After a while in being in SAO more bosses we’re only going to be discovered in a amount of time… however, recently a group of information brokers hired some explorers to check out a mysterious castle that had appeared on floor 10, on arrival they couldn’t get in no matter how hard they tried… not even Aincrad’s best Scout could get in. And on the door there are 9 crystal slots, which presumably you needed 9 specific gems to get in, then miraculously they had found a dragon protecting an emerald in the plains of floor 1, it was said that the dragon hatched not too long ago and no matter what they tried they couldn’t get the Emerald from the dragon. They ask of you for help, maybe collecting all 9 will meet in grand fortune?

Dragons were a new quarry for Shield, at least here in SAO. Even if it was only a hatchling, he thought it was best to remain well prepared for the encounter. He tripple-checked his equipment: his Regen shield, his thorny set of armor, and his damage enhanced spear. It wasn't much, but it should be enough. He had heard that the creature was disarmingly cute, slowing its opponents down, but Shield didn't need to be evasive to do his job.

"Beside, you're much cuter, aren't you, Norbert?" he asked to the eighty pound alligator snapping turtle on his back.

The familiar grunted and waved its legs in the air as if it would have rather been swimming. Shield took this response as an agreement and continued through the plains of floor one to find the rumored emerald hatchling. As he walked, he came to an odd outcropping of rock jutting from the side of a hill. It was sheltered from view by the hill's curve, but as Shield drew closer, he saw twigs and brambles emerging from the side, under the outcropping. Likely the next itself.

Rounding the corner, he found himself face to face with what was clearly an emerald green baby dragon. For a moment, he almost felt bad targeting it, but a quest is a quest. He dropped to a lower stance and rushed the little creature, brandishing his spear.

The little wymling dodged easily around the tip of his spear, crawling up the haft and onto his arm. As it attempted to sink its teeth into him, it shrieked, its pristine health bar dropping below full as the thorns of his armor did their job.

Attempting to shake the little reptile loose, Shield began shaking his arm, but the hatchling proved more resilient, clinging tightly with its claws and hugging itself to the limb. As Shield paused to reassess his situation, the creature saw its chance for revenge.

Not to be outdone by a fancy suit of armor, the proud little dragon moved off of the armored section of Shield's arm, focusing its efforts onto the meaty portion of Shield's hand. I sank its fangs into the flesh. To Shield's surprise, his health gauge noticeably dropped, but the effect from his shield kicked in, immediately replenishing his health.

"Not bad, little guardian," Shield laughed. "You're going to have to do a lot better than that though!"

Behind where the dragon had been resting, there in the darkness, barely visible, Shield noticed a glitter of green. The rumors about the guarded item seemed to be true.

Using the back of his shield, the armored warrior scraped the fledgling dragon from his arm, casting it back onto its little bed of sticks and dried grasses. Turning his spear over, he pointed the tip towards the ground and dropped his weight, plunging the tip of the weapon into the small, scaly body. The dragon growled, whipping its tail up and lashing Shield's side.

As before, the armor did more damage to the creature than it had done to Shield, and likewise, it did more damage than Shield's own attack, despite it being a direct hit. The amount of lost damage was barely over double what it had been after his first clash with the little monster.

If this keeps up, I may need to swap out weapons. I was hoping the extra damage would be a boon, but I may need to rely on weapons that have effects that bypass mitigation.

Before he could get into his menu to do so, however, the dragonling let out a soft, pathetic little roar, almost more of a squeak than anything that would be deemed threatening. In that moment, Shield was dragged back to the sounds his daughter had made on her first day of school, not wanting to leave her mother and father and go to class. He froze, unable to bring himself to move.

It was with great effort that he forced himself to keep moving, pulling back his spear and attempting another strike, but after hearing the pathetic mewling of the infant dragon, he had no heart to put into it. The scaled monster leaped easily out of the way and dug its claws into Shield's leg, attempting to burrow down through his protective layers.

With a snarl, it disengaged, skittering around angrily on the dried stick bed as it nursed yet another set of little thorn wounds from Shield's armor. He shook his head, preparing himself mentally to overcome his emotions and press on. As he pulled back his spear, however, the dragon let out another pitiful wail, and almost of its own accord, the spear stopped, no longer intent on piercing the little creature.

