  1. It didn’t take long for the inertia to be overcome, people stopped swinging, and those that didn’t, suddenly felt the abandonment of their task by the contingent in general. This cognition caused them to feel pressured, forcing them to lay down their weapons.

To everyone’s surprise, the wolves didn’t press the advantage that was given to them. They circled around the caravan. Randal looked into the one with the baby wolves, while Belverine led him further back with a few footsteps.

    Another adventurer stepped forward.

“Short…” Randal hadn’t noticed her before, she barely came up to his chest in height and sported shoulder length hair. Looking at her leather hide armor, Randal once again felt sorely underdressed.

The outfit she wore was riveted together with metallic pins and buttons across the front, while the middle seemed to be tucked into her navel like a corset. A useless skirt-like addition was seen at the top of the leather trousers she wore. “A fashion statement and a good one.” Randal thought.

She gave Belverine and I an appraising nod and approached the wolves slowly, weapons not drawn, hands up. She let out a soft gasp when she saw what the wolves were after. The wolves reacted with pause, they looked at her and their growls grew softer. They allowed her to approach with caution, eyeing her every move. As she drew towards the cages one of the wolves suddenly jumped in front of her before another laid a paw on its side, forcing it to withdraw. She entered the caravan, the atmosphere amongst the adventurers outside was tense. At any moment, she could lose her life if she was piled on by the wolves.

The idea of taking such a risk was honestly beyond Randal, there was no reason to care that much about the storyline of the wolves, they were just beasts of the forest that were hunted for experience and col. Although they might have lives of their own, they were still the only means by which growing adventurers were able to become stronger themselves. Moreover, in SAO there was no such thing as an ecology. The system took care of that by ensuring the monsters continued to be generated and spawned in the forest. Or at least…that’s what Randal thought, he had never considered that if a party of players were to completely wipe out the roaring wolf population in a day, that the system might take that into account and stop spawning them, instead increasing the spawn rate of their prey to simulate the sudden disappearance of their predators.

Nonetheless, she was given access to the cages, and with some skill, fiddled with the hinges and locks of the first cage. Not long after the hatch of the cage swung open, allowing the first baby wolf to exit. Wearily and tiredly pacing out from the cage, the baby wolf had barely taken a step of free land before it was nipped in the neck by a wolf which promptly retreated, running out of the caravan and into the forest as fast as it could.

The girl proceeded to release the rest of the baby wolves and the same thing repeated for each of them. Soon all the wolves had left. The last of them giving the girl one final look before disappearing.

  2. Before any of the adventurer’s were able to get to the wolves by the doors of the caravan, they managed to break open the steel locks which disintegrated in a blue flash, allowing the doors to the cargo hold of the carriages to open. They entered as Belverine and I approached as a vanguard to some of the slower adventurers’. Those that came before were either occupied with the other wolves who were leaping around avoiding their attacks skillfully.

According to Randal’s observations, it seemed like unlike before, they were uninterested in attacking or killing, they were focused on dodging and staying alive. That’s when Randal looked into the cargo gold to find the wolves that had entered facing him, mouths upturned in a vicious growl and sneer. Behind them were little baby wolves. Infantile and unable to defend themselves, these merchants must have snuck into their camps while the main force was out hunting and slain the fewer older or more maternal wolves all to capture these babies.

The idea was not beyond Randal’s imagination and illuminated him. This was why the attack on the caravan seemed so forced. It also explained why there were so many hired guards in the first place. Normally traveling through these routes didn't pose much of an issue, the merchants must have predicted and even expected there to be a revenge attack on them, so they over prepared.

“Are those?” Belverine started. He didn’t get a chance to make a complete question before he pulled Randal back.

“Sorry about that,” and apologized for laying his hands on Randal, “those are baby roaring wolves aren’t they?”.

“Yea, it seems the merchants were doing something they shouldn’t have. Ended up calling the whole cohort of wolves into action.” By not telling us the truth of what we were protecting, these merchants had made us undertake a risk we weren’t prepared for. A risk fortunately, that had ended the lives of no one important, none of the other adventurer’s had been eliminated, only some guards and merchants themselves. Nonetheless, Randal shuddered at the thought that some of these people were more important than others.

“Well yes,” He thought to himself, “some of these people actually have lives in the real world, beyond the veil of virtual reality, they were human beings with organs and families that had to take care of them in their time of invalidity,” shuffling in place,”but the NPCs who populated this world, seemed just as much alive as everyone else. They may not exist in a real sense, but their lives, their motives, their families were all real to them…and real to the rest of us who are trapped here.”

“What do we do though? Should we back away? There’s nothing left to protect.” Randal murmured.

“We don’t have to fight them, you’re right. Guys! Everyone!” Belverine shouted, “Retreat a little, just slow down and back away, kill them if they attack you but just hold on one second!” His voice didn’t echo but it was still enough to stem the tide of attacks.

  3.   Day 43 (68 exp total)

Today, Randal felt like going back to the basics, there was way too much going on in his life and he wanted to keep it a little simple. There were many dishes that he used to make when he was younger, but he felt like the palette of those dishes were far too juvenile. So a bit older he went, the taste of his dishes then was quite exotic, he was all about pursuing the little threads of flavor which he found interesting, but none stuck with him. Not a single flavor was worth the upkeep, some were hard to maintain in terms of requirements, some where difficult to prepare, and many flavours simply weren’t interesting enough.

