  1. Spires of rock dotted the grassy plains, and the sound of water could be heard more clearly as one drew further away from the starting city. Pools of water glittered under the sun, held in structures that blossomed out over a vast canyon, suspended in a manner normally impossible by known physics. Such was the norm in a game.

A woman clad in white and red stood in the distance, billowing pink hair like a cape, her own reflection smiling against the rippling water in front of her. The yellow question mark that floated above her head was the only hint that she might not be a player; indeed, this npc turned and with her preset dialog gave a smile.

"Hello there, perhaps you would like to duel with me?" She sounded friendly enough, and the duel icon stood waiting for acceptance or decline. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to introduce oneself to the npc. A duel wouldn't harm the player, after all.

  2. With one swift motion that would make any user doubt the existence of pixels, the pink-haired woman swung her arm out, a wooden sword materializing in the palm of her hand. As if mirrored, the wooden sword found itself in Tor's own hand. With a short twist of the wrist, Pi's own blade was flipped across the backside of her hand, swinging a full circle before lightly settling back in the grip of her gloved fingers. The duel was accepted at his words, and her smile continued to beam warmly, "Perhaps just a warm up exercise would be fun. How about you go first then, sir?"

Pi wants you to strike first! We are not using any battle system for this duel, just roleplay out what you'd like. Do one sword attack, and try describing how it's done. Will you crouch and launch from low down, or perhaps leap forward and strike down? Stab? Side-swipe? There are a lot of ways the battle can go! Be descriptive so that I can picture the move in my head!

OOC - These are some comments about your post! These are just suggestions that may help you in the future.

The good: It looks like you're pretty comfortable with roleplaying and describing things! I enjoy seeing his thoughts and awareness of the environment and his existence within it. Since you're already skilled at rping, I'll go ahead and nit-pick on details.

    The tips:

    • You don't need quite so many ellpsis (those "..." periods). I do like that you're giving pause as it gives a more dramatic effect, but too many ... in a paragraph makes it more clunky.

    You could try something like:

-he couldn't help but wonder if she was a person stuck here too. What if her fate was the same as his? To survive here.. Or to die trying.

By using ? and , as regular sentences, you're still able to add that pause effect.

    • Random commas ahoy!

The breeze of the wind caressed his face, and made him take a deep breath.

    --

The smile she gave him as she asked for a duel, couldn't have been better displayed.

You don't need a comma in there, the sentence itself is short enough that it flows just fine without the comma. This is something that a ton of people do, so it can be hard to get used to at first. Take out a comma after typing it, re-read the sentence, and see how it sounds.

  3. The npc gave a warm smile at the acceptance, a long wooden sword instantly materializing within the palm of her hand. As if mirrored, the same wooden sword found itself in Zelrius' hand.

"Do not fear, I shall go easy on you. How about we just do a warm up?" It was evident that this npc wasn't out for a full on duel, but more as a tutorial for those new to the world. A generic npc to be sure, but good practice regardless. "How about you go first?"

The good: The way you portray Zelrius is beginning to show his personality and the type of person he is. That's great! I can't wait to see more about him!

    Some tips:

    • Instead of colored text, try using "quotations" for speech. When you use colored text, I can't tell if Zelrius is speaking or thinking because I've seen it go either way before. But quotations will let everyone know instantly that he is speaking to others. You could color the text as well as use quotes at the same time, that'd be fine! Use a quote " to show where he begins speaking, and a second " to show the end of his verbal words.

    • Might need to clarify a bit:

But you're an NPC, Can they duel?

The first part makes me think that Zelrius is speaking to Pi. The second part sounds like he is thinking the question to himself. Since you used both in the same sentence, it's a little hard to tell if he's speaking to her directly or not.

You could work it like this: "But you're an NPC, can you even duel?" This directly addresses the npc by using "you" instead of "they". I believe you were trying to address npcs as a whole, but because Zelrius is talking specifically to Pi, that makes it a bit trickier to do.

You could also try this: "But you're an NPC." Zelrius said with a tinge of curiosity, wondering if NPCs were even capable of dueling. This both addresses Pi and shows us a little about what Zelrius is thinking and feeling about.

  6. Welcome to SAO! Something like a familiar would have to be obtained through an event (earned by roleplaying, basically). I don't see why not on a music skill? Life skills haven't been fully fleshed out yet, so just be open to future changes if a change does occur.

Make sure to read the tutorial!

Also read how to make a journal post.

If you have other questions, feel free to ask in the OOC (out of character) subforum or that shout box up on the top of the page! This subforum is for journal posts. There's also a section to introduce yourself and greet others as well, so take a look around as you please!

  7. My thoughts on how skills should level are still about the same... through some kind of system where you allot points from leveling up/RP.

Aside from a starter skill or two, skills are obtained through quests, and the skills themselves don't need to be leveled since the battle system (put into the tutorial just today) only uses skills to activate or not. Skill quests would be available on different floors, which would mean that you have to be lvl 20 to access the quest on that floor, etc, so people have to work for them via rp to obtain more skills.

If we want to implement crafting, we could have some of the skill quests involve multiple steps, including crafting items. We could totally create a crafting system for this.

For things like hunger/durability/sleep, it seems like it'd be a lot of hassle to keep track of : x And roleplaying having to sleep seems a bit bland. I'd rather focus on character progression in terms of mentality/psychology/plot over immersion where we have to go into all the tiny details of the game system's mechanics, which, while cool, isn't terribly practical in an RP environment as it could bog things down.

