Beat slipped the earring back on as he prepared himself for a confrontation with yet another wave of winkies.

"Well, I think they heard our fighting. I can't believe they actually found us considering this place echoes so much that I can't imagine figuring out where a noise is coming from." He said, eventually figuring that they were likely used to responding to noises throughout the castle.

We was tempted to simply charge ahead, but despite the clouded state of his mind, he managed to resist his lust for battle and kept himself occupied by looking at the cowering Oz characters with a smirk.

"You know we can take anything they can throw out right? You don't have anything to worry about."

Scarecrow looked to him as he spoke, "Maybe, but what if they threaten to do something to Dorothy?"

Beat looked to the ceiling as he considered the proposed scenario. His instincts told him to say he didn't particularly care, since it was the truth. However, he smiled and shook his head.

"Then, we'll kick their butts stupid."

From watching the antics of the winkies, in particular their blind trudging along one hall and onto the next one, Shield arrived at a slightly different conclusion.

"There have been a lot of feet scuffling around," Shield said with uncertainty. "It honestly seems more that if they put enough guards out and have them charge around blindly, eventually they'll find the intruders."

As soon as he had finished his thought, the patrol party whose member had spotted them came charging around the corner, halberds at the ready. With a deep breath, Shield howled out his battle cry.

"Hey, fuzz heads! You ready to suffer the same fate as the last group of you we fought AND your boss?" he crowed, flourishing his axe as he advanced on the now shaken guards.

As he came within swinging distance of the winkies, they did exactly that and immediately regretted it, feeling the sting of his thorns.

Beat's patience had finally paid off as Shield drew the ridiculous soldiers' attention.

"Finally! Let's do this!" He said, charging forward, ready to unleash the tension he had been building as he awaited the confrontation.

He incredible speed, Beat was upon the soldiers in seconds, placing himself in the middle of their formation. They reflexively flinched, but had no time to defend themselves as his sinn leg crashed into each of them of tornado-like force. They flew through the air in different directions and sprawled on the ground as they reeled from the blow.

"Weren't you listening? We beat your boss! What makes you think you'll do any better?" Beat said, folding him arms and scowling, annoyed, but not surprised by the winkies' lack of intelligence.

"Y-you what?! Impossible!" One of the winkies said, refusing to believe such a ridiculous tale.

"Yep, knocked her stupid nose off too." Beat said, grinning as he clearly enjoyed scaring the soldiers, even though he knew it wouldn't actually stop them.

"You could ne-"

"Question: How much do you like your nose?" Beat interrupted, ready to strike again as the soldier got to his feet.

As bodies exploded out from the force of Beat's kick, Shield took a swipe at the one who flew closest to him, missing by inches as the winkie sailed past him. With groans and complaints from all directions, the once proud guards now scraping themselves up to fight another round.

"Not that I can't handle myself running solo, but things just go so much quicker with a real DPS around," Shield sighed, opening his arms wide to draw in the attackers.

They took the bait, charging in and impaling the tank with the spikes on the tops of their halberds, but once again, their health bars were the only ones to suffer any lasting damage. The winkies looked at one another, then back at Shield.

"Maybe they did defeat the witch," said one of the winkies, his voice failing to deliver with any certainty. "They must be powerful wizards! How else do you explain this witchcraft?"

Beat watched in amusement as the winkies took their words to heart. He could certainly see why it would seem like they were using magic. After all, the things they could accomplish with sword arts and various other skills were far beyond what they would be doing without them.

"That's what we've been trying to tell you! Do you really think Oz would send normal people in to defeat the witch?" Beat said, shaking his head as he walked to them, stopping his feet in the middle of the group as he spoke, "We're high wizards. Trained by the great Oz himself. The wicked witch never stood a chance and neither do you."

The winkies stood in disbelief, wide-eyed and blinking for several moments before one of them spoke with a tremble in his voice, "A-a-a HIGH wizard? Well th-th-that doesn't mean that yo-"

"Tell us where Dorothy is!" Beat interrupted, his leg glowing to intimidate them further.

"DUNGEON! She's in the dungeon!....sorry..." One of the winkies said, immediately feeling guilty for his betrayal.

"Thanks!" With that, Beat spun one last time, ripping them to shreds with the twister generated by his kick, a smile on his face.

"To the dungeon!" He said triumphantly, pointing down the hallway, having no actual idea where the dungeon was.

Shield rolled his eyes behind Beat's back, deciding it was a little pointless to try and argue the inhumanity of so cruelly killing virtual winkes for a time when the word 'winkies' was less likely to make Beat giggle. Instead, he merely swapped out his battle gear for his searching gear and motioned for everyone to keep moving, taking off towards the end of the hall where the last patrol had come from.

"With that last group gone, there's probably a gap in the patrol this way," he postulated, taking off at a jog so that Scarecrow could keep up a little more easily.

Despite having found their way to the boss room so easily, the journey to find the dungeon was a little less successful. They jogged for a solid five minutes, dodging guard patrols and slipping down side passages, without spotting any sign of even a staircase down.

