Spoiler

Quest Name: Escape

Quest Description:

After being told about a group of thugs roaming the plains of Floor 3, you decided to investigate. As you investigated, you were rendered unconscious and soon after transported away from the area. When you come to you find that your hands are bound and have been moved to small room in unknown location. Your equipped items and battle items are all missing, a set tattered rags being the only thing on your person. The floor is cobbled, along with the walls the only light being a small, barred slit in the ceiling. After you wrench your hands free a small notification appears initiating the quest <<Escape>>.

Aid Allowed: No

gilead_prison_cell_by_rusty001-d2y36jg.j

After breaking out of your binds, you can see that the <<Wrought Iron Gate>> looks weak enough to bash open. Just outside the gate you see a small wood crate, that holds your previously missing equipment. Breaking open the gate will cause the two <<Bandit Guards>> down the hall to wake and attack you '2' posts later, after you've geared up. It takes a full post to gear up.
~~~
You can attempt to pick the lock of the gate if you have at least Rank 2 <<Sneak and Hide>>. If you pick the lock, the guards will not hear you, and you are free to continue your escape. It takes one post to try to pick the lock, on a LD of 16+.(LD modifiers do add to this) You only have '3' chances to pick the lock, afterwards the lock becomes jammed and you're forced to break down the gate.
~~~
The <<Wrought Iron Gate>> takes ‘4’ full posts to break down. The post count is reduced by '1' for each rank a character has invested in the <<Martial Arts>> skill. However, it can only be reduced to a minimum of '1' post.
~~~
You can complete the rest of the quest stealthily, using the <<Sneak and Hide Skill>>. Every '3' posts, you must roll the LD (please link it to the post) to see if you are discovered. That means after fighting the two <<Bandit Guards>>, every third post you will roll the Loot Die to see if guards discover you or not.
~~~
If you're discovered an <<Alert>> will be sounded and now every '3' posts instead of rolling the LD to see if you're discovered, you now fight 2 <<Bandit Guards>> every '3' posts.(this means your energy will not recharge to full) More guards cannot appear in mid combat. Same rules as the previous paragraph, but instead of avoiding combat it's now you're forced to fight 2 guards.
~~~
On the 15th post or higher you can start searching for the exit by rolling the LD. Finding the exit requires a LD of 17+. If in combat on the 15th post, the roll happens immediately after combat ends. If no exit is found, you can roll to find the exit every 3 posts after.
~~~
After escaping the jail you're met with the <<Bandit Warden>>, who was waiting for you outside.

<<Bandit Guard>> 30HP
(Can edit Hp/Dmg/Mit to meet Loot Drop requirements, or for added difficulty. Will not increase end quest rewards)

Bandit Guards use spears, both one handed and two-handed. And will have normal conversations outside of battle.
Damage: 30, +1 Acc, +2 Eva, +20 Mitigation

<<Bandit Warden>> 100HP
(Can edit Hp/Dmg/Mit to meet Loot Drop requirements or for added difficulty. Will not increase end quest rewards)

A giant of a man, who wields a club. Will laugh and mock the player in battle
Damage: 30, on natural rolls of 9 or 10 ignores armor mitigation, +2 Eva, +15 Mitigation

Quest Prerequisites:

Escape the prison and defeat the <<Bandit Warden>>

The Thread Must Be 2 Pages Long (21 or more posts)

Quest Rewards:

(Repeatable for item drop only)

2 Skill Points upon completion

<<Bandit's Guile>> Increases a player's Evasion by '1' point. Potion effect lasts for one battle.

"Escape?" Shield said incredulously, scratching his head. "Why is this quest called 'Escape?' All it entails is investigating thugs. Maybe I have to help someone else escape, like in the Arabian Nights quest."