Randal used attempted 9 crafts and critically failed 1 times. (4 exp * 1)

“Rargh!” One of the wolves leapt at Randal, no longer attempting to sidestep him. Instead taking Randal momentary confusion to its advantage and trying to bite him. Fortunately, Randal was just barely able to move out of the way in time. The wolf tried to pivot and push Randal towards its ally but a few backsteps was enough to give Randal enough space. Two things came from his retreat, the first is that the two wolves that were not plotting their revenge against Randal were no longer interested in pursuing the caravan or the merchants, the second was that Randal was not being navigated away from the caravan in general. Realizing this, Randal pushed forward instead, making dancing like steps towards the wolves and attacking, a few kicks were able to get them to retreat instead and give him the momentum.

“Let’s go!” One of the voices cried out. All of a sudden, the caravan started moving again, leaving the armed guards and adventurer’s behind. The deal between Randal and the merchants was that of protection and transportation, and though he understood that it was in the merchant's best interest to escape before more wolves arrived, it was still quite rude and uncaring of them to leave everyone else behind. The wolves started to split, some chasing the caravan while others became embroiled in the fight they were having. My two partners in this dance of death were of the latter. There was not much that Randal could do except to try and end the fight as soon as he could. If he was lucky, he might be able to catch up to the caravan before anything major happened.

As the field started to clear, the remaining wolves were getting swarmed by the rest of us. Randal was able to take out his own two wolves swiftly in the confusion, a small tussle involving a fist to one’s crown and a knee kick to another’s jaw was enough to eliminate them from the playing field. Wherever Randal looked, mobs were being eliminated left and right as they got ganged up on. In a sea of players and armed guards, the wolves were like grains of sand - swept away by the storm.

“Hi, Randal!” Randal introduced himself a little curtly.

“Balverine.” The blue haired kid responded, he was the only one to do so. The rest were either not interested in making conversation or were already moving towards the caravan dust trails.

“Let’s go too?” Randal asked, happy to at least not be ignored.

As they sprinted ahead, Randal and Belverine had a short conversation. He was going to Aruyt to end his  expedition. He had been out in the wild tracking a beast the whole time and was unable to find it in the end. He was going back to get his bearings and resupply.

Midway through their conversation, they spotted the rest of the adventurer’s who had gone on ahead battle with a few of the wolves, the caravan had had its wheels torn off and some of the the animals that they had been using to drive the vehicle were no longer there, presumably without any armed guards, the wolves had caught up easily and eliminated them. Some wolves were in the heat of battle while others were yapping at the doors of the caravan.

Just as Randal had thought, it seemed like a party of Roaring wolves were quickly heading in their direction. It seems important to point out at this junction that Ranal wasn’t the only adventurer that was onboard these caravans, besides the armed guards that the Merchant had hired, there were also other adventurers who had come along in hopes of a safer journey in numbers. We all got out of the caravans and started to position ourselves in ways that made sense. Generally, adventurers that were sporting shabbier looking equipment would stand further towards the back to directly protect the caravan and to hold off any monsters that managed to break past the front line of defense. Then, there would be the rest of the adventurers, Randal included, who take on the brunt of the attack head on, showing any enemy that attempts to mess with Caravan who’s the boss.

Something was odd though, normally, Roaring wolves tended to hunt at night, and with such a large caravan size, it seemed like they would not attack without a good reason. When the wolves finally launched themselves at the caravan on attack, they worked hard to attack the merchants more so than the adventurer’s that were aiming for their necks. Randal couldn’t stop the numerous wolves but trusted that he would be able to pull his weight in the battle. Instead of letting some of the wolves sneakily dash past him, Randal was able to grab onto the tails of two wolves and pull them back into him, swinging them around a little, before using his bodyweight to slam them into the ground. This stunned them, giving him a moment to look around and observe the chaos that was ensuing, the weaker looking adventurers were trying their darndest to prevent the wolves from claiming the merchants’ lives - which seemed to be their primary target, while some other wolves were gnawing at the wheels of the caravan.

“Ah! Help!” A voice cried out from behind the caravan. The chaos caused by the Roaring Wolves was not dying down, as howls echoed into the sky, all of us felt the hairs at the back of our heads stand. Roaring Wolves were called as such because they had a certain peculiarity, they often howled to let surrounding enemies know that they had found prey and were in need of help. Soon, more beasts would be coming and there was no way to tell how long we had before we were swarmed by monsters.

The minutes ticked on, the wolves that Randal had thrown to the ground were getting back up, fortunately they were still dazed. Members of the caravan party were trying their best to hold the wolves off but it seemed that they had already pushed them back. Fortunately, none of the players had died yet, there was still fight left in them and they were not ready to give up.

One particular adventurer of note, boasted cosmetically dyed blue hair - when we were told that we were trapped in the game, the administrator had reverted everyone’s faces and bodies to that of their living ones. The thought of that made Randal lose focus, thinking about the fact that his living body, still alive somewhere in the real world, was likely drying up into a husk, being pumped with the bare necessities to ensure that bodily function could continue, not ensuring that it was getting the exercise its muscles needed nor the excess nutrients to sustain a “healthy” lifestyle. If anything, it was probably laying in a hospital bed somewhere surrounded by family members that visited once in a while.

Once again morning had come for Randal. The light pierced through the canopy of the trees in streaks of gold against the harsh and dark backdrop of the Forest's more shadowy depths. Looking out the window after a restful night, Randal noticed that he had received a notification dated a little before he had come to the Town of Flora.

