[SP - F2] License to Quill

Recommended Posts

If porcupines in the game were anything like how they were in real life, Seul was in for some trouble. He heaved a heavy sigh as he wondered just how he got himself into these situations. The lure of the porcupine monsters that wandered the woodlands of the second floor was too great. There were bound to be plenty of quills left lying about around their territory, with which Seul decided would make a fine material to forge a dagger out of. The quills were just as sturdy as any other metal with the same piercing power behind attacks, so crafting a bunch together could yield interesting results. If he could get his hands on a few without dying he'd seek out a blacksmith to forge him his own special weapon.

After a short trek into the woods, he noticed a trail of broken quills along the path. Of course, being broken, there was no way for him to use any of them toward the construction of his dagger. "Why do I always have the cursed luck?" He mumbled while chucking one of the broken quills into the nearby shrubbery. Material never came easily to him as it did with the other players. He could search the entire woods and not find a single quill with how bad his luck was. "If only there was a luck stat in this stupid game."

It's amazing how bad the beast's aim was. While the boy had been crouched down in search of stray quills, a porcupine had rushed him from behind. Its quills extended, ready to impale him, but Seul had been alerted to its presence by the sound of its feet crunching on fallen leaves. He evaded the attack by rolling forward and turning on his heel to face his assailant. "I guess it's playtime?" He teased while pulling up the hood on his new cloak. There was no way he'd allow himself to be taken down by something of such a low level, but after his run in with the kobolds on this floor he kept his dagger at the ready for anything.

The battle had begun. Seul lunged forward with his dagger in a backhanded grip. The porcupine was faster than he expected though and turned around so that it's spike covered back was facing the boy. He managed twist in midair so that only his leg suffered damage at the quill's wrath. Instead of landing on the porcupine bed, he face planted into the ground beside it and rolled away before it could do anything else. When he got back to his feet, he noticed that the beast had also suffered minor damage and he silently thanked Astro for selling him the cloak.

Now it was his turn to strike! Seul got into the stance to perform his trusty sword art, Side Bite. The dagger adopted its usual blue aura that happened whenever he executed the move and the system took over to propel him past the porcupine's sides with the dagger slashing it open on both accounts. It was enough to finish the battle but it was close. Unfortunately, some of the porcupine's quills were lodged in his arm after the attack, turning him into a human pin cushion. "This is gonna sting tomorrow..." He moaned while plucking out a few and tossing them aside.

Just as the last of the quills were removed the porcupine had advanced on him again. With its back to him, it lunged through the air toward the boy's face. Of course, Seul dodged it by ducking low to the ground and thr monster simply passed over head. "Better luck next time.~" He didn't ereally have room to taunt though. The beast possessed the thorns ability for obvious reasons. Attacking it would be tricky as any successful strike, save for a few, would inflict damage on him as well. He had to wait for the right opportunity.

He wasn't as lucky next time. The porcupine sprang forward yet again and impaled his right leg with its quills. He couldn't help cringe as he watched his leg fill up with the sharp spikes, but the attack had activated the cloak's ability and black thorn sprang from the armor to stick the porcupine. While it suffered damage from the thorns he raised his dagger high before bringing it down into the monster's skull, causing it to burst in to pixels seconds later. "Guess I was more dangerous..."

Wiping the sweat from his brow, he sighed. "This stuff never does get easier, does it?" After a swift inspection for any stray broken quills he plopped down against the trunk of a nearby tree to regain his energy. Fighting certainly didn't feel any easier despite being of a higher level. With his terrible luck he'd always suffer more damage than he felt he should've. What was he doing wrong? Or was there even a right way to go about fighting? Who knew. One thing that was clear though was that fighting seemed to be the only way to get ahead in this world.

Glancing around at his feet was useless as all the fallen quills were broken. None of them even seemed remotely salvageable for a smith to use in crafting his gear. As his energy slowly returned he let his thoughts wander. Aincrad was cruel and unforgiving, sure, but was that really any different from the real world? It was just as easy to perish there as well, if not then he'd say it was probably easier to die in the real world. At least here if you worked hard enough you'd have a fighting chance.

