  1. Tristan looked through his gear, pushing it around as he got the armour first on and put his fairly standard weapon of a spear aside. Hah, it reminded him of the time he used a weapon before major system changes, which allowed him to win a tournament. He had personally himself gone through a few system changes, and since time has gone on while he was away at home, it had changed more. It really made him wonder what was going on in SAO, like if developers were out there still working on it. Surely they should be working on helping them get out? Or maybe it was an AI gone rogue which was continually developing for them. The latter seemed more likely, unless apparently a lot of humans had completely lost their sense of morality. That or the world as put by fictional stories like Battle Royale was coming to light. Well that was a grim thought. He shook his head as he put on his armour, fitting weirdly well as it always did. Heck, his trusty Twinfire Reflector was still here. It'll be a sad day when he no longer has use for it, for it has a strong history with him, ever since Alkor gave it to him.

  2. Tristan decided that his leg was getting a bit sore  with all this kicking, so settled for his shoulder instead. Taking a few steps back, Tristan geared himself up, then ran full pelt into the gate, smashing the gate completely as it was sent flying into the wall with a loud bang. Now there's definitely going to be bandits coming. Well, at least he would be seeing combat again. However he did have to consider that these are Floor 3 mooks so it was likely he could survive them even without armour. However despite that, he still would need his gear for good damage or would be here for far too long, so shook his head and decided to focus on what was ahead, which was getting himself geared up. Especially since he didn't have all the time in the world to sit around like he has been. He had quests to finish.

  3. For what it was worth, it seemed his efforts were showing some fruit with the gate bending, for if it was unmoving, he would be rather embarrassed at his actions. Well, that is if anyone could see him, which there was only bandits. And luckily they were taking their sweet time to get here it seems. Tristan sighed as he felt his leg getting a bit sore from all this kicking, but at least it was not in vain. He stretched his body around, once again putting his weight behind his kick as he gave another kick. This time too, the gate was close to breaking. Sigh, finally. It was taking its sweet time, especially with being rather dull to having to constantly kick a gate. He supposed it was punishment for not having invested in the more "Thief" oriented skills though.

  4. Well. He had to admit, it felt like it stunted his newfound energy to do something with his life for the gate to be a barrier in his progress. Tristan sighed and stroked his chin in thought, maybe wondering if there were easier ways to break the gate. Well, there was indeed the lock and he had heard of players who managed to use their Sneak and Hide or Lockpick to get out. However as noted before, Tristan didn't have such capabilities, so instead would just have to break through the gate eventually. On the plus side, his big pause from doing anything meant there was already a slew of information on the quests which had been shared. Well, no time like the present. Tristan got his leg ready again and gave the gate a swift boot, bending the bars more.

  5. After Tristan had broke the restraints and tossed them aside, he looked around the cell. It was...well, a cell. Dark, damp and not particularly pleasant to hang around with. Either way not particularly a place to stay around in. Tristan saw on the other side of the gate that there was a chest, which was partly open with his gear in it. Well, that made it clear what to do next. Looking by the gaps of the gate, he saw no immediate guards. This gave him the presumption that what he should be doing is breaking the gate, then getting the equipment from the box to escape with, fighting whatever came at him, not far off from the classic <<Bandit Camp>> quest. Simple enough.
Tristan shook his leg around a bit, then dealt a swift booting to the door, but it didn't budge quite yet. Well, it was definitely creaking though and it wasn't enough sound to alert anyone it seems. Plus he had absolutely no lockpicking skills, just his trusty brute force as usual.

  6. The walls were dark. So was the outside. Heck, everything was dark. Why was he here again? Tristan had for the past several years been lost in a daze. His closest comrades in battle were gone. His wife had ran off...somewhere. He was, well, truly alone. He didn't know if there was anyone of the old Azure Brigade still left, since he was the only one who went to the halls where he still lived. It was....well. It was dark time in his mind as well. Maybe he deserved this fate, being randomly kidnapped in something that he assumed was a quest. He sighed quietly to himself, his scars on his face mentally throbbing. They weren't even related to SAO technically when it copied them over from his real life appearances, but there were scars in his heart.

