  1. "You do have a plan right Star?"

His expression was neutral but his eyes aflame. "Win," he replied with a thumbs up.

The trio followed him past the gates of Florenthia and back into the wild Forest of the Great Tree. The Monkey King's lethality came from its surprising nature. Locals of Florenthia often said that finding the beast was impossible; but, spend some time in the forest and it would eventually find you. Darkness did not hinder the king, nor did physical obstacles like trees or hills. It was a behemoth built from pure rage, unstoppable if not kept in check.

"I don't have a familiar. It's been on my mind though. My girlfriend wants a hellcat, so I'll probably look for something along the way. Not sure what type though. Sort of hard to choose before you see them."

Ciela rambled and snacked on cucumbers, while Star devoured the croissant she had baked. How she had discovered his love of baked goods was a mystery to him. She had read him like a book.

Like a spontaneous earthquake, the ground began to move. It shook beneath their wobbling bodies, prompting Morningstar into action. He pushed past Ciela and Wulfrin, pulling Sewallus to his side. The armored guard roared as ferociously as the Monkey King itself, drawing aggro for the party. The great ape didn't appear to veer towards Sewallus in particular; it's size made it look like it would trample over them all in the process.

A quick and subtle jab to the chest left the Monkey King completely paralyzed. It crashed to the ground; it would surely leave an indent behind. The sound of the fall echoed through the forest and the world went silent.

  3. Nari's call came from behind him. He turned to rejoin his party, slashing through the remaining Blightbound Monstrosity on the way back. Without the opportunity for a break, two more spawned from its disintegrating body. They writhed as they formed, building into the not-quite-humanoid beings that threatened the fearful NPCs of the floor. Their bodies were crimson, like flesh but with skeletal physiques. Black draped over their bodies, cloaking their horrific appearances. They radiated evil, more so than any of the four horsemen had.

And yet the party cut them down like they were nothing but fodder mobs. Morningstar pulled on the reigns, stopping near Nari. He wondered if Freyd had the capabilities of being cooperative in his current state. "It's not just me, right?" He quietly asked Nari. He made a gesture towards Freyd. "He's off? Not that he isn't as lethal as ever, I've just never seen him so... excited."

  4. The NPC dialogue with Remington was less intriguing than Morningstar recalled, but it had been some time since he had taken the quest. It wasn't impossible that he'd misremembered the chain-smoker's charisma. Sewallus, on the other hand, he remembered quite well. They had fought side by side against the Monkey King during their last escapade; he hoped that they would do so once more.

As they departed from Remington's location, Ciela pulled his attention. "Yeah, years back. I must have below level twenty at the time. Pretty intense quest if you go alone. I found the monkey in a cave, but I've heard he wanders the whole forest. It can be pretty sketchy wandering around, since he can sometimes appear out of no where."

He dug up whatever old memories of the quest he had filed away. "You get a cool sword art from it, though."

A longsword of silver steel glowed, absorbing the sunlight. It made a shink sound as it was unsheathed, beginning to glow green as its wielder swung it around. "You mentioned that this is what you're here for," he spoke directly to Wulfrin.

As they walked, Ciela hooked her leash to Wulfrin.

Morningstar stared for a moment, first at Ciela (who's brain was already deep in a book) and then to her partner, who was visibly blushing. It was not the first time they had done this in front of him, but it was still uncanny to watch. He held at least a little respect for each of them; Ciela for having the confidence to leash herself and Wulfrin for going along with it. It was the sign of a budding relationship. Also, it was hilarious from his perspective.

The frontliners are going to love these two, he thought, internally hysterical.

"Anyway," he continued, relieving his sword of its demonstrative duties, "Sewallus is near the gate. I'll lead you there."

    ***

And near the gate he was. The leader of Florenthia's guard was posted upon a watchtower overlooking the wilderness beyond the walls.

"Sewallus!" Morningstar cupped his hands around his mouth to amplify the sound.

The armored NPC turned, confused. His scowl brightened as he recognized the player. "Morningstar!" he called back.

Sewallus barreled down the tower's ladder, making his way over to greet them. He wore the same heavy armor he always had. The chest piece was covered in small thorn-like spikes, prickly for all that dare to strike him. Metal with the appearance of wood made up the rest of his armor. Roots spiraled his gauntlets and boots like tendrils and his helmet almost masked his identity, covering nearly his entire head. With a strong grip, he met Morningstar's forearm.

