  4.                    Sorun continued to hold onto his axe with one hand while swatting at the sand buffeting him with the other, but soon he felt more than the wind and sand. He began to feel some turbulence. He opened his eyes to find that he wasn't attached to the earth anymore, he was now in the air.

Seeing that fall damage was a thing, this was not good in any way whatsoever. He had to get down softly somehow. He was only level one, so fall damage from plenty of potential impacts wouldn't be good for him at all. There just had to be a way to escape a death caused by his reckless decision by getting himself into this mess in the first place. Sand was still buffeting him, but he did what he could to try and look around for something to prevent a nasty fall, like maybe something to grapple with his axe, to be able to hang on tight again.

  5.                                         There had to be a way to expose the stone somehow.

Sorun figured if the sand could slide down, that maybe if he just held onto the handle of his axe, that he wouldn't slip if he used his free hand to try and get the sand to fall like the water of a flowing stream. Just a few swipes and he shook his head at the realization that it would not do. Then the monster began running circles around the edge. Sand started to move, both on the ground, and in the air. "Heh? What's it doing?" He thought aloud. Of course, this curiosity turned into a silent struggle when the winds of the monster's "artificial sandstorm" picked up speed, and more sand. "Yeah, no, this isn't good." Sorun thought as his free hand was now trying to fruitlessly swat away at the fresh clouds of flying sand. It wouldn't be long before he lost grip on the axe or the stone at this rate if he kept holding onto it with only one hand, he might have to climb a bit instead of hanging from it.

  6.                                   The location that the two players arrived at looked suspicious, almost as though it were an arena of sorts. Any player that was perceptive enough could tell that a boss lived here, preying upon anything it could. Of course, it was very likely that the tables would be turned here. While Sorun could easily just follow every step, he had to make sure he didn't hold the attention. He was even notified to try and seek out a rocky ledge to help the two players get out of the arena-like monster habitat for when the battle was done. Problem was, Sorun didn't exactly see any ledges just yet.

Night would slide down the sand, calling out an insult and a taunt at full volume. From the center of the downward dunes came a beast that was clearly agitated by the source of the sound. Well, time to find a good vantage point or two. One for climbing out, and, hopefully, one to try and get a hit against this thing once it's attention would irreversibly be on Night.

Sorun attempted to copy the slide, but when he tried to turn, he ended up slipping on the sand(how exactly does that even happen?) and started fumbling downward. He pulled out his axe and attempted to try and force it into the ground to stop his tumbling descent, though when he did, he still continued sliding downward despite no longer rolling all over as if the game was ragdolling him, but after a few seconds he suddenly stopped with a *Clack!* coming from the direction of his weapon. It had just snagged on something. Well, maybe this could help, if what his axe just hit was stone...but how could he uncover it? There was so much sand!

  7.                   The player would explain a battle plan, one that was more defensive than anything on Sorun's end, while the leading player would take on the most of it and try to keep the target enemy's focus on her, not that he knew whatever the heck it was, he was just going in blind. While that was usually a horrible idea, especially in a case like this, he might make it out alive if he could keep his wits about him, know when to block and when to dodge, that sort of thing. It made sense. Wait for the right opportunity, and strike only when safe to do so. Sounds pretty fair. Sure, it was nothing extra or worthy of significance or recognition, and he knew he wouldn't deserve it if he received it anyway. This little exploit scheme was only a means to an end.

As the journey continued, the player realized that the two didn't even know each others' usernames. "Sorun. My username is Sorun." He answered. "I don't recall meeting you either, in all honesty. Who knows, we could have passed by once and not even noticed." He remarked. Heck, the two could have easily met once and forgotten the day after. The possibilities that not even Sorun was seeing were...well, less than countless, but more than two. Sure to net you more than two nickels. How weird.

  8.                                                     The person, being a player, proceeded to question Sorun's patience. "To be fair, I did kinda try to wait things out too long, so I kinda have to make up for lost time. Can't be going around left in the dust by everyone else to fall to just anything, gotta catch up so I don't stay behind forever...or worse, become a statistic." He noted.
The player would point in the direction of the dustbowl and tell him where she was headed in case he felt like tagging along.

