[PP-F12] Red, White and Blue III (Calrex)

Recommended Posts

"In any case, it's all a bit reminiscent of more primitive times," he began, as he looked once more to the unknown structure. "No central power or authority to be found- outside of Kayaba himself. But other than that, we're closer to being a medieval society than the one we all came from. In a place like this, every decision is backed up by the strength of one's swing- and if not one's own prowess, than that of his brethren." It was by the sword that people like Mari had become so influential- at least, back when the pink-haired woman had been around. And this was by no means a recent trend; he could trace this line of work back to the days of the infamous Argumail, and his Crimson Inquisition. The man had been mad, but when the price of resistance was the hanging threat of la guillotine, his ambitions had largely withstood the will of those unable to fight back. It was only by the hand of Mari that the tyranny of Argumail was finally brought to an end. Not by some higher power had the madman fallen, but the blade of another player.

As the lighting conditions improved, Azide darted his eyes all around the dimly lit structure. "It's a mangrove," he said simply, as his eyes traced the twisted tangle of roots. In the soft light, he could now see that the section he'd hit with his paddle had been one of the many trunks which snaked their way skyward, culminating in a dense canopy which hung overhead the pseudo-island. "They're really quite a beautiful sight, don't you think?" he asked, continuing to stare at the midwater huddle of trees.

Again, he detected the acrid scent of smoke, which this time around had lost all pretense of subtlety. He turned, wondering if the air itself had been set alight, and his eyes widened as they caught sight of something in the horizon. Perhaps he was simply out of it due to the lateness of the night, but for one reason or another, he had not questioned the sudden shift in lightning which had taken place moments before. There, in the distance- clusters of flames burned from atop still waters. Upon closer inspection, he gleamed that each of these sites consisted of mangroves set aflame. In the darkness, the fires raged, holding back the tide of darkness.

"Yeah, it definitely appears to be that way. Enforcement is simply starting a duel, and whoever was stronger emerges as the victor and the one in the right, even it is isn't just. Power seems to be the only determining factor of anything, where what you can do speaks louder than whatever words may leave one's mouth."

Giving a small sigh Calrex looked over, back at the creature Azide had pointed out. It was certainly not something he had seen on the other floors, but was familiar with from other games. Mangroves were a special type of tree that tended to grow near large bodies of water. In some ways they looked a lot like what a tree would look like if it were uprooted.

Looking forward he saw the smoke and flames that were rising from nearby, taking note as he looked over at Azide, "Well, that's certainly a different sight? Should we go take a closer look?"

The flickering flames danced across his retinas, and he reveled in the light they so graciously offered. But at the same time, he found the sight a mesmerizing one- it was difficult to look away. In a way, the hypnotic sensation reminded him of a certain named phenomena- the so called 'call of the void'. In his own case, such a phrase held meaning beyond its original intent, but was no less accurate because of it. With a plop, into the water went the flat of his paddle, followed by roughly a third of the rest of its length. With a dreamy nod, Azide went to work, and began to stroke on one side of the vessel with the expectation that the other player would mirror the action. "It's not something I'd expected to see tonight, to say the least," said Azide. He had to wonder, what was the reason behind this? They were, after all, in the middle of a river- and there had been no clap of thunder or bolt of lightning since he'd first set foot on the twelfth floor. It seemed entirely unlikely that a waterlogged island would spontaneously combust. "In any case, what the heck. I'm feeling up for some adventure tonight," he continued, as another push and pull of the paddle inched their boat further forward.

But if the smoke and the fire had not come from torches and candles alone, then his suspicions had not been simple paranoia after all. How many other times had his intuition been unjustly denied? It felt wrong, in a way, to leave himself to at the mercy of another's actions. For once, he had allowed himself to be guided by the judgement of another, reasoning that it would be both reckless and foolish to contest the man with both Reveal and Night Vision. But he could not deny that the whole experience left him feeling antsy, and even little anxious. It was only logical that he entrust something like this to Calrex- after all, navigation these conditions was more or less his niche. But even then...

As he looked out at the widening body of water, he took note of the ripples which raced away from the center, eventually dispersing somewhere beyond the limits of his vision.

