[SP - F7] «Case of Wurms»

Recommended Posts

With two quest bosses defeated and two intermediate dungeons completed, Takao was nearly finished with his grinding for the day. Usually it wasn't so eventful, just a plethora of mobs to be defeated alongside the odd number of dungeons to be completed, but he was fortunate on this particular day. There were three new quests that were close enough to known dungeon locations for him to knock out each of them in one go. With the Tiger and Monkey monsters both killed, and their sub-dungeon counterparts similarly so, Takao had only one boss and subsequent dungeon remaining on his roster. Amphis Serpens, and whatever relevantly named and themed dungeon boss awaited him on the seventh floor.

Not long after stepping down from the warp gate platform and delving into the wilderness of floor seven did Takao meet opposition. Several humanoid monsters stood in his path, pig-like in the face and a meter taller than himself with bodies several times thicker. Their massive hands held equally massive clubs and club-like weapons, vaguely reminiscent of tree trunks pulled directly from the ground. They seemed like generally unpleasant monsters to be struck by, so Takao took the initiative by engaging them before they could start the battle on their own accord. He launched into a sword art and augmented his damage with the charge skill, wiping out all four with a field of electricity.

Mountain Troll 4: 0/151 [ 189(DMG) - 38(MIT) = -151 HP ]

As was usually the case whenever Takao left the safety of a settlement or safe zone, the road forward was littered with monsters. Pairs of four to be exact, all of equal level and strength, lined up perfectly and in such a way that he could both easily engage them from a safe distance without drawing their aggro until it was too late as well as damage all four simultaneously. He wasn't a particularly superstitious person, nor did he believe in higher powers, but it was beginning to become difficult to reason that such fortunate events happened purely by chance. Perhaps there was some nameless face somewhere, sitting at a computer desk and fine-tuning every little monster and challenge he came across to be perfectly in his favour.

Takao had barely made it a few steps before another quartet of four troll-esque monsters blocked his path, as was to be expected. Opposition was met at every corner when one left the safe zones and settlements of a floor, so expecting anything else was for those woefully unprepared or oblivious to their surroundings. Takao fit neither description, and liked to think of himself as something of a veteran when it came to hunting down groups of monsters. His weapon certainly wasn't the strongest in that department, but it wasn't without advantages. Despite its inadequacy in the area of effect department, his strongest sword art of the aforementioned sort had little problem with wiping out the four monsters standing in his way.

"Christ... I feel like I say this every single time I go out anymore, but there really is no end to you guys, is there..?" Takao said through heavy breaths. There was one advantage to his weaker area-of-effect sword arts, and that was smaller energy consumption done in intervals allowed him for more overall usage, yet when he did finally run out of energy it was positively debilitating. He could feel the sensation of fatigue setting in, but forced himself into action one last time. He tensed his legs, threw his arm forward, and then launched into a jump. His torso twisted, his body preformed a back flip, and he landed with his sword tip entering the ground first and his boots slamming down behind it a second later. A field of electricity resonated from the steel of his sword and electrocuted the monsters one by one, destroying each in sequence.

Takao exhaled a sharp breath and set about attempting to regain some semblance of a rhythm to his breathing patterns, lowering himself down into a seated position. The mountains of the seventh floor offered a unique climate that Takao could find much more enjoyment within, especially when compared to the humid jungles of the sixth floor and the uncomfortable environments of the eighth. It was a nice little buffer between the floors he didn't care much for, even if the seventh didn't exactly fit the description of the opposite either. Just for now though, it would be fine and he would endure.

Takao forced the tip of his sword into the ground and reclined against the flat surface of a nearby rock, opting to rest up a spot before he proceeded onward with the task at hand. Sixteen monsters, give or take a handful, had fallen in the short amount of time that Takao had been on the seventh floor. It wasn't an unusual occurrence, and he had long since become accustomed to the fact that any time spent beyond the gates of a settlement would he filled with fighting in some way. On rare occasions and seemingly miraculously whenever he had run out of energy, there were brief moments of respite that he could enjoy.

A few short minutes of resting had felt like hours, and stirring himself back up to his feet was a difficult task. He knew better than to sleep outside of a safe zone, where a monster could potentially tear him to shreds or a passing player might be so inclined to do him in whilst he was incapacitated. Tempting indeed, but he wasn't that reckless... at least not in that regard. Takao stretched his arms and sat up, then grasped the handle of his sword and pulled himself to his feet. He hefted the blade from the ground and threw the flat across his shoulders, resting his offhand across the steel as he walked. There was still a bit more to do before he could get some proper rest.

Not long after Takao finished resting and set about continuing his journey throughout the seventh floor, the ground beneath him began to rumble. With an eyebrow quirked upward with interest, he had a pretty good idea of what would be bursting from the soil in the following moments. He huffed and tensed his legs just as the large monster appeared from underground, shattering the earth beneath his feet in its ascent. Takao jumped backward just as it began to turn, and utilized his charge skill to reverse his momentum. As a result, he leapt forward with a sword skill prepared, and tore through the monster with nine well-placed hits.

"...and right back to the usual grinding." Takao said aloud as he straightened his back and settled his gaze upon the freshly spawned trolls, who had appeared from rings of light just seconds after the defeat of Amphis Serpens. So seldom did he find himself with a moment to himself when his energy stores weren't depleted, but he reasoned that it was nice to have their loot drops in ample supply at the very least. So, without hesitation, Takao launched into another sword art and annihilated the four monsters in one fell, electrifying swoop.