"Do you think there's a trick to this castle's layout, or do you think we're just getting really unlucky?" he asked, frowning as they turned onto yet another bare stretch of hallway.

Beat laughed as he scratched the back of his head, realizing that he should he kept one of the winkies alive for more information. He really didn’t want to give Shield any more reason to be annoyed with him given his drunken state, even if the fighting had sobered his awareness up considerably.

“I mean, do we Scooby Doo this thing and split up or do we stick together and just try every door we can?” He said as he tried a nearby door, which opened into what appeared to be servants’ quarters.

The accommodations were what you would expect of a tyrannical overlord. There were a few wooden bunk beds filled shallowly with old straw and a thin sheet. There was also a small desk, which Beat rifled through quickly to find an ink well that appeared to be a material item. He happily stashed the item before returning to the group.

“Either way, let’s get away from those beds before I decide to take a nap, yeah?”

Shield recovered a hunk of stale cheese from the depths of one of the makeshift bed's stuffing before returning to the others, nodding in agreement with Beat's suggestion before addressing his question.

"I'd rather not split up the gang," he replied with a bit of a groan at the very thought. "That plan usually just ends up in a musical chase scene with a lot of people going in and out of doors to comical effect, and knowing what we've seen around here, that might actually happen in this place."

The ragtag group of rescuers exited out of the other side of the barracks and continued along the hall. Shield led the way, his slightly more focused eyes being better suited to the task of keeping an eye out for passages and potential threats. Beat, though still tipsy, would be focused enough to keep up the rear. The Oz characters, meanwhile, did not seem focused enough to keep up anything, all of them currently distracted in trying to convince the little terrier in the Lion's arms not to bark, which only seemed to encourage Toto to be louder.

Toto's barking had finally begun to get on his nerves, but he had an idea that would potentially solve both of their problems. He walked over to the trio and held his arms out to Lion.

"May I?" He said earnestly as he held his arms out.

Lion eyed Beat wearily, not completely oblivious to his inebriated state of mind, but eventually and carefully handed Toto over to the martial artist. Toto stared up at Beat as the player returned the dog’s gaze.

“Think you can find Dorothy? Is that why you won’t stop barking?”

Toto’s barking immediately became more enthusiastic, if that was even possible, and he squirmed out of Beat’s arms and quickly took off down the hallway, though it was in a direction they had yet to explore. He looked at Shield, hoping he was on board with what was obviously just a hunch.

“Better than roaming around completely aimlessly right?”

"If not, then this is a case of the blind leading the drunk leading the blind," Shield said before taking off after the scampering terrier.

Whether due to his animal senses, his role as a quest guide, or more dumb luck, Toto seemed to have a knack for avoiding the patrols that still continued to tromp around, seemingly as blindly as the adventurers were. This was particularly impressive, since he had yet to stop barking at any point since being released, which if it was drawing attention, was passing too quickly for the attention to catch up with them.

Turning a corner, they came up short as Toto pranced in front of a stairwell that led steeply downward. The little dog spun in circles, occasionally hopping a foot or so directly into the air as he waited for the others to catch up. As they caught up, Shield spotted a large carapace of a dead spider that was nearly the size of his hand. Around the same time, he noticed his earring had begun to glow.

"Lovely," he mumbled under his breath, carefully tapping the hairy lump of legs and shriveled exoskeleton to summon the command menu to collect the item.

Beat stumbled a few times as they took off after the tiny canine, who was much faster than one would expect. At their level, they ran much faster than any normal human should be able to, but it was not an easy task to maintain pace, especially around corners. What was more impressive than that, was the trio of cowards scrambling behind them, ungraceful, but maintaining pace all the same.

"Not bad guys!" He said as they round the final corner before finding the staircase.

Beat stared at the spider carapace as grimaced as he imagined more spiders being down there.

"I imagine his brothers and sisters will be happy to see us." He said, hoping it would invoke a reaction from the Ozians, which it did. He chuckled to himself before following Shield down the steep, narrow stairwell. The air was incredibly stale and smelled of mold. He shook his head as they reach the bottom of the stairs.

"I can't imagine captives live long once they're down here, we should hurry."

As the stairs continued to spiral downward, it became more and more clear that they were going much lower than they had gone up when first they began to explore the castle. Shield led the way down into what was clearly the dungeon, the walls becoming further and further covered by dust and cobwebs, with only the occasional patch worn clean from the recent passing of a hand or cloth from a uniform.

As they found the bottom landing, Shield instinctively took a breath in, anticipating an ambush, and he had no problem whatsoever holding his breath until he was proven right. From behind a set of partition walls meant to give jailers privacy from prisoners, four figures in grim, black robes sped out of the darkness, surrounding the little party.

They did not manage to do so before Shield had something to say about it. As they raised their heavy, flanged maces, Shield let the air free from his lungs.

