[SP-F11] In desperate need of mats <<Earning a Living>>

Recommended Posts

Once again Itzal was on the eleventh floor to gather materials.  But now he was level fifty.  He had a lot to reflect on.  And a lot to plan out as well.  Velnia flew around the streets playing with the npc children as they walked along.  The kids of course followed Velnia who followed Itzal towards the town gates.  The npcs wouldn't follow him outside of course, but Itzal knew Velnia loved to have fun as well and Itzal had no problem with that.  He could see the gate to the town now and he wanted to head there speedily.  His distaste for the KoB was the only thing that bothered him with this floor.  He needed mats for both crafting purposes, as well as gathering some for a player who requested some.  She had a very tall order but she informed him that he could break the order up a bit.  So he'd be selling fifty tier two materials to her at a time.  He had an official price for materials now too:  one hundred and fifty col for a material, and an extra fifty col per tier.  Tier two materials would be two hundred col in that case.  As they approached the gate he spotted four rather interesting herbs that he hadn't seen before and picked them up, inserting them into his inventory.

While he had established how much materials would cost, he also had made a solid decision on the cost of dungeon maps as well.  The base cost of dungeon maps would be three thousand col, and every floor upward would be another five hundred col.  So floor five would be three thousand.  Floor six would be three thousand five hundred.  Floor seven would be four thousand.  Floor nine being five thousand.  Floor eleven would be six thousand.  Floor twenty would be ten thousand col.  From what he heard the dungeons became easier so that many players might even be able to solo them.  This meant he should probably seek dungeon maps on higher floors besides floor eleven in case players want to take them on.  Itzal would check out the requirements himself and see if he couldn't solo one.  If he had the time of course.  Soon enough they reached the town gate and Velnia started saying goodbye to the npc children.  As he exited the town he scanned the area for available materials but he spotted none.  Sighing he decided he might as well scout out this floor some more while gathering.

As he made his way across the plains towards the forest he made sure to keep an eye out for materials.  However he was guessing that the materials in this area were mostly taken by other players scavenging for tier two materials.  This was after all the lowest tier two floor there was.  The forest however would always have materials.  He noted the mobs and pulled out his map.  He had already scouted the areas closest to the main settlement so he had the easiest route past the monsters.  There was an area where their range of sight wouldn't collide with each other.  Meaning he could walk past them without detection, without even needing to use stealth.  Of course, at some point he did want to test it out, but the time hadn't come yet.  He made his way over to the crossing and noted the antmen minding their own business.  Walking around, chatting to each other when they came near one another.  Itzal noticed a song crystal half buried in the ground and pulled it out, spotting three others as well.

When he obtained the materials he moved on through the specified path.  Itzal had recently reached rank two in sneak and hide.  He needed ten sp to get to rank three, an additional twelve to get to four, and another fifteen to max it out.  The only mod in it was the grandmaster one which was sneak attack:  A mod that gave him an additional point of damage and could still crit.  It wasn't nearly as much as charge but it would suffice.  Whether he would get charge depended on how much room he had for skills he had left.  Of course This skill would mark the end of his journey as a scout.  He still needed to get rank four in picking, but he could grab that after hitting rank three in stealth.  Another ten sp...  Still it gave him something to do, something to shoot for.  He grew closer to the forest and ran up towards one of the trees, scaling it pretty quickly.  As he did he scanned the area for materials.  He found four fresh apples and picked them before leaping to the next tree.

Leaping from branch to branch he thought about the scout skills he'd worked on.  Search and detect was maxed out completely, every mod finally his.  Reveal, detect.  These mods aided him in finding dungeons and players much easier.  Night vision negated the darkness of floors as well as the stealth bonus darkness gave to players.  Tracking, gained recently, allowed him to track down any player, npc or monster whose username he knew, no matter where they were.  This meant he could search for his friends who just vanished but he wasn't the stalker type of person.  Then there was the lock picking skill.  While the rewards for successfully unlocking a chest were weak, and the only real reward nearly impossible to get, it was still something to be gained.  He maxed out his one handed straight sword so he could deal decent damage but had not worked on the mods as of yet.  Finally there was stealth.  And once he maxed it out he believed he'd have as much or near as much stealth as Hikoru.  He paused as he spotted a material down below and leaped from the branch, picking up what seemed to be four ores.

Materials.  Needed by many players.  Mainly in huge bulks such as hundreds.  The use was only of course for crafting, but Itzal hadn't needed to craft for a while.  Though the more he thought about his craft the more he wanted to come up with a way to actually sell his good items.  Nobody seemed to want any songs they could just listen to anymore.  Speaking of which, Itzal pulled out one of his song crystals and activated it, playing a song from the magical creatures album and returned to his thoughts.  He remembered how Anemone was overheated during their dungeon raid and how he wondered if there was something that could cool her down.  Perhaps he could work with his crafts and see if the system would allow his songs to add an extra effect or two.  He spotted four song crystals and picked them up, placing them in his inventory before moving on.

