» Real Name: Name: Yagami, Bhairyuu

           § Given: Bhairyuu

         § Surname: Yagami

         § Name Origins:

Bhairyuu’s father is Egyptian while his mother is Japanese in ethnicity. So they decides to give their only child the name Bhairyuu since they wanted him to be aware that he was the product of two disparate cultures, each with their own rich heritage. So, his name is a portmanteau of “Bhairav”, a god of destruction from Aryan mythology and “Seiryuu”, the Azure Dragon of the East which is one of the Four Holy Beasts from Japanese mythology.

Bhairyuu’s surname is Yagami which is his mother’s maiden surname. His father wanted him to have his mother’s surname out of respect for her as she basically gave up everything she had back in Japan for the sake of starting a family with him (and also because his own last name would not go very well with the name they chose for their son.)

» Physique:

Spoiler

Bhairyuu is 6' 3" in height and weighs in at 180 lb. He is decently athletic in build and his skin exhibits a sun-kissed tone and roughened texture due to all the time he spent outside training in the various martial arts his mother taught him. His upper limbs are of the same length as any other person’s while his legs are a cut above the average in length. His feet are size 9 while the bone density throughout the rest of his body lies on the lighter side of the medium range. However, the density of the bones in his upper and lower limbs is on the heavier side of the medium range due to the extensive training in hand-to-hand martial arts that he has underwent till now.

His two tone hair (jet-black with metallic silver) is of shoulder-length and its texture is quite coarse from being constantly dried by the sun’s heat. He prefers to tie it up in a high spiky ponytail, so his bangs are non-existent. His sideburns extend down till 1 inch above the angle of his jaw.

His eyes are narrow and his irises are jade green in color while his pupils are like those of a cat. He has rather high cheekbones, a sharp nose, and his teeth are straight with his canines being slightly longer than those of the average person while his jaw is strongly set and tapers off to a point. All of these combined with his gaunt cheeks and high forehead give him distinctive appearance.

» Distinguishing Physical Features:

     -  He has a crescent moon shaped birthmark (with both horns of the crescent pointing upwards) on his forehead between his eyebrows

     -  The biggest one is located on the frontal aspect of his torso running from his right hip diagonally up till his left shoulder.

     -  The second biggest is a roughly star shaped scar which is 10 inches in diameter and located on the front of his upper torso, stretching across both pectorals.

     -   The third biggest is located on the right side of his face, stretching from 1 inch above his eyebrow till the top of his cheekbone and this scar stretches across both eyelids.

     -   There are several smaller scars of various shapes scattered over the rest of his body. These are hidden by his outfit.

» Apparel:

Spoiler

His preference in clothing is quite unique. When he is out in public or on a quest/mission, he wears a comfortable navy blue uwagi (traditional Japanese kimono like jacket) which has a high collar, long but loose sleeves, a series of neon green metal fasteners shaped like Djed Pillars running down the right side and which is modified to extend down till 3 inches above his umbilicus. From the waist down, he wears an equally comfortable navy blue hakama (traditional Japanese trousers) which have pockets located in strategically advantageous locations for easy access in any situation. These extend down from his waist till 7 inches above his ankle and are held up by his utility belt (shaped like a royal Egyptian uraeus) in which contains his inventory within holders of various sizes.

On his hands, he has black colored standard finger-less gloves with the dorsum of the gloves being reinforced with small, thin square plates of neon green colored metal plate shaped like a scarab and the knuckle region with strips of the same metal, both bonded to the cloth permanently. The gloves have a roughened patch of leather on the palm side to increase his grip. Underneath the uwagi, he has a jet black muscle tee which goes up enclosing his whole neck and ends by covering the lower half of his face, especially his mouth and nose. He usually keeps this face mask up save for a few exceptional situations.  Under the hakama, he wears equally form-fitting but comfortable black boxer shorts extending till 3 inches above his knee. His forearms are covered by black armbands which extend down his forearms from 3 inches below elbow till 3 inches above wrist.

His legs below the hem of the hakama are covered by form fitting black leg-warmers which start 7 inches below his knees, continuing on from underneath the hem of the hakama and extend downwards to end in a segment which encloses that middle part of his soles in a sort of sling, leaving his heels and toes uncovered. His choice of footwear is a pair of size 9 wide black steel toe tabi boots which have small but thin neon green metal plates shaped like a scarab on the top. The boots extend up to 3 inches above his ankle.

His headgear consists of a medium sized black colored Chinese hat with which he shields his eyes from the sun. This hat has an Egyptian style cloth headdress with alternating black and navy blue stripes as an extension. The hat also has a large bright metallic silver colored royal uraeus shaped metal plate on the front just above the rim. The armbands and leg warmers have metallic silver colored Egyptian ankh shaped metal plates on their front surfaces.

While off duty or chilling at his house, he can be seen wearing muscle-tees with face-mask in either navy blue or black and matching knee length cargo shorts with their pockets in easy to reach locations. He keeps his gloves, armbands, and leg-warmers on as well and his footwear is the same steel toe tabi boots from his public outfit. In times of adverse weather, he wears clothing similar to his standard outfits but which are appropriate to the climatic conditions in question (
warm clothes for winter, light colored, loose clothes for the summers, etc.) When on a quest in a unique environment (like a desert or a snow-covered location), he can be seen wearing variants of his usual outfit which have colors suited for the environment in which the quest takes place (sand colors for a desert like place and snow white for a snowy place)

Part 3: Personality

*Bhairyuu has the same personality in the virtual world of SAO as he does in the real world.*

»Virtues:

Spoiler

- General:

§ Calculating:
Bhairyuu’s second most prominent characteristic is that he thinks of life as a giant strategy game. Due to this, he always uses his above average intellect to constantly improve his efficiency at executing various tasks and also to find ways around any obstacles he might face rather than powering through them via pure determination. His calculating nature causes him to continually look out for his own self-interest as well as that of the people closest to him and use his intellect to secure his side the better end of any deal offered to him.