The invitation was tagged by Poseidon - The Greek God of the Sea. It seemed that by reaching Foraging Rank 2, Randal had become eligible for a test amongst the gods. A challenge to test his mettle and to prove that he was worthy to receive their blessing. Honestly, it all seemed a little pompous in Randal mind, but the blessing would be good. It would probably serve him well in his days as a Chef. Looking out for new materials was one of the many passions he could proudly say he enjoyed. The invitation details more or less the fact that recipients of this notification were welcome to visit an area within the confines of Olympus - the seventeenth floor. He offers that domain as an area for participants of the Challenge to take on, on the condition that it was cared for and maintained as a result.

Randal was both annoyed at the high-mighty nature that gods tended to take with those that were seen as mortals but there was no chance that he was going to miss this golden opportunity. This was an opportunity to explore new lands and to take on new challenges. He hoped desperately that this challenge as a Forager at least centered around foraging and did not require him to take on the twelve labors like that of standard Greek mythology.

Paying for his room as he made his way down the wooden steps of the inn which he stayed at, he made sure to say goodbye to Kagamine and Issela before making his way to the teleportation circle. The journey was going to be a fairly long one, but with the sign just starting to make its way from the starting line and horizon, Randal had much time to lose.

His first destination would be Aruyt - for that was where the teleportation circle would be found. Randal had to brave the long trek from the Town of Flora which was a sub-settlement. He quickly found some Merchant Faune who would be making the track and negotiated. A spot on the wagon would make it far more relaxing and all he had to do in exchange was provide some protection to the caravans. It seemed like a fair deal to Randal and the merchant so they quickly shook on it and the ride commenced soon after all the cargo was loaded up.

There was no chance that Randal would be able to extend his rest in the caravan, the bumps along the roads made it near impossible to find a comfortable position in which he would be able to lie, much less the fact that with the cargo all around him, would it be likely that he was going to find the space needed to make himself comfortable either. Nonetheless, it took far less mental effort to sit there, than to walk on his own through the forest.

Randal could overhear conversations sparking up and laughter coming and going in the wind from the merchants, but they spoke in a language that Randal himself found unfamiliar. Nonetheless, it felt good to hear them chattering away, it made the all too often lonely journey’s a little less so. Something pricked at his senses however, it seemed like something was buzzing around, prowling in the woods. To Randal, not necessarily a battle-hardened warrior, he started to expect that something was coming towards them, stalking them, ready to pounce.

  7.  Day 42 (64 exp total)

With each new day that dawned, Randal found himself at the crossroads of contemplation, a chance to take inventory of the intricate threads that composed the tapestry of his life. It was a moment to bear witness to the dichotomy between abundance and lack, a delicate interplay of existence that stretched beyond the confines of his culinary haven.

In the realm of his kitchen, Randal held the power to weave flavors together in ways that were as unique as the dawn itself. The canvas of his creations was vast and boundless, awaiting his touch to transform it into a symphony of tastes that had never before graced anyone's palate. Yet, alongside this infinite potential existed the siren call of the familiar, the comfort of recipes that had stood the test of time.

Within his heart, a battle raged between innovation and tradition. The allure of crafting a tapestry of flavors that danced on the precipice of the unknown beckoned him forward. Yet, the safety of the known, the aroma of familiar scents that had caressed his senses for so long, whispered to him from the depths of memory.

Fear, that intangible specter, cast its shadow over Randal's choices. The prospect of change, of altering the trajectory of his culinary journey, was a weighty burden that bore upon his shoulders. Emotions, mingling with his ingredients, became part of the very essence of his creations, a reflection of his own internal struggle that perhaps only the discerning palate could perceive.

The future held the promise of both uncertainty and opportunity, a blank canvas upon which Randal's choices would be painted. The tension between embracing innovation and honoring tradition played out within his culinary sanctuary, a narrative that mirrored the larger tapestry of life itself. As Randal stood at this crossroads, he navigated the labyrinth of his thoughts, each step a conscious decision that would ultimately shape the flavors of his destiny.

The passage through the forest was accompanied by the gradual dispersal of trees, revealing a sun-dappled clearing that offered an unobstructed view of Flora Town.

Unlike the bustling town Randal had departed earlier, its streets now presented a contrasting scene, displaying a quieter ambiance as he and Kagamine made their way into its heart. Negotiating the winding roads, hemmed in by the tightly clustered houses, they navigated the labyrinthine paths that guided them towards the town center. With Kagamine leading the way, their journey culminated in a heartfelt reunion.

Upon their arrival, Kagamine was enveloped in a tight embrace by his sister, the bonds of family momentarily overshadowing the harrowing events that had brought them together. Tears were shed and emotions flowed freely, but the intimacy of the moment was one that remained theirs alone, untold and unseen.

Amidst the background of their heartfelt exchange, Randal stood as a silent observer, his presence acknowledged yet not intruding upon their reunion. Issela's voice held a unique allure, a quality that seemed to seep into Randal's ears, carrying with it a sense of enchantment that lingered in his thoughts. While he had originally contemplated seeking lodging for the night within their company, he found himself reconsidering, the urge to respect their privacy and allow them their space gaining prominence.

As Kagamine and Issela shared their words of gratitude and appreciation, Randal's stance shifted to one of quiet resolve. The exchange was brisk and business-like, a transaction carried out with a clear purpose. In return for his assistance, he received the compensation he had earned, a sum of 500 col. Randal's departure was marked by a quiet nod of acknowledgment and a simple "thank you," his intentions veering towards a timely exit from the emotional terrain that lay before him.

