Ryo reached up and wiped the sweat from his forehead, his hand gliding back and slicking his hair back to his scalp. He reached up and read over the quest box. "Yeah, fighting in the heat suck a lot. Just being in it sucks. This humidity sucks. I take back everything about your fifth floor." He said, finally reading the final line. "Wait, isn't this a different thing?" He asked, looking up at Teion. He pressed the circle button, getting rid of the pop up. Regardless of what he was supposed to receive, it was nice to get at least something for his troubles. "Well, at least it was easy." He said, not knowing the full extent of what was about to happen.

The body twitched, and convulsed. Ryo yelped, and fell backwards onto the hot ground. The body stood back up. Ryo drew his sword, ready to fight. "Yeah alright!" He said, a bit exasperated. "Alright, round two I guess!" He said, rushing up and attacking before it could get it's own chance to. Ryo's blade dug into deep, but the sudden appearance of new heads forced him to take a step back. White hot fangs, dripping with magma bared against him. Ryo raised his arm, the drool steaming in the hot air around him and on his arm. Ryo shook his arm free of the drool noting the damage he had taken. "Damn, can barely get close to the thing." He said, warning Teion.

• Burning Bite | On Cerberus' successful attacks, the player is afflicted with T4 Burn. (56 unmitigatable damage per turn for 2 turns.) This ailment is negatable by Fireproof.
• Boiling Hide | On successful attacks against Cerberus, the player receives 30 thorns damage. Successful critical attacks against Cerberus increases damage received by the player to 50. This damage is negatable by Fireproof.
• Infernal Punishment | On a critical attack, heads of Cerberus that have not yet attacked for that turn will gain additional damage and 50% Phase for their attack that turn. (+25 on minor crit | +75 on major crit)
• Blazing Bite | If all three heads are reduced to 150 HP or less without any having been destroyed, <<Cerberus, Inferno’s Rage>> will howl with all three heads, summoning 3 <<Infernal Hell Hounds>> to come to its aid as a Free Action. They attack immediately, as part of the same post. Damage from new applications of Burning Bite is now doubled. (112 unmitigatable damage per turn for 2 turns.) 

 

Ryo smiled, knowing full well that Calcifer probably couldn't see it in the looming darkness. "A shield?" He said repeating her, thinking aloud. He listened to her reasoning and chuckled along. "And what better to display your symbol of hope and justice." He said, suggesting the idea to her. "If you ever need decent armor, head to floor five. There's a woman there with purple hair like mine, her name is Teion. Tell her I sent you, and she'll get you whatever you need. I'll even go so far as to pay her for it. So no worries." He said, offering to buy the girl new arms and armor. He was interested to see where her journeys would take her.

On her comment about slowing down the search. "Do not fret. We will find her. Now, stay close and use your other senses. See if we can't hear her." Ryo said. His green eyes glowed softly in the absence of light in the cave. His night vision helped a lot, but it didn't help him locate people or things. A few moments of walking, Ryo stopped in his tracks. Did he imagine it? He put a hand on Calcifer, to stop her from shouting out some more. "Did you hear that?" He whispered. "I thought I heard, there it is again." He said, his head snapping to a direction. Instinctively he moved towards the sound he had heard. The sound cleared up from the noise pollution the cave provided, the echo, the water dripping from stalactites, and various rodents and creatures making noises. 

The noise was soft sniffling, the sound of someone who had accepted their fate and had finished crying. Perhaps at the cusp of falling asleep. Ryo turned a corner in the cave and saw her. A small child in a bright daisy yellow dress. The dress was torn in places, and covered in mud and dirt. Her hair was a mess, complete with a twig stuck within it's brown locks. Ryo knelt down, and removed the stick tossing it aside. "You must be Koko." Ryo said, pushing the hair the was stuck from to her face aside. "Don't worry, you're safe now." He said.

Another hot day on floor five. The sand was particularly irritating today, the high gusts of wind carrying loose particles into his mouth and eyes. Today was a farming day, Teion and himself set aside some time to wander the wonderful desert to kill every sand worm, bandit, and scorpion within a twelve mile radius. And this deep into the desert, they sometimes posed to be a challenge. Were it not for Teion's remarkable knowledge of this floor, he'd be lost for sure. And the denizens of this floor proving to be a hassle at times, it would've been awful. Thankfully, he had decent company.