Regardless, it was only the third floor, so he felt no apprehension hitting the "Accept" button on the dialog box in front of him. The NPC guard saluted him and strode away towards the heart of the little settlement. As it were, the only quest objective that was currently visible was to investigate, with a map outlining the journey to the last known location of the thugs in question, so with a shrug, Shield set out for the edge of town.

Spoiler

ID# 78537 results: Loot: 3 + 3 item + 1 skill + 1 skill item = 8 - No materials (0 total)

The journey was uneventful, was was typical of the heavily forrested third floor. While there were obviously opportunities to wander off of the woodland path into the trees and seek danger in the form of mobs, the experience would likely be lower than the quest experience he was currently seeking.

As he approached the point on the map that the quest led him to, the forest opened up into a clearing. There was nothing out of the ordinary. There were no visible thugs, and no NPC's to direct him to the next phase of the journey.

"Is this really the right spo-"

Someone slipped a back over his head, casting the world into near darkness, save for the square pinpricks of light that shone through the burlap. Down in the corner of his HUD, Shield spotted the letters 'Para.' He swore inside of his head.

Of course. Normally, this would be the part of the quest where they would knock me out and drag me to their lair. SAO can't 'knock me out' like that though, so they just use a universal paralysis. I bet even if I had immunity, it would override that. I guess I see why the quest has the name it does now.

As he was transported, however, a sort of induced sleep came over him, and he lost consciousness.

When Shield came to, his hands were bound, and he was leaning against a hard stone wall. Glancing around what appeared to be a cell in a dungeon, he could not see any signs of guards. They apparently did not think highly of his chances of escape.

Or it would make the quest too hard.

He shuffled his way over to the nearest section of bars, examining the metal work for any sharp edges.The vertical bars themselves were rounded and actually fairly smooth. The horizontal braces, however, were rectangular, and their craftsmanship seemed questionable at best. It did not take him long to find a section that had corroded and had an edge to it. Positioning his bindings, he pulled them tight between his wrists and began to run them back and forth across the jagged edge. As he did so, a durability bar popped up and began to slowly tick down towards zero. It was not quick work, but it at least wasn't challenging.

As the gauge ran out, the bindings shattered into blue polygons and vanished entirely. Then, for the second time that day, a small dialog box appeared asking if he would like to accept the quest, "Escape." It outlined the process of breaking out, fighting or evading the guards, and eventually the head captor.

"Get, thanks," he groaned before tapping to accept.

He stood, massaging his wrists as he examined the cell properly. The door stood opposite him, made of the same style of metal as the rest of the cell bars.

With his hands now freed, he took a moment to further assess his situation.

No gear... but in quests like this, it's never far away. Maybe that's metagaming too much, but if it's effective, there's no reason not to right now.

He glanced outside. Although there were no guards, there was a nearby crate that seemed to be of some significance.

There. Now I just have to get to it.

With no nearby key hooks and no guards to swindle, that left one option. Break down the door. He stepped over to the locked exit, grabbing hold of the nearby bars for stability before thrusting his heel against the lock. As one might expect, it did not give way, but a durability meter popped up directly in front of the door.

Figures. I know it's only the third floor, but they sure hold your hand a lot on this one.

The sound of his boot against the lock rang down the brickwork halls that made up the dungeon, but at the moment at least, Shield did not hear anyone coming. He looked both ways just to make sure before winding up and delivering another strike with his heel. Again, the sound rang down the halls, but he didn't even hear any voices or footsteps in the vicinity. The durability of the lock was not at half of its original strength.

"Strong lock, this," he sighed quietly to himself, still unable to believe how ridiculous the whole affair was. "I'm sure there are simpler stealth options for those with the right skills, but they should at least make you work for it a little more."

Off in the distance, Shield thought he could make out the faintest sounds of voices coming his way. It might have been a trick of the acoustics bouncing back sounds from his own escape, but just to be sure, he figured he should keep working on the lock.