However, Tristan felt that he would have to not be in this stinking place, lest he died from not eating. Wait, could he even die from not eating in SAO? He had...never considered that before. How odd. And it was with that, to which he sighed and cracked his neck, then broke the restraints on him, which were of little to him. This Floor 3 had little to oppose him after all. He felt it was time to also breaks the chains that held him down all these years. To go into the outside world and be something. New? The same? Who knows. Either way, he has a new future ahead of him.

  7. An interesting topic to see while having a glance at the site while on lunch break.

I'd trace it back to some years ago, when I had a nigh epiphany in the world of roleplay, starting with a section on it on the classic Minegarde forums, long dead now but infamous at the time. I did a few roleplay stuff, nothing special, but it lit a spark. From there I had during May 2014 discovered a different RP site, which I used to be on a LOT. I didn't like the rules there much but I made several friends and my writing addiction to roleplay my fantasies practically exploded. I accrued several thousand posts there in the bursts of activity I had, both in long and small posts. However the nature of the place meant while RPs could start easily, they died easily too. I needed longevity and development.

During the summer holiday of 2014, amid stress with job searching having finished school and otherwise wasting my life away playing Destiny and such, I read SAO the light novel, for the anime was famously crap and I wondered what the hype was all about. Meh read, it's basically the famous shitty YA of light novels. But I've always loved making my own stories, and SAO was a great universe to do it in. Lo and behold, I did a google and found this site.

I actually came at a really interesting time as it was relatively close to the arse end of the switch from phpBB to Invision Board. As an more experienced programmer now, I can only dread Erron's job of having to deal with the shitshow that is MySQL, PHP itself not being that awful. MySQL can go die in a fire, all hail the Elephant. Anyhow, a lot of the site in links and guides were broken, but there were a few passionate players and I was super keen to forge my own story. I'll admit, I was quite a cunt about it, but it was fun. I am generally open minded, but I get terribly headstrong sometimes over my own fantasy world ideas and it is terrible of me. But, I had passion and somehow managed to get to be a PST, along with a reasonable tank. The system was frankly slipshod and very easy to exploit, but it was better than the earlier no system, and I know what it's like to make and balance this stuff. However work at the time got really busy and it killed my motivation after a while, so I took a hiatus from the site for I think a year or less, memory is fuzzy.

Wind forward to uh...2015? 2016? I don't even bloody remember anymore. Anyway, I came back, apparently flew completely around some staff explosion, as they sometimes do, and decided to RP again. I got sick of the little change that happened and bulldozed ahead to try and bring more, with mixed success. But as I had most of the time no job and was busy with UK college, which I was sailing through (I got a Distinction in IT Practitioners Level 3 from that 2 year course last year :D), I had energy to RP and did so. Was great fun, many ups and downs, many clashes and so much thinking and stress, but it was great. After a while though, I burned out, a mixture of stuff not really going how I assumed or anticipated it to and a job at the time while in college made me eventually quit again, as I felt I had run the Tristan story through its entire course and done near everything I wanted. Honestly, I'm happy seeing work being still put into the site and how that has all been going.

Now whether I'll return to RP here, I don't know. I'm somewhat unsure where to go with Tristan but really don't have the energy to make a new character. Personality switch may be interesting though. Because of twice now also getting involved in the system, one time wholly revamping it with aid from Zero, I also have a burning curiosity constantly at what is being done under the hood and get messy with it. Alas, I'm not a staff member :P To add to that, my roleplaying has been mostly consumed by regular Thursday and Sunday RL tabletop games such as D&D 4th edition (the most mathy of all D&D but I love it because [censored] Vancian casting from all other D&D), Alternity and Numenera.

That...was more wordy than intended, but hey ho. I hope the site thrives well.