The answer was right in front of him the whole time, he just never noticed it until now, and now he felt a bit stupid because of that. What he needed, was a carry. Carrying isn't often easy, but in certain games, with the right tricks, it could be done. obviously he'd have to let all the planning and most of the action go to this player here if he intended to follow her for a carry, but that was where other realistic advice could come into play, to learn from watching.

Sorun nodded his head, ready to follow. "Fair enough. Lead the way."

  9.                               Sorun's thought process was disrupted by someone telling him the direction of town.
Oh, so he'd just wandered outside the safe zone lost in thought. Wonderful. At least he hadn't aggro'd anything too strong just yet. He blinked.
    "...And?"
He didn't really have the best response, nor could he disagree with his chosen answer. He had to do something, but the question was what. Stretching out his arms and putting his hands behind his head, he resisted the urge to yawn. "I mean, it's not like I've got much to do in there...or, anywhere, really, seeing that I lack the level to take on anything worthwhile...all I need is an exploit, a weakness in the slow grind, something to boost, just enough to get a head start before I get into anything else...but how to do that...that's the problem." He took a deep breath. "After all, I've only got one shot. If I make the wrong move, that's it for me...but I guess I've already made a bit of a mistake wandering out of the safe zone without the stats to stop a monster stronger than me from dealing too much damage, huh?" He added.

  10.                        Sorun was taking a real gamble here, entering the fifth floor like this. Despite the gear he had, it wouldn't help him to survive attacks from level five monsters very well. If he could easily dodge the attacks, he wouldn't have too much to worry about, but he couldn't guarantee that he'd be able to.

He walked around the settlement of Fortaleza for the time being, wondering if anyone knew something that could help low level players to rise quickly, to blast through the levels with speed, even if it could only deal with a few of them. He had to do something to get his level going quickly, but...what? He stopped and looked to his left, seeing the safe zone border, which would most likely be crawling with monsters above his level. It was too much of a risk for now. When it came to fights, one good tip that animal and human alike should follow was "stick to your weight class", or in this case, level. If he was too strong for it, he wouldn't be able to get much out of it. If it it was too strong for him, he would probably find himself with an HP level of zero before he could say "oops".

"There's gotta be some kind of exploit I could try..."  He thought aloud. "...something to get me up the levels quickly, even if it's just a few..." He hoped.

  11.                       Yeah, Sorun had hardly anything to worry about by the looks of things, as well as the words that were spoken. Oscar noted that he and Night were frontline level players. He put Night on a bit of a pedestal, but Night would deny it, noting that the two high level players had residence here...and how one of them ran a hot dog stand? Sorun squinted as he looked Oscar up and down. "So, you're the Wiener Man, then?" He remarked. What was that popular hot dog brand in the states? "Oscar Meyer"? That's the same name as this dude's name or username, Oscar specifically...and this player was also the Wiener Man who ran the hot dog stand in the alleyway hood within the Town of Beginnings. The more Sorun thought about this, the more the guy seemed like a walking meme, despite his high level. The only way he'd be able to make use of this would probably be to make potential enemies not take him seriously, until it's too late...but it would be awful for first impressions with many others, in Sorun's opinion. He nearly chuckled at the thought.

Kyo sent Sorun a party invite as the others continued to chime into the conversation. Sorun accepted the invite, hopefully any monsters the players would encounter would be nothing like the many that he'd fought against alongside Hana. He really cared about her and wanted to help her out often, but hoo, boy, he was not ready for her adventures' level of crazy. "I've had my share of first battles. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that I'm not exactly a pushover. Monsters around my level will be hard pressed to get any progress against me." He remarked, hoping this would encourage the player who invited him to her party. Then Kyo decided on initiating the quest. Sorun nodded his head. "Have you met the mayor guy yet? I know I did, so the quest's just been sitting there in my quest log since, like, four days ago, I think." He noted.

    Spoiler

    Four days ago...

    "You there! Stop, please!"