Calrex gave a nod as Azide stated that he would be up for a little bit of exploration in the area. Persisting his <<Reveal>> and <<Night Vision>> techniques he carefully guided the boat as the two continued down the river as he gave a calming breath, continuing the watch the scene out of the corner of his way. From his memory, lightning was fairly uncommon on this floor, only appearing when there was fierce storms, symbolizing an active field boss that was roaming the fields. It was only recently that he had done the <<Lord of the Seas>> quest, as well as the sub-floor boss monster he fought alongside Ssendom. Both creatures wielded abilities that granted lightning to them, which was certainly something to fear.

Looking over he made note of the nervous expression that occasionally came across the brunette's face, giving a friendly smile, although he wasn't sure the young man could see his expression, "Don't worry even if it gets this dark I can still see perfectly fine. It looks like the river continues on for quite a distance still, so we don't have to worry about running aground anytime soon."

As the two rounded yet another bank in the stream the bluenette continued scanning the area, making sure to avoid coming close to the sides of the river. At this point it seemed the river was starting to pick up in speed, the waters starting to move a bit faster, "Looks like we've finally started going a bit downhill. Hopefully this thing holds up."

<<Galvanic Snapper>> [|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||] [|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||] 700/700 HP

Galvanic_Snapper.png
10 Base Damage, Partial Phase (Will always deal at least 20 DMG), Paralysis Immunity (Does not apply to Stun)

The stillest waters run the deepest, or so the old saying goes. From somewhere far below the surface, the Galvanic Snapper emerges with a shriek for the ages, sending an army of shadows scurrying to the safety of the nighttime skies. The creature's colossal jaws creak open, revealing a mouth large enough to elicit a sudden interest in the size of one's watercraft...

Synergy mechanic: During each player's turn, each player's unmodified CD roll will be recorded. If the sum of these two rolls are greater than twelve (12), then the players have successfully managed to remain within range (WR) of the Galvanic Snapper. Otherwise, they are considered out of range (OOR) until the required total is reached. Whether the Galvanic Snapper is considered WR or OOR is determined during its own battle phase.

The Galvanic Snapper's attacks are determined by its position status (WR vs OOR):

Within Range
<<Seaside Whiplash>> (1x6) Multiplier
With a brutal lash of its serpentine tail, the beast slams a single target in a display of pinpoint precision.
*On a BD of 9 or 10, the Galvanic Snapper follows up by thrashing the boat, causing it to spin dizzily. The CD sum for at the end of the round is reduced to zero (0).

Out of Range
<<Lightning Strike>> (2x1) Multiplier + AoE + Burn (4 DMG for 2 rounds)
The Galvanic Snapper propels itself forward, before turning around. It opens its mouth, making the air around it begin to crackle and spark. After a brief moment, creature discharges the buildup of energy in the form of two narrow arcs of electricity, which immediately ignite upon contact.
*If either player is struck by the attack, then the boat is also set alight until the end of the round, reducing each player's CD roll that round by 1.

Enraged State:

If the Galvanic Snapper's health drops to 100 HP or below, it enters an enraged state. In this state, base damage is increased by three (3), the partial phase minimum is increased to twenty-five (25), and the creation's evasion is reduced to negative one (-1).

Galvanic Snapper Theme

---

A slight frown came to his lips as Calrex offered abrupt reassurance. "I appreciate the thought, but I'm not the least bit worried," said Azide, as he continued their steady row. It wasn't so much the insinuation of worry that irked him, but rather that the man had thought it to be the case in the first place. "We're among the strongest in Aincrad, between the two of us. There's hardly any reason for me to worry," he added. It'd been a long, long time since he'd stood helpless in that field- nearly dying to a mere boar. If it hadn't been for the intervention of one Arrekusu Separa, he probably wouldn't have made it far enough to be considering any of this. But these days, he was perfectly capable of looking after himself. It bothered him- that he'd been in any way obvious about his misgivings.

He nodded as the blue-haired man pointed out the change in inclination. By now, the water was running whiter with its newfound vigor, which seemed to only be increasing with every second that passed. Rushing water sprayed in a fine mist in his general direction as it splashed against the blade of his paddle, forcing him to wipe away the damp sheen with the back of his sleeve. As their vessel passed through the burning isles, he gawked at each of them in wonder. What had caused all of this?