Edit: I feel to an extent this retrospect explanation is also warranted. For what it's worth despite my efforts of trying to make a fairly balanced system at the time, that still adhered as much as possible to the canon, I was at times at colossal cunt or obstinate. I won't reject that and I won't reject that especially in the early game, tanking was indeed quite OP and various other stuff. There were intents for many of this, tanking was actually scaled down from what it could have been due to seriously wonky curves (before reworking) that meant tanking viability fell off at later levels and I had to consider the generally low damage output of tanks too. My solo or not with a DPS threads were sometimes stupid long and tired me the [censored] out eventually because I was getting so bored while stabbing for little damage. I still feel I wish there was better class focus to "not be everything" eventually, but SAO as a canon outright didn't have this for what it's worth and mostly depended on equipment and "What you spent the skill points you had on", see broken Kirito. A lot of time and consideration went into my choices and I wouldn't go back on many of them, but understand also there is so much more I would have done if this forum had automated maths over trying to make it possible to figure out in your head. I'd certainly use percentiles far more for one. I won't apologise for it all as that's dumb and vapid, honesty is key. But I will say, I wish I could have executed it better. There's a lot of things I just wish I had more time to think on and develop. I mean frankly for one, a lot of what I was given to work with before releases was....minimal and many spreadsheets and the like had to be figured out and slaved over to make some sort of coherent sense out of it. In a weird way, I suppose I always wished to be like a Kayaba and not have to focus on the game part of it because I wanted to work on the mechanics so much.

As promised, an album of pictures from when the Tristan and @Flints power couple became RL.
As you can see, fell asleep several times while we watched films or anime. She didn't quite manage ice skating either regardless of how much Yuri on Ice we watched, though I was okay at it and (tried) teaching her. Featuring fast and slow doggos also.

  9. Thought I'd pipe up my opinion while I'm browsing.

Cooldowns were considered but decided too trivial. All you would do is cycle from strongest to weakest until the strongest is available again. So I used energy, inspired by the Vita version of Hollow Fragment. I should note in the PS4:Re Hollow Fragment, this energy use was relegated to only their buff/debuff 'magic' system and SA's put on cooldown, but they also have real time and not turn based combat and sword art chaining so this becomes a whole other matter entirely.

Making the weapon system more...unique between weapons is something I had wanted to do, but I could never figure a way to do it without making the math too complex and non-readable. I'm sure the current team have had the mental epiphany I haven't had though. I think the main issue I had was I'd make it more complex if we were able to automate a lot of the math.

    -snip-

This is what the item tier scaling system was designed for. I eventually ironed out damage and defence on armor and weapons to roughly balance out based on the scaling formulas of enemies too. So what you'll find as a trend is skills mean a lot in early levels, but as you progress, your item tiers overtake in importance. This was what actually the big revamp in mitigation and armor skills I had done did, which before would have fallen horribly late game in terms of defensive capability.

All enemies, including bosses, are scaled based on individual floor level (roughly) based on a template Zero and I conceptualised. So Floor 21 enemies would in fact not be like a sudden train coming your way, but difficulty increase is gradual.

I wonder if those level recommendations were ever adjusted to reflect the SA update. Might be something I'll go through later and check because I love me some math.

They were actually, based off honestly if someone walking in without defence was going to be one shot by the enemy by the new HP/damage scaling or not.

  11. Tristan nodded to Calrex wordlessly, then faced away from everyone as he walked out of the boss room. It was no longer time for him here. He needed to rest. To relax with his wife. To do something else.

The room around him felt suddenly more chilly than before, but he ignored it as he went home.

    (Tristan has left the thread)

  12. Tristan took a deep breath, looking around, then at his hand. It was shaking. He couldn't properly hold onto himself. It was...too much. No. He couldn't do it. Tristan unequipped the weapon and shield, then walking to Calrex and presenting a trade request for the Achilles skill, saying "It has no points into it, but I think it still benefits you the most out of everyone here. I'm sure you won't disappoint in its use.". He smiled and waited for Calrex.

Tristan, all hail the spooky burrito burds.

Thank you for allowing Kiru to be apart of your story, and quite so, dominating the first few months of it. If you look back on our old threads I'm sure you'll see that the both of us and our characters have changed a lot. Tristan went from someone just looking around and playing guitar- practically a hobo, to now the strongest tank on the site. Unfortunately, you won't be here to protect and mitigate all the damage for us in the next boss fight or the next twenty. Tristan I will miss our forty page long conversations that include freaking out about Akame Ga Kiru! and explaining every single rule to me at least three times. (Thanks, I have to re-learn what Sword Arts are.) Tristan, you've created some awesome things for this site, but the best contribution would be you. Your time here will not be forgotten, thanks.

Haha yes indeedy. You need to get yourself Skype again too so we can still talk! XP

Haha no worries, I really enjoyed that RP, it kept me on my toes :D and dont worry, Xion is british too! Plus you still has me on skype and whatnot.

