[SP - F8] Journey to the West «Monkey King»

Recommended Posts

The dull light of the sixth floor jungle was considerably brighter than the ash-filled dungeon Takao had finishing diving through. As he stepped out into the soot covered ground, he brushed off the remnants of ash and cinder from his clothing and face. Takao set his gaze earthward and set off in the direction of Amazon, where he would take the warp gate to the eighth floor. There were still two new quests to be completed, and he had every intention of finishing them all in one go before he returned home. It would be a nice hefty sum of experience under his belt. "Looks like I'll be overshootin' that hour mark by a bit." Takao commented idly as he glanced over the clock in his peripherals, making note of how long he had spent on the floor thus far and how much longer he'd be out in the wilds of Aincrad.

The jungles of floor sixth were densely populated with monsters, and Takao was no stranger to that fact. Between the fifth and seventh floors respectively, he spent just as much time resting within his shop as he did on the particularly unpleasant floors. He was fully expecting opposition on the way back to Amazon and, as he had anticipated, his premonitions had come true. Four monsters, canids with grey fur stained red, stood in his path. He didn't waste time nor did he skip a beat when he launched into a sword art and eliminated the quartet with a wave of electricity.

One group of wolves had fallen within the short span of time since Takao cleared the dungeon and defeated the previous quest boss, and another group was already rapidly approaching. The loud crackling of electricity was perhaps not the most covert way of eliminating groups of monsters, in hindsight, but it was certainly the most effective... and also the most physically draining, but everything had its vice. Takao hefted his blade from the soil and repeated the process that had eliminated the previous four. He held the sword out, tilted its edge inward, and watched as the steel hummed and adopted a brilliant cerulean hue. He was launched into a jump, followed by an unnecessary back flip, and ended the aerial maneuver by slamming the tip of his sword into the ground and subsequently electrocuting the four monsters.

Takao's eyes focused on four more wolves who, like the dozen or so before them, would soon find themselves meeting a shockingly sudden end. He exhaled an unsteady and fatigued breath, preparing to use the remnants of his energy to end the four monsters. He leapt, he flipped, and he slammed his sword back into the ground a fourth time, emitting a fourth wave of electricity to destroy the fourth wave of monsters. "Man, I bet if PETA was around, they would flip their lids." Takao commented dryly as he yanked his sword from the ground.

"It's funny," Takao grumbled to himself, having long since reverted back into that old habit of speaking to himself. "People were trippin' over themselves 'cause they thought that we'd eventually run out of monsters to kill for experience. But you guys are just endless." Takao said aloud as he turned to face the next onslaught of fur-bloodied wolves that sought out his wanton destruction. He leapt into the air, much like he had done when previously using the sword art on the dozens of wolves before, and slammed the tip of his sword into the ground upon landing. A field of electricity shot out like a wave, destroying the wolves in the process.

Takao panted as the last of the wolves fell victim to his wave of electricity and slowly straightened his posture. The fatigue of continuous sword art usage always set in abnormally quickly, as if he'd just finished running a marathon after using the attack only a handful of times. Odd in context, but he'd long since become used to it. Sword Art Online was interesting in the ways that it influenced a person's perception of the world around him. He'd theorized that mental states had started to decay as quickly as a few weeks in, so there were undoubtedly a plethora of players who could very well believe that Aincrad was, in fact, real. Fortunately for Takao, he wasn't one of them.

The village of Amazon sat before him in the distance, hardly a stone's throw from his current position. He exhaled a sigh of relief and swung his sword arm upward, allowing for the flat of his sword to land across his shoulder and be subsequently sheathed in the scabbard upon his back. A sensation of safety washed across him as he passed under the gated entrance and by the guards who vigilantly stood watch, ready to strike down any malicious foe that might cross their path. His destination was clear, the warp gate platform would take him to the eighth floor and his quest for... well, quests would continue.

Takao hopped up the dais to the warp gate and spun on his heel at the top of the platform. "Teleport, Florenthia." He said aloud, bracing himself for the bright light that consumed his body. The ring appeared and he disappeared from the sixth floor, whisked away from the settlement of Amazon to the aforementioned village of Florenthia. The humidity of the jungle was traded for a more dry heat; it wasn't quite unpleasant, but it was certainly far from his preferred weather setting preferences. Takao wasted little time with descending the dais of the warp gate and navigating through the village to the gates, eager to cut down the second quest boss for the day.

"I'm guessin' that's homeboy down there." Takao muttered under his breath as he glanced over the side of Florenthia. The suspended village didn't boast an exceptionally good view of the surroundings, but it was rather difficult to hide the massive silhouette of the massive monkey lurking below. Takao located a staircase that lead to the forest floor without much trouble and quickly descended it, only stopping a good ten meters from the bottom. He had left the safe zone, yet the monster hadn't taken notice of him yet, and was still close enough to engage with the charge skill. "Alright then, let's Taurus Demon it up. Dark Souls, don't fail me now!" Takao said as he tensed his legs and leapt forward, jumping from the suspended staircase and over top of the Monkey King. During his descent, he managed to wriggle into the proper position for the usage of a sword art, and landed each of his eleven hits in an interesting display of aerobatics before landing on the soft grass with a hard thud. The beast shattered into polygons from the might of his blows a mere second later.