Before the polygons of the last monsters could even disappear, another four had spawned just ahead of him. Takao huffed out a breath and shook his head; situations like this were to be expected. He had hunted hundreds, if not thousands of times before, and it was always like this. An onslaught of monsters, followed by a short rest, followed by another onslaught of monsters. It was the meta that Sword Art Online boasted, and Takao was much too accustomed to it by now to complain. Thusly, he leapt as he had so many times before, and obliterated the enemies with the same crackling field of electricity that had fell hundreds upon hundreds of monsters.

Another guttural growl rumbled in Takao's throat as he straightened his back, jade eyes already set upon four new pairs of glowing red orbs that glared in his direction. Another group of monsters, identical in design to the previous four, had appeared from the underbrush and prepared their assault. Never one to let the monsters take the initiative, Takao engaged them immediately by launching into the same sword art that had taken down countless of their orcish brethren before them. A field of electricity decimated their health gauges and reduced them back to their natural state as data and polygons.

Silence fell over the mountainous septenary tier of the Castle Aincrad. His moment had completely halted and his listening skill was activated, carefully scanning his surroundings for any other threats that might present themselves. No monsters were lurking and none had freshly spawned, meaning that he had some time to himself. Takao exhaled a steady breath and swung his sword arm up, aligning the tip of his sword with the mouth of its scabbard with expert precision. The practiced motion allowed him to smoothly store his weapon in the scabbard on his back, and with no monsters to be a threat, he set off in search of the dungeon.

"This is rather... odd..." Takao muttered to himself as he sauntered freely and unopposed through the wilderness of the seventh floor. No trolls or orcish kin had leapt from the underbrush since the last group had been slaughtered, and even though he wasn't expecting another quest boss to erupt from the ground beneath him, he couldn't shake the feeling that such an anomaly would come to pass. Takao shook the thoughts from his head and continued onward, his eyes closing for a moment to activate the Reveal skill. As he reopened his eyes, their green colour had been replaced with a icy grey hue, and adopted a mechanically styled overlay to them, a clear indication of the skill's activated state.

"Aha, lucky me." Takao said aloud as his aptly named skill revealed the entrance to the dungeon he'd been searching for. It wasn't anything particularly special, just a cave entrance that had been thoroughly blocked off from sight by a large collection of vines and foliage. With a single swipe of his sword, Takao cleared the vines and foliage to reveal the entrance, which was practically pitch black. As he took his first steps inside, torches began to light themselves aflame, illuminating the path forward.

The darkness of the cave was slowly fought back in increments as the torches lit themselves one by one. Each step he took illuminated the cave further, and eventually revealed four sets of glowing red eyes and the large pale bodies that housed them. Cave dwelling monsters were rarely ever a pleasant sight, which inspired Takao to engage and subsequently kill them as quickly as possible. He did so swiftly, quickly launching into his strongest area-of-effect sword art and wiping the four monsters from the sub-surface of Aincrad with a field of electricity.

Endless monsters, a danger that every player was aware of yet only a small minority had ever come face to face with. The prospect of hunting wasn't a popular one amidst the masses, most preferred to stay within the safety of the homes and inns scattered throughout Aincrad. Yet there were plenty of players who willingly took the risks that others refused to take, or the risks that others were too afraid to take. Takao was one of them, and despite the inherently heroic nature of the task at hand, he found himself caring less and less about recognition with each passing day. He was beginning to feel like a number-- not a percentage, but a person whose recognizable traits were his level and his ability to fight. It hadn't started to bother him just yet, but he had no doubts it would be something that ground against him eventually. For now though, he set about destroying the monsters in his path, one area-of-effect skill at a time.

The last of the dungeon's underlings stood before Takao, impeding his path toward the boss room door that lay so tantalizingly close yet still out of reach. Jade eyes shifted from one monster to the next, examining their generic appearances and the makeshift weapons that they threatened him with. His own equipment was smaller in comparison yet unfathomably stronger by concept, alluding to a shift of confidence in Takao's favour. He did as he always did when facing a plethora of adequately proportioned monsters and leapt into yet another sword art, decimating their health gauges in a single fell swoop and reducing the green bars to nothing.

Takao didn't bother wasting time by allowing his energy to return through resting, and instead opted to engaging the boss immediately. Reckless, sure, but he had certainly never laid claim to the idea that he wasn't anything but. The leather sole of his boot met the wooden surface of the door, and his strength parameter forced the fragile entrance to give way. As the wood splintered and fell, Takao was already leaping into action, both in the figurative sense as well as the literal sense. He jumped into the air after assuming the necessary stance for the usage of his strongest sword art, and aimed it upon the large troll-like monster that stood in the middle of the room. Eleven hits tore through the beast and reduced its health gauge considerably, whilst its own attacks were easily evaded.

Unwilling to allow the monster a second opportunity to strike, even though its first attempt had failed, Takao wasted no time with segueing into his next attack. His sword arm was thrown behind him and the blade shone a brilliant blue, a clear signal of the successful pre-motion setup and activation of the sword art itself. He allowed the system to take control, and the result was an elaborate string of overly flashy and showy movements, which would undoubtedly waste a plethora of energy that could've been saved with more simple and considerably more effective movements. But the deed was done regardless, and the monster laid slain in the seconds that followed.