He thought though.  What other abilities could he make his songs do?  If it were possible to cool someone off, or warm someone up, then what else could he possibly do?  Perhaps he could make songs that make falling asleep easier.  It would definitely help with players who were sleep deprived.  What other needs were there out in Aincrad?  The virtual reality system really did a good job at removing needs that weren't related to combat.  Perhaps a song that calms the mind for those who tend to freak out from time to time.  Or a song that helps one focus.  He was sure there were many other possibilities that he hadn't thought of yet, but he would probably discover over time.  Then his eyes caught a familiar shine.  Did he just find more mithril?  When he checked the area he smiled as he had found more and stored it in his inventory, as well as three small jewels.  This would work out well for him indeed.

Itzal wondered what else he might be able to do.  Perhaps he could make songs that caused a rather interesting effect to players who meant to do harm.  Something like fill their ears with noise, or give confusion to them, or something that would prevent them from harming others and allow them to be brought to jail.  Itzal believed that would definitely help.  Maybe he could make songs that drove creatures away and song that pulled nice ones in.  Who knew what other possibilities were available.  Just then Velnia nudged Itzal and gave him a weird look with a smile.  Itzal watched her give a few actions in an attempt to communicate, and after watching her for a while he slowly figured out what she was trying to say.  "A gathering contest?"  Velnia nodded vigorously and Itzal chuckled.  "Alright then, your on."  He picked up a bundle of herbs and shook them in front of his dragon, who then shot off to catch up.

Itzal rushed at a large tree and scaled it swiftly, moving his way up the branches within two seconds flat and began to leap from branch to branch.  He ran through the treetops because he was able to view the trees as well as the ground without having to switch his perspective from up and down over and over again.  It saved time and kept him from getting a neck sprain.  Unfortunately as he scanned the area he was unable to spot any materials whatsoever.  He heard nonstop rustling in the trees however and he knew that Velnia would show up momentarily.  Regardless of what he could do with his songs he couldn't do anything until he gathered more materials.  And fast.  After this he might as well go to the lower floors and gather col and materials.  He heard that the loot table had greatly changed, though exactly how he wasn't sure.  Then Velnia popped up in front of him, swallowing two berries.

As he leaped from branch to branch his mind wandered to the ideas he had made on the video game he wished to make.  Magic would be a major part of it, just as much as other major segments of the game.  However something he wanted to do was make it so that all branches of magic had to be studied, not purchased.  Instead of spending skill points on it, one would have to do actual research in order to unlock items, materials, devices, tools, spells, rituals, etc.  Everything would need to be researched.  This was in relation to the actual rp sense, but not only that.  Magic took intelligence to use properly, so it would only make sense that one would need to study to obtain that intelligence.  He noted that Velnia had gathered another two materials and devoured them right afterwards.  I'm gonna make you eat your own pride when I'm done he thought to himself.

The idea itself was good, but he knew he needed to work on it greatly.  Players could easily cheat and just share the information with each other to get everyone to maximum level pronto and that was something that needed to be worked out.  It also needed to be a fair system that was challenging enough to be fun, but easy enough to not scare everyone away.  The process would also help players actually understand the process.  Sort of a wizards tutorial thing.  He could set it up where the players could either A:  Learn themselves.  B:  Learn from other players, or C:  Learn from certain quests.  How they'd learn and what the process was he had no clue yet, but this was a good start.  Then he spotted a bushel of apples and smiled, snagging them all just when Velnia popped up with another two materials she devoured.  She wouldn't keep the lead for long.

Itzal scanned the entire area for materials but for some reason he once again saw nothing.  Then Velnia popped up with another two materials, gaining the lead yet again.  How was she doing that?  He decided to redirect his thoughts to something else.  He decided to think about his skills again.  He decided to work next on getting his martial arts skill up to rank two.  He needed to get his damage maxed out so that he wasn't totally useless during boss raids and event bosses.  When they eventually unlocked the twenty first floor, they'd have tier three unlocked which meant he'd need to upgrade his sword.  This was normal of course and he wasn't afraid to go to a blacksmith to get one.  He kept running across the branches as he looked.  So far his little competition with Velnia wasn't going very well......  At all.  In fact he was getting beat by his familiar annoyed him a bit.

Velnia once again shoved food down her mouth in front of him and this time he tried to swat her away.  "You're stealing all the materials.  Stop shoving them down your throat and save some for crafting!"  It was really frustrating, not that he was angry at Velnia, but that he couldn't spot any.  He was a freaking scout for crying out loud, why couldn't he spot anything!  He started thinking about his two builds.  His scout build he had completely mastered essentially.  However the new loot system made his skills less needed and useful.  Material gathering was his main use as well as finding bosses, so he needed to be on top of his game if he was going to find materials.  His lock picking rank was only one rank away from being mastered.  He had an item that ranked it up, but right now it was rank three.  So getting one more rank would gain him rank five after equipping a ring.  He sighed before looking for a material again.