A confused Sorun turned around to see a man approaching with long strides. "Need something?" He would ask, though in his mind he was thinking, "Let me guess, someone stole your sweet roll..."
"Pardon me, but I am in need of some assistance, and you appear quite capable." The NPC then heaved a quick sigh, adjusting the monocle over his right eye. "My name is Dorian, and I am the mayor of this town. As part of those mayoral duties, I issued a small loan to a member of the community a few months ago. Well, the time to collect had come around and I-" Flustered, Dorian systematically ran his fingers over his mustache. "You see, I've forgotten who it was I loaned the money to. Terribly embarrassing, I know, but I am a very busy man, and I cannot keep track of everything that happens. I'm sure you understand." With a wave of his hand, Dorian continued, "Should you be willing to track down the loan recipient for me, and collect the col, I would be eternally grateful. Just, maybe don't let anyone else know I forgot who the loan went to?"

Sorun's confused expression didn't fade, and he blinked twice. Well, this wasn't over a sweet roll, but this was still kind of ridiculous. "...Sure?"
It was as if Sorun's word answered the quest prompt for him, as his quest log was then updated.

"Excellent, I knew I could count on you! You might start with Zackariah, the alchemist. He's often doing projects for the town, so it may have been him that borrowed the money."
With that, Dorian immediately returned to business, and disappeared into the town within seconds, leaving Sorun standing there with a blank, awkward expression on his face for a good five minutes.

Entering the shop with Kyo, Sorun was expecting to find him in some kind of serious problem. However, it seemed to go similarly to that time with Hana the other day.
First, Kyo spoke in a way that confused the NPC, similar to how Hana nearly confused Maggie with her choice of words.

    "Right, so we're here about-"
Suddenly the NPC spoke about asking for materials, and making something with them. Wait, no no wait, this is going exactly like-
Sorun's confused expression remained unchanged when it was the Tutorial Quest that got updated, rather than a restart of Earning a Living, but the similarity of the scenario was just uncanny.
"O-ok then, we're off to get 'em."

Well, awkward start aside, maybe the rest will go completely smoothly, unlike yesterday's Escapade with Hana? Only time will tell.

  12.                           Sorun heard the sounds of squealing, and attempted to get up. The smaller boar was gone, but the big fat pig was still there. How. The hell. Does something. That freaking big. Dodge an attack like that. So. Damn. Effortlessly???

While it made no sense that something like this ended up happening, there was really nothing that could be done to change it, but there just has to be some way for Hana to hit it...there has to be a way...
Sorun then noticed that the big chunky boar was going for it again. Sorun stopped the attack with his axe.
"Oh no you don't..." Sorun began. "Not this time..."
He ended up in a lock with the monster, in which both Sorun and the boar were trying to push each other down. Soon, Sorun managed to pull back and then push with enough force to flip the big pig over, in which it stumbled and flipped several times before landing on its back, struggling and squealing to try and get itself sorted out. "That...was for...my D..." Sorun muttered out, before dropping back down to tend to his apparently still active phantom pain.

  13.                The dark haired girl noted that there wasn't any trouble, but the two players were going to start the beginner questline. "I haven't really tried it yet, but I'm sure it'll be worth it, even if it's just some extra experience to level up a few times...I'm sure it'll go smoother than yesterday, anyway." He answered. It's not like there will be a bunch of crazier-than-usual monsters waiting to get aggro'd in a quest like that, unlike what Hana did the other day...
The green haired girl mentioned that she was the one who called out something loud, she was in need of help for the beginner quests. Sorun nodded his head.
"Cool, well in that case, you don't mind if I join in, do you?" He responded.

Another player had recently joined the conversation, addressing the dark haired girl as Night, who in turn addressed the newcomer as Oscar. "You two know each other, then? Alright...by the way you speak and carry yourselves, are you high up on the level ladder? What would you be doing around here if you weren't carrying?" Sorun questioned, forgetting that some people preferred to have their shops in the first floor.