Well, as the person who actually approved my journal in the first place, it's sad to see that you are going. I appreciate everything that you have contributed, and all of the hard work put in (especially my initial bugging you left and right about almost everything XD), plus being an enjoyable person to both RP and chat with. I'm glad you found this site and that it helped you through the low period you were experiencing.

All I can wish is best of luck in RL and your future ventures, and of course you still have my Skype, so feel free to hit me up for a chat every now and then, should you wish to do so :)

And to you too. I'll hand the skill to you in the shop or something.

I'll probably still pop into chat as that's just a bit too much to leave behind, but yeah.

  16. Well, where to start?
I've bXDn debating this for the past week or so.

In the end, I'm happy. I'm happy of all the change I've managed to bring to the site. Happy that I managed to fix a lot of the broken, non-canonical mess that it was. Happy that I kept so many players alive, since my build was solely focused on supporting others. But, I'm also happy that I can safely move on without regret.

I joined SAORPG during a dark time in my life, when very little was going right for me. I had a lot of creative energy and frustration and SAO, something I read at the time, was something while an awful story in my opinion (can't rate progressive, not read it), was a wonderful setting I wanted to emulate. Thus, the top search on google brought me here.
From getting strong, to getting knocked into the ground by an NPC far beyond my strength, to becoming the Twinfire Tank. I don't think I'll ever forget those months, they were the messiest but also some of the most fun, especially with Lessa, Alkor, Kiru and Celesmeh. The first several months were a blast. Alas, the job I started end of 2014 stopped me having time to really do anything, so I decided to go on a break.
Come May last year and I left that job, and again was somewhat aimless and decided to check back in. I won't lie, I was somewhat disappointed in the lack of progression the site had, but apparently some huge mess happened early 2015 which seems to have totally flown by me. Regardless, I was still ridiculously OP with my meticulously planned build (still cannot thank Alkor enough for the shield that defines me to this day) and swept up the site in a blaze alongside Zel as the Sword and Shield of Aincrad. However I couldn't help feel that site progression was stagnant at best and I was determined to change the site.
So, became a PST like I was before. Then I noticed that Daeron had started on Sword Arts, but it never really bore fruit. Thus for a long while I laboured away to make Daerons idea come to fruition, rebuilding the system around it. It has flaws, some of which fixed, but hey ho. Labouring away at that, I was kind of handed GM while implementing the new system. My main goals were to make me not so ridiculous and give DPS something in raw damage, because it was honestly utterly pitiful compared to status/tanking in the very old system. That summer in general at that point and before was fun, but holidays generally are.
Over time I have been working away at the site, kind of putting my own character on a backbench while my thoughts were 80% of the time occupied by stuff for the site and how to improve it. Sometimes I even managed to get it written down and implemented! Either way, I kept myself plenty busy ensuring past things previous staff left unfinished was done and out there and that at the least, the entire system is semi autonomous. I don't care at all (if anything be happy if it's even better) if the staff make a new system from scratch, if anything itd be great as the current one suffers from feature creep due to retaining legacy systems (which aren't even that canon) while building new ones on top. I'm honestly amazed it works as well as it does.
At the current state, I feel like I've done everything I wanted to do. Fix the site to a level which wasn't going to crash within 5 floors and now can continue to 100 (Zero and I made templates for all staff to adhere to the system if they want to get creative). Be a recognised player. Tank for people. Get married. But mainly it's the feeling that I don't regret what I've brought to the site, happy to have changed it and with my own life being busier and requiring more of me, no longer feel like I'm needed here or such.
Now I know several users and I haven't seen eye to eye, but hey ho, we're humans with differing opinions. I won't target anyone for it and just leave on a lighter note.

Also, while I dig at progression early on, I can only thank how much they've also put into the site. I think there just wasn't enough driving force that connected. I'm really happy that Zero and I got that together and blasted through, and that everyone else would have to deal with my terribly ambiguous debating skills and comprehension. Thankful to Shark for dealing with everyone's [censored] and keeping ridiculously calm. I think his patience exceeds mine and that terrifies me...
Anyhow, thank you all for your hard work and putting up with me, even when we debated for hundreds of messages, usually lost in translation. It was all a great fun and I'm honestly happy to provide even more material to create for more staff, so that everyone could have a whack at their own boss, quest or floors (seriously Dom, Floor 13 was rad). Ive given them guidance based on recent boss events, so I trust them. If not, please don't riot or shame them or belittle them, it's disheartening. Offering constructive reasoned criticism and hearing the reasons on both ends works much nicer.