Yet, Kagamine's voice once again drew him back, his words resonating with sincerity and gratitude. Randal's smile was genuine, a reflection of the genuine connection that had been forged amidst the trials they had faced together. As the exchange drew to a close, Randal bid them farewell once more, the path to the nearby inn now his destination. The prospect of a restful night beckoned, a haven that would provide reprieve and respite from the day's trials, leaving behind the memories of the forest's embrace and the threads of connection he had woven within its depths.

In the realm of SAO, the passage of time could not be skipped nor accelerated; it remained an unwavering constant. Randal faced the choice of yielding to the embrace of sleep amidst the forest's embrace or resigning himself to a state of semi-consciousness, a vigilant watchfulness that strained his senses. Amidst the nocturnal symphony of the forest, his ears struggled to distinguish between the myriad sounds that echoed through the darkness. The rustle of leaves, the distant calls of creatures, and the hushed murmurs of nature woven together into an auditory tapestry that challenged his attempts at precision listening.

Amidst the enveloping soundscape, the forest thrived with an energy that was uniquely its own, a lively ecosystem that came alive with a vigor that rivaled the vibrancy of the daylight hours. In this nocturnal cacophony, discerning threats from benign noises proved to be a challenge, though a lack of imminent danger provided a modicum of solace. As the night wore on, Kagamine succumbed to the embrace of sleep, his form a testament to the tranquility that had settled over their makeshift resting place.

Unbeknownst to Randal, the first rays of dawn gradually pierced through the dense canopy above, casting delicate tendrils of light that illuminated the forest floor. With the gradual ascent of the sun, Randal stirred from his own state of half-slumber, the soft caress of light filtering through the leaves serving as an unobtrusive alarm. Rubbing his eyes, he turned his attention to Kagamine, the touch of his prodding serving as a gentle wake-up call.

The daybreak brought with it a sense of renewal, a fresh chapter in their journey unfolding before them. Randal contemplated the notion of returning to the Town of Flora, where a comfortable room awaited him, a haven far removed from the rustic experience of camping in the forest. Sleep had eluded him during their time beneath the canopy, leaving him with an unfulfilled yearning for rest. As the forest basked in the soft glow of dawn, Randal's decision was clear – it was time to move forward, to seek the comfort of shelter and the prospect of rejuvenation that awaited them beyond the verdant embrace of the forest.

"Kagamine!" Randal's voice carried through the forest once more, though this time a touch softer, laced with an undercurrent of caution. He was mindful of any potential eavesdroppers who might have been drawn by the previous exchange.

Emerging from his concealed position, Kagamine stepped into view, his presence a welcome reassurance amidst the aftermath of the encounter. With a hesitant query, Kagamine sought confirmation that the struggle had reached its conclusion, that the threat of the Faultwarren Bandits was finally vanquished. Randal's response came in measured words, recounting the brief yet intense battle that had led to the Faultwarren Leader's ultimate defeat. The recounting was marked by a touch of solemnity, the reality of virtual combat underscored by the efficiency with which the encounter had been resolved.

With the dust settled, Randal extended the proposition of moving forward, his readiness to continue evident. However, the tumultuous events of the day had taken their toll on Kagamine, rendering his nerves momentarily frazzled. In a departure from their original plan, Kagamine voiced a request to remain where they were until the sun's ascent above the horizon, a respite from the darkness that had shrouded their surroundings.

Acknowledging Kagamine's plea for a brief respite, Randal began to make preparations for a makeshift rest. His movements were deliberate, carving out a space amidst the grassy expanse where they could find solace. Kagamine, for his part, seemed content to embrace the simplicity of the moment, settling onto the ground with a sense of ease that belied the tension that had marked their recent ordeal.

The forest's quietude enveloped them, a gentle symphony of nature's melodies providing the backdrop to their brief reprieve. The contrast between their circumstances and the tranquility of the forest underscored the complexity of their roles within the virtual world. As the sun's first rays began to cast their gentle glow upon the horizon, Randal and Kagamine found themselves in a liminal space, suspended between the remnants of their past and the uncertain terrain of the future.

As events unfolded around him, Randal could have attributed his current advantageous position to luck, yet he recognized that true danger was a distant shadow, unlikely to darken his doorstep. Amidst the turmoil of the day's events, an undercurrent of unease coursed through his emotions. While he held dominion over this particular engagement, his thoughts lingered on the tales of peril and betrayal that seemed to cast their ominous cloud over higher floors.

With a watchful eye, Randal navigated the challenge before him. The disparity in levels between himself and the roving mobs afforded him a sense of security, a buffer against imminent harm. Yet, the whispers of grim fates and treacherous encounters could not be entirely disregarded. Those stories emerged from somewhere, the fruits of real-world experiences that had taken place beyond the confines of the virtual realm. Randal was resolved to steer clear of the web of intrigue that wove itself through the higher floors.

With the leader of the Faultwarren Bandits finally succumbing to his unyielding grasp, Randal emerged victorious from their struggle. She had fought valiantly, but ultimately her efforts were in vain. As he stood once more upon the grassy floor of the forest, a moment of respite beckoned. Randal's gaze swept the surroundings, an instinctive scan for any lingering threats. A call for Kagamine pierced the silence, echoing through the trees in search of its intended recipient.

The vocabulary of Randal's thoughts danced with hues of caution and contemplation, a nuanced palette that mirrored the complexities of his emotions. Amidst the virtual world's tapestry, threads of uncertainty and resolve were woven into a fabric that bore witness to his journey.