It wasn't clear what he expected would've happened from further inspection of the area  but the results were the same. One would think that in an area filled with porcupines there'd be one stinking quill there for him to [censored]. It was a good thing he didn't start a shop. There wouldn't have been any point since he never seemed to be able to find mats anymore. He banged his heads lightly against the bark of the tree, feeling the forced of it but none of the actual pain that would've occurred in the real world.

It was time for battle once again since another porcupine entered the scene. The monster sent its quills forward only to have them stick to the tree as Seul had rolled off to the side. He drew his dagger and struck the creature with a forward thrust after his blade took on a yellow hue. "Armor Pierce!" The move wasn't particularly strong but it did managed to leave the porcupine stunned which allowed him some time to plan the next move. He was just thankful that there was only one.

With the porcupine stunned he took the chance to execute his signature Side Bite sword art. He shifted his stance so that the dagger would adopt a blue glow. The system took over and sent him past the porcupine in two quick motions that cut the monster open on both sides. He must've scored a critical since only seconds later the monster busted into the pixelated confetti storm and was carried away with the wind. "Well, that was easy." It was true, but the time all was said and done his energy had been spent.

It would seem that daggers were balanced in that they had high damage outputs, restricted by high energy costs. One could deal massive damage in a single turn but have to wait and save their energy up before dealing another devastating move. Being mindful of how much energy one spent in battle would be useful for extended bouts and knowing when to use which move would mean the difference between life and death at the hands of the enemy. Or at the very least that's just how Seul saw things.

Just as he was about to abandon all hope, he found it. The largest quill he could've ever possibly imagined. It was practically larger than his dagger. "It's perfect!" He exclaimed before scooping it up and securing it in his inventory. Only problem was that it was much larger than any of the quills that were  on the porcupines he previously encountered. Could there have been some monstrous, giant porcupine mutant running around somewhere in these woods?

The thought was scary to say the least. Regular sized porcupines were just enough for him to handle, but giant ones? The was no way he'd be dealing with those. At first sight of one he'll turn tail. It wasn't that he was scared, he was just too smart to rush head first into a dangerous situation. At least on his own anyway. There was no telling what could happen and in a game like this, having certainty about one's ability to fend off the monsters that roamed around held as much value as the sword they used.

The attack was fast. But not fast enough. Seul narrowly managed to avoid being impaled by one of the very quills he just found; attached to them was the body of a porcupine that stood almost as tall as the boy himself. Maybe even taller with its spie covered back being counted. Each one was like a sword of its own and he couldn't help but flinch at the thought of being hit by one. "Alright... Keep calm... Just handle it the same as before, no big deal." He said while bringing his dagger up to attack position and eyeing the beast carefully.

It was Seul's turn to attack. He charged with his dagger raised high and stopped short to activate his Side Bite sword art. He rushed past the giant porcupine on both sides, cutting it open as he did and leaving behind giant orange gashes in his wake. The porcupine's needles of course cut him  open as he did but he shook off any damage he received as it was only minor. Or it would've been if the monster hadn't sent even more quills into him after his sword art had finished. Thankfully his cloak returned the favor with its thorns ability.

He wasn't so lucky with his next hit. He managed to fire off another Side Bite before the porcupine could stick him again with its needles, but couldn't help feeling bad at the sight of the quills entering his flesh and in turn his cloaks thorns entering the monster's skin wasn't a pretty sight either. It wasn't a particularly difficult battle, yet he could see how a less equipped player might have had some trouble. "For a monster of a porcupine, you sure aren't that strong!"

Maybe taunting the monster wasn't such a great idea. Without hesitation, it turned and rammed its quill covered back into the boy, giving him more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese. Seul cried out in pain as a couple of the quills had completely ran through him, pinning him to a tree. It was hard to even raise his dagger or move. "Not good... Definitely not good... I'm gonna die if things stay like this..." He groaned while watching the quills push deeper and deeper. Surely this wasn't the end. Though it looked bad, his health had only dropped a couple of points and was still in the green.

He raised his dagger slowly, allowing the small blade to turn blue as he did. "Side Bite!" The execution had to be a little different. Rather than run past the porcupine, he stabbed at each of its sides causing the monster to explode seconds later into pixels. He gasped as the monster's quills left with it and his wounds began to close up slowly. The fight was over and the threat had passed. "That was fun..." He mumbled while sitting up again. He had found his quill, so it was about time to call it a day.