Due to his keen intellect and calculating nature, he is also drawn to various strategy games of which he likes chess and Shogi the most. He can often be found engrossed in these games with his close friends or other strong opponents when he is not out napping or otherwise indulging his other hobbies. Bhairyuu’s calculating nature affects his social life as well since it causes him to observe any new acquaintance closely in each of their interactions to determine whether or not it would be advantageous for him to befriend them.

§ Calm:
Bhairyuu is not easily rattled by surprises and keeps his cool in all but the most trying of circumstances. This trait allows him to assess a situation objectively and take the best possible route to resolve it. However, one of the situations that can make him lose his cool quicker than usual is if someone were to threaten his near and dear ones. In such a situation, he will go through a 3 stage transition to rage. Stage 1 is when his eyebrows and the right corner of his mouth start twitching intermittently. Stage 2 is when he starts making sarcastic remarks under the influence of his razor sharp wit. Stage 3 is when he becomes physically violent and hitting things hard enough to dent most of them. His right hook is usually capable of scaring most interlopers into beating a swift retreat.

§ Patient:
Bhairyuu is a fan of the slow and steady approach as he was constantly reminded by his dad that doing things slowly and deliberately will ultimately always yield better results than if one were to rush through things in an attempt to get them done as quickly as possible. This above average patience of his come in handy when dealing with particularly intractable individuals, whether they be human or others as he eventually gets them to come over to his side by wearing their resistance down little by little. This trait of his also prevents otherwise silly mistakes on his part, whether in everyday life or in battles and saves him from many a troublesome situation that may otherwise arise if he were to be hasty.

§ Organized:

Bhairyuu is the type whose mind has been trained to automatically categorize whatever information he comes across in his interactions with others. Due to this, even when he is in the SAO realm, he organizes the information he learns through his experiences with other players, monsters, dungeons etc. into relevant categories and stores then in recorder crystals so that he can use that knowledge to aid him in his later encounters or experiences should they happen to be similar in character to his recorded experiences.

§ Adaptive:

Bhairyuu is the kind of person who can adapt to almost any situation as far as humanly possible, allowing him to at least survive most if not all potentially dangerous situations even if he does not succeed in fulfilling his intended objective(s) for those situations.

§ Decisive:

Despite his incorrigible indolence on more trivial matters, when the situation calls for him to make a crucial decision, he makes it swiftly after considering all the pros and cons of the decision and all the ramifications as well. Furthermore, once he makes one such decision, he does not vacillate on his judgment in making said decision.

§ Observant

Throughout his younger years, Bhairyuu's father had drilled into Bhairyuu's head the fact that if one has a keen eye for detail, more often than not, only one truth would prevail in the end. As a result, Bhairyuu has learned, under the watchful eye of his father (who worked as a private detective), to take in all the details of a particular situation no matter how seemingly small and insignificant and as far as humanly possible. This trait is very useful to him since it allows him to quickly deduce any given target's weaknesses and strengths, especially if he has encountered other targets of the same or similar type before his current one.

- Chaotic Neutral Virtues:

§ Will Not Harm Innocents Unless for Profit

As long as a person is an innocent, Bhairyuu will not cause harm to him/her just on a whim. It would take the temptation of a supreme profit to make him even harm innocents. However, should the innocent in question suddenly decide to target Bhairyuu along with his friends and allies, he will target him/her and relentlessly attempt to break his/her spirit and in doing so, destroy them.

§ Strong Willed

Even if he loses a fight that he cannot run away from, Bhairyuu would much rather die than surrender himself to the mercy of his enemy. This is because he believes that if he were to surrender to the enemy or other party, they will simply hold his defeat at their hands over his head and constantly deprive him of his freedom of choice in various circumstances or maybe even find a way to use his personal code of ethics against him in some manner or another.

»Flaws:

Spoiler

 - General:

§ Indolent:

Bhairyuu’s most defining trait is his indolence which borders on sloth. He prefers to take things easy as often as he can, that is, whenever his family and acquaintances are not watching him like a hawk. He will procrastinate all but the most crucial of circumstances, using any excuse necessary to get himself out of doing the trivial things like chores and minor errands. He can often be found taking naps outside on nice sunny days with a cool zephyr blowing through the area or else engaging in the pursuit of his many hobbies when not busy doing anything else.

§ Pessimistic:

As his dad did before him, Bhairyuu also subscribes to the famous Murphy’s Law which states that "things will go wrong in any given situation, if you give them a chance”. So while others tend to look for the silver lining in a given situation especially if they happen to be at a disadvantage in it, he tends to search for all the negatives about that situation or all the possible ways in which that bad situation could become even worse. He then uses this to try to brace himself for whatever could go wrong in that situation.

§ Sarcastic:

Like his dad before him, Bhairyuu is sarcastic to the bone (the facetious kind, not the acerbic and caustic) and he almost never misses an opportunity to indulge in this. He loves to do this merely out of the great sense of amusement he gets when he sees the target of his sarcastic remarks EITHER looking totally clueless which tells him that his remark flew high over their heads, so much so that they could not comprehend it OR respond with extreme exasperation.