Shield drew back his heel for a third time, gripping extra tight to the bars of the cell before driving his heel into the lock once again. The durability dropped by another quarter. However, the voices in the distance were definitely coming his way. He didn't know how long he had, but as long as Norbert was nearby, which from the sounds of scraping that had just begun in the crate, he was, then Shield would still have the innate defenses his companion offered him.

"Come on... come on..." he grumbled to himself, trying to plant his less dominant foot as firmly as he could in order to brace for the attack.

On the plus side, I suppose they thought this quest through a little more thoroughly than I had originally estimated. If they get here just as I bust out, then that's going to e a rough first round of combat.

He glanced over at the crate where his things supposedly resided.

I guess that means I'm going to have to get out of here quicker than they anticipated.

With one last burst of strength, Shield kicked out with his heel, shattering the lock into the same shower of minute polygons that the bindings had become. The door jerked open, straining its already damaged hinges and falling from its frame altogether, landing on the ground with a clang that resonated through the masonry of the halls of whatever godforsaken place he was being held.

From further down the corridor, the voices stopped and then became several running feet. Shield cursed under his breath as he raced over to the wooden container that, hopefully, contained his belongings and his turtle. Flinging the lid open, he found a very disgruntled looking Norbert, backed into the corner as far as his carapace would allow, which was not very far, and with his mouth gaping defensively. Shield frowned down at the turtle, knowing what kind of struggle was in store getting him out of the box.

"Nice to see you too."

The process of dodging his companion's jaws with his fingers was no small task. Shield had to come in from behind, lift Norbert, squirming and snapping, out of the box and set him to the side, and don his gear as quickly as possible.

"Come on, come on," he hissed to his menus as he reclaimed the items and one by one reassigned them to their appropriate slots.

The feet stampeding down the hall were close enough to number now. There were two sets of footsteps, one slightly behind the other both in rhythm and in distance. They were near enough now that Shield could make out the beginnings of conversation, which came puffing and panting over the top of the sounds of running feet.

"I thought you were supposed to be on duty," grunted one voice.

"My shift ended an hour ago," complained a younger sounding voice, though just as winded and just as angry.

As the footsteps took on a new level of clarity, Shield knew he only had a few moments left. He had secured his equipment and took a look down at Norbert, who was in the process of scooting his sizable carapace behind the crate to hide.

"...he'll be fine."

Just then, two ragged men stumbled into the dungeon, their armor little more than rags. They looked at Shield, then to the broken door, then back to Shield again. He pointed his axe at them and shrank behind his protective guard.

"Well, even if we got 'im back in 'ere, we can' keep 'im there can we?" said the first, who drew his knife.

The second followed suit, both of them diving at Shield who missed with his axe just in time to see nearly their entire health bar disappear with the damage from his thorns.

"Well," thought the tank aloud, "this won't take long."

The brigands stumbled back, shocked at the results of their attack. Shield advanced, swiping at them with his weapon which they dodged. They swiped at Shield with their daggers, but they failed to press the attack, unhinged by the significant damage they had sustained a moment ago.

"Bloody 'ell was that?" exclaimed the same gruff man who had spoken before.

"No no," Shield said, pointing to his axe. "THIS is Bloody Hell. THIS is Razor Ire."

He pointed then to his armor which had done the damage. The two bandits looked at one another and then back at Shield.

"Bleedin' men'al, this 'un!" said the bandit.

Shield flinched towards them, causing them to flinch away from him. As was typical of weaker enemies after such substantial hits, they were skittish, afraid to get close to the fire that had burned them a moment ago.

Looks like we're going to have to get them worked up a bit to draw them out.

Shield began pacing back and forth in front of them, like a caged tiger, eyeing them with his dark brown irises. The two lowlifes practically shook on the spot.

"So... is this how this fight ends?" Shield asked with a shrug. "You two stand there and piss yourselves, and I just keep swinging until my arm gets too tired, and then I just walk out the door and leave?"