Amidst the rustling foliage and the symphony of nature's sounds, Randal and the Faultwarren Leader found themselves entangled in a struggle that transcended the boundaries of the virtual realm. The forest floor, cool and grassy, bore witness to their clash of wills. The leader's attempts to break free from Randal's grip were futile, each exertion met with the unyielding resistance of his strength.

Locked in a vice-like stranglehold, the Faultwarren Leader's body was rendered immobile, her attempts to retaliate met with the impenetrable barrier that Randal's fortitude presented. He held the upper hand, each sinew of his virtual form contributing to the unyielding pressure he exerted upon her. The struggle was taking its toll on both combatants, the strain evident in their virtual frames.

Despite the relentless exertion of their efforts, Randal remained steadfast, his grasp unrelenting. The contest of strength and determination continued, a race to the bottom that favored Randal. The Faultwarren Leader's health bar dwindled, a testament to the potency of his hold. The very fabric of their confrontation seemed to bend under the weight of their struggle, the forest watching in solemn silence.

Kagamine, an unseen presence lurking in the shadows, remained concealed behind a veil of darkness. His position remained a mystery to Randal, a testament to the effectiveness of the cover provided by the forest's obscurity. The darkness was both ally and adversary, a shield for Kagamine but also a potential means for the Faultwarren Leader to locate him once her encounter with Randal reached its inevitable conclusion.

As the seconds stretched into moments, the forest bore witness to the ebb and flow of their clash. The shifting dynamics, the interplay of strength and strategy, unfolded like a drama upon the natural stage. Each movement, each calculated exertion, was a note in the symphony of their struggle, a testament to the intricacies of their roles within the virtual realm. The outcome remained uncertain, a delicate balance that could tip at any moment, casting one of them into the abyss of defeat.

As the clash between Randal and the formidable Faultwarren Leader ignited, the forest bore witness to a dance of combat steeped in darkness and urgency. Randal's apprehension proved well-founded; the leader exhibited a mastery over the forest terrain that surpassed his own. Despite his agility and prowess, Randal found himself grappling with the nuances of combat in the shrouded obscurity. Unlike the majority of adventurers who wielded long-range weapons, Randal's reliance on close combat was a challenge in the dim-lit forest. Each punch he aimed came fraught with the risk of encountering obstacles that could thwart his efforts.

Conversely, the Faultwarren Leader navigated the darkness with an uncanny precision. Her attacks unfurled with a seamless fluidity, an exquisite dance of skill that left Randal awestruck. The forest itself seemed to bend to her will, as if an extension of her formidable prowess. As blows and strikes intertwined in a symphony of action, Randal grappled with the dissonance between his expectations and the stark reality of their confrontation.

The resounding impact of the Faultwarren Leader's attack jolted Randal, the shockwave reverberating through his virtual form. The deduction of his health bar was swift and severe, a stark reminder of the perilous stakes that underpinned their duel. The realization that a single, meticulously executed strike could inflict such substantial damage sent a chill down Randal's spine.

Gravity reclaimed Randal as the leader's attack lifted him momentarily from the ground, suspending him in a whirl of chaotic motion. His descent was swift, landing him with a jolt that reverberated through his being. The phantom pain echoed more in his mind than his virtual form, a testament to the immersive power of the virtual world.

As the battle raged on, a sense of urgency intensified. Randal's strategy was informed by the unforgiving reality of his situation – he couldn't afford to absorb many more blows of that magnitude. His resolve solidified, a fusion of caution and determination. With each exchange, the intricacies of combat unfolded, a testament to the complexities woven into the game's mechanics.

The forest bore witness to this duel of wills, the clash of champions enveloped by the shroud of night. Their virtual forms danced amidst the trees, every strike a testament to the fervor that coursed through their virtual veins. In the delicate equilibrium between strategy and reaction, their fates hung precariously, a tenuous balance that would ultimately tip the scales in favor of one or the other.

As the daunting prospect of landing a strike from a distance lingered, Randal's decision was swift and decisive. Drawing upon his innate strength, he anchored his feet into the forest floor and propelled himself forward with unwavering determination. His hand extended before him, a beacon of intent, he hurtled toward the Faultwarren Leader with an unyielding purpose – to grapple her, to seize control of the conflict through sheer force of will.

The Faultwarren Leader reacted with a surge of instinctual agility, attempting to evade the oncoming charge. Yet, Randal's maneuver bore the essence of surprise, a calculated shift in direction that defied expectations. In a breathtaking moment, he pivoted, altering his trajectory in a fluid motion that left the leader momentarily vulnerable.

His outstretched arms ensnared her in an unyielding embrace, a vise-like grip that immobilized her form in midair. Randal's arms and legs coiled around her, their virtual forms intertwining in a fierce entanglement. The resolute strength of his grip was undeniable, a testament to his resolve to secure control over their confrontation.

As his hold on the Faultwarren Leader solidified, a surge of tension crackled through the air. The virtual world bore witness to their struggle, the shifting dynamics of power encapsulated in this climactic grapple. Randal's unwavering resolve clashed with the leader's determination, the outcome of their confrontation hinging upon this pivotal moment.

The Faultwarren Leader's health bar plummeted, a reflection of Randal's dominance in this intimate encounter. His tenacity had translated into a tangible advantage, a tangible manifestation of his determination. Their virtual forms seemed to meld, locked in a struggle that transcended the constraints of code and mechanics. It was a contest of wills, a dance of aggression and determination that resonated throughout the forest.