He lay in wait perched upon a small rock. The worms in the area couldn't track him from this point, and that was the plan. Teion called out left, and Ryo adjusted himself dropping into a squat. Just like fishing, he told himself preparing for the signal. They had a few hiccups earlier that day, but with enough repetition and practice this was as easy as counting. The sand worm bore after her, it's body twisting and thrashing as it spat up dirt and sand. "Ittōryū-" Ryo started, signaling the start of his sword art. He blade, still in it's sheath, began to glow as it activated. And on his beloved signal, he leapt into the air. "Flying Tiger Strike!" He shouted, completing the sword art. His blade flashed and hummed through the air as it cut into the worm cleanly, severing nearly into two piece. Were it not for it size, he would have.

He landed in the sand, stumbling a bit as he sheathed his blade again. "I think that's the last of them in this area." He said, making a mental note of how many they had slain in the last few hours. "Wanna move back to the scorpions or go get a shower?" He asked, thumbing in the general direction of civilization. Ryo nodded. 'Yeah, this build is pretty good. But it could be better." He said, patting the katana on his hip. "I have a few things I need to get first, but it's the general idea of what I'm taking yeah." He said, answering.

Ryo squinted into the distance, trying to make out whatever city they were closest too, only to see what it was that Teion had mentioned. If only he had the tracking mod for his eyes, then he could at least go through his friends list and see if it was anyone he knew. Not that anyone he knew would be camping this deep into the desert. He looked over his lover and saw the look in her eyes. He let out a small sigh. "Let's go check it out, could be that someone needs help with something." He said, shrugging and shaking his head. He knew that look, and when it happened it was almost impossible to get her to not want to go poking around.

Approaching was a simple task, there was even a rocky outcropping to use as a scouting bluff. As the pair approached Ryo began to sniff the air, catching the faint scent of a campfire or two. And sure enough, looking out he could see a few plumes of smoke trailing into the orange and blue sunsetting sky. Squinting into the distance, and lit by the fire he recognized the outfits of the men. Bandits. He had run into a group of them a few days ago. He, a women named Nymoria, and his sister like cousin Acanthus had dealt with a bugged quest that decided to toss bandit after bandit at them. Ryo shrunk down low, attempting to hide his profile and motioned for Teion to do the same. "Bandits. Didn't think I'd see them this far out though. Thought they'd be closer to town." He said, trailing alongside the backside of a dune.

A few feet more he would notice two figures doing the same. He didn't recognize them, and they didn't have an orange crystal, both good things. Hopefully this wasn't more lost relatives. Ryo raised a hand, his palm outward in greeting. "Oi." He whispered. "We interrupting?" He asked, motioning over to the small crowd down below. "Because we can dip if we need to. We were just curious is all." He said, letting them know that he was with someone. Looking at the pair of people, recognition appeared across his face. "Oh hey, it's you!" He said in a loud whisper. "How did you like the chips?" He asked, genuinely curious.

Ryo let out a small sigh of relief as Calcifier resigned to listen to him. Last thing he wanted was for her to accidentially get caught up one of these things and turn into pixels. "I've been around the block a few time." He said, watching the bat zip back and forth in the air. "So just watch the great Samurai Ryo, and he'll show you how it's done." He said, gripping his katana with one hand. He took a few steps to the side, so that he'd had plenty of room to move if need be. He had gotten the bat's attention at least, and now he would be its sole target. No more preying on the week for the bat.

Ryo took a stance turning his body to the side, holding his blade above his head. "Ittōryū-" He began, as his blade glowed with the power of his sword art. The bat let out a mighty screech unafraid and programed to kill it flew at him. Ryo shouted his attack name. "Half Crescent!" And brought his blade down, striking the bat. The ground shook slightly as the air was displaced from the attack itself. The bat's sputtered for a moment, before being severed cleanly in two. And as each half fell to the side, they disappeared into a mess of crystals. Ryo spun his blade once, the blade humming slightly before resheathing the blade onto his hip. "And that's that. Now there could be more, so we should be careful." He said taking the few steps back to Calcifer.

Ryo fought against the maw of Cerberus. His heels dug into the craggy rock as he was pushed back. Grunting he spoke back. "Yeah. Not too difficult!" He said, throwing the beast off of him. It had gotten more wild, more desperate. Now with only one brain and set of teeth to work with it was getting harder and harder to land a hit. He needed some windup, some breathing room. Someone who tanked would be lovely. "I can't get a clean shot in." He said, trying to find an opening. Teion had already cleared out her mob pack, and now he was standing here unable to kill three heads in that time. How embarrassing. "I would ask for help, but I think I got it. Unless you wanna kill steal." He said, attempting to taunt his girlfriend into helping him. He had constantly been on fire this entire fight, and frankly he just wanted to go home.