The more brutish and talkative of the two glared, one of his eyes twitching out of anger. Though he hardly seemed as if he was in a hurry to attack, the words were penetrating at least. Shield took a step and struck out at him. Both thieves countered, but only succeeded in dodging out of reach, not even coming within attacking range of their opponent.

Well, this is lots of fun, but there's got to be a better way to do this. There's only so much time before they call for reinforcements.

Shield charged, growling with frustration, but once again, the thieves fled, dodging around his swinging axe and only halfheartedly attempting to hit back. He turned to them, his nostrils flaring as he stared them down.

"You spineless cowards," he seethed, tightening his grip on his weapon, which now slightly shook. "You grab someone without giving them a proper fight, you lock them up, and then when they bust out, you're too cowardly to even face them. Pathetic."

The thieves looked at each other once again.

"W-well... w-w-we w-w-were jus' uh..." floundered the more silent of the two thieves.

"Jus' jus' jus' what!?" Shouted Shield, half-lunging at them again and sending them both springing back towards the wall. "How is this even supposed to be a challenge? This quest is a joke! YOU are a joke! Your stupid prison was a joke! If I ever get out of this forsaken game, I'm going to look up whoever made this quest and slap them!"

More out of spite than out of strategic purpose, Shield forged onward, brandishing his axe to try to forcibly carve some spines out of the quivering piles of cowardice in front of him, but they were too quick for him once again, leaping back and out of the way. As they retreated, they left the exit to the dungeon unattended, and with a glance toward it and a glance in their direction, Shield made to sprint out the door.

Sensing his escape, the rogues bounded into his path, brandishing their knives with purpose. Each sank their blade into Shield's collar bones. At first, he was sure they would take the damage from his armor, but their dexterity had saved them. Both of their health bars, though still just as near to death as before, was still not quite empty. Regardless, one way or another, they were being forced to take the fight seriously.

"Well now," Shield said, his impatience replaced with curiosity, "that's much better. If you're going to die, don't go out like a coward."

Their blades still embedded in his torso, he swung his axe, cleaving the head of the bandit in half. To his surprise, his opponent did not die. However, the lack of immediacy to the death was a small matter, as the wound he had cut remained open. He had to have only been left with one hit point, an Shield knew for a fact that one round of bleed damage did several times whatever paltry health the rogue had had a moment ago.

Both stumbled away from him, their knives still protruding from Shield's shoulders. Each attempted to retrieve their weapons, but Shield slapped their hands away.

"You're just as useless, with or without them," he said coldly. "Don't worry. I intend to make this quick, gentlemen."

Shield took a swipe with his weapon, but both so-called men leaped away, abandoning their weapons. They circled Shield, their hands twitching as they seemed to be visualizing the act of trying to recover their weapons, but before either could act, the one whose life was destined to begin draining did so, and he shattered into a swirling cloud of red pixels.

From the other side of him, where the other rogue stood, came a piercing scream of rage. The living bandit guard was on top of Shield, wrenching both knives from his body and furiously tracing red ribbons through Shield's seemingly invulnerable body. With each slash, he shouted in Shield's face.

"You killed him!" sobbed the thief, his eyes brimming with angry tears. "You murderer! You killer, you!"

However, despite the fervor of the assailant, Shield' remained just as uninjured as he ever was. It was a valiant effort, but it was a fruitless one.

Expecting the bandit to be worn out from his assault, Shield chopped down towards his head, but the nimble player caught his wrist. Glaring into Shield's eyes, he drove the point of his dagger forward, and as it struck, he disintegrated into dancing red fireflies, just as his comrade had. It was stirring. The hatred in his eyes had been palpable. Shield knew that he wasn't human, but for a moment, he wondered how much work had gone into making them seem like they were.

He let out a long breath, wandering behind the crate to see how far Norbert had gotten. Though the turtle had not gone far, it had somehow wedged its way further into the crevice between the crate and the wall.

