The knights charged together. Morningstar shouted the first location that came to mind and disappeared.
The Trackers Alliance outpost, now a ruined mess, vanished before him.
The chirping of birds filled his ears, and the quiet bubbling of a river. Coral came into view. Obviously his subconscious needed a vacation. He stepped off the teleporter and into the peaceful town. Standing in the street dressed in mangled clothing and covered in deep wounds, he looked like the victim of a horrible accident.
He was left to figure out what to do next. Find Bee? Go back to the guild hall? Reconvene with other frontliners?
A red crystal restored his health to full. He stepped back on the teleporter with his mind made up.
Back in Ilridge, he went to where his guild outpost once stood. An expensive disaster, it had come to be. He also discovered that the knight(s) was/were gone.
On foot, he took the road out of town, and using hints and rumors as his guide, he traveled to Kineallan Parish.
-
By now, it’s tentacular arms had regrown. It poked through the bars of the cage, stretching out to strangle the injured player, but Morningstar lay just out of reach.
A winded cough exited his throat as he gasped for air. As the knight approached, its dead eyes drifted to the Shambler. It held out a hand and touched one of its tentacles. The Shambler began to change.
Morningstar’s eyes grew anxiously. He made a strange, confused sound and scrambled to his feet, picking up his scratched up blade along the way. The Shambler contorted into positions that were even more uncomfortable than usual. It’s body morphed until it looked almost human. Then, the armor grew overtop its newly formed body.
They looked identical. Two Spectral Knights stood in the collapsing Trackers Alliance outpost. Morningstar gripped his sword, frowning. His odds had dropped drastically. If he stayed and defended his base, chances were he didn’t make it out alive.
A crystal appeared in his offhand. His last resort.
-
Blood pixels drifted from Morningstar’s battered body, dispersing in the wet air. He winced, pulling his leg from the rubble of a crumbling building. Rain-soaked hair fell into his eyes as he cleared through rocks and stones to free himself. The knight clambered towards him at a walking pace, as if to taunt him.
Morningstar crawled on all fours, jolting into a sprint when he could find his balance. His leg cried out, a dull burning sensation limited only by pain inhibitors. He ignored it the best he could. The knight was on his tail.
He made it to the guild base first, but the knight was close behind. Morningstar slammed the door behind him but the knight burst through the wall an instant later. Bricks tore apart, scattering across the floor. Rubble arced across the room, pelting Star like hail.
The knight swung at him, missing by at least a foot. Morningstar thought he was in the clear until it splintered, spraying glitched sword particles in every direction.
Okay. So he’s a cheater too?
They danced around the outpost, damaging just about every amenity Morningstar had stocked the place with.
A kick to Morningstar’s gut knocked him to the back wall, next to the Shambler’s cage.
-
Zamek walked ahead of the trackers. He was spry for his old age. How old was he now? 120? 130? He sure looked it. His leathery skin was dark and spotty, from sun exposure no doubt. It aged him tenfold. Realistically, he couldn't have been much older than seventy.
Myst looked tired. It was hard to tell with cats, though. Morningstar always thought they looked tired. He hoped his water would cheer her up. It couldn't have been comfortable under all that fur.
The wind kicked up. Star wondered if a storm was on the way. They happened so frequently in the desert that he wasn't sure whether it was part of the quest or just a random occurrence. They didn't have much choice other than to keep moving, so they did just that. Morningstar would keep an eye out for shelter along the way.
He asked Firefly a question out of the blue. "What's one thing you'd like to see more than anything?"
-
"It's an old superstition. I don't know if I put much weight in it. I think it's biblical, but who knows really," Morningstar shared. "I mean, western buildings tend to renumber the thirteenth floor, but the floor still physically exists. I think it's just become another way for companies to cater to the consumer," he rolled his eyes. Everything was marketing.
A bright wisp danced in the corner of his eye. The floor's spirits weren't exactly what he meant, but it appeared Yue Hua understood this. "Really? I can't say I've been so lucky. I think I've seen ghosts in the game--players who should be dead, I mean. But it's hard to tell what's real and what's Cardinal playing tricks."
The Stygian River was meant to be uncrossable for all but the ferryman. At the cost of an obol, a coin not to be confused with col, he would guide players across the river. It was all rooted in mythology that Morningstar wasn't entirely familiar with. He always meant to try crossing, but he couldn't find an obol for the life of him.
At the edge of the river, they found the lich.
-> TRAVELING: 3/3.
-
A man told him not to trust the traveling gypsy. "She'll steal your soul," he said, before guzzling down whatever vile poison the bartender had on tap. Morningstar didn't believe in souls, and he didn't listen to drunkards. But Warden told him something similar, and he trusted Warden.
"She'll hold you to your debts. Don't deal with her and expect to leave scot-free."
Morningstar never asked what sort of favor she had called in, but only because Warden never offered to tell. He was the quiet type; it was difficult to get anything out of him. He wasn't one for small talk and he didn't overshare. He was mysterious, and Morningstar found that exciting.
Enough about Warden.
The gypsy leaned over the cloth-draped table and placed a small sack in Morningstar's palm. She folded his hands over it with cold fingers. It was heavier than it looked, and filled with seeds he did not recognize. He pulled one from the sack and brough it close to his eyes. "What are these?"
"Familiar food," she said vaguely. Morningstar didn't pry.
"How much col for the bag?"
She snickered. "Col? No, no. Bring back whatever food is left over. No cost for you--not today."
Star tightened the ropes on the sack and pocketed it. He squinted at her, observing her expression. Her lips curled into a sly smirk. Her eyebrows were raised just a little. Her cat-like eyes watched him with amusement.
He left the tent unnerved and peered out into Yomi. The change in setting didn't exactly comfort him. From where he was, he could see the twin dragons looming over the city's gates. One spewed scalding acid from its throat. Something was trying to get in. Something was always trying to get in.
The cherry blossoms were the prettiest part of Yomi. They bloomed year round, unlike their real life counterparts. Aside from them, it was a dead town. There were players and NPCS around--there must have been. But silent streets made him wonder if maybe they had all gone someplace else. Someplace warmer.
He passed quiet shops and quiet inns as he made his way through Yomi, glancing around suspiciously.