The green haired girl introduced herself as Kyo, and explained her goals. "Front lines, eh? A risky but noble goal. For these low level areas, you usually just need some good equipment and you're good to go for a bit..." He remarked. He then glanced to the other two players for a short moment. "Though the presence of stronger players can also lure in stronger monsters, if I recall correctly." He added, remembering the time when that boar with the black cursor showed up and Yona handled it without a problem. He then looked back to Kyo. "Anyway, good to meet you, Kyo, I go by the username Sorun." He said in introduction, a pleasant half-smile on his face. He didn't know if the other two players were going to stick around, but if anything showed up, he could only hope that any tangles with something too strong could be avoided.

  14.                         It had been a bit since his ingredient quest turned escapade with his cousin, and Sorun had chosen to just take a rest for the day. After yesterday's events, he was gonna need some time, as he clearly needed some time to slowly readjust to his own cousin of all people. At first, being around Hana was being around someone who was both lucky and accident prone simultaneously and yet was somehow ignoring both due to personal reasons...and now? Now being around Hana was like becoming a damn moving target for anything that could aggro, every creature outside the safe zone had it out for her and anyone near her for some damn reason that Sorun had no way of figuring out. Yesterday was an absolute Roller coaster...first there were the boars, then there were the stray wolves, then there were those worms puppy-guarding the fruits...were there more? He was pretty sure there were more...

But when his nap was interrupted by a sudden call, he sleepily raised his hand as he attempted to wake up quickly. "Yo." He attempted to respond.
Realizing he wasn't heard, he sighed, got up and stretched, then yawned, before looking around to try and figure out who made the sound and why. It came out louder than the usual noise for the Town of Beginnings, so it had to have been important enough to investigate. He looked around him, there didn't seem to be very much in terms of different, just the usual for a place like this...which meant that he'd need to try the next best thing...look for someone out of the ordinary.

He ended up spotting a player that stood out in his mind, speaking with another player, who seemed to be wearing casual clothing. Well, maybe one of them knew something. First he'd approach the two. Once he got close enough to attempt joining the conversation, he'd need to get in somehow. "Excuse me, I don't suppose either of you heard someone call something out, did you? I'm wondering what's going on, and how I can help, if there's trouble." He said casually while scratching the back of his head, then tapping the axe at his waist at the end.

Stellar introduction to the conversation, Sorun, just wonderful.

  15.                               What even was this struggle here? Sure, two of the boars had already been taken care of, but there were still two more, that no only was Sorun trying to leave alive for Hana to finish off and loot, but they had both proven themselves to be absolutely insufferable so far.
So, naturally, Sorun was getting tired of this, and it hadn't even been that long. Once again, Hana's final strike was delayed because the big pig yet again knew how to throw her off(or, more accurately, her weapon), leaving Sorun to have to hold off the two boars yet again...and one of the two boars would trigger phantom pain in Sorun by striking a certain area yet again...

This was getting old, this was getting annoying, this had to frickin' stop. "GYAAAAAAGGGHHHH!!!"

Sorun got up, readied his sword art, and dealt a fair chunk of damage to the big one, it only had a sliver of HP left. "Hana, come quickly and finish them off, they're hitting me in the- GAAAAHHHH!!!!" He called out as the other boar was charging into him, sending him flying at the impact.

  16.                                                   Sorun winced as Hana had another stumble, this time caused by the big boy. That fat piggy knew exactly what he was doing. Even if it were lore-wise rather than actual experience, this boar has definitely seen combat before. Whether it be from being attacked by players or NPCs, or by competing with other creatures, it had fought its way to the big size it had grown to.

The two boars turned their eyes back to Sorun, and Sorun gripped his axe. He activated his sword art, hacking away at the big boy and knocking it back a meter or two. However, the moment he turned to deal with the other one, said other boar sent Sorun flying several meters, and that wasn't even the worst of it. There was always one area of the human male, that, even if it were phantom pain, was guaranteed to become a problem if hit... "GYRAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!"

Sorun landed on his back, then curled up as his hands went directly to where he was feeling "pain". What a day this had been so far.

  17.                                Well, at least Hana is safe. Now he just needed to survive on his own end of the battle.

