continued to circle the hole, but suddenly there was a loud screech. Endilix covered his ears, almost losing the grip on his war hammer in surprise, and then the creature came out directly behind him. It took a good chunk out of Endilix's back as he stumbled forwards with a cry of pain. Endilix growled at the beast and spun around, his hammer flying through the air to crash into the creature. The blow hit so hard that it smashed the creature back into the dirt, and the only proof that the creature was dead was the scream of agony followed by some pixels flowing out of the hole in the dirt where Endilix had made his strike.

Combat Results:

  • Giant Earthworm: 1/6 -> 0/6 Defeated!
  • Endilix: 11/11 -> 10/11

Taking a Breather (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30558
  • LD: 8 (Failure)

Endilix was huffing and puffing from the combat. He sat down in the dirt. He didn't want to sit in the dirt, but he needed to rest after that experience. He was surprised at his own combat prowess, and he hadn't expected his first combat to go as well as it did. But that didn't make it any less frightening. Endilix took a moment to wonder if his brother had been in any harrowing combat situations. He hoped not. He hoped he was just safe. He looked around at the hole around him, hoping to see something useful. A loot window had popped up, and Endilix put the item he got in his inventory before dismissing it.

After a few minutes of resting, Endilix finally stood up again, and made his way out of the hole. He backed away, and surveyed the entire thing. "Nothing," he told himself, "not even a crafting material, no treasure, no nothing. Just an angry worm." Endilix sighed, that was usually his luck though. He shook his head and put the hilt of his war hammer back into the straps on his side as he walked away from the hole.

Berries for Juice (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30560
  • LD: 10 (Failure)

Endilix had decided to take a different route with his gathering. He had been thinking about another drink idea as he walked through the hills at night, and thought that juice would make a good drink idea. And juice made from berries was always a good idea. It wasn't as good as apples, or oranges, but he wasn't sure if he'd find any of those, even in the forest. Endilix had seen quite a few berry bushes in his search for tea, but had actually ignored them to try to find the elusive leaves that he could use to make tea. Endilix was starting to think that was a bad idea, as now he wasn't even seeing any berry bushes either...

Elusive Berry Bushes (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30561
  • LD: 17 (+1 Crafting Mat)

Endilix hadn't really thought about the fact that he was walking towards the forest, but that was indeed where he seemed to be headed. He wasn't sure if it was a good idea. He had heard rumors of dangerous wolves, but he was honestly more focused on finding good food materials than he was on where he was going. He was so focused in fact that he wasn't really paying attention to where he was going, and managed to trip over a bush. The very bush that he was looking for, in fact. Endilix fell face first into the dirt, with a bit of dust flying up into the air around him, as the bush he tripped over rustled angrily in the darkness.

Endilix groaned and rolled onto his side, looking at what had tripped him up. He saw that it was some berries. Strawberries! Endilix's eyes grew wide. These would make a great juice! he thought to himself happily as he gathered the berries up and put them in his inventory.

The Forest is Full of Trees (Out of Combat Gathering)

  • ID: 30562
  • LD: 6 (Failure)

Endilix recovered from his trip quite quickly, and was happy to have a pocket full of berries to make juice with. He made his way into the forest, and it wasn't very long before he came to a realization. There are a lot of trees here. What if I get lost? He had a bit of a panic attack before looking around and seeing that he already didn't really have any idea where he was, and he had only just gotten into the forest. Bad idea, bad idea, bad idea! he was thinking as he made his way back to what he thought was out of the forest. It wasn't, and Endilix only managed to get himself more lost.

Endilix vs. Wolf

  • ID: 30563
  • BD: 8 (Success)
  • MD: 8 (Success)

Endilix was so sure that he was going in the right direction that he just kept going. He was determined that this was the right way and nothing would deter him. That was when he heard rustling nearby. He stopped immediately. That wasn't me. he thought to himself as he pulled his war hammer from its straps. He heard the rustling again, closer. Taking no chances, Endilix took a swing at a nearby shrub. The swing was underhanded, and went crashing into the shrub. There was a loud yelp and Endilix felt a jolt through his arm as the head of his hammer connected with something.

A wolf went flying through the air, out of the shrub, and hit the ground hard. It was fast though, as it jumped to its feet, the large red mark on its face fading away quickly as it lunged forward, fangs and eyes glowing bright in the moonlight. The wolf latched onto Endilix's free arm and Endilix gave his own cry of pain as he struggled with the wolf.

Combat Results:

  • Endilix: 11/11 -> 10/11
  • Wolf: 6/6 -> 4/6

Endilix vs. Wolf

  • ID: 30564
  • BD: 3 (Failure)
  • MD: 5 (Failure)

Endilix struggled with the wolf for quite some time, its teeth trying to dig into his arm, but he wasn't letting it. Finally, Endilix grabbed the wolf by the muzzle and squeezed hard enough to make the creature let go. He kicked the creature away and it landed deftly on its feet, before lunging forward once more. This time, Endilix was ready as he danced to the side. Endilix attempted to make his own strike, but the wolf was too fast for the heavy war hammer. Endilix gave a small curse as the two combatants glared at each other.

Combat Results:

  • Endilix: 10/11
  • Wolf: 4/6