THE RIVER
All he could get his hands on was a rowboat. It fits two, but he sits alone, paddling through the dark with a glow stone in his lap. The river is ice cold. When he digs too deep with his paddle and the water kisses his hand, he feels it. It stings a little.
He stops every so often to hold up his light. It’s a strong light; even so, when he looks further than twenty meters in any direction, he’s practically blind.
He heads northbound along the Zero. He’s lost. He hasn’t seen another person since the Treefrog passed him by. His boat was too small; theirs too loud. They hadn’t heard his shouting over the engine’s rumbling, or maybe over their singing.
He isn’t stranded. A teleport crystal is tucked in his pocket. He can leave at any time, if he so wishes. But he doesn’t. Something about the river just feels right.

As I said, Morningstar was engaged. To be MARRIED. He didn't have time for silly little games and mini-boss fights. He had to somehow find an interest in keeping his lawn prim (he lived on a white sand beach) and figure out what R-R-S-P meant (mom always took care of the money). And then there was the whole ring ordeal, and the wedding to plan, and the honeymoon to prepare for, and ohmygod what about kids, should they have kids?, can they have kids?
Breathe, buddy. Breathe. Just give her a kiss and go fight Zandra's weird monsters.
And so he did. A quick peck on the cheek and off he went to pick up a spear.
He couldn't help but wonder where and how Zandra procured these creatures. What kind of an event was this? She had tamed a couple of elementals and then launched them at the players for a bit of fun? And boars and crabs too? How was she funding all of this? Who were her sponsors?

Morningstar winced. The first attack of Ciela's career ended in a miss. Didn't everyone's, though? "Nice try, nice try."
Her white-knuckle grip, the tension in her cheeks. Ciela was annoyed--and justifiably so. Everything was a little more important when you were new. You wanted to leave a good first impression on the other frontliners. You wanted to feel the satisfaction of impacting the outcome of the fight, whether that was through tanking, or healing, or pure damage. You wanted to feel strong.
Morningstar had come to the crippling realization when he first started that the frontlines were rarely that easy. If he hadn't faced a thousand Spectral Knights before then, he would have been just as frustrated.
"Relax. You're doing alright," he smiled in an attempt to reassure Ciela.
Then, he moved in for another attack. His sword cut deep, jetting straight through the knight's unnatural body and touching the air on the other side.

"Hadn't found the time," he said. "But yeah--what Wulfrin said. A not-so-fun little tidbit. We've confirmed that shamblers are people, but we can't say for certain that the others are."
He wanted to add that he was working on it, but truthfully, he thought it was a bust. His makeshift laboratory was in ruins, his captive shambler had been rewritten into a knight, and he was so, so tired.
Quick. 3 seconds before attack. Close eyes. Quick.
Barely more than a blink and it was his go. He darted for the Spectral Knight, collapsing on it alongside his team, and sliced through it precisely. It's arm lopped to the ground, breaking like glass against the rain-soaked earth. A replacement grew back quickly--a benefit that came with its rewrite ability, he guessed. Morningstar moved aside, making way for Ciela. This was his first time seeing her in a real fight. With anticipation, he awaited her move.