Now he was back at the dentist, his youngest daughter sitting in the big chair for the first time. He wanted desperately to reach out to her and comfort her, but she was too far away. For that matter, she was nowhere in sight. He was not in a dentist's office. He was in battle.

He shook his head, clearing his mind as best he could from that unintended trip down memory lane. Coming back to his senses, he sized up the dragon, feeling as though he had grossly underestimated its abilities. With the back of his wrist, he pushed his untidy hair back away from his eyes before turning his hand over, pointing the spear that it held towards the dragon.

Shield launched a volley of thrusts, the point of his spear sending sparks as it clashed against the stone beneath the expansive nest. The infant dragon wove around, deftly avoiding each attack, sending the occasional flick of its tail which did nothing but glance off of Shield's armor. There was too much pressure on the glittering green lizard for it to get off a solid attack.

Letting out a little angry hiccup, the emerald dragon spouted a tiny bit of green flame that did little more than set the edge of the nest on fire.

Since a thrust with the point was too easy for the little creature to dodge, Shield swiped at the gem-toned reptile, using surface area to his advantage, and nicking the edge of the creature's fragile wings with the very tip. It whined in an almost startlingly human voice, spinning on the spot and using the momentum to propel its long, whip-like tail into Shield's side.

Again, it had no effect on the warrior while the fledgling dragon dropped nearly into the yellow range from its encounter with the tough, rough armor.

"That's right," he taunted the would-be fierce dragon. "You're not the only thing around here that bites!"

The bratty lizard snorted indignantly, sending another little spurt of flame onto the ground. It flapped its wings in an attempt to take off into the air, but if it had such an ability, it had not mastered it yet. All it managed to do was topple onto the ground and flap its wings spastically.

It righted itself, squawking angrily as it attempted another takeoff. This time, it worked, though only so much as to allow it to flap as high as Shield's face before flumping back onto the arranged twigs in a pile of brilliant green scales.

With its defenses lowered momentarily, Shield thrust with the point of his spear, slicing into a portion of the creature's foot. The beast withdrew its foot and shook it off, turning its eyes up to the armored figure's face and letting out an angry hiss. As its mouth opened to hiss, the back of its throat began to glow a bright, brilliant green.

Putting up his shield, the stalwart adventurer let the issuing flames strike the defensive surface. Little bits of green flame curled around the edges, but it was barely enough to feel any added warmth through the conductive metal shield.

"You'll have to get a little bigger before that attack hurts."

Apparently taking his word to heart, the dragon scrambled up his leg, trying for the arm that it had not yet attacked, the one that held his shield. It bit and scratched at the limb, but not only did it fail to deal any damage, it took a heavy toll on the fledgling. It fell away from him, landing on the ground and writhing as it scratched at its stinging feet and mouth. With that, its health bar dropped below the half way point, turning from its usual bright green into a sickly yellow.

As it writhed, it let out a wail that gripped Shield, dragging him once more out of the present and into the recesses of his memories. he was holding his eldest daughter, only she was not old by any means. She was still tiny and red and wrinkly, her eyes barely opened, and yet her mouth gaping wide to cry out for help. He would have given anything to make sure she never had to cry again.

Then there was a clatter. Someone had dropped something. Looking down, there was a spear on the ground beside him. It was HIS spear. He was no longer in the hospital. He was standing before a baby dragon under the shade of an overhanging stone.

Shield scrambled for his spear, dropping to his knees to retrieve the dropped weapon. The dragon grabbed his arm, climbing up onto his shoulder. At first, this did not worry him. After all, even on its best attack, there's no way that the dragon could harm him. However, it seemed to have noticed that Shield was having trouble with the creature's cry, because it did not just stop at his arm. It clambered up onto his shoulder, letting out another, much closer cry.

It was shrill, and it was loud. His youngest had her finger trapped in the car door, and what was worse, Shield was the one who had closed it on her. As she wailed through tears of pain, Shield was right there with her, cupping her hand gently, looking at the bright red aching fingers.

"No!" Shield shouted out loud, breaking the illusion of his memory. "That was five years ago!"