    "Morningstar, my old friend!"

    "Looking strong, Sewallus," Morningstar grinned.

"And you, and you! What brings you to Florenthia?"

They let go and Morningstar gestured to his party. "We're going hunting."

The guard's brow rose, invisible beneath his wood like helmet. His eyes widened as he realized what Morningstar was referring to. "Not the Monkey King. Again?"

"Again, after all this time. Tag along?"

The quest prompt updated in the corner of their HUDs. "Of course," Sewallus sighed. "Of course."

(Morningstar consumes Elven Armor Salve - +1 hate to all actions)

  5. Why are you leashed to him? Is he your master?

Morningstar snickered, about as confused as Nymoria was. Even after the leash was explained, he found it so strange that it was difficult to stifle his laughter. It was a strange bunch of players, he thought. The idea of a dungeon was floated, and Morningstar rolled his eyes at it. "Have we forgotten about the last dungeon we cleared, Wulf? I'll tag along if you need help killing mobs but I'd prefer something with a little less... death," he stated plainly.

The crew was funny and they had potential, but in terms of damage output they weren't much. He was pretty sure that the number beside Nymoria's level was a five. They'd get squished by whatever dungeon bosses hung out around Tolbana.

"To be honest, I came here for food. But, I'm happy to eat anywhere if we're switching floors. I'll let you three choose," he shrugged, scrolling through his inventory in search for a light snack. He had a total of one apple left from his last grocery hall. It was red, crunchy, and probably refreshing; but, he decided to save it for another time.

  6. Morningstar could see it.

The sliver of persevering health hung idly by a fraying string. A digit from shifting hues, it mocked them. They stumbled about, calculating and timing their attacks, maximizing sword arts and skills, and tearing down the numbers bit by bit until all they needed was one more attack. And Morningstar could see it so clearly.

The flames that bit at hit his aching skin vanished, although the singe marks on his coat never would. Engulfed by a silver aura, he was freed from their grip; Zandra had taken it on for the both of them.

His steps were slow at first. Methodical. Cerberus had eyes only for Freyd, and when Morningstar realized this, he raised his tempo. He let speed take over, holding back only when he was centimeters from the infernal monster's leftmost head.

He flew, legs kicked back and sword high above his head, and slammed down against Cerberus without a single art.

  8. Morningstar ducked, as ordered, falling into place below Nari's charging form. She clipped all three skyrat raiders with her spear, their wounds deep in its wake. Her damage was light, being a tank, and so Morningstar made up for it with his following strikes.

Two raiders hit the floor, dead. Their bodies disintegrated, leaving one fearful pirate, his chanty far lonelier than it had been before. Anticipating reckless retaliation, Morningstar hid behind the iron wall that was Nari-Lanreth and bided his time. The pirate would make a mistake sooner or later, and they would end him for it.

"Nice hits," Morningstar complimented from behind, peering over her armored shoulder at the remaining foe. "We really should team up more often. Freyd doesn't tank things for me; he just dodges. Way less fun," he smirked hypocritically.

The pirate shouted the last few lines of his sordid sea chanty (Galtean sailors would be horrified to hear it). Morningstar caught that as a sign that the poor mob was about to make what would be its final move.

  10. Events were moving quickly. One second, Morningstar was on his way to a bakery and the next, he was skewering a giant fish named Bertha. Now, the fish was dead and the quest technically complete, aside from the final task of handing it in for their rewards. It was an odd and sudden group he had stumbled his way into, but not an unappealing one.

Nymoria was uncanny. The way her voice (if that's what it was) snuck into his head was almost creepy. The system had a way of weirding Morningstar out. He imagined it was nice for the girl to communicate easily, though.

"Lead the way," he said to Wulfrin, who had mentioned returning to the mayor with his money.

    ***

And the party did just that, meandering through Tolbana together until finally arriving at the Mayor's house. Morningstar rapped on the door. It looked like an expensive place; considering he was the elected leader of a settlement, that wasn't so strange, he supposed. Tolbana was an otherwise humble and discreet place, though.

The mayor opened up, peering out as if surprised to see the motley crew. "Yes?"

"Couldn't get your money, but will this do?" asked Morningstar. He handed over the jawbone of the fish.

