  • Defeat 3 «Infernal Hell Hounds».
  • Defeat «Cerberus, Inferno's Rage».

Summary:

Over time, as respawning bosses have been defeated... many have been reborn. First the Wasp Queen, then Avalache, then the Sand Shark. And now, many Information Brokers have been alerting players of the Cerberus' rebirth on the ninth floor in its original location, however the new Cerberus has been said to be extremely aggressive. The rewards are reported to be unknown, however it is agreed upon that the rewards like the other rebirthed bosses should be pretty sweet. Will you accept the fight against the Cerberus one more time?

Outline:

Volcano's Effect: Each rotation, due to the extreme heat players will suffer 30 unmitigatable damage. This effect can be ignored if the player has the skill "Survival" active.

When the name 'Cerberus' wafted its way along the various information channels of Aincrad, Shield did not give it a second thought. After all, quests went in and out of style. It seemed like players had just forgotten and then been suddenly reminded of the three headed flame beast that lived in the volcano on the ninth floor. However, Hikoru had been insistent - this was a brand new fight. Just like the Wasp Queen and the Sand Shark, the quest had gotten a sequel. Players had already been talking about the drop, too. A material that could be applied to a weapon to replace an existing slot with the unique Burn enhancement.

He waited patiently on the edge of Yōgan village, overlooking the volcanic plains that led up to the distant slope of the volcano. He remembered them as an unnavigable maze of narrow natural walkways like spiderweb strands over expanses of magma pools and hot vents. He had then needed to spend so much time backtracking and and guessing new routes the entire way. Now, having fought his way through much higher and more difficult challenges throughout Aincrad, the pathways did not seem so impossible or far apart. Taking them at a run, he could likely jump the worst of the gaps. He almost felt embarrassed of himself back then, especially when he thought about just how much he had bit off more than he could chew when he had soloed against the so-called guardian of fire.

As the simmering light of teleportation faded away, the sulfurous smell of the ninth floor filled Beat's nostrils. On his shoulder, a Raven black falcon familiar sat perched, eyes darting around at players and npcs alike. "Well, we're here, again..." He said, rolling his eyes and walking toward Shield's marker. It didn't take him long to reach his friend and he offered his companion a fist bump as he got his attention, "Hey buddy. I guess the reward for this quest makes sense now that I remember what's here." 

Why couldn't have this quest been on one of the nice floors? 

Horus took to the air as Beat's eye caught glimpse of a particularly shiny piece of volcanic rock. He happily bent down and stashed it away as he gestured to the foreboding volcanic plains, "Well then, shall we have a pleasant, volcanic ash filled walk?" He said with a smirk.

"Less of a walk," Shield said, returning the bump and then turning towards the volcanic wastes of the ninth floor. "More of a trudge and balance and running jump kinda deal," he said, leading the way out of the village. The pools of lava were scattered at first, but the further they walked, the more they became the norm rather than the exception. After all, every step took them closer to the volcano - assuming no back-tracking was necessary. The first few forks they were forced to take were easy enough. Even after so long, Shield remembered them. However, after having to take his first couple of leaps of faith, the web of paths quickly became messy and harder to remember or to predict.

"We might need to let Horus take over from here," Shield said, pausing at a gap just before a fork. Hopping to a stone, he allowed Beat enough room for him to swap into the lead position. "About half way up the base of the volcano is a cave - or at least there was before. It might be slightly different now, though the descriptions in the brokers' reports made it sound pretty similar."

Beat smiled and gave Horus a signal with his head, "You heard the man!" The black falcon familiar took off on command, weaving through clouds of ash that billowed from the lava pools that became more and more numerous as he neared the mountain. As he became harder to track with sight, Beat took the lead, carefully walking between foot holds of solid rock. "Having a flying familiar is certainly handy, though I suppose there could be situations where a snake is certainly more useful." He spoke, looking at his companion as he waited for the signal from his familiar. 

After a few minutes, a screech from his familiar could be heard and Horus passed over them before turning around and slowing his pace, leading them through the maze of paths to the volcano, "Aerial superiority! Nice Horus!" He shouted as he carefully hopped the gaps that would have given him far more trouble thirty levels ago. With Horus leading the way, the players would make it up to the volcano and to the entrance of the cave without difficulty. As he peered into the cave entrance, he glanced at Shield and waved him ahead as Horus reclaimed his perch on Beat's left shoulder, "After you, sir tank."