Well, I leave a donation to the Knights of Christ for their alliance with Azure Brigade, they will see this in their thread at some later point. Exceptions are the Blackfyre Cloak which will go to Kiru and the Commandant Pendant which will go to Manta. The other demonics I got from Dom and Zel will be used for the Monster Arena which is in construction for staff to give back to the users. My unique skill will be given to Calrex soon as possible as I believe him to be the best candidate for my skill. Don't harass him about it, I have clarified to it the nerf and the various ways you can bypass it (pssst, bleed...). Kiru and Rebekah, do what you want with AB. I recommend merging into Knights of Christ being allies.

Goodbye folks! Feel free to contact me on Skype as always, some even have me on Facebook.

P.S. Celebrate GURFFF day in the honour of Zel, Dom and I XD

P.S.S This is probably written, deal with it. May be the last time you'll ever read it!

  17. The entire area had exploded with emotion, as one would consider in such an event after so much had happened. Tristan was still in shock, his brain still processing what had occurred. The first which was spoken was that about how this fight will go, which then transpired in terms of the future, along with some flash of the past. Tristan heard what Ariel said and in a voice that sounded like he was far too tired or elsewhere "Yeah, I was in Guardians of Aincrad I think at the time. Or something like that, it was in a time when I was away from the frontlines, but I have heard of the bravery repeated vocally to know of what happened. I heard it was a dangerous fight, but I think it's safe to say we are prepared too...I think? I don't know. I just....I just want this fight over with and done. I'll lead. Yeah, we'll do that...". His voice lacked a lot of the collected coolness and confident nature it usually had, no voice of the man who spoke words he usually thought himself as rather correct. He then remembered his shared friend inventory with Zelrius and Ssendom, which they had since summer time last year between the three of them to ensure ease of using each others items. He quickly checked his non battle ready items and indeed, it was all there. Well, icing on the cyanide cake.

(Doors will open after player reps thingy sorted as aforementioned)

  18.

Splash. Pixels fell apart where Zelrius and Ssendom were. Swords had flown where their bodies once stood. They were....they were....

Heavy breathing resounded through his entire body. His brain wasn't quite managing to process what had occurred, leaving him somewhat dazed. This...was reality right? Well, sort of. They died. They died in the game. But....that means they're dead dead. Fully dead. Ssendom was a friend and fellow commandant. He was someone who was...there? He wasn't really sure how to feel about that death to a greater extent, unsure.

But...Zelrius gone. The only person to witness as many floor boss deaths as he did. The one who was there for so long with him. The sword to his shield, quite literally. The Hero of Aincrad who went through his own troubles. Tristan wanted to see what was wrong with him lately. Now he can't ask that from him, never see what was troubling that poor soul. Never even say goodbye and thanks for all the fish. All....gone. What was he meant to do? Cry? Break down on the spot? Ignore and pretend it never happened? It...it was overwhelming him. He took a deep breath, then found himself staring at the floor, breathing heavily, while a single tear dropped down his eye. What was he meant to do? Well, let's focus on the boss first. There was a boss to fight. No more people can die. No more.

Tristan nodded to Takaos plan, though his head still was somewhat dazed. Right, he'd do what he did everytime. Simple. Yeah, let's do that.

Tristan chuckled and returned the kiss the wife gave, finding her comment about the boss being amusing, who did in fact eventually burn to death. It with it dropped the Bottled Banshee Scream for them, which went into their shared inventory. Was a pretty neat enhancement too, it effectively temporarily gave 1 Paralysis on a weapon. Tristan smiled and held Kita's hand, walking with her both out the cave and the prison together and leaving the boss behind for home. "Well that was a nice day trip I'd say, don't you think?" he said with a smile and kissed her again as they walked.

MD 9, 60 damage received. Healed damage with 72 Holy Blessing. Fighting Spirit and Taunt for 1 Hate respectively. Flame Thorns activated. Burn damage dealt.