As time seemed to stretch, the forest bore witness to this clash of champions, the interplay of power and strategy unfolding within its shadows. The outcome of their struggle remained uncertain, a testament to the complexity of their roles within the virtual realm, where every decision and action had far-reaching consequences.

  14. Day 41 (75 exp total)

Their journey continued, the moments stretching into an enigmatic tapestry woven by the intertwining of shadows and purpose. Yet, the tranquility was abruptly shattered by the sound of pursuit – the rhythmic cadence of rapid footsteps closing in. Randal's skill at searching and navigation offered little solace in the face of this sudden threat. The pursuer exhibited an uncanny prowess, matching their pace with an eerie precision that hinted at a profound familiarity with the terrain.

Realization dawned like a chilling gust – their pursuer was not merely swift, but driven by an inexorable fury. Whoever this relentless figure was, they possessed a determination that brooked no hesitation, no consideration for the perils of the forest floor. Panic wasn't an option; Randal's decision weighed heavily. There was no escaping this pursuer, and it was clear that the leader of the Faultwarren Bandits had arrived with vengeance in her heart.

With grim resolve, Randal prepared to stand his ground. The time spent in the forest had granted him the boon of rejuvenated energy and restored health, a vital advantage as he faced this formidable adversary. As the figure emerged from the shadows, the air was fraught with tension, thick with animosity.

"You!" The voice that echoed through the night dripped with venom, every syllable a promise of retribution. The source of the voice materialized into a figure, a woman driven by a fiery rage that seemed to radiate from her very being. The very embodiment of Kagamine's warnings stood before Randal, a force to be reckoned with.

Her declaration held no room for ambiguity – she had suffered losses at his hands, and her wrath knew no bounds. Randal's resolve held firm even as the seething anger in her eyes promised violence and agony. The chilling reality that this confrontation was inexorable, that their paths had crossed irrevocably, settled upon him.

The woman's words bore witness to a past fraught with conflict, a history of conflict that had brought them to this precipice. Randal grappled with a tumult of emotions, the weight of his choices resting heavily upon his conscience. The forest seemed to hold its breath, caught in the magnetic pull of their confrontation.

As the moments stretched, Randal navigated the complex web of morality and necessity. Kagamine's village had suffered under the yoke of the Faultwarren Bandits, their actions causing immeasurable pain. While their humanity couldn't be denied, the sense of justice in Randal's actions fortified his stance. He had a responsibility, to ensure that no more harm befell those who had already suffered.

In the charged stillness, the decision loomed large. Randal's hand tightened on his weapon, his gaze unwavering as he braced himself for the clash that was inevitable. The duel of convictions, the melding of fates, played out beneath the shadowed canopy. The forest bore witness to their reckoning, the choices and consequences that rippled through the tapestry of their virtual existence.

Randal pushed Kagamine aside and wanted to leave him out of this fight if he could help it.

As the veil of night draped over the forest, obscuring Randal's vision, the weight of responsibility rested heavily on his shoulders. He understood the need for caution, for even his battle-hardened expertise couldn't guarantee immunity from unseen threats. With Kagamine by his side, his primary focus was safeguarding the boy's well-being, ensuring that nothing hindered their progress toward reuniting him with his sister.

Sensing the encroaching darkness, Randal suggested a pause for the night. Resting amidst the shadows would shield them from potential ambushes and allow them to regroup. His concern, however, lay not in his own vulnerability but rather in Kagamine's safety. If anything were to befall the boy, their mission would be derailed, a prospect Randal was determined to prevent.

Kagamine's unease regarding the prospect of spending the night in the jungle was palpable. His apprehension mirrored the uncertainties that accompanied the virtual world's reality. In response, he urged Randal to press onward, invoking a rare streak of confidence rooted in his familiarity with the forest trails. The Faultwarren Bandits' reign of terror had transformed these paths, but Kagamine's former knowledge offered a glimmer of hope in their endeavor.

Drawn to Kagamine's newfound resolve, Randal embraced the momentum. Kagamine's willingness to lead, to draw from his own experiences, bolstered Randal's own determination. A mutual understanding seemed to pass between them, unspoken yet palpable – a shared goal, an unyielding pursuit of the task at hand.

Amidst the shroud of darkness, their journey took on a renewed energy, each step punctuated by the undercurrent of companionship and purpose. Randal's vigilance persisted, a silent guardian who prioritized Kagamine's well-being above all else. The forest around them held secrets untold, but in the unity of their shared mission, they found a beacon of resilience, an unwavering commitment to surmount whatever challenges lay ahead.

The strain of battle and the harried escape had taken their toll on Randal. Fatigue tugged at his muscles, and weariness crept into his bones. Yet, the vibrant embrace of the forest beckoned to him, urging him to linger in the open expanse. A sense of yearning filled him; he desired to soak in the tranquility that nature offered, a stark contrast to the relentless urgency of their recent trials.

Despite the pressing need to reunite Kagamine with his sister, Randal allowed himself a momentary respite. The forest's gentle embrace provided a sanctuary of calm, a refuge from the tumultuous events that had transpired. With each step, he reveled in the gradual recovery of his energy, his pace unhurried, a deliberate act of self-care amidst the verdant splendor.

As the sun began its descent toward the distant horizon, Randal's heart swelled with appreciation for the beauty that surrounded him. The warm hues of the sunset painted the sky, casting a golden glow that filtered through the trees. Randal's gaze swept across the landscape, savoring the sight of the forest as it basked in the soft, amber light.

