So, say you were having a discussion with another player in an rp. How would you do this, being there is not much between someone saying: "hi" "howdy" "how's it going" "good, how about you". I don't know how you could keep your posts long that way.

Put a description of the area, what your character thinks and what your character says.

Like Beoreson said, descriptors and such can be added.
If your in a field, before, during, or after speaking, describe what you see, how it affects you, what your thinking, etc.