After another round of Velnia shoving something else down her throat Itzal's eyes moved fiercely throughout the trees, looking for some sort of material he could use.  The trees had seemed incredibly bare for some reason...  Then he realized something.  What if he looked below, on the forest floor, rather than in the trees?  Maybe that would help.  He leaped from the next branch, bent his knees upon impact with the ground, and rolled to reduce the rest of the fall damage to nothing.  After getting to his feet he charged forward again, watching as Velnia tried to swoop down to join him.  "No!  You're getting plenty of materials up there!  Let me keep the lower half!"  Velnia shrugged and flew again into the forest trees.  Itzal saw some hanging fruit and snatched them, all four materials being inserted into his inventory as he charged forward.  So he was right.  Velnia was snatching materials before he could grab them.  Not this time he thought.  Time to catch up.

Itzal didn't bother boasting to Velnia like she continued to do with him.  He lost track of his materials, and quite frankly he didn't care anymore.  He needed to wrap this up soon.  He scanned the area for any more materials he could possibly use.  Unfortunately he couldn't spot any materials nearby.  He heard rustling through the trees and glanced upward.  He managed to spot Velnia with the use of reveal, charging towards another group of materials.  Itzal rushed at the trees and jumped from one to the other and back, until he reached the materials, drew his sword, and cut them in half.  Velnia yelped from surprise and rolled her eyes.  "That's what it feels like!"  He leaped back down onto the ground and kept running.  Velnia thought about what he said and decided that she had learned her lesson.  She went to look for materials that she wouldn't be tempted to ate them.

Itzal returned to the ground keeping his eyes sharp for materials.  He was light on his feet and whenever an obstacle came up he was careful to leap over or around it.  Soon enough he heard movement in the forest besides Velnia.  He glanced to his sides and thought he saw furred creatures.  Taking to the side of caution he saw a low tree and used it to scale to the higher branches swiftly, activating his reveal skill to see wolves running through the trees.  Itzal glanced at Velnia who shrugged mid air before going back to material searching.  The wolves were looking for him but then he activated his stealth.  Suddenly he was gone.  More then likely they wouldn't spot him again.  He spotted another four materials hanging from a branch and snatched them out of the air, inserting it into his menu and returning to the search and hide game he was now playing with Velnia and the vicious wolves.

He took a moment to see his hud and noted the time.  It was almost time for him to head out.  He'd need to turn around soon but he needed to do so without drawing the attention of the wolves.  He used detect as well as reveal to look a good ways ahead and saw a large rock that forced the path into two different ways.  Itzal could lose them there.  For now he just needed to lay low and gather materials.  Velnia had collected another two materials, but this time they seemed only useful for unbuffed cooking.  Itzal had no qualms with this of course.  While Itzal himself couldn't cook, he'd just burn them all up.  Kasier could.  And seeing as how she was staying with him he figured that perhaps she could make something for them so they wouldn't have to buy anything.  Itzal spotted a small bushel of apples and grabbed them, inserting them in his inventory.  It didn't look like the wolves had spotted him just yet...

As they approached the stone he signaled for Velnia to come over.  She flew from one side to the other too swiftly for the wolves to notice.  When she came over he whispered to her saying that they'd wait on top of the large rock and let the wolves run past.  After that they'd head back.  Velnia nodded and flew beside Itzal.  While they ran and flew together he snagged another bushel of apples while Velnia snagged some grapes.  "I think I won the contest after all," Itzal said.  Velnia grinned and Itzal smiled back.  Why he was so worked up about losing to Velnia he had no clue.  If he would lose to anyone he'd rather it be Kasier or his familiar.  Itzal leaped from the last branch and softly onto the rock, watching as the wolves continued to run onwards.  Four however stopped and began to sniff the rock.  Oh well he thought to himself.  I guess we'll just have to lose them along the way.

Itzal scanned the area for any materials he could possibly use.  He felt the surface of the rock for any song crystals, ores, gemstones, or even mithril, but the more he looked the more clear it became that there was none.  He activated reveal to see if there was anything inside the rock but to no avail.  Finally he looked for a suitable branch to leap to and found one.  He backed up a bit and leaped at it, running back towards the town once again.  Three of the wolves gave up and rejoined the pack but one was following Itzal back.  Or it seemed it was following his scent.  Velnia wanted to fly down and stick her tongue out but Itzal tapped her mid flight in order to keep her focused.  He glided through the trees scanning for materials but unfortunately he wasn't spotting any.  While waiting he counted the materials he had gathered.  Forty seven along with the mithril wasn't bad.  Especially after the rewards from the quest.

Closer and closer he came to the town, slowly getting to the town portal.  And all that way the wolf was following his scent.  Even if it did manage to find Itzal, he'd beat it to the town before it could get a good bite from him.  And even if it did catch up with Itzal his evasive skills were far more superior to it.  If it were the whole pack Itzal would be in trouble.  However it was one wolf.  And by the look of it's health bar it was a leveled mob.  Who knew?  Maybe he'd actually get decent loot this time around.  However he honestly didn't have time for it.  He needed to stay focused on looking for materials as he headed for the town.  He activated reveal again and looked around as he traveled.  Not a material in sight.  He noticed however that not even Velnia was finding anything.  He figured this was the same path he took before and altered his course a little to see if he could get one last set of materials.