"Cowards!" he bellowed. "Hiding in the shadows, cowering behind hoods to hide your faces! Let's see what you're made of."

He brandished his axe, and the creatures faltered, hesitating in the face of his ferocity, losing their opportunity to strike early.

Beat was taken off guard by the sudden attack, but was relieved that Shield had not been fooled so easily. To make up for his error, Beat spun twice in quick succession. The first rotation made a mighty twister that ripped through the ground and ceiling of the dungeon. His second spin sent the whirlwind through the group of jailors, missing Shield by mere inches, but as designed.

"That'll teach you to try and sneak up on us!" Beat said triumphantly as the jailors reeled from the slicing whirlwind that had left a series of red, pixelated streaks across their bodies. They slowly picked themselves up, staring at Beat, though their target was clearly Shield.

The jailor's reaction to both Beat's and Shield's strength was similar to that of the winkies. He gawked at them both, wondering how someone could possibly be so perceptive and impervious to damage while the other could literally kick tornadoes at them.

As one set of Oz inhabitants marveled, the other was busy panicking. The Tin Man stood stock still, the Lion made boxing motions with his paws and mumbled variations of "put em up" under his breath while curiously failing to advance on the battlefield, and the Scarecrow ran circles around the both of them, his flimsy arms not unlike the inflatable tube people that decorated used car lots.

Shield, with no small amount of effort, kept his eyes on the battle, taking a swipe at the nearest jailer, who quickly leaped back and out of the way. In the wake of the ferocious attack on Beat's part, the hooded figures adopted a similar methodology to the Lion, looming menacingly but seemingly unwilling to come close enough to make any serious attacks.

"How is it that the things that seem to literally live in the dark are such cowards?" Shield asked, incredulous at their seeming inability to attack.

"They're not very bright either. Clearly being hit by a twister once isn't a painful enough lesson."

He sped towards them, causing them to take a step back in fear as he flew towards them, spinning and kicking a twister up in his wake. He flew past them, dragging the representation of his martial arts mastery behind him. The winds tore at them once again, but it seemed that their incompetence, cowardice, or both had actually saved them.

"Seriously? Maybe cowardice was the right choice for them. Though I don't think I would choose to suffer like this..." Beat said, folding his arms and wondering how he would end it without wasting too much energy.

"Of course they just manage to cling to life," Shield sighed.

He could have easily attempted to goad them into attacking, but if they were to prick themselves on his thorns, the player with the worse loot drop bonus would get the kills. Sitting back, he waited for Beat to finish them off. Unfortunately, the jailers seemed to finally be regaining their nerve, standing and turning to the tank.

"Of course they finally develop backbones as they're about to die," he sighed once more.

Bony, clawed hands snaked out of the sleeves of their long robes and slashed ad Shield. With echoing shrieks, they last of their health vanished.

"Of course that killed them."

As the last of the particle animations dissipated into the darkness of the dungeon, the loot dialog box sprang to life in front of Shield.

"Of course the loot is uninteresting," he grumbled, exiting the menu and turning to the others. "Well, I'm officially over this quest. Let's find the girl and get out."

He looked to the Ozians and threw his hands out, "How are you not laughing?! It's the most ironic thing I've seen in a while!"

The three beings simply cowered at the sound of whatever was approaching from the darkness. Beat continued laughing for a few moments before realizing that everyone wasn't simply being party poopers. He hear the skittering noises the moment he stopped laughing and prepared himself for combat.

Shield grunted, still surly from the way the previous battle had ended. Still, he took a full breath of air, waiting for the approaching feet to draw level with them. He had plenty to howl about once their owners arrived. As four more winkie guards trooped down the steps, Shield unleashed the full fury of his lungs.

"When will you fur-headed monstrosities learn your lessons?" his voice boomed, blasting back the patrol and flattening them against the stairs. "It's futile! Give up! Your halberds can't hurt me, and your defenses are nothing!"

The shaken winkies, despite their shock, would not be deterred. They stood one at a time and rushed forward. Shield stepped forward to meet them, not even bothering to raise his arms to defend himself. One blade after another sailed harmlessly through his body, his hit points taking a noticeable dip, but immediately returning full force. He shook his head.

"Shame."

He figured this was likely the final confrontation before they would be finding dorothy, or at least he hoped, so he wanted to have a little more fun before their adventure was over. He looked the winkies over, deciding that he much preferred them over the stealthy guards who had turned out to be more for looks than actual combat prowess.

Seeming to take offense to the sentiment, the winkie in question retorted with a slash across Shield's face. The tank did not even flinch as the blade passed through and eclipsed his field of vision, blinding him with the red, pixelated aftermath only momentarily as the cut immediately closed. He took another step towards the winkie, his expression cold and unchanging.

Wishing to save their companion, the other winkies leaped in the way of his slow march, each trying their hand at damaging the glacial advance, but each saw the same outcome. Without actual pain in Sword Art Online, there was nothing to even faze the stalwart warrior as he advanced.