He looked upon his enemy and the quest objective made sense.
1/5 Spectral Knights defeated.
“So this is what it’s referring to,” he mumbled, wiping his face clean with a beat up sleeve. The knight dashed quickly and their weapons clashed. It was powerful. The health bars that formed above its head were comparable to a field boss’ and every swing it made hit like a train. Morningstar was fast, and could block them with little trouble, but even still, they hurt.
He dropped low beneath a wide arc, choosing to dodge rather than take the brunt of the attack. He kited backwards, toward the guild hall, where the fighting had lessened. He needed space--lots of it--if he was going to take on a knight by himself. The players around him were occupied with mobs of their own. Could he call on someone from his friends list? Would they make it in time?
He was pretty sure he’d be dead before they arrived, in truth. With his left hand, he typed to Warden.
MORNINGSTAR: could use a shield
There wasn’t time for context, unfortunately. Not a second later, Morningstar was on the ground once more.
-
A tendril hooked itself around Bee’s leg, pulling it out from under her and slamming her to the ground. A muffled gasp escaped her winded lungs as she splashed in the mud. Morningstar reacted quickly, cutting through the shambler’s appendage with no hesitation. He had no time for remorse. Bee’s life was on the line.
He lifted her up, wiping splatters of mud off her scratched face and pushing her on ahead. “We’re almost there. Eyes on the teleporter.”
She was compelled to listen. Her eyes locked on to the archway up ahead, tracing the line of players desperate to get off the floor and take refuge somewhere safer. To all of them, the Town of Beginnings must have sounded like heaven in contrast to Ilridge. Even the strongest players were nervous at the sight of the horde.
From behind, something kicked up waves of mud, splitting through them on its way toward Morningstar.

Morningstar was unfamiliar with the surroundings of Donoghue's. It wasn't an area he had come to before. Not that he wasn't curious; other things simply took precedence, such as the relocation of his guild hall, and Willow's birthday, and the mahjong tournament in Yomi, and...
Wow, his calendar was packed. Anyone wishing to meet with him was probably booking way into the next year. It was time for a change, probably, but that would have to wait until after they killed the Spectral Knight that marched towards them.
He yawned. It had been a day, and he had grown tired of Cardinal's favourite new toys. Their cloning, their splintering attacks. It was all growing bothersome to Morningstar. He yearned for a nap.
But how was he supposed to fit that into his schedule? He was booked solid until / / . Maybe he could close his eyes for a minute in between knights...

Acanthus only seemed to have gotten worse since the last knight was slain. Her sentences were hanging together by a thread. Slurred consonants and drawn out vowels made for a jumble of unintelligible sayings.
Okay, lady--time to put down the... whatever it is you're on...
He would never say that, of course. The only thing less predictable than Acanthus was Inebriated Acanthus, and he wasn't about to get between her and her substance of choice. He also wasn't keen on dancing near her blade. He kept his distance, only drawing near the knight when Acanthus was out of range. He cut through its side, creeped out by the noncorporeal substance that comprised its insides. Who's idea was this again?
Oh right, a weirdo.
Morningstar backed up far, leaving ample room for Acanthus to stumble around the battlefield and swing about as she pleased.
Just please, please, please, don't hit anyone.

This attack applies all applicable DoT's to all targets when this occurs.
- Mist Body | Natural BD 9 attacks made against Spectral Knight will no longer automatically hit and will use accuracy & damage calculations as normal due to the Spectral Knight bending and twisting to allow dangerous attacks to pass harmlessly through. The hit is treated as a non-critical hit, and all enhancements that would activate on a natural BD 9 (bleed, holy, burn, freeze) will not trigger when this occurs.
- Attempted Rewrite | On a CD 10+, the Spectral Knight will find another NPC nearby and manufacture that NPC into a clone of itself with the same stat block including remaining hit points and any applied status effects.
- Tier Lock | For the duration of the fight, all of the participants’ stats that scale with Tier are calculated as though they’re Tier 4. [DMG/MIT/BLEED enhancements etc.] This skill only locks downward. Those at Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3 will still have T1, T2, or T3 stats, respectively.