- Chaotic Neutral Flaws:

§ Free Spirited:

Bhairyuu is beholden to no one but himself and his personal code. He has always had a major problem with observing strict rules and regulations whether they be tradition, patterns, or protocol. He is more of a free spirit and so if anyone or anything tries to impose any sort of restraint or rule upon him, he will try anything and everything in his power to break free of such restraints since he will let none but himself judge him, his actions and his viewpoints. This is the reason why he absolutely despises those who would nag him about obeying rules and regulations.

This free spirited nature of his influences his behavior in the following manner:

  1.  Unpredictable:

Bhairyuu rarely if ever sticks to any one pattern. He acts almost entirely according to his own whims and fancies and doesn't really give a damn about right and wrong…at least most of the time. The only sure thing about him is that one can never ever know the what, the why, the when, the where, and the how of his actions and decisions. The only time he will even remotely consider sticking to one pattern in anything is if it is absolutely critical to the achievement of his goals and/or fulfillment of his whims and desires.

     2. Anti-Authority

Since he prefers to keep his freedom untainted, and since he has major issues with following authority because they hamper his freedom and the enjoyment of his whims, he will not support any authority figures unless he is offered a considerable number of clearly tangible advantages in exchange and only when supporting such authority figures would allow him to enjoy acting on his whims and desires and also to quickly and efficiently achieve his goals.

    3. Unchivalrous

Bhairyuu does not follow the same code of morality and gentleman-like behavior as do the rest of the members of society. So, he does not hesitate to cross the lines of social norms and morality if doing so will facilitate the achievement of his goals and/or fulfillment of his whims and desires. This trait is particularly apparent when Bhairyuu is on a quest and/or in a battle (with fellow players and monsters alike) and influences his behavior in these situations as follows:

           A. Strategic Retreat:

Bhairyuu strongly believes in running away from and giving up in any situation which he can clearly see as being a lost cause since the act of running away will help him survive to fight another day (in most situations, anyway). Unlike most other people who may stand steadfast and unflinchingly face overwhelming odds against them, he does not hesitate to give up and beat a hasty retreat if he finds his position to be untenable even in the slightest. The only cases he would not do this is if retreating would possibly end up interfering with his freedom

         B. Taunting His Opponents:

Before a major fight, Bhairyuu often taunts his opponent/target to try to aggravate them in the hopes of throwing them off-balance. By doing so, he finds it easier to fight them since as long as their anger clouds their minds, their concentration, their ability of rational thought and such will presumably flag hopefully causing their strategy to fall into ruin.

C. Takes Cheap Shots at the Opponent/Target:

Bhairyuu likes to take pot shots at his target /opponent (restricting their options, trapping them so they cannot retreat, inflicting various status effects on them, etc.).  This is because doing so allows him to quickly and efficiently dispose of his marks. This is also partly due to the influence of his defining trait of laziness: the less resistance his enemies put up against him, the less effort he has to put into neutralizing them.

         D. Selectively Honest:

Bhairyuu does not agree with the common saying that honesty is a virtue. He has no qualms about telling lies if they will be beneficial to him. The only times when he would consider being forthright is when doing so would help him achieve his goals and act on his whims and desires.

         E. Kicks Away Enemy Weapons to Prevent Their Retrieval:

Bhairyuu is very thorough in most situations. This extends to his dealings with his enemies or any targets as well. Once he has successfully managed to knock away an enemy's weapons, Bhairyuu ensures that he distances the enemy from those same weapons. This is to ensure that he reduces the risk of an enemy counterattack to the barest minimum possible so he does not have to expend unnecessary hassle of once again outwitting, outmaneuvering and eventually subduing them.

 § Self-Centered:

Bhairyuu is the kind that only cares about himself. He doesn't care about others in the slightest unless they are actually of use to him in some practically tangible manner. He is most definitely not the altruistic type or even philanthropic in any way. He will only put forth effort into doing things for others if they will give him something of equal value for the time, energy and other resources he has to put forth on their behalf. This self-centered nature of his influences his social life in the following manner:

          1. Introverted:

Bhairyuu is a rather introverted person, and as such, he prefers to keep to himself most of the time and that time is usually spent in activities like spending time with close friends and allies, napping, playing shogi or some other strategy game, training his martial arts skills, and reading mystery novels. However, should he is addressed by another person, he will usually respond in a courteous manner unless the person is disturbing him when he is napping or otherwise engaging in one of his many hobbies, but he never bothers with being officious towards the person. Due to this rather introverted nature of his, Bhairyuu has a smaller than usual social circle which consists of his family, his closest friends and allies.

2. Lone Wolf:

Bhairyuu usually avoids associations with larger groups and organizations unless doing so will play to his whims and desires and maybe his goals if any. Furthermore, unlike other people who pride themselves on being faithful toward their groups and actively take part in supporting it through thick and thin, Bhairyuu is much more mercenary in this regard. Only when there are supremely tangible benefits to him and little to no risk to his health will he actually bother even thinking of actively supporting any group. That being said, if asked to betray his group by a third party, he will flatly refuse to do so unless, once again, there are irrefutably tangible perks to him and little to no risk to his health as well.

§ Hedonistic:

One of Bhairyuu’s main aims in life is the pursuit of pleasure. He almost never misses an opportunity to be self-indulgent in his actions. The activities which he considers to be pleasurable vary rather widely, ranging from things such as sampling the best wines and gourmet food from around the world to playing strategy games against incredibly tough opponents, to reading well-written mystery novels and solving mysteries, to spending time basking in the company of intelligent, strong, and beautiful women in his age group who have hourglass figures. The only time he will even begin to consider not being hedonistic is when doing so would hamper his freedom.