Tristan once again watched his wife batter away at the boss. You know, you could really feel the effort of her grandmaster since despite her not getting in hard hits, the boss was being destroyed like nothing by them. He could only smile happy and say "Well you're doing great anyway, so don't worry.". The boss once again attacked in the exact same manner as the previous few times, but it was as futile as ever. In fact, it left the boss for dead. "Well, you can relax now since its about to die. Or you can deal the small finishing blow, your choice.".

I actually, in all honesty do not have a problem with the majority of characters that have Unique Skills as, in the anime and in pretty much anything, game or otherwise, you have to be strong in order to get something special and all the people that have unique skills fit that bill. NOW, the problem is the skills themselves. They are supposed to give you an edge, not a full blown hack to the system. Take a look at the anime and the two main unique skills it brings up.  Duel Wielding and Divine Blade. You get an extra sword with one and you get to attack with a shield(basically). I hear that their was massive favoritism involved in the distribution of the skills and their might have been but, all in all, would the outcome really have been much different otherwise?

Posting. Dear god how I actually HATE this aspect of the forum. I hate that this has happened to everyone at some point or another. They post a topic and either it starts going and so long as it gets done in the day or two and you are set or, and this is the kicker, people forget and it gets pushed back into the annals of oblivion. It would be good if there were more sub-forums to keep things from getting too lost. Have main pinned threads for the towns. Then have threads for different areas and within these you would have the topics that people would make their topics in. And have a single topic for quests that everyone can go to in order to post their quests instead of a clusterfuck of more topics. The last idea may or may not seem logical and I don't know but the mass of new topics daily and having to constantly remind people that there is a topic they need to post back too every-time it gets pushed back past the third or fourth page means there is something wrong.

      Reveal hidden contents

I think that there is also something that needs to be done with people who leave topics while others are in it. I think that not only should they be able to be booted out but they should not get anything from the topic at all. No items, no col, no SP. If you don't put in the work, you shouldn't get anything. The whole sudden change to SP being a players level is also something that I don't understand or like. I don't understand why this was done or who's idea it was but I didn't see anything wrong with the post count system. Nothing really changed for the better. The people that were high level were still high level and the reverse was true for the starting players as they had to go through topic after topic after topic in order to really try and do a quest for a mere 2-3 more points, if that.

As it has already been stated, something needs to be done with the rules overall. Not saying that it is all bad, it is just that I have seen a lot of players with stats that they shouldn't have and that it is a major problem. I can link to a site I was on that had structure and understandable rules that were easy to follow.

I don't have a real problem with the current mods though I do feel that, for the most part and everyone seems to feel this way, that they aren't really ever 'there'. I think that there needs to be basic jobs for all mods but for the most part, the responsibilities need to be rationed out. Because whatever the roles are, they don't really go beyond 'if you see it, do something if you feel like it.'

And the one last thing. Why is Skype Chat still a thing? Why not just have a quick chat on the site? The chat is more for just talking and bulls*itting around so why not just put that on the site anyway? I personally am not a fan of skype and to login to show that I have missed 2435 messages and not being able to do anything until it goes through said cluster is annoying and time wasting, this along with all the problems that have already been stated about the skype chat in the first place. At least with a quick chat on the site, everything would already be set.

Just jumping in to explain some stuff.

Erron changed sub forums because it left the site less fragmented which gives the site better Search Engine Optimisation. He's the one to consult on that.

The level system was changed for 2 reasons. The first is that during the site shift from IPB3 to 4, several users got huge jumps in level due to posts, Calrex for one gained thousands of post count from somewhere no one could figure. Thus many users had levels not representative of what they actually should of had. Secondly it was to discourage to an extent spammy RPing of small posts since post count mattered and to lean more into what is effectively an 'XP' system, so doing quests gets you to high levels quicker.

Topic creators can indeed choose not to give rewards to a user in a topic who say did a single post then nothing else, or quit half way through without sensible reasoning, like say mid quest is bad but mid long party thingy is fine. If users are unsure, consult staff.

Also making notes based on stuff written here for future work. Already currently working on a small patch releasing hopefully tomorrow and there are plans for bigger reviews and how to approach it underway.