Equipment is something I don't want to go into all that much as it'd further complicate the battle system, which I want to keep as simplified as possible. Items are probably doable, but would mean someone has to check up on who has what and that they're using it appropriately and taking items out when it's been used in RP. There could be a rare item to rejuvenate health, or to teleport out of battle.

  8. « Battles »

Battles against field monsters are roleplayed by the players and are not subject to the battle system. You may use the system if you wish, but this is optional.

A battle against other players or in special events, however, will require the use of the battle system.

The battle system follows a turn-based dice method. To use a skill, create a post with the skill's name and effect. YOU MAY NOT EDIT THIS POST. Once you see what number is rolled on that post, create an RP post accordingly. Once you have attempted one skill, it will be the next player's turn to use a skill.

» The dice roll's purpose is to activate a skill. Each skill has a different number requirement to activate.

Ex: Sword skill "Slash" requires a roll of 5 or higher to activate. If the player rolls 1~4, they must rp out a failed attack and it will then be the other player's turn to use a skill.

» You must keep track of your health at the bottom of each post.

» Players can only survive a certain number of hits.

Ex: A lvl 1 player can only take 3 attacks. This is noted by the player on their posts as 3/3 for full health, 2/3 for one hit taken, etc. So if you manage to activate an attack skill three times, then the lvl 1 player is then defeated.

» Different skills have different limitations, cool downs, and effects. Consult the skill guide for details. [not yet available]

    « Player vs. Player »

To determine who goes first, the player with the higher post count gets to decide.

The rest of the battle follows the above system.

    « Boss Battles »

Boss events will follow a similar format, but may have some variations which will be explained at that time.

So we need a) skill list and b) what lvl can survive how much?

  9. I vote we keep the blacklist on chara names without any reservations since character should be a pretty personal thing in this environment and a name could be symbolic to something or mean something personal to the player or who that character is. And I'ma agree with Mythee, guild names I'm not as picky on since it'd be in name only. I'd imagine most people would want to express their creativity and make up their own guild with its own theme for the most part, but if they copy a name then meh *shrug*

  10. A little light flashed on the grey headset as the pale woman set it atop her head, the room before her going black beneath the helm, the gentle buzz of sound coming from its built-in speakers. She took a moment to calm her nerves before settling in, and felt herself freeze in the sudden onslaught of imagery and sound.

The world she had been transported to instantly showed itself off with reaching buildings and stone floors, hints at the land beyond the city peaking through. Nevina let out a breath, grinning widely as she observed the scenery around her. She looked up at the rendered sky above, marveling at how there could possibly be 99 floors above this. The game certainly deserved its hype.

Lifting her hand, she stared in awe as her fingers moved naturally. It was almost hard to believe that this was simply a model in a game responding to her brain. She laughed as she caught a reflection of herself in the water fountain; pink hair tied in a mess of braids at the nape of her neck, golden eyes, short stature.. the only thing that retained her real life self was perhaps the pale glow of her skin.

It took a few tries to run without that awkward gate, and she made quick time in checking the npcs and making her way to the fields outside. What she was really interested in was exploring the landscape which, judging by the first rolling hills of grass and flowing river, wasn't about to disappoint.

It wasn't until she came across her first monster that she realized she had no clue how to fight. The kobold sentinel looked easy enough, its weapon little more than a toothpick with a small steel knob on the end, but when one is playing the character in whole, it's harder to work up the courage to approach it. Nevina edged around it nervously, not wanting to attract its attention, but not wanting to just run away either. She stood awkwardly at the impasse.

  11. So this is my personal character development rp recruitment thread for my character Nevina.

Right now, I'm just looking for one or two rps about getting used to the game. So we could either do a first hunt in an open field, learning how skills are activated/used, etc. Just beginner stuffs 8D

If you're interested in rping with me, just post here and I'll set up a thread : >

  12. Hello all! Since the forums have been fairly stagnant in planning stages, I've decided to do a full on takeover. I will be finalizing the ideas discussed, either accepting what others wanted, or making up my own. The purpose of this is to get things rolling, especially considering that SAO is now airing on tv. The things I decide may not be set in stone, so rules could be changed as we go along and encounter any issues. Or if anyone has any vehement protests, then that can be up for discussion as well.

I will be making a rule/guide book as I finalize rp dynamics, but in the meantime feel free to rp PRE-LOCK status. What this means is that you are role playing as someone logging into a game, and there is absolutely nothing wrong.. yet. So go out and meet people, learn how to use sword skills, explore, etc and introduce your personality.

Once I get things finalized, I will create an rp prompt to initiate the point at which players can no longer log out.

One more caveat is that I am quite busy irl due to getting a new full time job and having to move states + full time graduate school, so my tyrannical takeover is just a temporary thing : >

    UPDATE

Read the guidebook under Tutorials, found here: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=95

  13. One thing I'm worried about is for those who put their skill points into non-battle things. What benefit will they have as a more support-type role since they're going to be worse in battle as a result? It's hard to envision an entire economy XD

  14. Completed rps will naturally float to the bottom of the thread once there's no more posting so I don't think we need to worry about those. It could also give the illusion of greater activity to see all of them on the same page. Plus it's more work to move completed RPs to a subthread, so just seems like a waste of effort.