This trait influences his choices and behavior in the following way:

  1.  Excessively Greedy:
Bhairyuu is the very embodiment of the vice of avarice. He desires and does everything he can to acquire all the finest the world has to offer him, the main things being wisdom, power, money, wine, and women. Furthermore, once he acquires anything or anyone of considerable value to him like the ones above, he will try anything and everything in his power to retain them and is very loathe to share them with other people unless he deems it to be absolutely critical either to preserve his freedom or for the achievement of his goals, whims and desires.

    2. Flexibly Romantic

Bhairyuu is the kind of man who likes to have flexible romantic relationships if any at all. He is quite the womanizer and even somewhat of a pervert (as much as any other red-blooded virile young man) and so, he finds that having such flexible relationships allows him to enjoy the company of as many intelligent, beautiful and strong women as he wishes to in his life. The only time when he will consider tying himself to one woman is when he deems it to be absolutely critical to the achievement of his goals or when it will let him act on his whims and desires.

» Likes & Hobbies:

Spoiler

- Hobbies:

Chilling with Friends & Allies:
Chilling with his closest friends and allies is arguably Bhairyuu’s favorite hobby of the many and eclectic ones he often indulges in every day if possible. He does this by reading various manga and anime which are not only his favorites but that of his friends as well. He does this not only because it provides him and his friends and allies rest after a long day’s work or a particularly difficult mission but also because he finds it a good way to strengthen the already powerful bond that links them.

Mysteries:

Reading mystery novels (only Arthur Conan Doyle and Hercules Poirot) and solving all sorts of mysteries while hangin’ with his buddies and allies is Bhairyuu’s next most favorite activity. However, he focuses heavily on archaeological kinds of mysteries since he yearns, just as his father does, to unravel the secrets held by all the ancient civilizations on earth. The main reason why Bhairyuu and his buddies and allies immerse themselves in mysteries is because it gives them considerable mental stimulation, keeping their minds keen and agile.

Strategy Games (Go and Shogi most of all):

Bhairyuu’s third favorite thing to do for pleasure is playing strategy games such as Go, and Shogi against his buddies and allies as well as against any particularly strong opponents. He likes to do this since this is the other source of the intense mental stimulation for him and his buddies and allies considering their exceptionally high skill when it comes to these strategy games. He along with his buddles and allies like to play strategy games also since it helps them focus their thoughts when mulling over all the various possible strategies their opponents/targets may employ against them and by allowing them to focus their thoughts, their ability to figure out the weaknesses in their opponent/target’s battle strategy is amplified, which in turn boosts their chances of securing the victory.

Martial Arts:

Whereas playing strategy games and solving mysteries together act as the fount from which Bhairyuu and his buddies and allies derive mental stimulation, practicing the various martial arts his mother taught him keeps them fit and physically energetic enough to fight all but the toughest opponents successfully and subdue them should their outwitting and outmaneuvering strategy fails them in their hour of need. Furthermore, Bhairyuu and his buddies and allies find that their knowledge of martial arts can also be used to drive off wannabe enemies who challenge them to a physical confrontation or otherwise try the foolish approach of ambushing them in some random dark alley.

- General Likes/Interests:

Knowledge & wisdom:

Bhairyuu prizes logic, knowledge and wisdom since he believes that they afford people many benefits such as rising above senseless prejudice, and on a more practical level, finding ways to solve problems efficiently. Wisdom would allow people to realize when, where and how to apply their funds of knowledge. Furthermore, he also prizes logic, knowledge, and wisdom since it helps him and his buddies and allies figure out exactly how to avoid work or situations that are troublesome and unnecessary as well as to deduce the weaknesses of their opponents/targets correctly and devise a lethal countermeasure that exploits the opponent’s weaknesses to the fullest extent possible.

Strength (Physical and Mental:

Bhairyuu and his buddies and allies subscribe to the ancient philosophy that a sound soul dwells within a sound mind and a sound body. So they like to keep themselves as advanced as they can be in terms of physical and mental strength. This is because these two aspects of strength/power are crucial to them for the successful completion of the various client requests they take on from people hailing from all walks of life. Besides that, Bhairyuu finds that women like men who possess both of these aspects of strength so keeping himself at a high level in these three would have the added benefit in attracting intelligent, strong, and sexy women towards him for him to enjoy to his heart’s content.

Wine (all kinds of famous wines, crimson red is his favorite):

Bhairyuu and his buddies and allies love wine since after a long hard day of taking and solving mission requests and training, there is nothing quite like wine to wash away the stress built up in them. Furthermore, they find that people are more often than not, more relaxed and garrulous when they are drunk, allowing them to get crucial information out of them more easily which those people would otherwise do their best to conceal from him.

Women:
Bhairyuu loves to bask in the company of highly intelligent, strong, and sexy women (his age). Bhairyuu likes such women since they have the capability to fend for themselves should he not be there to defend them and also because they are quite the stimulus for him, making him feel alive (in every sense of the word.)

Wealth:
Bhairyuu likes wealth since despite whatever anyone says, he feels that money makes the world go round and it talks wherever he may go on his travels. He likes wealth also because it affords him the capacity to acquire the rare items that he might come across in any shops he encounters on his journeys.

» Dislikes:

Spoiler

§  Nagging, controlling and overbearing people:
Bhairyuu dislikes people who nag him since he likes to do things at his own pace and wait for life's challenges to come to him instead of rising up and expending too much effort in meeting said challenges.

§  Cowardice (in situations that do not warrant it):
Bhairyuu dislikes cowardice since he feels that in situations where there a person does indeed have a fighting chance, he/she must not back down from the challenge or danger in that situation. However, should one's strategic position become untenable at any given time, Bhairyuu feels that one must be willing to retreat and regroup in order to consider one's next few moves so that one may win against one's opponent.