He reached up and grabbed the wymling, feeling it fight and squirm in his hand. He tossed it down, picking up his spear properly before plunging it down into the monster's belly.

"Stop it!" Shield screamed, pulling back and stabbing down at the wretched creature again. "Stop it! Stop it, stop it, stop it!"

His voice was shrill and brittle, and his attacks were wild and uncoordinated. Despite this, more than one of them had found its mark. Even with his added fury though, the dragon's health bar may as well not be moving at all.

"Why?" he said to himself, panting as he fought to regain his composure. "Why have these last few solo threads done such awful things to be? Turned me into something I'm not? Made me lose track of myself in the heat of battle!"

Shield looked down at the spear in his hand, then at the angry, bristling dragonling. Its scales flashed dully in the dim light, their miniature facets grabbing as much light as they could.

"Calm," he said slowly to himself. "I can't let myself be swayed by such simple tricks."

Shield was in the wrong mental state to fight. Sure, he had pushed aside the blind rage, and he had even pushed through the sadness of the unasked for memories of his daughters, but for such a small opponent, it had him frightened. He seemed to have no control over the invasions into his past, and there was no telling how many more of those were in store.

He actually shrank behind his shield, willing it to act as a barrier between himself and the dragon's cry. Even as he did so, he knew it was futile, but even as he thought it, he could not bring himself to emerge more than the necessary amount to take a swipe at the little emerald hued guardian with his weapon. Each attempt missed, and as the little monster retaliated, he shrank even further behind his barrier, feeling the clash of claws and the scraping of numerous sharpened weapons only through the handle of the shield.

That noise.... each time it's just slightly different. Just different enough that there may not be a way to get used to its effect.

That noise.... each time it's just slightly different. Just different enough that there may not be a way to get used to its effect.

The sound still rang in his ear from when the long, slender serpentine body had slithered up him to shriek it into his ear. As he shuddered, little talons appeared over the top edge of the Silver Lining, and the dragonling perched on thie shield before launching itself, wings outstretched, at the tank's chest.

Shield felt a panicked thrill well up inside of him, and he fell over backwards as the claws of the creature tried to sink into him. They failed, finding only spiny armor, which again did far more to the attacker than the attacker did to it. He sat on the ground, cold sweat breaking out onto his forehead and hands.

Why is this happening? I know those memories were unwelcome right now, but still...

As he looked on, the health of the little foe fell further, sweeping its way past the threshold of yellow and into the bright, cherry red beyond.

He lifted his hand and slammed it into his forehead, trying to clear his thoughts. Fear was still fighting to overtake him, but now anger was fighting against it, vying for control of his emotions.

I cannot afford to let fear rule me! This is how phobias begin. It's one thing to be afraid. It's another thing to run from the fear and to learn to become afraid of the fear itself.

He grabbed hold of the dragon by the scruff of its neck. It dug in with its claws, attempting to stay put, but grabbing hols did it more harm than good, and its talons lifted, allowing the miniature monster to be pulled away. Shield tossed it aside and forced himself back up onto his feet before retrieving his spear from the ground yet again.

"Okay, big guy. You may have some pretty nasty tricks at your disposal, but there's no way I can allow you to hold this much sway over me."

Before the creature had a chance to regain its feet, Shield forced himself to attack, thrusting his spear down and into the writhing chest of the tiny dragon.

Refusing to be outdone by a lowly human, no matter their relative sizes, the little wyrm rolled onto its claws and threw itself at the pernicious attacker who had the gall to attack it unprovoked in its home. It thrashed with its tail, trying desperately to find an invulnerable spot, but each time it hesitated enough that its attacks fell with no impact.

"That's right," Shield said as calmly as he could manage. "You know you're hurt. You can't afford to attack the same places that have damaged you before."

He countered, driving the creature back further into the little nest alcove with his pole arm.  Each combatant busy sizing up his opponent, neither managed to land any blows in the exchange. Shield let out a heavy sigh, pressing his attack. The bright green dragonling skittered up the wall like a lizard, catching Shield off guard as it scampered overhead.

Instinctively, Shield swung high, slashing at the creature and just managing to connect with its forelegs. As soon as he did, amidst the red pixels that issued from the wound, the creature itself fell, landing directly on top of his head. His hands full, he tried to use his closed fist and the side of his wrist to dislodge the nuisance, It clung fast to his hairs, refusing to let go until he actually pulled back his hand to strike at the assailant.