Shield took the lead once again, throwing his arm up to protect his eyes from the acrid air. He may be protected by his <Survival> skill, but it still was not pleasant. His heat receptors were alive with sensation, and they gave him the muscle memory of pain, as though he were feeling it, but just very far away. He trudged down through the thick smoke produced by the furnace of the volcano much deeper in the mountain. The passage grew dimmer for a while, lit by a persistent red glow from up ahead. Soon the narrow passage widened into what seemed to have once been some sort of lava chamber during older eruptions. Over the distant sounds of bubbling magma and the rumbles that would sound through the mountain from all directions here and there, there slowly emerged another sound.

Growling... Some kind of beast was drawing nearer, and through the fumes, three sets of twin pin-pricks of light stood out. It was far too small to be Cerberus himself, but Shield did ready his shield. He recalled the hell hounds he had fought before, and that meant the big one likely wasn't far behind them. "Heads up, Beat. Miniboss encounter at twelve o'clock."

Beat's blood began to pump as his ears tuned into the sound. He drew his spear and slowly made his way through the cave before reaching what appeared to be a large opening inside the volcano. Falls of lava ran down the walls of the large cavern space, providing bright illumination and making it easy for Beat to see the three fiery hounds staring right at him, their snarls increasing in intensity. 

Beat grinned as he held his spear out and charged forward, his charge skill surrounding him with red energy and increasing his speed dramatically, "Right! Like I'm going to wait for you to make the first move!" As he approached, he quickly drew his glowing spear across his field of vision, leaving behind the familiar lunar crescent wave of energy which he chased into the the hounds. The collision echoed loudly through the cave as all three hounds were blasted backwards while Beat grinned at them all, "Hi, excuse me. Is your dad home?"

To nobody's surprise, Beat dealt a heavy blow to the hounds, but even as they were being blasted backwards, it was clear that they wouldn't be down for the count. They would get a chance to retaliate before the final strike. Rushing forward, Shield filled his lungs and blasted the canines with his voice. "WOOF, WOOF, YOU FLEA-BAGS! DARE YOU TO STAY ON YOUR FEET FOR TEN MORE SECONDS!"

Their heads all swiveled, their jowls pulled back to bare their jagged teeth, and one by one they sprinted for the taunting tank. They each latched onto something, one onto his leg and a second one onto his shield, trying and failing to pull it loose. As Shield attempted to pull it free the third one skidded to a halt behind him and lunged, grabbing his entire calf in its fanged jaws and biting down. In the real world, it was a bite that would have gone clean down to the bone. Here, his armor protected him from any proper damage, but it was still enough to weigh him down. Knowing that Beat's attack was coming, he reached down, grabbing the dog by the ear and yanking its head free. The jaws released and it fell back yelping as he kicked the others loose.

"Clean shot for you! Let's see it!"

Beat's eyes narrowed as he made a couple of quick estimates, "I think a couple will just hang on unless I make it really count." He said as his spear began to glow with the familiar lunar glow. As Shield shook them off, Beat charged forward, getting right up to one of the hound who yelped as Beat released his technique, sending the lunar pulse out, with one of the hounds riding it until it managed to cleave it in two. Another hound was blasted into a pool of lava never to emerge again while another was simply sent across the room, hanging on by a narrow margin. 

Beat clicked his tongue as he eyed the last hound, "Lucky dog." He was not used to mobs having damage reduction, but he supposed that these were not normal mobs. "Alright Shield, your thorns should end that one. If not, I guess I can take another swing at it."

"Let's try to remove some chance from the situation," Shield said, lowering himself into a defensive stance. He held out his sword, preparing to parry and counterattack should it manage to strike him. "These guys seem to be pretty accurate too, so I should have no problem hitting it unless-"

As he spoke, the hound circled back around, charging at him full tilt. It opened its mouth, snarling with a fierce anger as it went to lunge. Even as it did so though, its front paws slipped out from under it, and it planted its muzzle straight into the ground, tumbling end over end and landing belly up on its back. "...yeah, unless it does something like that. Criminy!" He shook his head, putting his hand to his forehead in disbelief. "It's amazing how the game finds ways to do this to me so consistently. You have no idea how irritating it is farming as a thorns tank with this-" he said, throwing out his sword hand to gesture, "-A.I. on the offense!"

Beat shook his head as the envenom debuff ticked and nearly finished off the hound, but not quite. The sliver of health was almost non-existent, merely coloring the end of the health bar to let you know that it did, in fact, have a little life left. "Well, guess I get to whip this sword art out. That thing has like, one hit point left." 

Beat walked forward at an almost casual pace, holding his spear out to the side as it filled with energy, though the glow from his spear was far dimmer than usual. "Alright, puppy, time to say goodnight. You're up way past your bed time." With that, Beat activated the sword art, causing him to seem to disappear and reappear in an instant, his new location being directly in front of the hell hound, his spear piercing the canine's throat.  "Guess dogs only have three lives." He said, looking around the cave as the hound burst into red pixels.