"Come on," Shield sighed, picking up the turtle by the straps of the leather sling that were still secured around its rough shell. "We're getting out of here."

His turtle safely on his back, Shield pelted down the only exit, but as he came to a fork, he had no idea which direction to take. The path he was on dead-ended at the intersection, meaning one path forked off at a ninety degree angle to his right, and another to his left. He shrugged, navigating through his menus and swapping out his gear for his searching equipment. If nothing else, if the path out was a secret door, it might help him find his way.

He pelted down the hall to find a door. Listening against the wood, he heard nothing to indicate that the other side of the door was occupied, but then again, he had not invested points into the Listen skill.

Here goes nothing.

Forcing the door open, he stepped into what appeared to be a barracks. Two rogues sat around a small crate with an array of playing cards between them, some in their hands, some face up and face down on the table. They looked over at him, confused above all else.

"Oh, I just... um... Hello, boys. Pardon me."

He turned to leave, hoping to get a few steps out of the door before they accosted him, but as their allies, they proved too nimble, dodging past him to block his escape. Cursing silently, his fingers flew across his inventory screen, swapping in his defensive items just as their daggers accosted him. he two weapons were turned aside by his shield, which had only just appeared on his arm at the last moment.

The leaped back, brandishing their weapons menacingly. Shield rolled his eyes.

"Even if you two hit me, you can't hurt me," he groaned. "Just let me through."

He strode forward, but a hand grabbed either shoulder and forced him back, their owners refusing to let him through.

"Fine then," he said, readying his axe. "We'll do this your way. Though I promise you, this won't work out for you any better than it did for your cohorts guarding the prison."

Shield took a step forward, swinging for the right-most bandit's face, but the hall was too narrow, catching the edge of his axe and throwing off his timing so that the rogue was able to flinch back just in time to avoid the blow. As his pitiful follow-through brought his weapon past his foes, they pounced, grabbing Shield by the hair and plunging their daggers into his neck.

They laughed triumphantly, dragging their blades through his flesh to pull them free. Their cackling filled the halls for a few more moments until they registered the look of utter boredom on Shield's face.

"Oh no," he drawled, rolling his eyes. "You really got me that time."

He slapped the hands away from his hair, brushing the strands out of his eyes before returning his glaring brown eyes to the men in front of him.

"Seriously... I doubt you can do better than that attack, and it did nothing. Literally... nothing. You can't win. So stand aside."

"N-never!" stammered the first of the rogues, holding out his dagger point to create distance from Shield as he stumbled back alongside his comrade.

"Fine," Shield answered. "Then you die first."

He stepped and swung, cleaving his axe through the man's collar bone and down through his body. As was typical, the initial strike did next to nothing to the man's health. However, the telltale red wound remained, leaking out red particle effects. In a moment, his health would begin to drain, and as weak as these pipsqueaks were, he knew that it was only a matter of time for the first one.

"Ha!" laughed his unsuspecting target. "Your attacks are just as ineffective as ours."

"No," Shield answered. "You're already going to die. I don't need to waste my time on you. That wound is going to bleed you dry. Your friend, on the other hand still has a chance to escape. I'd take that opportunity if I were you."

"What are you tal-" Suddenly, nearly half of the rogue's health was gone, and then more than half.

His eyes grew as wide as saucers, and he looked at his companion, who in turn was watching his health drain away. With a scream of fear and rage, both men charged, plunging their weapons into Shield's chest. The first, his life nearly gone, erupted into a spray of red that swirled and disappeared, while the remaining rogue's health dipped down to nearly zero.

"As I said before," Sheild began, taking a harmless swipe at the remaining rogue, "You can't win. So now you won't."

"But... you... how?" he stuttered, unable to form cohesive sentences anymore, much less properly fight.

"Don't question it," Shield said with a half sigh. "You don't have the time to waste on questions like 'why.' Just know that it is. I might also recommend running right about now."