It mattered not that Hana had a slip up and fell. As long as she was safe, it didn't matter. Sorun would normally ask her if she was okay, but the three boars were coming at him and he needed to strike now. He readied his axe and charged up his sword art, hacking away at the two lesser boars, killing one of them. The big boy caught Sorun's axe in its tusks, and tossed him behind. Sorun got up, feeling a bit dizzy. A quest update on his HUD dinged, notifying him that he'd completed his task...but what about Hana? She hasn't been able to gather or kill anything yet...

"Hana, now! While I've got them distracted!" He called out. Hopefully, this would do the trick. If Sorun could keep these two from killing anyone, Hana should be able to complete her task if she could manage to slay them both.

  18.                                   Normally, going back out into the wilds felt like a personal risk. This time, it hit different since his allies weren't strangers or acquaintances. The different feeling hit even harder when he noticed that Hana wasn't beside him all of a sudden. "Hana?"

He looked to his left, but then he heard a squeal to the right. His eyes widened at the sight of his cousin pulling aggro on four boars. "Hana what are you doing?? You can't just attack the first thing you see!" He called out before pulling out his axe and rushing over to help. His Sword Art would hack away at the quartet of boars, finishing off the one Hana managed to damage, and cutting into the HP of two others. The last one stumbled in the confusion. Two sets of eyes were on Sorun now. One typical boar, and one big boy. Both were looking pretty pissed off. Sorun, much to his dismay, still had a lot to learn about defending himself when he only had an axe. Both charged towards him, and while his sidestep was able to avoid the big one, the other boar still rammed right into his torso.

At least it was a weakling.

  19.                                   Why was it always the roof...maybe it was because there were no telephone poles for her to climb up to, but there were probably higher places to climb up to, unless she got bored of those spots or something? There were always things that Sorun couldn't understand about Hana, but in his opinion, that was just part of her charm and a guy would be lucky to have someone like her.

After Hana dragged Sorun over, nearly skipping as she did so, she opened the door to a tavern, and it was clearly a place where the best NPC-made food of the floor was, judging by the smell alone. An NPC would poke her head out the kitchen door, and speak to Hana. Hana gave her response, but phrased it in a way that an NPC was highly unlikely to understand. "W-we'd like to learn how to become cooks, if you're willing to teach us." Sorun added, albeit a bit awkwardly, hoping to clear up any confusion.
After the NPC gave her response, a quest prompt appeared before the two players. Both players pressed <<Accept>>. The NPC would then give the first objective, and the quest was on.

As the two players left the tavern, Sorun was thinking about how to gather these materials. "You know...since we're gathering ingredients, that might require us to go out, hunt and gather, kinda like our prehistorically early ancestors..." He thought aloud. "Well, I need the experience, and I get the feeling that you do, too. Wanna try and hunt something?" He asked.

  20.                      Hana was more excited about getting a profession than Sorun thought she would be. Of course, then she brought up the potential help it could bring others, which made sense, for there was always a demand for consumable buffs among adventurers and frontliners of all stripes. The thought of helping others in this regard wasn't a bad idea at all, but now the two cousins just needed a good teacher to guide them in the game's process of how this profession worked.
Thankfully, Hana was able to come up with the answer quickly. Sorun, of course, hadn't been paying too much attention to the three market districts in the Town of Beginnings, much less the central plaza where it all started, the announcement about the game's dark, cruel truth. He'd just been having the bare minimums and only sleeping half the time in taverns, with winter being the exception because he couldn't get something over him to keep the cold off during those days, and thus definitely needed the taverns those nights.
"So, did someone tell you about her, or did you learn about her some other way?" He asked.

  21.          Sorun could only give a chuckle before considering his next response. "Well, I guess you're more yourself than you've ever been before, then. That's a plus, I suppose." He remarked. Despite her little quirks, Hana's true self was something to behold. More people should get to know someone like her, if not Hana herself. She'd probably be that one friend any sane person would never want to let go of, at least in his eyes.