§  Wanton Cruelty & Destructive Behavior:
Bhairyuu dislikes wanton cruelty and destruction since he feels that doing so would take away potential sources of gain and is an utter waste of energy and time which could otherwise be spent in other more productive activities. He also dislikes it because he feels that if one engages in such behavior, it will eventually come back to haunt him/her.

§  Fame:
Bhairyuu dislikes having an excess degree of fame since he feels that the more of his talents he shows and the more they become known to the world, the greater people's expectations will be for him and that eventually there will come a point in his career when his skills will no longer be able to keep up with people's expectations for him. Furthermore, he feels that if he becomes famous, he will no longer have the peaceful, quiet and drama free life he has always wanted since he was a child.

§  Fear itself:
Bhairyuu believes that fear paralyzes a person in the most critical moments and prevents him/her from moving forward with their goal in that situation. It also prevents a person's growth to ever higher levels outside battle and in battle, it would most definitely result in a person's death.

§  Weakness:
Bhairyuu believes that weakness in a person will often result, in the best of scenarios, in that person ending up dead, and in the worst of scenarios, in him/her being exploited for the duration of their lifespan. Furthermore, he finds that if one is weak, one will be unable to protect oneself or those near and dear to them in the face of danger.

§  Ignorance:
Bhairyuu believes that a lack of adequate knowledge and wisdom result in a person being unable to see through any deception that others may weave in order to trap them and thus lead to their exploitation at the hands of others. Lack of knowledge and wisdom in battle can result in overestimation of one's own abilities and underestimation of those of the opponent, leading to one's inevitable defeat at the hands of his/her opponent. Furthermore, he believes that ignorance is one of the reasons for the existence of prejudice which can lead to persecution by the ignorant of whatever or whomever is not known to the ignorant.

Spoiler

Bhairyuu’s story begins with that of his mother Izanami Ryuugami and his father Abydos Herakthy. His father is a pure Egyptian, hailing from a long and pre-eminent line of Medjay who, since the times of the New Kingdom in the history of Egypt, were charged by the pharaohs therein with the sacred and eternal duty of protecting the final resting places of these pharaohs, whether they were located in the various major pyramids that dotted the vast Egyptian desert landscape or even in the hidden tombs of the Valley of the Kings.

His mother is just as much a thoroughbred as his father, but from the other side of the world, namely from Japan which is known to the world as the Land of the Rising Sun. Her family consists of a long and distinguished line of onmyoji and miko who, from times immemorial, had been charged by the Emperor and the shogunate that came afterward with the holy task of protecting and preserving the various age-old Shinto shrines along with their grounds which lay in various regions all across Japan. Her family also dealt with any problems among the populace which were allegedly of supernatural origin and regularly divined the fortunes of not only the populace but the royalty as well among other things.

Bhairyuu’s parents met when both of them had reached the height of their careers when his dad was working in modern day Egypt as one of the most prominent archaeologists specializing in Ancient Egyptian culture and in the business of preserving the millennia old tombs of the pharaohs of yore, not from the threat of tomb robbers looking to make a quick buck, but rather from the dangers of the ravages of the environment and those of stupid tourists and other things of that sort. In contrast, Bhairyuu’s mother was working as one of the foremost physicians throughout the Japan of modern era.

The event that led to Bhairyuu’s parents encountering each other was nothing short of serendipitous, just pure chance. Neither had been expecting to run across the other but fate had different and far more interesting plans for them. Abydos had just been taking one of his favorite, long refreshing naps under the sunshade of his massive field tent when Izanami and a small group of her closest friends from her days in medical school happened upon his excavation site near one of the most recent newly discovered tombs in the Valley of the Kings.

Since she was not one to condone laziness and had misunderstood his nap as being a result of his laziness rather than him actually taking some well - deserved rest after a long hard day’s work; Izanami had marched right up to him, ignoring the frenzied cries of the camp guards and his workers asking her to freeze in her tracks as well as those of her friends who were begging her to leave the poor man to his own devices and to let him enjoy his rest. While all this commotion was happening, Abydos was peacefully napping after having indulged himself in his favorite activity of cloud gazing and he was blissfully and unfortunately unaware of the raging maelstrom in human form heading towards him at present.

So, he was caught utterly and completely off guard by Izanami when she loomed over him so menacingly and let loose on of her explosive tirades upon him in which she accused him of being indolent and so careless as to let a group of strangers waltz into his camp site and workplace.  As if that was not enough torture, before he could utter so much as a single word of protest in his defense against her unfounded accusations, she forged ahead with her speech about the importance of a good work ethic, about valuing the work one did during the course of everyday life and so on. To top it off, she insisted that since he was such an internationally renowned archaeologist and since he obviously knew the entirety of Egypt like the back of his hand, that he be their new guide on the Egypt tour to replace their original one who had run away upon nearing the Valley of the Kings claiming all the while that the place was cursed by the pharaohs of yore who sought to protect their tombs from trespassers.

Naturally, when he heard such a ridiculous request from a woman who seemed to be so unhinged to him, he protested with all his might, but alas his pleas fell on deaf ears as she simply ignored them. Eventually after about 3 hours of negotiating and trying desperately to make her go away, in the face of her pig-headed, boisterous insistence that he be her group’s guide, Abydos gave in and agreed to her demands, hoping against hope with every fiber of his being that this troublesome, bossy, and unnecessarily loud woman would just deign to leave him to enjoy the peace and quiet he loved so much as soon as the group’s tour reached completion. And so, in accordance with Izanami’s wishes, Abydos, Izanami and the rest of her group headed into the same tomb on which he had just started his excavation a few days ago.