As the last of the hell hounds fell, Shield gave a nod of finality. "Not often you get to break out the weak sword arts, is it?" he said with a little smirk. "Don't get too comfortable with that. Papa dog is around here somewhere, and I have a feeling you won't be-"

Even as he spoke, there came a deep, rumbling howl from further down the passage. That on its own was certainly intimidating. However, it was followed one after another by two more howls, each in the same booming voice, though slightly off-key from one another, causing the dormant magma chamber to vibrate with the dissonant strains. Shield's eyes followed the source of the sound. The passage from which the sound had come was too dark to see properly, but it was not difficult to hear. Something was bounding their way, and it was big. 

Shield held out his sword, focusing on the tip and gathering there a collection of red light that coalesced into a loose sphere. He tossed it to Beat before raising his shield. He did not know yet what he was in for, but he had a sneaking suspicion that the phase attacks from the previous iteration of Cerberus would be carried over, if not enhanced.

"Here comes out guy."

Chills ran down his spine as the angry howl of what he assumed was Cerberus reverberated off of the cavern walls, adding to its intimidating nature. He followed Shield's eyes towards one of the dark caverns as Shield tossed him the red orb of energy. He snatched it happily, feeling the energizing sensation it provided, letting him know that he was now hitting harder than before, "Alright, let's kick some ass!"

Come!

Three pairs of red, venomous eyes peered through the darkness as the heavy thud of the creature's footsteps grew closer, "Damn, what is this thing?" He muttered before soon getting his answer. The Cerberus emerged from thew passage way, it's three heads appearing to look for its kin before splitting their attention between the two players. 

"No aoe if I remember right. Gotta hit one at a time." he said as he activated his charge skill and ran forward at blazing speed, "Fine by me! Let's go boy!" His voice carried through the cavern as he leapt into the air, his form distorting as it always did, pummeling the central head with thunderous strikes as all three heads roared in pain. He retreated back towards Shield as the undamaged heads each took a snap at him, being far too distracted to land their teeth on the glass cannon.

Here we go.

Cerberus certainly wasn't shy, that was for sure. The great beast let out another bloodcurdling chorus of howls as Beat unleashed his opening attack, this time bearing the full brunt of both the Charge skill and Shield's buffs. For sure, it would be a potent combination, but much to the tank's disappointment, not enough to ace the first head. He took a deep breath, powering his lungs with the pressure of his core and chest and blasting the field boss with sound. "HEY, MUTT! YOU'RE PUT TOGETHER WITH TOO MANY HEADS! THE WAY I FIGURE," Shield lowered himself down into a defensive position, Manticore Mask flashing its deadly looking red eyes at the monstrous canine before them, "YOU'VE GOT ABOUT THREE TOO MANY!"

He slapped the face of his shield with the flat of his sword, slowly circling Cerberus. The many heads snapped and snarled, their eyes alive with hatred for the taunting tank. It lunged forward, the three sets of jaws converging on the tank. Clamped down hard, biting and chewing at their armored target. Shield's eyes remained on his health gauge. It barely budged. "Looks like he didn't manage to trigger his phase. That's perfect! Take that first head off so I've got one fewer problems, Beat!"

Beat's eye glanced up to his health bar, watching his newly acquired battle healing skill doing its job. The hounds thorns damage barely did anything and the Cerberus was hardly any more. He looked himself over, noticing the luminescent red marks left by the effect that was normally reserved for the poor creatures who chose to strike his companion, "Battle healing is so nice! I'll definitely cap it. It'll make a huge difference in floor boss fights. Anything to take pressure off of our already poor supply of healing." 

Oh right!

Beat grinned as he peered up at the heavily damaged head of the Cerberus, "Sorry about that, was distracted. Now then, I think I was trying to teach you the sit command." He leaped into the air,. wind rustling his hair as his spear seemed to strike six times at once in a ring before finishing the combination with a fatal thrust, "Sit!"

"The best thing about Battle Healing is that it never stops getting better with you. Other skills are just a one-off bonus, but as you level, Battle Healing improves with you," Shield said, cocking an eyebrow at Beat. "It's part of why I'm so unkillable. A fraction of it at least. You'll be... less killable." Shield held out his sword once again, running up into Cerberus' face(s), only instead of making an attack, he ran through its legs, making a diving roll and coming up on the other side upright. By the time he was on his feet, his skill was charged and ready. "Catch, Beat!" He hurled the sphere of light he had gathered, sending it curving up and over the top of Cerberus as it homed in on Beat.