While Randal found solace in the slow-paced stroll, he was acutely aware of the challenges that nighttime travel within the forest entailed. Unlike open plains where moonlight could guide one's way, the dense canopy of trees obscured the stars and offered no reprieve from the enveloping darkness. Randal knew from experience that traversing through such an environment at night would be an arduous task, one he wished to avoid.

His adeptness in navigating through the forest granted him an advantage. The skill honed over time enabled him to move with relative ease, even in the absence of daylight. Today, this proficiency proved to be a valuable asset, amplifying his appreciation for the foresight he had developed.

For Kagamine, however, the absence of such a skill rendered him vulnerable to the encroaching night. His limitations highlighted the disparities within the virtual world, underscoring the significance of each individual's abilities. As Randal continued his leisurely stroll, he pondered the implications of their diverse experiences and capabilities, a reminder that the virtual realm was a realm of both opportunity and challenge.

With a well-oiled pulley system, the drawbridge lowered smoothly, a testament to Randal's prior observation. As it descended, Kagamine's eagerness could be felt through his actions, his restless energy a stark contrast to the newfound calm that enveloped them both.

Randal couldn't help but chuckle at Kagamine's evident excitement. "It seems you're ready to get back to your sister, huh?"

Kagamine's response was tinged with a hint of anxiety. His voice trembled slightly as he shared his concerns, recounting the formidable leader of the Faultwarren Bandits. The imposing figure had yet to make an appearance since they had left their prison cells, casting a lingering shadow of uncertainty over the Town of Flora. Kagamine's apprehension was unmistakable, his imagination conjuring scenarios of vengeance and impending turmoil.

Randal's empathy shone through as he offered reassurance. His voice held a soothing quality as he addressed Kagamine's fears, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. "I understand your concerns, Kagamine. Your safety and the well-being of the town are both important to me. Rest assured, after I reunite you with your sister, I'll return to address the leader of the Faultwarren Bandits. We'll put an end to their thieving ways once and for all."

Randal's conviction held firm; he harbored no illusions about the leader's prowess. The henchmen had proven to be formidable adversaries, yet the leader's strength was unlikely to be insurmountable. A flicker of determination danced in his eyes as he pictured the impending confrontation, fueled by his commitment to safeguarding the town and those who called it home.

As the drawbridge settled into place, a symbolic gateway stood open before them. The promise of Kagamine's reunion with his sister beckoned, while Randal's resolute pledge to restore peace and security resonated with every step he took. With the impending clash on the horizon, their destinies converged, intertwining within the complex tapestry of the virtual realm.

Randal wanted to execute the Bandit right there and then, however luck fell on the side of the Bandit as he had just enough sense to roll out of the way as quickly as possible, imagine a ball rolling away from a the swiping and precise paw of a cat. There was no way for the Bandit to escape in the end but he had no choice but to try. He scrambled for safety away from the coordinated strikes of Kagamine and Randal.

“What the heck!” He thought to himself, his sense of camaraderie faltering with each step he took. Now he was all alone. Each and everyone of his friends/crewmates now eliminated from the game, there was not much left that he could do. As pressure and fear crept in like an open stove with no flame, death was approaching and the Bandit knew it. There was little that he could do, running away rarely worked, and to be honest. If survived and let them leave, the leader would probably not let him off the hook either. What would she say if she came to find that he was a traitor who abandoned the cause simply to save his own life. Nonetheless, his thoughts were cut short when he was tripped, whether by Randal, Kagamine, or some random object on the floor. His body fell faster than his cognition.

With an uncanny sense of timing, Randal pounced on the Faultwarren Bandit as he struggled to rise, delivering a relentless flurry of blows. Each strike landed with precision, a symphony of calculated force that left no room for escape. The bandit's health dwindled, teetering on the precipice of oblivion. Randal's unyielding determination paid off, and the bandit succumbed, dissolving into a cascade of radiant fragments akin to stardust.

Amidst the luminous aftermath, a palpable sense of relief washed over both Randal and Kagamine. Their arduous struggle had finally culminated in success, liberating them from the confines of the castle's trial. It was a sensation akin to freedom, a release from the relentless tension that had gripped them. In a moment that transcended the boundaries of the virtual world, Randal and Kagamine shared a jubilant embrace. The warmth of camaraderie, an inexplicable connection forged through shared challenges, enveloped them both.

The marvel of Kagamine's lifelike emotions lingered in the air, a testament to the intricacies woven into the fabric of the game's reality. Randal's contemplations swirled, pondering the essence of these NPCs – were they merely strings of code or something more profound? The weight of this question tugged at his consciousness, challenging him to discern the boundary between artificial constructs and genuine existence.

As the dust settled, the once-congested entrance of the castle now lay devoid of Faultwarren Bandits. With the path cleared, Randal and Kagamine embarked on the task of lowering the drawbridge that marked their passage to freedom. The journey back to the Town of Flora beckoned, the promise of reunification between Kagamine and his sister offering a beacon of hope and fulfillment. The treacherous odyssey they had navigated was etched into their shared history, a testament to their resilience and a reminder that within the confines of the virtual realm, profound connections could be formed, transcending the boundaries of mere data.

As Randal dashed around the corner, a palpable sense of relief washed over him upon spotting Kagamine nestled where he had instructed. Kagamine’s trust in Randal had endured as a result of the time they had spent together, thankfully he was still in position and had not gotten himself into any other trouble. Positioned with his back to Kagamine, Randal poised himself for the impending clash, his instincts razor-sharp.