Izanami and her group did not heed Abydos’s warnings about wandering here and there in the slowly decaying structure of the tomb and so misfortune came to them upon swift wings as the millennia old architecture finally gave in to the pressure from the various stresses that it had suffered over the many years that had gone by thus far and it collapsed with thunderous crashes all around them. This effectively divided the tomb into two sections: an inner smaller section which lay in the deepest recesses of the tomb and trapped Abydos and Izanami within it and an outer, larger section which contained the rest of the tour group. Thus, Abydos was trapped alongside his new worst nightmare, namely Izanami, the troublesome woman who just never seemed to leave him alone and with whom the Three Sisters Fate seemed determined to have him form a bond, much to his chagrin. At Izanami’s behest, the rest of her group retreated from the tomb before it could collapse any further and seal off their only exit, but not before solemnly promising Abydos and Izanami that they would come back with the rescue squad which was stationed near the excavation site in order to rescue them both.

Seconds went by, then minutes, followed by hours as slowly but surely both the emergency rations and the time they had left before the rest of the tomb also collapsed upon them started to run out. Though Abydos and Izanami slowly came to the same high probable conclusion that the ancient resting places of the pharaohs that they were trapped in at present might end up being their own ready-made tomb, their reactions to it were markedly different, which was only natural considering their personalities which were polar opposites of each other. Abydos felt supremely honored and humbled at the thought that the very final resting place of the pharaohs themselves was to be his tomb and so he was content to sit there in meditation in an attempt to enter into a state of nirvana, but Izanami, given her spitfire type character was not so eager to sit still and do nothing. So, in an effort to pass the time, she began to once again pester Abydos, this time to convince him to entertain her by playing a standard three game match of chess. Despite his deep seated desire to spend the little time he had remaining in quiet contemplation, Abydos agreed to her demand for a three game chess match since his experiences with her earlier in the day told him that she would not be willing to take no for an answer and that she would keep bugging him till he answered her in the positive. Thus, their match began with the grand prize being the valuable few rations which they had left.

Abydos won two of the three chess games which clinched the match for him. However, since she was determined to one-up him, Izanami proposed and succeeded in convincing Abydos to try a three game match of shogi with the same stakes and requirements as the chess match earlier. However, contrary to her expectations, Abydos actually managed to win the first of the three shogi games, albeit by a narrow margin and only because he was so familiar with chess. The had started the second game when his misfortune struck as the enormous amount of strain the mental effort placed on him on top of the exhaustion he felt due to him having led Izanami’s group on the impromptu tour plus all the excavation work he had to do to uncover the tomb earlier in the day finally pushed him over the metaphorical edge and into the abyss of unconsciousness below. Thus, to her great chagrin, Izanami was left as the winner of the shogi match by default since Abydos had collapsed and was unable to continue said match. Having no other choice in the matter, she put away the game board and pieces and then sat on one of the collapsed pillars lying about with a rather disgruntled expression on her face and a bitter taste in her mouth since the victory she had achieved was a hollow one at best, given that Abydos, her opponent, had gone and collapsed toward the end of the second shogi game when he had almost won it.

As she gazed at the unconscious Abydos lying a few feet away from her when she had left him a few minutes earlier and thought about all of the interactions she had with him over the course of the day till her present situation, she could not help but feel some modicum of attraction to the man, a strange and altogether unexpected feeling for her considering his overwhelming indolence and seemingly utter lack of expression besides the bored one that was always present on his face. Under the influence of this attraction and also out of gratitude for him having humoured her desire to play strategy games despite their decidedly precarious situation, she began the process of reviving him back to consciousness, if for no other reason other than her desire to feel that same inexplicable sense of exhilaration she had felt in all her dealings with him thus far.

So after about ten minutes, she managed to successfully restore his consciousness upon which he thanked her for saving his life. Since their shogi match was inconclusive, even though Izanami was the default winner of the match, they decided to call it a draw and divided the remaining rations equally between themselves. As they consumed their respective rations, for lack of anything better to do, they became engrossed in a discussion about their respective professional backgrounds, families, and other such topics, finally ending with their respective chess and shogi game strategies and how to improve them.

Over the course of this talk, in the same way that Izanami had found herself so enamoured of him, he too found himself inexorably attracted to her for some reason he could not begin to fathom in the slightest, a peculiar thing considering that his previous dealings with her had given him the impression that she was just a loud, pushy, and incorrigibly troublesome woman. Towards the end of their talk, their group which had left several hours earlier to get help finally returned with the squad of rescue workers posted near the site and with their help, cleared away the rubble trapping Abydos and Izanami inside. After that, Abydos showed the group around to some of the more intact tombs scattered around the Valley of the Kings as compensation for their intended tour being interrupted earlier by that unfortunate rockslide. As they parted at the end of her trip, Abydos and Izanami felt an unnerving pang deep inside as they both came to the realization that they were probably never going to see each other ever again.

Fortunately, this time Fate, that oh so fickle goddess, had some good fortune in store for the two. It kept throwing them together on a variety of other occasions, and each time, they ended up in events at the end of which, their mutual attraction only grew in intensity despite their predominant opinion of each other being the same as the one they had during the first of their encounters with each other. Eventually, they realized the fact that they could not escape each other and so Abydos courted Izanami and took her as his wife. Alas, their families felt thoroughly insulted at the sight of their offspring marrying outside their own people since both Izanami’s and that of Abydos were old stock, families that had been in existence since times immemorial in their respective lands and which were venerated by every one of their respective peoples for their wealth, wisdom, strength and other such things. Therefore, they disavowed and disowned Izanami and Abydos, thus cutting them off completely.