The oversized mutt knelt down, on the other hand, was still trying to look under its paws when it heard the shout from behind. It whirled on the spot, sending spittle sailing through the air. Shield lifted his defenses just in time for the stuff to splatter on Manticore Mask. "Lovely..." As he debated whether to try to remove it, Cerberus knelt down and lunged with its two remaining heads. one bit down on Shield's sword arm. The other missed his leg, crashing into the ground. To the one near his leg, Shield turned and wiped the slobber off of his shield. "Here. You dropped this..."

"I think I like this boss." Beat said with a devilish grin. As he spoke, a familiar red aura surrounded him as he filled his spear with the energy for his sword art, "A boss I can charge multiple times? Yes please." Seeing the red sphere coming from Shield, Beat pushed hard off of the ground, taking to the air at blinding speed, reaching his target instantly. The red orb diligently tracked its target, following Beat all the way to the middle head of the Cerberus. Beat's right hand snatched the orb out of the air before grasping his spear once again and unleashing his strongest sword art one more time, "Dimensional Stampede! ORAAAAAA!!!!" 

With his concentration skill still on cooldown, Beat focused hard on remaining stable as the charge skill shook his body with the turbulence created by the speed it granted. His efforts were a success as the Middle head failed to evade his vicious onslaught of rapid strikes. Each blow chipped away at the heal health hovering over the middle head as they traded just a little of Beat's own health, though hardly enough for concern. "Too easy!"

Shield had already buffed and pulled hate. There was the option to parry, but at this point, he was better off saving that for a moment when there was more health on the line. All the second head needed to do was hit. "Hey, pooch, you mind speeding this up? We've got places we need to be, you know?" Shield stretched and yawned mockingly. The two remaining heads did not take kindly to being made sport of and its body crouched down, preparing to strike. It lunged forward, biting at Shield one after another with its remaining heads. The first shattered on impact, its many fragments scattering into the arid air. The second managed to get a hold of his leg.

With a sigh, Shield put his shield against the creature's face and pushed, peeling it off of him like a an uncomfortably tight boot. "Would you please chill out? We'll kill you soon enough, don't you worry!"

"Alright, last one..." Beat eyed the health bar of the remaining head as its eyes glared at Shield while it attempted to find some sort of opening, "Looks like it's going to take pretty good hit to get through all of that health..." He cracked a brave smile as he twirled his spear around, "Good thing I like a challenge!" 

Aim for the eyes, everything is weaker there. 

His intended target was a known weakness of most creatures since no amount of training could ever make an eyeball more resilient to impact. Still, this was a game and not all games had such weaknesses, however Sword Art Online tended to follow some semblance of realism, however actually hitting such a critical target was no short order. Not only would Beat be airborne, but his rapid strikes were hard to aim precisely. Add to that, the fact that his target was far from immobile made aiming for a critical strike difficult. 

"Alright, let's give it a go!" He shouted as he took to the air one more time, Horus screeching as he dove in to assist his master. Beat's sword art struck true, his strikes pelting the brow, nose and cheekbones of the elemental canine, but to no avail as the creature's health bar stopped just short of empty. Beat clicked his tongue as he landed, glaring up at the Cerberus angrily, "Come on! What is that?!"

"That," Shield said, the impudence dripping from his words, "is the difference between you and me." He strode between Cerberus and Beat, turning his back blatantly to the former and addressing the latter. The monster behind him took offense to being taken lightly and reared up on its hind legs, letting out a beastly snarl before gaping its mouth and lunging straight down at Shield's exposed back. "You leave jobs unfinished, while on the other hand-" Cerberus' teeth sank into Shield's shoulder, but before another instant passed, the great dog shattered into fragments of pale blue light that melted into the arid volcanic air.

"I get things done. Ready to go home, slugger?" he said, giving Beat a wry little grin and a wink, not unlike those he liked to flash at Shield now and then before beginning the walk back out the way they came. "Either way, one more in the bag." He offered Beat their customary fist bump while keeping his eyes trained forward on the path ahead.

Beat placed his hands on his hips as Shield jabbed back at him. It was always nice to see Shield having, especially when it was him giving Beat a taste of his own medicine. He returned the wry smile and happily met Shield's fist with his own, "I have to give you style points for that kill. It was pretty bad-ass. As usual, the two of us together is kind of unfair." He said as the quest reward screen came up. 

"I don't think I'm ready to go back just yet..." He said as he pulled up their joined inventory, "What would you say to a dungeon on the upper floors? I could even buff a little more to make it easier." He gave an eager look to Shield, hoping that his ambition to grind and put in effort to get stronger would not be lost on the king of grinding.