Ryo stopped walking, and stared at the pink woman in disbelief. She had put in the effort to do the quests, or missions, or jobs or whatever they were. And had opted to NOT collect the reward? His hand found his forehead with a loud slap. "That's-" He began, before thinking about what he should say. He let out a sigh, collecting himself. His hand removed from his face. "Completing those jobs and accepting the rewards is how you get stronger in this world." He said. "You can't expect to save everyone without some strength. And without any power, you'll end up failing." He said, thinking back on his past. The pair agreed at least philosophically and Ryo was having fun entertaining the idea that he could help Calfier along her journey get it started. But maybe, this was proving to be too much. He'd need a demonstration, show her what she had the ability to become.

Approaching the mouth of the cave was the perfect time. The cave was dark, and he could see that Calcifer was hunched over, squinting trying to see into the darkness. Ryo closed his eyes, then reopened them. His eyes shifted from normal to a bright green light. His night vision activating. Seeing into the cave Ryo could see shapes moving. Namely, a large one from the ceiling. Ryo placed a hand on Calcifer as she mentioned the monsters could be anywhere and pointed to the looming shape in the darkness.

The shape fell from the ceiling, and dashed out of the cave at the pair. Ryo stood firm as the shape flew above him, readying to attack. His blade drawn, he was ready to cut the giant bat into two. But what he didn't expect was for it to ignore him completely. Why though? He was ahead, he had a weapon drawn, he was ready to fight. So why did it dive at Calcifer? "Hey! Watch out!" Ryo said, flinging himself into the way between the knight and the giant bat. The bat's fangs pierced into his arm and into his shoulder, it's drool spraying about. Ryo flinched as the pain sensation sank into him. Didn't matter how miniscule the damage was, the pain was still there. From his adventure with Theo and watching how a boar nearly gored him in a single hit, he knew exactly what this bat would've done. It would've killed Calcifer. He flexed his arm up, gripping the bat and pulling it off of him before it's AI reset and it took to the air again. Ryo kept his eyes on it, before stating a word of warning to Calcifer. "Stay behind me. This thing can, and will kill you if we're not careful." He said.

Ryo felt the warmth over his body as the embers began to die out, his HP dwindling only slightly before shooting back up to full. This entire fight wasn't dangerous, just annoying. He stood up, rubbing his torso where he had gotten slammed into. The armor he wore took the brunt of the attack. This new build felt better. It allowed him to stare things down, and then attack as he wished. No more just flailing about, no more wild strikes. He took in a breath and took a few steps towards the Cerberus. It's remaining two heads snapped in anticipation, almost as if waiting for Ryo to strike. Ryo exhaled, and was suddenly beside the beast. Closing in behind him was a gust of wind, still hot and warm thanks to the floor, and caught up to Ryo. The Cerberus turned it's body to attack him, but one of the heads stayed behind as it turned. "Ittōryū - Flying Tiger Slash." Ryo said, severing another head of the beast. Now it was no better than a normal dog of unusual size. He smirked, remembering a conversation that Acanthus had. Could the AI in this game feel fear? Was that programed, was it simulated? Do the beasts of this place know that the battle was unwinnable? It didn't matter, the quest required that he slay the beast, and so he would.

His girlfriend egged him on, calling for him to get mad. He thought about it, but no. There was a pattern here, one he could exploit. Ryo got to his feet, and held his katana above his head. He took in a deep breath, before exhaling. "Ittōryū-" The first Cerberus head lunged at him dragging it's chin to bait him into jump again, or diving to the right into the other two heads. That was the pattern Ryo recognized. The beast would only grab dust and air as it missed him, in the blink of an air Ryo was beside it's neck his blade alight with the power of his newfound armor ability and his sword art. "Violet Crescent!" Ryo called out his blade coming down on the beast's neck. A loud whimper echoed throughout the area and the head was properly severed. Ryo smiled, before looking over at Teion. "Hey! Did you see tha? Wasn't that coo-" He was cut off as a second head slammed into him. Somehow, he had forgotten that there were two other heads to contend with. Ryo was on fire again, and now he was starting to get mad.