However, Abydos and Izanami were undaunted by this rejection and simply moved to the US, hoping that this shift to a completely different country would allow them to start a new life where they would be left in peace and quiet to raise their new family. Over the next 10 years, they worked tirelessly to build their reputation throughout their new home. Unfortunately for them, their families went so far as to use their vast influence with the professional world to block Abydos and Izanami from picking up and continuing in their old careers in the US, so both Abydos and Izanami picked new careers, with Abydos becoming a private detective and Izanami establishing herself as a psychologist.

In due time, Abydos and Izanami founded a new clan known as the Yagami with the help of a few members from their respective families who were still loyal to both of them and were dissatisfied with their families’ decision to disown and disavow Abydos and Izanami. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Abydos and Izanami, their new clan grew to be quite well known among their clientèle. Along with this came their rise to the upper middle class socio-economic status, allowing all the members of the Yagami to have fairly comfortable lives.

                                     Act 2: Bhairyuu's Birth & Early Years

Spoiler

After their new clan and careers were well established, Abydos and Izanami brought forth Bhairyuu Yagami into the world and declared him to be the heir to the Yagami clan, a decision which was heartily cheered by all its members. Bhairyuu was quite the promising prospect right from childhood since he had received many a gift from both sides of the family. Abydos had passed onto Bhairyuu his innately above average situational analytical skills, critical judgement skills, observational skills, reaction time, visual frame refresh rate, as well as an iron will along with a knack for playing strategy games. His mother gave Bhairyuu her above average physical prowess as well as her skill at strategy games and her keen intellect as did her husband Abydos. However, unfortunately for Bhairyuu he had also inherited the personality flaws of both his parents such as the incorrigible laziness of his dad and the tendency of his mother to hit things hard when overcome with rage.  Thankfully though, these flaws were tempered somewhat by the positives among the personality traits he had inherited from Abydos and Izanami, such as his father’s calculating, calm, and strategic way of dealing with problems and his mother’s decisiveness when it came to taking action and her high degree of patience in various situations.

So, equipped as he was with the many gifts he had received from his parents, Bhairyuu grew up steadily from a young boy of 3 years to a young man of 17 years under the watchful eye of both his parents, the clan, and the various teachers at his high school, eventually mastering all the basics he was taught and by virtue of his keen intellect and efficient work method, earned himself a position among the top three students at his high school, the first two being the Valedictorian and Salutatorian, the third and last being himself when it came time for graduation. Then the following year, he joined as a freshman at the one of the top three colleges in the country on the day after his 18th birthday. He slowly worked his way up the academic ladder once again in his chosen dual major in Biopsychology and History and by the age of 21, he graduated from his college, once again being one of the top three students of his batch, the first being the Summa cum Laude while he and one other student were awarded Magna cum Laude.  Along the way, his father had taught him everything there was to know about detective work and his mom taught him several of the more practical martial arts such as tae kwon do, karate, jujitsu, muay thai and Chinese kenpo when they saw him take an immense interest in these areas of expertise as well as many other all of which were key to him one day taking over leadership of the clan.

                                                                Act 3: Tragedy Strikes!

Spoiler

Alas, unbeknownst to him, a most cruel fate had befallen his clan during his absence, and that too, on the very day before his graduation, namely that they all perished at the hands of a gang of assassins working for the many enemies of his parents’ clans. This sordid affair had started when Bhairyuu was a sophomore at college. Abydos, his father, had been asked to investigate a certain powerful gang of assassins connected to which had recently been rumored to be the cause of the string of mysterious deaths of several influential people across the US. This, of course, had angered the gang and provoked them to seek vengeance against Abydos and his family for having the balls to investigate them and even neutralizing some of their members upon the request of some of his more powerful clients.  Sadly, even though this incident happened the day before Bhairyuu’s graduation from his college, he did not hear the bad news till the evening of his graduation day since his teachers and friends had apparently wanted to spare him the mental and emotional scars that the news would surely inflict on him. Bhairyuu only suspected something was wrong when, after the graduation ceremony, he noticed that his family had not shown up to bear witness to his graduation and the reception that followed afterwards along with the families of the other students.

After receiving his graduation certificate, Bhairyuu immediately went to the principal of his college and upon repeatedly entreating him to tell him about the incident involving his family, he finally learned the truth about how his entire clan had been wiped out by the band of assassins who had been on the news so often lately. He then packed his bags and wasted no time in rushing back to the scene, and arrived there late in the night only to find a large crowd of people gathered in the hall. He pushed through this crowd in an effort to reach the center of his clan house. As he emerged from the midst of the crowd at the center of the hall, he saw the reason for the state of everyone assembled there, that reason being the sight of the members of his beloved clan all lying on the floor, cold as ice and with no apparent external injuries to be seen anywhere on their corpses. Now in a state of alarm and fearing for the safety of his parents, he began to frantically search the ruins of the once prestigious Yagami clan house for them, hoping but not expecting them to actually be alive.

After about 3 hours of searching, he found his parents in the deepest part of the clan house where the most sensitive secrets of the Yagami were kept in an impregnable safe the code for which was only known to Bhairyuu and his parents. He rushed to them, assuming from their appearance that they too had met their doom at the hands of the assassins who had attacked the clan, but fortunately for him, they were still alive, albeit just barely so. He listened as, with their last breaths, they whispered the tragic tale of the cruel fate that had befallen them and the Yagami clan at the hands of the assassins and then watched helplessly as his parents shed their mortal coils and departed this life. He was in shock over the whole affair, so much so that his pupils dilated, he started to perspire slightly, his heart went into tachycardia and began to beat wildly as though it was trying to escape the confines of his thorax, his respiratory rate and depth increased, but his mind went blank and the strength in his limbs slipped, causing him to fall forwards and downwards onto his knees next to the corpses of his parents in a stupor.