The once-gentle breeze shifted from a whisper to a howl, and as he gazed up at the sky, he watched as the moon was swallowed up by angry, sullen clouds. The sky flashed once, nearly blinding him, if it hadn't been for the hand he'd thrown up to block the glaring light. By the time he lowered it, his eyes opened just in time to bare witness to an eruption of water roughly fifty meters ahead of them, followed by a clap of rolling thunder. Smoke bellowed into the air as flames broke out upon the water's surface, and a dart of his eyes revealed the drifting log which had been ignited a short distance from their own canoe.

Azide glanced over his shoulder, finally catching sight of the monster behind it all. The system flashed a single message over the head of the enormous creature:

WARNING!

Calrex looked to see that a gigantic creature had appeared from the murky depths below, cursing under his breath, "Shoot, I thought I was able to keep track of everything. This thing must move fairly fast, as I didn't detect it with my Reveal skill until just now."

Drawing the Grand Blade he rested it at his side, looking to see that the oversized fish was actually out of range of their attacks. Looking over at Azide he gave a nod as he began to row faster in order to try and catch up. Unfortunately, this proved to be no good, as the snapper was too agile in the water for them to keep up.

Standing up in the boat he grasped his sword, keeping his eyes on the movements in the water, "We're going to need to get closer to take this thing out Azide. Hope you're ready for a tough fight."

"Easier said than done," Azide huffed, pulling the oar back into position- now was not the time to fumble it... again. Though Calrex had made a valiant effort, even all the rowing in the world couldn't have saved the mess of a performance which he himself had put on display. Thankfully, the bluenette seemed content not to call him out on it. "It's kind of a shame that I can't really apply anything I know about rowing here," he continued, with a drawn-out sigh. As was the case with swimming, rowing experience was not something which he'd ever been able to add to his resume of skills- he'd always much preferred motorized boats over these hollowed out logs. But even then, that was not to say that he was not familiar with the technique and theory behind it. And at the end of the day, was knowledge not the most important part of execution? "That Kayaba fellow should've put a little more work into these mechanics- I swear we should be moving at least twice as fast as we are now."

After a brief pause to regain his breath, he opened his mouth to bark out another scathing critique of dubious validity- but the sharp words never left his tongue. His eyes widened, and he ducked as low as he could manage as the air above him crackled with a vengeance. For a brief moment, he could have sworn that the entire swamp had been lit as bright as day- if the sun were a bit whiter and bluer, to be exact. Glimpsing over his shoulder, he caught sight of the point with which the bolt had collided: behind them, a small island of mangroves now burned without relent, and he watched as a smoldering branch dipped into the water with a sizzle.

"But screw Kayaba. Let's just make this work so we can catch up to that thing," he said, putting a little more power into each of his strokes. Already, he thought he could feel a bit of an improvement- although considering what he'd managed before, that wasn't exactly saying much.

"Yeah, you've got it."

Calrex set the Grand Blade in front of him as he sat back down in the boat, grabbing his oar as he began to paddle in sync with the man sitting across him. Fighting against the giant fish's wake was certainly putting more strain than it normally would for the two to maneuver through the lake, but it seemed their combined efforts were beginning to pay off as the bluenette saw the creature's electrical body get closer and closer, "Heh, it looks like we're finally getting some luck. Once we get into range, try and stun it Azide. Hopefully that'll keep it from being able to move out of range."

"This battle is seeming more and more like the one Azide, Rebekah, and I undertook when we encountered Ziz. Speaking of which, I wonder if there's a behemoth lurking in the floors somewhere. Nonetheless, best keep focused on this fight."

"Let's just hope when we get close enough it doesn't try to break the boat. We'll be literally be in rough waters if our vessel is taken out."

As he watched the snapper get back into striking range his free hand slowly reached for his sword before wrapping his fingers around the hilt. He gave a calming breath as he focused his senses, preparing to try and take a shot at the creature once Azide make a strike.