Ryo listened intently as Calcifier began to disclose her reasons. The reason for her being so underleveled, and wanting to explore further beyond. She worded it like she was going to give him some kind of rare secret. His brows furrowed as he listened even closer. Then when the grand answer was revealed he let out a loud sputter to stop himself from laughing. She then regaled him with the tale of, thirty three minutes ago and continued to site that the teleportation circle was just to intoxicating to not use. Then the realization hit him. "Wait, you've been protecting the citizens of the Town of Beginnings?" He asked. If she was doing quests or at the least killing a mob or two she should be something above level one. "Wait, when an NPC gives you a job to do do you.... complete the job?" He asked, then he thought for half a second before going deeper. "I mean, do you click the 'circle' when they stop talking?" He pestered.

Then came her next statement. It stopped him in his tracks while he thought back. The cheerful demeanor he carried faded away as he thought about what she had said. He betrayed his old crew, to Jomei and Lowenthal. And even if Ryo didn't participate in clearing the place, how many people died then? He looked up, rubbing the back of his neck. There were some bad people, who needed to be taken care of, but were all of them? And if that was true, was he just as expendable? He rubbed his eyes as he met Calcifiers eyes with a serious gaze. "Would it not be unbecoming of a hero to ignore other people in need?" He asked. "There's nintey-eight other floors, each teeming with people who need help. Are you to say that they should suffer, because those you met first need help now?" He asked, then shook his head. "It's not as simple as betrayal, It's about recognizing that there's too many people needing help. The woman who lost her child, the old woman who missed her cat, the players stuck here who just want to go home." He looked up into the night sky. "There's too many people who are crying for help right now. There's ninety-eight other floors, each one teeming with life and people who need help." He locked eyes with Calcifer. "And it's people like us who rise to the calling to help them." He said. He had ignored people crying for help far to often, and even now he could still hear them. Trying to get him to stop the men from taking them to be slaves, to stop them from taking away their loved ones, to stop them from killing them. He would never, ignore a cry for help again. "It's a heroes job to answer every call, not just the few. Isn't that right?" He said, raising his voice in a triumphant manner trying to psyche up Calcifer rather then bring the mood down.

Ryo shook his head, the ran his hand along his face removing the bangs that stuck it it. "Ah, I'm not sure." He said truthfully. He didn't know if anyone from back then would truly hold a grudge so hard that they'd come after him. Then again, how would they know that he was the one who gave them up in the first place? "Then again, I don't think they'd know I was the rat. So to speak. If anything, I don't wanna be recognized." He said waving a hand in front of his face.

THe first thing about the cave that Ryo noticed was the excess heat. Being in the volcanic rock made it warm, but something made it warmer. Ryo's hand went to his katana, and gripped it firmly. The ground started shaking, the earth was quaking, and a trio of dog heads revealed itself. It was, smaller than he expected, but still uncomfortably large. He met with Teion's playful elbow. "Think he's house trained?" He asked, before rolling to the side.

Almost instantly, the beast called in the hounds. More hellhounds swarmed from out of the cave, and ran past him. Before he could react to those dashing past him, he sensed something behind him. He leapt into the air, narrowly dodging one of the heads from biting him.  However, now he was a much easier target in the air and the third head slammed into him causing him to bounce off of the floor. Thankfully he turned his body and blocked the most of the dogs impact, thanks to his new armor, but the second head was ready for him. Unable to move quick enough, and its maw full of fury and fire it's teeth sank into him engulfing him. Ryo's health however, stayed pretty much full for this entire exchange, his pride taking the full blow. He wrestled with the maw, forcing it off of him. "Oh I'm going to kick this guys ass!" He said, angry. Ryo stood up and went to make an attack, but instantly had to raise his blade another way to block another head from slamming into him.

Stats

SHe joined the party, although it was strange that she seemed to be disinterested in the pop-up that appeared. This at least let him look at her stats, and dear god in heaven. She was still level 1? And she was on this floor? Did she do, anything at all before hand? She, must have right? She had to have, right? Despite the strangeness of it, he was going to do his best to make sure that she didn't explode in pixels in front of him. He saw the twinkle in her eye, and he could feel the blaze in her heart. Perhaps, that's what an Ember-Knight was? He would probably ask after this quest, or if he had some time in between.

"Do not worry Miss Knight, I know the way." He said, and with an embellished movement of his body he began to walk in the direction that the quest was pointing him in. There would be a few moments of walking, a time to get to know this person. "So Calcifer. What brings you to this floor of the castle?" He asked, curious as to why someone of such a low level would be up here like this.