As the sea of colourful polygons washed over him, Takao's attention quickly refocused on the forms of four wolves that appeared from the underbrush. They were remarkably similar to the monsters he had fought on the sixth floor, a factor he could only blame on whatever fourth dimensional being dictated the laziness of monster spawning. Much like the Monkey Ape and the dozens of wolves before them, the four beasts each met a swift and electrical death.

The warm air of the eighth floor forest wasn't the most unpleasant climate. Very few floors could boast pleasant environments and weather, and they were a small minority of what had been unlocked thus far. Ironically, he'd found the nicest climate to be in one of his least favourite floors; the thirteenth was generally inhospitable to the presence of players, but it was oddly cool... like a nice autumn evening. Takao shook his head and refocused. There was a quest to be completed, and it wouldn't be done by daydreaming about his weather preferences. The brunet shook the meaningless thoughts from his head and refocused on eliminating the next four monsters to approach just as he had the ones before them.

A low, guttural growl rumbled in Takao's throat as he straightened his back, jade eyes already set upon four new pairs of glowing red orbs that glared in his direction. Another group of monsters, identical in design to the previous four, had appeared from the underbrush and prepared their assault. Never one to let the monsters take the initiative, Takao engaged them immediately by launching into the same sword art that had taken down countless of their canid brethren before them. A field of electricity decimated their health gauges and reduced them back to their natural state as data and polygons.

With the last of the monster's onslaught dealt with, Takao was finally given a few short moments of peace and respite. The forest of the eighth floor would be quiet for a little while, at least in the area he was in, so he figured it would be as good a time as any to occupy himself with a spot of dungeoneering. It was the most efficient use of his time, after all. He was already on the eighth floor, and he had a plethora of general dungeon location data from his dealings with information brokers. It would be a gross misuse of his time to sit around and do nothing, so he set out.

Takao slid his hand downward through the air and called forth the menu, its appearance marked with the gentle chiming of invisible bells. Jade eyes fell earthward to the transparent menu as it appeared, and a gloved hand set about navigating through the options and lists until the map was opened before him. Several markers were placed around the map, which had almost been completely revealed singe-handedly and without purchasing third party map data, simply as a result of his incessant dungeon hunting. It was something of a trophy, to have nearly scouted the entirety of a floor by oneself, although he wasn't the sort to take pride in arbitrary accomplishments.

Takao cast his gaze upward upon locating a suspicious looking tree. ...Well, in truth, the tree was perfectly normal looking. It was massive, as most of the trees on the eighth floor's forest was. It had bark, much like the other trees. It had leaves way above in the canopy, and roots tearing through the digital soil. But what made this tree in particular stand out was what was within, and what Takao had seen with his reveal skill active. Using his sword and a simple swing of his arm, Takao revealed a hidden passageway in the trunk, and huffed out a breath. "Some of these just really weren't meant to be found without this skill, huh..?"

Takao passed through the revealed entrance to the dungeon and into the tree. The bark rippled as if it were a liquid surface standing vertically, and offered no resistance as he slipped inside. Upon doing so, he found that the dungeon was appropriately themed. It was a single room with a staircase that spanned upward, and looked as though somebody had hollowed out the tree itself to create it. Takao immediately set about ascending the staircase and made it to the first platform, where he was met with a spot of resistance. Four heavily armoured apes wielding makeshift weapons of varying description chattered loudly at him, only to be silenced with a single sword art.

Takao continued his advance up the innards of the tree, his leisurely stroll quickly turning into a moderate sprint. The soles of his boots thudded against the floating wooden staircase that lead toward the top, and his jade eyes rested on the next platform that would undoubtedly hold more enemies. Takao took the initiative of engaging the monsters by utilizing his charge skill to leap into the air, and simultaneously activating his sword art before landing. As he landed atop the second platform, he cleaved through the monsters with a trio of precise cuts, annihilating them in three swift movements.

Takao continued sprinting up the floating staircase, not missing a single beat with his steps and maintaining a steady pace. It was a bit awkward to run with the wall on his right side, especially since he was right handed and therefore held his sword in that hand, but he was making due. One last platform stood before him and the final platform, which was considerably larger than the rest. Takao leapt from the last few stairs and landed with a thud, immediately launching into a three hit sword art that targeted the remaining four monsters. With them swept up in the swift trio of motions, only the boss remained.

Takao exhaled a steady breath as he reached the final platform of the tree's innards. He was greeted with, unsurprisingly, an appropriately themed monster. A large monkey stood at the middle of the platform, wearing little armour but wielding a large staff that looked more like a pillar or support beam to a structure than an actual weapon. Never deterred by appearances, Takao hefted himself up onto the platform and wasted no time in launching into an attack. Utilizing the charge skill to augment his damage, the brunet swordsman tore eleven knew wounds into the monkey's body at varying positions and angles, all the while dodging and evading the powerful swings of its staff.

Takao ducked under the monster's large pillar-like staff and tucked into a roll, tumbling from its front to its backside. He effortlessly rolled back onto his feet and spun on his heel, his sword arm swinging behind him to be put into position for the same sword art in which he'd just used. Takao relented control of his avatar to the system and allowed for Cardinal to guide him through the eleven strikes, tearing through the monster and leaving nearly a dozen new glowing red wounds in its body. Takao landed and skidded to a stop as the monster fell and shattered into polygons, marking the defeat of the boss and the clearance of the dungeon.