"I have to wonder if it's actually intelligent enough to even consider breaking the boat," observed Azide, setting the paddle aside as their canoe pulled up alongside the massive beast. From out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of something snaking its way out of the water, accompanied by the sound of trickling water. With a turn of his head, he watched as the eel-like fish whipped its serpentine tail just to the left of the blue-haired swordsman. Failing to strike its target, the tail-end of the creature hurtled unopposed into the water's surface, sending an eruption of droplets into the air. As the creature had yet to actually land any of its attacks, it was hard to say just how credible of a threat it truly was- but that was not to say that he had any desire to find out.

Azide took hold of a bunch of his soaked hair and wrung it like a damp towel, before shaking loose the droplets which had inevitably clung on. "Stunning it seems like an interesting enough idea," he began, drawing a certain dark-bladed dagger from its sheath. Arms stretched to the side, and knees a bit wobbly, he rose with all the grace and balance of a drunken man. "Just make sure you keep us moving, and we'll find out if your theory has any merit," he continued. A moving canoe was hardly ideal to even be standing up in, let alone attempting a charge- his skill in the latter would be squandered in the current situation.

A raise of his blade triggered the red glow which he had grown to love oh-so-much, and despite the weakness of his footing, the system guided the steel of his knife squarely into the creature's scale-covered flesh. Due to its incredible size and length, he found himself unable to glimpse the Snapper's face at that moment, which lay somewhere up ahead. But to Calrex's credit, the beast's movements slowed to a crawl, and it seemed to stop just short of turning belly-up. It was by the vicious current alone that the massive body continued to move.

Calrex gave a nod as he saw Azide's attack fly forward, inflicting the Stun effect as well as some high damage to the creature. It certainly wasn't a powerful attack, but in this case the goal was to stun the creature, not deal massive damage, "Nice work!"

Giving a calming breath his eyes focused on the creature in front of them before he activated his <<Meteor Break>> Sword Art. The Grand Blade lit alight with a golden glow as he flew forward, initiating his attack with a shoulder tackle that was aided by his <<Charge>> skill as he slammed into the gigantic fish before executing his relentless barrage of slashes, riddling the monster with multiple golden cuts before returning back to the boat.

Sitting back down he picked up his oar and put it into the water, but as he did his eyes widened as he felt the canoe seem to jerk as it got pushed away from the creature, cursing under his breath, "Alright looks like we're playing catchup again."

This had not been the first time that a monster had defied his expectations- after all, he had first witnessed the feat back in their struggle against Ziz. Although it was true that the circumstances had been slightly different, the end result had ultimately been the same. By his own hand, the feathered monstrosity had been taken down a notch, and he'd watched as it'd plummeted to the ground after falling victim to the paralysis-inducing edge of his blade. Just the same, the Galvanic Snapper had been shut down momentarily by a single well-placed Sword Art. But in the case of both the bird and the fish, neither stun nor paralysis seemed to have any effect on them as far as their movement had been concerned.

One moment, the colossal creature had been as stiff as a board, and by the next it had shaken off its condition as if it had been nothing more than a mild inconvenience. It was something to be admired, really, the way they proceeded after setbacks without so much as missing even a single beat. Or, at least, it would be if they were sentient beings rather than a collection of numbers and symbols in a psychopath's server. "Catching up is nothing new for me," he remarked, rowing rather sloppily due to too much time spent gawking at the now-mobile enemy.

The air filled with its now-familiar crackle, and he swore he could feel the ends of his hair sticking up. Again, electricity arced from the creature's gaping mouth as it swiveled its head towards the boat-bound duo. Though the bolt failed to hit either of its targets, it struck the water beside them, causing his vision to fade entirely to white for a brief flash of a moment. By the time he could see again, the surface of the lake sparked all around, and he found himself reluctant to stick even a single finger into it. "I may not know exactly how many skill points you have, Calrex, but I have half a mind to work my way back based off of your health. You've been hard at work these past couple of months, haven't you?"

"Yeah, yeah, I guess I've been going pretty hard at the grind the past few months. I wanted to try and make it to the frontlines as fast as possible to try and assist everyone in getting out of this game. Of course, I guess I've still got some ways to go."

As the flash of lightning ripped past the boat he turned his head away to avoid being blinded by the flash, but the act also prevented him from keeping pace as the boat shook from the two losing their rhythm, "Shoot, well we're definitely still catching up. Alright, we'd best get back to rowing. I can shoulder any incoming blows in the meantime, but we need to get back into striking range if we're going to take this thing down."