The Mayor eyed it dubiously. "Well, yes," he stammers, "I suppose that's a fair trade. Truth be told, I don't quite remember how much we loaned him, anyway." Delicately, with two fingers, Dorian accepted the unusual item. "Uh, alright, that's all, then. Thank you for your help. If you ever need anything in this town, do not hesitate to drop my name. I'm sure that's far more valuable than any monetary reward I could offer you, anyway."

With that, he shut the door.

"A monetary reward would have been nice too."

  11. They switched places, with Morningstar now following Nari through the hull of the ship. More pirates, three this time, appeared in their path. One of them had a peg leg, which Morningstar thought was too on-brand for him. Another grinned at them with a mess of deteriorating teeth. The blonde shuddered at the sight.

It was an awkward space to fight, especially with the sheer number of people involved. The ship was not made for three versus two combat, and they were about to find that out the hard way. Morningstar dashed forwards, clipping the pirate closest to them on the wooden stump of a leg and knocking him over with a yelp and a thud. He disarmed the next with a precise sequence of stabs and slices, aimed specifically at overpowering the man.

The third proved to be too much for Morningstar to handle. Not because he was an overtly powerful pirate, but due to a sudden blast of steam shooting him in the face. A protruding pipe on its last legs had finally broken and the swordsman would have to suffer for it.

  12. Awoken by a tropical bird, Morningstar found himself face-to-face with a direct message from Wulfrin. His presence had been requested on floor eight, specifically at the Great Tree. He yawned, still beneath his light bed sheets, and closed his eyes for a minute longer.

The Monkey King was an old foe of his. He hadn't thought about the beast in years, and yet here it was, back again. He recalled being a lower level than Wulfrin currently was when he attempted the quest; they'd probably be fine without him.

He groaned, rolling over. On the off chance they wouldn't be, he returned a message.

    To: Wulfrin
    From: Morningstar
    Subject: Return to Monkey

    Be there soon.

As it sent, he hopped out of bed, threw on his combat gear and red coat, and wandered off to the nearby teleporter with his breakfast to-go.

"Morning," he said, appearing to the star-crossed lovers. "Oh," he grinned, surprised, "you two found yourself familiars, then? Right on."

His blade materialized at his waist. "So," he checked over his equipment twice, "we're heading to Florenthia first to pickup the quest?"

  13. Ciela was no natural at fishing. Big Bertha fully ignored her attempts at bait, and so she passed it on the the girl Wulfrin had introduced as Nymoria. A good effort was made, but even she wasn't able to catch the fish. She looked disappointed, or maybe it was just general melancholy. Star couldn't tell, but he smiled reassuringly. "No big deal," he said to the group, watching as the red-coated swordsman took the pole.

Who better to catch the fish than the resident fisherman? He pulled and Big Bertha followed the line out of the water and into the air. Morningstar reacted first; years of fighting had made it second nature. His blade materialized in his grip, and he skewered the fish.

"This would make a good dinner," he offered, holding it like a piñata for Ciela to whack. "Be gentle and maybe Petey Larkin'll let us keep her."

  14. Somewhere down the line, the conversation had changed subjects once more. "Have you been to the Endless Caverns?"

"On Ten? Can't say that I have. What's there?"

"Not a ton," Willow said. "Shadow monsters and drakes, mostly. But it's really pretty. There's one area with like, glowing blue trees."

    "Glowing blue trees?"

"Yeah... I don't know how to better explain them," she laughed.

Morningstar tried to recall a similar place but failed miserably. The tenth floor remained totally mysterious to him; he never really went near it. It was dark, gloomy, and quite dangerous if you didn't know your way around. The Endless Caverns, he had heard, were labyrinthian in nature and the other major locations were dreadful in name. He had little interest in an abandoned prison called Tartarus, if he was honest. There were far nicer places to be.

"Oh, oh! What about the shrines in the Labyrinth?" Willow was awfully curious ever since he mentioned he liked to explore.

He shook his head. "Only been to the Labyrinth once. It was sort of an in-and-out type of day. We took down the big titanium guy and then got the hell out. Not my favorite place."

    "Mmm. Who's we?"

"Myself and a friend. Freyd's his name."

"So you do have friends, then?"

Star laughed, and was quickly joined by Willow. "Not really. I can count them with two hands. That's why were here today, yeah?"