He remained in this stupor for about five minutes and then without warning, he vomited as the incredible strain from the sensory overload temporarily overwhelmed him. However, this emetic act helped to snap him out of his shell-shocked state, and just as he was coming out of this condition, he was overcome by the full force of the emotional travail associated with the event which made him shed many a tear and he uttered a terrible cry, the sound being a direct reflection of the two predominant emotions he was feeling, the first being an all-consuming anguish at the realization that, having lost his clan and his beloved parents, he was truly and completely alone in the world; and the second emotion being an unbridled rage at the gang of assassins for having the gall to not only attack but also kill his family as well as anger at himself for not being present to defend his clan which of course led to this tragedy.

After uttering that terrible cry, Bhairyuu swore an oath of ruthless vengeance against the assassins and any who might have helped them as well. Coincidentally, just after Bhairyuu finished swearing that oath, the winds picked up speed dramatically as they traveled between the branches of the many trees near the clan house causing the door and windows to rattle, deafening peals of thunder began to issue from the grey thunderclouds that had been blanketing the sky for some time since he came back, and the eerie, ominous howls of the dogs in the neighborhood could be heard clearly, all these portents making it seem as though Mother Nature herself was in agreement with Bhairyuu’s desire and was approving his oath of vengeance against his enemies.

Bhairyuu’s blood-curdling cry, his oath, and the unsettling coincidental occurrence of natural events all combined to cause the people assembled in the hall to tremble, with some doing so since they had actually cooperated with the assassins, and so were afraid to even imagine what Bhairyuu would do to them as part of his vengeance, and others doing so not only because they felt the same heart-wrenching anguish that Bhairyuu did over the deaths of his clan and parents, but also because of an abject sense of shame at seeing that they were incapable of expressing their desire to seek vengeance against their friends’ killers whereas the Yagami heir Bhairyuu, who was merely 21 years old had found the courage within himself to do so despite the obvious dangers which that desire and oath would bring upon him in the coming days.

Thus, as he experienced a tremendous cathartic release in the form of the terrible cry he had uttered earlier and the oath of inevitable vengeance that he had sworn subsequently, Bhairyuu felt his body returning to its normal physiological parameters. However, he felt a strange sensation come over his mind and body as if another personality had taken over his mind after having arisen from the depths of its recesses. Under its influence, he steeled his heart and set his mind to the many tasks at hand. He gathered all the remaining funds of his erstwhile clan and then arranged for the funeral rites of all the clan members in the clan mausoleum, following all the steps as prescribed by the Buddhist tradition. After the funeral service which had lasted the rest of the week, Bhairyuu bade his final farewells to his late clan and parents and then began work on reinstating at least the Shadow Zephyr special ops squad of the Yagami clan with the sole objective of one day tracking down the gang of assassins who had murdered his family so that he could execute his oath of vengeance against them. After setting up the group once more, he began the long hard slog to making it once again known throughout the US.

                                                   Act 4: Six Years Later…

Spoiler

Thus, six whole years passed during which Bhairyuu kept himself busy with his personal investigation into the matter of the mysterious gang of assassins who had so mercilessly slaughtered his family and followed each and every case that involved them closely in the hopes of finding out more about them. At the end of these six years, he found out some important facts regarding the gang’s name, their modus operandi in each of their crimes and the subsequent getaways as well as the possible connections that allowed them to repeatedly slip through the fingers of both national and international law. The results of his research into the gang showed that they had christened themselves with the name “Mugen Apophis (MA for short)” a name that was meant to symbolize the fact that they left nothing but destruction in their wake as the ancient Egyptian demon of destruction, Apophis, who was the very embodiment of the harsh Egyptian desert and also that that the size of their organization which was so vast that virtually no one who had started to investigate or infiltrate them had ever returned to tell the tale, but rather just drowned in the veritable ocean that was their organization.

The other crucial thing that he found out about MA is that they were using a new technology called Full Dive which had been developed by Akihiko Kayaba and that they were escaping into the world of SAO after each of their crimes so that their unconscious bodies could not be touched by the authorities who all wanted to capture them alive so that they could question them. These two facts alone nearly cost him his life and limb on many an occasion and it was only due to his lucky stars that he had so narrowly escaped being killed by the organization. Still, these close brushes with the Reaper did not deter him as he basically had everything to gain and nothing more to lose in the world since MA had essentially decimated his peaceful happy life that he was leading with his parents and the rest of his clan when they had slaughtered all of them and had overlooked him since he was not present at the time of the massacre and was a mere college student.

So, since he was hell-bent on fulfilling his promise to his parents of wreaking terrible vengeance upon MA for their crime against his family and clan, he went ahead and bought the SAO game and the associated technology he would need to play it with the intention of one day cornering every member of MA within the world of SAO and destroying them from root to branch or dying in the process. After buying the game, the console and NerveGear headset along with the associated guide of basic info about the SAO world, he arranged the console and the headset in his private quarters at his freelance detective agency and said his farewells to all his associates just in case he did not make it back to the real world.

Before dismissing them, had also instructed them not to remove the NerveGear (in case it had any mechanism that would interfere with his body and/or mind in the event of its removal) but instead to set him up on life support should there be change in his body’s status while his mind was away in the game. Then he went through all the basic info about SAO, making sure that he understood all the mechanics of the game, the terminology and the set-up of the game world itself. Then he got into a comfortable outfit and after settling himself in his bed, he put on his NerveGear and spoke the now well-known command: “LINK START!” letting the software take him into the SAO world, not knowing what would happen over the course of his adventure in the world of SAO, but at the same time being sure that it would be one hell of a show.