Hana would ask if Sorun had any plans. She was in luck, for he had something on his mind, not that he knew whether or not she was up for the task. "Actually, I do have something I was hoping to do today. I don't know if you'd be interested, but I'm considering finding my place in the Aincrad Market, probably the cook profession." He explained.  "You don't happen to know any potential teachers of said profession, do you?" He asked, wondering if she'd been more active with the townsfolk, player and NPC alike.

  22.       As Sorun was passing by an inn, something completely unexpected happened. Someone landed in front of him as he was walking, and his expression filled with shock as his jaw dropped slightly. His expression of shock would remain until the familiar face that landed was finished speaking.

"Hana??" He exclaimed. "Why are you even-"
His palm to his face, it all came clearly. Gaming was one of the ways she was able to become her true self, so of course she would take interest in a game the way it was advertised, but seriously, how was she among the ten thousand? Or was this just a case of only ten thousand grab it because the rest didn't want to find themselves buying a game that turned out to be crappy, like plenty of games by big companies prior to being trapped in this place.

"I should've known you'd be here." Sorun began. "You were always the kind of person who wanted to let yourself show, even when you didn't." He threw up his hands for a split second with a quick sigh. "But I guess there's nothing to stop you anymore now, is there?" He asked.

  23.            Sorun needed experience. Not just combat experience, but life experience too...well, as "Experience" could be in terms of this lifelike game's life aspects, he couldn't just do nothing but fight all day and night, the fatigue and hunger pains were making sure of that. He'd need a way around it all, he'd need a place to himself where he could not only rest, but still have a way to get ahead without going out and fighting for his life every day...he needed a place in the market. However, the Aincrad Market was a limited one, despite its Free Market economy. If he wanted a place in it, he'd need a profession that he could easily get into the role of, one that lined up with his natural talents...Cook. He was fairly handy in the kitchen, so maybe he could try for cook.

He continued to walk along the road in the Town of Beginnings. There had to be someone in this bustling settlement who could teach him how it works in-game...

  24.    "That woman sure drives a hard bargain..." Sorun muttered to himself. Yona sent him to become more experienced by partying up with players "more his level", "more his speed", or maybe other things of the like. However, he'd been searching for what felt like two hours for any aspiring nooblets to help out, but nobody at his level that he'd found was willing to step out. With a deep sigh, he continued on, wondering if anyone else might be willing to carry him through something because he couldn't find anyone willing to step out...maybe in the market districts in the Town of Beginnings might have someone there, willing to accept another party member.

In front of a shop, a young pink haired girl was looking towards the door of the building, shaking in place. Some white haired dude then walked up to her, first asking if the girl knew the NPCs weren't real.

    Seriously?

If this game was meant to be lifelike, friendly NPCs might have the necessary reactions programmed in to behave as though they were real people, and it would be especially true for more important or special NPCs. "Not that you're wrong or anything, have you considered being a bit more sensitive?" Sorun asked the white haired player as he walked over.

"If those NPCs could understand what you said about them, they'd be real upset." He noted casually. "I don't blame you if you thought they wouldn't, of course, so many games where they weren't much, a much more lifelike world could take some getting used to."

He then looked over to the pink haired girl. "Are you ok?" He asked her, tilting his head to the side slightly. "You look like you need some space."

  25.   Yona seemed to get a little showy when she finished off her opponent, and Kylissia casually unleashed a simple yet effective sweeping attack, killing one of the two remaining boars. The other somehow managed to deflect the attack and disarm her, however, despite that Kylissia didn't seem worried in the slightest.

But this was, in all technicality, Sorun's first battle, so he wasn't gonna let anything happen like this, not on his watch.

"Kylissia!" He called out as he made his way to the boar, who was preparing to make charge attack against Kylissia, ignorant of Sorun coming behind it. Sorun would unleash a single target sword art, killing the boar before it could charge. He then made eye contact with Kylissia, who still didn't look to worried about what would have happened if Sorun didn't get there in time. "You all right?" Sorun asked.

Kylissia smiled softy, as though endeared by the fact that Sorun had concern for her. "Perfectly fine, hardly a scratch." She answered.