The Faultwarren Bandit pursued with relentless determination, swinging a weapon with malicious intent. Randal's agility saved him as he deftly evaded the attack, seizing an opportune moment. Swift as lightning, his hand snaked out, gripping the bandit's collar. In one seamless motion, Randal hoisted the bandit over his head and placed him atop the foe's back, a human barricade between them and Kagamine.

The command resonated like a battle cry – "Now!" Kagamine, unflinchingly steadfast, responded to Randal's directive. With sword and shield at the ready, Kagamine launched into action, his strike poised with a precision born of countless battles. A resounding collision echoed as Kagamine's blade connected with the Faultwarren Bandit's head, the impact causing a momentary stagger and inflicting a substantial blow.

Amidst the fray, a spark of hope ignited within Randal's heart. The potent combination of Kagamine's calculated strike and the damage it dealt held the promise of ending this protracted struggle. It was a realization that their synergy had the potential to transcend Randal's individual limitations. As the bandit reeled from the blow, the scene painted a vivid tableau of unity and triumph against the odds.

The air seemed to shimmer with intensity as the seconds ticked by. Every calculated choice, every movement, had converged to this climactic juncture. Randal's determination surged as he unleashed yet another of his formidable attacking skills, a torrent of fists raining down upon the Faultwarren Bandit nearest to him. The dwindling numbers of adversaries fueled his growing confidence; with only two remaining, their swift defeat seemed imminent. However, a niggling realization persisted: despite his heightened morale, the pace at which his energy regenerated remained a source of concern. The final bandit would likely prove to be a formidable challenge, given Randal's current damage output and the opponent's tenacious mitigation.

Within the intricate fabric of the game mechanics, players' damage stats held an unconventional limit, rendering them reliant on the enigmatic "Sword Arts" bestowed by the game itself. This dynamic made NPCs the sole entities capable of attaining exceptionally high damage stats. An idea sparked in Randal's mind – Kagamine, the nervous NPC ally, could potentially tip the scales in his favor. A partnership with Kagamine held the promise of swift victory, with minimal risk to their collective safety.

Randal executed the intricate maneuvers of a chosen Sword Art, culminating in the decisive elimination of the Faultwarren Bandit he had relentlessly targeted. With calculated timing, he seized the opening to dart past the remaining foe, dashing towards the corridor where Kagamine had been instructed to seek refuge. Hope mingled with urgency; Randal yearned for Kagamine's unscathed presence, hopeful that the NPC had remained out of harm's way while awaiting his return.

As the suspenseful seconds stretched, Randal's heart pounded with anticipation. Each step he took held the promise of a reunion that could tilt the balance of the skirmish in their favor. The intricate dance between his strategic choices, the ebb and flow of energy, and the unpredictable dynamics of the game's world converged in this pivotal moment. The final showdown awaited, and Randal's every move held the potential to shape the outcome, as he pressed forward with unwavering resolve.

As Randal ascended the stairs with purpose, his keen eyes scanned the surroundings, searching for that crucial opening amidst the Faultwarren Bandits' ranks. Opportunity presented itself as one bandit lagged behind, isolated from the group. Randal's instincts kicked in, and in a swift reversal, he pivoted, unleashing a fierce strike directed right at the bandit's eyes. The brutality of the maneuver resulted in a gruesome spectacle. Though the attack induced some measure of blindness and impaired accuracy, it was a calculated risk that eliminated the bandit from the fight.

Despite his tactical successes, an undercurrent of concern began to gnaw at Randal. The power he was expanding in his relentless assault was draining his energy at an alarming pace, outstripping his regenerative abilities. The looming threat of diminishing resources weighed heavily on his mind, amplifying the urgency of the situation. Each move, while potent, came at a cost that was steadily taking its toll.

The disappearance of yet another Faultwarren Bandit shook the resolve of the remaining adversaries. One of the two hesitated, momentarily unsure of their next move. However, the other remained resolute, lunging with a well-aimed, sweeping motion that connected with Randal's foot, inflicting another dent to his health bar. The silver lining was that the bandits were not inflicting substantial damage either, a fortunate aspect that allowed Randal to continue pushing forward despite the accumulating strain.

Amidst the skirmish, Randal's thoughts raced, grappling with the delicate balance between his offensive prowess and dwindling reserves. Every decision he made, every maneuver executed, bore the weight of potential consequence. And yet, the flicker of determination in his eyes burned brighter than ever, a testament to his unwavering commitment to overcoming the odds and emerging victorious from this trying encounter.

Reacting to the slash across his chest, Randal leapt towards the Faultwarren Bandit, hands open reaching to grab the Bandit’s head. His fingers seemed to tighten with superhuman strength, crashing the Bandits skull and forcing the character to disintegrate into pieces. As the fading blue light started to disappear, the other Bandits seemed to roar slightly more ferociously and aggressively approached Randal. Two of them were sporting injuries from Randal’s last attack, and the other was perfectly fine.

Unfortunately, they started to approach with my strategy this time, they tried to surround Randal, but Randal did what he could to avoid being encircled. He smirked at their attempts, knowing full well that they would not be able to catch him even in the slightest. Nonetheless, that meant that he would need to slowly maneuver his way out from the encirclement.

Randal leapt up the main stairs to get away from the encirclement to lead them away from the doors. Randal and Kagamine had not discussed this part of the plan, but if Kagamine were able to bring the gate down on his own, Randal and him would probably be able to run out and not get caught by the Faultwarren Bandits.