Plunging his oar into the still electrified waters Calrex gritted his teeth as he felt his simulated nerves shake for a second from the shock before he managed to get a decent grip back onto his paddle, beginning to row.

"And that's something you certainly won't be doing single-handedly." He ducked his head as another burst of energy was discharged straight from the mouth of the beast, only to see that the creature had grossly overshot once again. Though he didn't care to find out how destructive these rounds really were, he was beginning to doubt that either of them was actually at any significant risk for a first-hand experience such as that one. In fact, it was a little like having a fear of being struck by lightning- possible, but incredibly improbable. And upon second thought, that comparison seemed to be a little too on the nose...

Feeling several thuds against the slender frame of their canoe, he glanced over the tapered, being careful to avoid touching the electrified lake surface. "Oh?" he voiced, a brow arching upward slightly at the sight of several wooden shards embedded into the side of their vessel. Though they quickly shattered, as things tended to do in this world, he figured that the Snapper's most recent attack must have fractured a tree somewhere behind them, effectively creating this shrapnel in the process.

Just another thing he had to keep an eye out for, he thought, taking the oar back into his hands. Resolving to return them into the creature's range, he began to pick up the pace of his paddling. From what he'd observed, a long-ranged attack like that seemed ineffective when they were right up in the face of the beast. Whether he personally liked it or not, the most pragmatic tactic would be get up and personally with their scaly friend.

"Yeah, certainly not! Think we're catching up this time though!"

As Calrex had guessed their small boat was beginning to finally catch up to the fast moving snapper as the two players made their oars move in unison, quickly gaining speed and closing the distance. Keeping his sword at the ready the bluenette gave a calming breath as he gave a nod to his teammate, "I don't think this thing's gone through all of its Stun cooldown just yet, so we'd best focus on hitting it as hard as we can once we get back into range."

"Just what I was thinking," said Azide. As they drifted within reach of the massive creature, he gave a nod to the swordsman before raising himself to his feet once more. Again, the position was an exceedingly precarious one, but he wasn't exactly left with a lot of options when it came to this boat-bound combat. Somehow, this wasn't exactly the sort of scenario he pictured whenever the phrase 'naval warfare' came to mind.

Before long, he found himself locking eyes with the beast itself as the creature managed a turn of its massive head. Or rather, it was a single eye which met his gaze- a glassy, horrible thing which bled into the night with a sickly, glowing light. With a proportion which dwarfed even that of a giant squid, the sight of that beastly orb left him entranced. So entranced, in fact, that he'd hardly noticed the whipping tale which had come so close that the resulting breeze had left his hair sufficiently rustled.

After taking a moment to regain his balance, he shook his head as his fingers steadied around the grip of his weapon. Now was hardly the time to become distracted. Shifting his blade into place, the stance was recognized by the system a mere instant later, cloaking his blade in a shining red. Four times he spun, four times he hit; as the art came to an end, he watched as the creature's health plunged by a generous amount.

"I doubt that this makes a significant difference in our plans," he remarked, shooting a glance at the end of his dagger. He hadn't missed the obvious signs during the assault itself, but even now, sparks crept along the length of the darkened steel. "But it would appear that our friend here is immune to paralysis."

"Immune to paralysis. Well of course that would be our luck wouldn't it?"

As the two got back into range Calrex watched as his brunette teammate leapt forward, unleashing what appeared to be one of his most powerful Sword Arts, "Geezes, that's even more powerful than Meteor Break. Heh, well I guess I didn't focus on damage, so I can't really be jealous."

Activating his own Sword Art <<Meteor Break>> once again he rushed forward as the Grand Blade lit up with a shining golden glow as he unleashed the barrage of tackles and slashes once again, riddling the gigantic snapper with sparkling golden cuts as he leapt back onto the boat, "Looks like it finally slowed enough that we can attack again. Let's see if we can wipe this thing out before it gets a chance to move again."

Giving a calming breath the Ultramarine Knight's grip on his sword handle tightened as he felt his legs moving up and down with the rocking of the boat in order to keep himself upright.