It leaped off of the back of his head, landing behind him on the twiggy nest. Shield grit his teeth and continued to press, driving the creature back with his spear until it ventured into the brighter daylight outside of its safe little cave.

It has precious few hit points left. I've got it on the ropes. I can do this! It shouldn't take long, if I can keep up the pressure and force it to fight back.

At the moment, it seemed too shaken to attack with any serious effort. Its whip-like tail, easily its best weapon, was more concerned with parrying the strikes from Shield's spear, given that the pole arm had done considerably less damage to the tail's owner than the tail had managed to do to itself while attacking.

It attempted to wrap the end of the spear with its tail, but size was a major disadvantage here. Shield lifted the end of his weapon, pulling the little dragon off of the ground. Its claws scrambled trying to regain its footing, but as the ground shrank away, it was forced to choose between the spear and the ground, and it chose the latter.

It released the spear, trying to twist itself midair to land on its feet. With thud and a rustling of grass, it landed on its neck, balking and grunting as it righted itself. In its vulnerable moment, Shield lashed out, crossing its abdomen with his spear and ticking away another inch of its dwindling hit points.

The dragon continued to back away, putting the advantage into Shield's hands. It snarled and snapped, but this did little to deter the tank from pressing forward. It was not until the dragonling opened its mouth and let out a pathetic wail that Shield reacted. His pupils contracted, and he felt himself being dragged into memories of a birthday party where nobody came because it had been planned too last-minute.

"No!" Shield bellowed with the force of his howl, though none of its technique. "No you don't, you little demon!"

He swung the butt of his spear, knocking the dragon across the jaw and cutting its shriek short. Shield could already feel cold sweat breaking out again across his body, but he mastered it, at least for now, continuing to pressure the literal mini boss.

"I've hesitated in this game too much already! You're at a disadvantage. I've already developed too much of a distaste for my own inaction for you to use it against me for long!"

The cry turned into an angry bark, which did not have nearly the effect that the former had. It snapped at the butt of the spear out of spite before jumping up and switching Shield across the face with its wan tail. Although unable to deal any actual lasting damage, it caught Shield by surprise. Before, the creature had been too afraid to attack.

You don't like that I trumped your trump card, do you?

Shield gave a triumphant smirk, missing with the spear, but still remaining on the offensive. He remembered being taught chess at a younger age and being confused about why making smart moves didn't always win you a game.

"I can't let myself play your game, even if I'm playing with smart moves," he said matter of factly to the creature. "Get ready to play my game!"

After all, that's what baited you into attacking again. Let's see what it takes to get another slip-up like that out of you...

Shield took a moment, pausing to let his opponent attempt to flee. As soon as it tried, he attacked directly in front of its face with his spear. It hissed, jumping back towards him instinctively and turning and hissing once again when it realized that it had done so. It tried another direction, and again, Shield cut it off. Every time it fled, its retreat was cut short.

Even with such small features, Shield could see frustration building in the way it held itself, its limbs stiffer and more rigid, and its movements becoming more sporadic and hasty. Finally, with another bark, it turned towards him and attempted to whip him across the face again. Seeing the attack coming from the little hot-headed dragon, Shield inserted his shoulder into the attack's path.

"Gotcha!" he crowed as the creature shrank back, nursing its thorn-reddened tail. "That was a costly mistake, little demon!"

Turning on its clawed heels, the dragon fled in earnest, turning occasionally to send emerald sparks at Shield's face, none of which made it near enough to even serve as a proper distraction. There was next to no health left in his meter, and the fear that this had put into it had given it new spirit in fleeing. Even running all-out, Shield had to work to keep pace. He attempted to cut off its escape again with its spear, but the creature had put distance between them, making his reach an issue.

"You're not going to get away from me," Shield growled, swiping at the thing's hind legs, which gave out, causing it to tumble over itself and back onto its feet.

Shield had not gained much ground, but it had been enough to put the beastling within proper spear-striking distance. Once again, Shield began using his weapon to strike on either side of the dragon, forcing it to turn and lose more of its lead.
