[SP-F1]The Second Lesson Is Also Free - Completed

Recommended Posts

After putting it off for a while, Zero decides to finally undertake the second in the quest line for the beginners quest.  Having gotten the "Gentlemen's Cuff Links" and improving his ACC just a tiny bit, he was feeling a lot more confident in his ability to stay alive in this game and was thinking that with a bit of luck, he could move through the rest of these beginner quests relatively smoothly.  He had learned from the quest with Zackariah that Lyle Tealeaf was the next quest giver, he could have immediately started it before but he decided to put that off for just a bit so that he could finish up a few other errands.  Considering that it was a Blacksmith NPC, Zero was pretty sure that the reward for finishing this quest would be a new piece of equipment.  While he was sure that it wouldn't be worth much, considering that pretty much all he had was the starter equipment, anything would be an improvement.  Heading through the Town of Beginnings, he quickly makes his way back to Lyle's Blacksmith shop.

"Ah, good to see you again.  I'm still in need of the help if you are interested."  Lyle goes through his programmed dialogue and the quest information and acceptance windows pop up in front of him.  The Second Lesson Is Also Free was the title of this quest, Zero was seeing a pattern develop and was wondering if it was going to be like that throughout the whole quest line. Shrugging his shoulders, Zero decided that now was as good a time as any to take on the quest and move forward.  Thinking of the extra experience he could earn with this quest and getting a new piece of equipment, he accepts the quest.

"Splendid!  Thank you so much for agreeing to help me.  This request may be a bit more dangerous than the one you did for Zackariah, however I am sure that you won't have any trouble with it.  I need a few materials to finish an item for a client.  The items are called "Boar Pup Tusks" and I need three of them to complete the item.  They are dropped by creatures called Boar Pups.  They aren't too dangerous, but you should definitely exercise caution.  When you have finished collecting the items, please return here and I will take care of the rest."  Lyle Tealeaf quickly goes through the basics and requirements of the quest.  It seemed like it was a simple grinding quest, kill a few mobs until they drop enough of the quest item and then bring it back for the reward.  He knew from experience that combat in this game could be a little dangerous, still he was certain that he would be ok, having a bit of extra accuracy should make a world of difference. Bowing his head to Lyle, Zero turns on his heels and heads out of the shop and makes his way down the street and out of the town of beginnings.

Zero took his time heading out into the forest, there was a lot of time that he could take on this quest and he needed to make sure that his mind was calm and focused.  The one thing that he had learned taking on the boar in the first quest was that the game was meant to rattle you into making bad decisions which could possibly get you  killed.  If he took his time and made sure that he kept his head about him, combat shouldn't be too difficult. Taking a deep breath, he left the safe zone around the town and headed into the wilderness outside.

The area around him was beautiful.  Since the game was intercepting the signals in his brain in the real world, the level of realism that could be reproduced was astounding, it was like he could actually feel the sun coming down on him and warming him up, while the gentle breeze that was blowing was cooling on his skin, keeping the heat from being too much. As he was looking around at his surroundings, Zero noticed something about of the corner of his eye.  He turns and goes towards it to check it out and finds a spawn point for materials.  He couldn't help but smile to himself as he gathers up the material and puts it in his inventory.  Finding something that could be used elsewhere in the game while he was on a quest was definitely a good omen for the rest of this quest.

After finding the first piece of materials for use outside of a quest and feeling quite full of himself, Zero continues on his quest to find and Boar Pups and gather three Boar Pup Tusks.  He knew that the combat portion of the game could be difficult but he was really hoping that he could only need to defeat three of them.  Usually for quests like this, the drop rate for the quest items was raised to a pretty significant amount any way, so hopefully he wouldn't need to engage in too much combat and wouldn't have to put himself into too much danger.  As he walks along the path outside of town, Zero sees an enemy name pop up and he was happy with what he was seeing.  He had already found a Boar Pup.  With any luck, he could take it out before it even got a chance to attack.

Releasing the large blade from his back, Zero grasps the blade with both hands and holds it over his left shoulder.  He waits for a moment for the boar pup to turn its back to him before he rushes towards the mob.  Focusing on his breathing and keeping his eyes set firmly on the enemy, he hefts the blade off his shoulder and brings it down hard with a basic attack.  However, just as he was attacking, the boar pup turns slightly and the attack misses wildly.  Now the boar pup was aware of Zero's presence and turned to attack its attacker.

The pup roots around in the ground, looking for something to eat, digging into the soft dirt with its hooves trying to find anything that it could.  Not that it was really anything that it needed, but it was merely following its very basic programming to act like a boar pup.  Everything in this game had its A.I. generated and controlled by the Cardinal system and it was just following its most basic orders and commands.  Sniffing the ground, he turns and begins digging into the ground more.  Just as it turns, a large blade passes by quickly and just barely avoids striking the little boar pup.   The combat portion of its A.I. quickly flared up and engaged.  Wheeling around quickly, the boar pup stamps out with its hooves, trying to knock the player back and do some damage, but the player was moving too much after his attack and the pup's attack completely missed as well. The little mob just backwards, snorting and digging its front left hooves into the ground, preparing to charge and attack once more.

Having had this happen to him before, Zero realized once he missed that he could use the momentum of his attack to help spin him away from the mob and hopefully allow him to avoid some damage.  The boar pup did indeed miss, the small boar lashed out with its hoove and tried to stomp him but attack went harmlessly through the air before impacting hard in the soft dirt around them.  Even though he had missed the first attack, his confidence was growing, feeling emboldened by the fact that he had taken out a much stronger boar before at level 1 and with his gentlemen's cuff links he should be far more ready for combat now.

His overconfidence was suddenly very telling as attempted to bring his blade back up and strike the Boar Pup with an attack.  Even with his accuracy up item, he had wildly misjudged the distance between himself and the creature and didn't come anywhere near hitting the creature.  He needed to settle down and stop taking that he was just going to hit his target now for granted, he realized that he was placing too much faith in that item and not enough in himself and his own abilities.

While the boar pup wasn't really programmed with much of a "Self Preservation" instinct in its A.I., what little was there was taken a back by the sharp blade flying inches away from its face and eyes.  Due to this, instead of charing right away, the boar pup actually took a step back, flinching and moving away from the blade even though it wasn't going to hit anyway.  When the boar pup recovered and stopped its backwards momentum, it dug its feet into the ground before rushing forward, lowering its head in a frenzied charge.  The quickly raises its head up and tries to smash the player that was attacking him, but by stepping away like it did, it gave the player just enough space and time and side step out of the away and avoid taking any damage from that attack either.  The small pup jumps into the air and spins around to face its target once more.  This battle was slowly becoming a stale mate and could drag on forever if something didn't change quickly.  The boar pup's programming however didn't allow for it to think like that, as the mob snorted and stomped its hooves into the ground, preparing to charage and attack once more.

Zero took a deep breath and calmed himself.  He had been through this before and he just needed to relax, focus and allow himself to feel the Sword Art activate and just follow through.  He pulls the hilt of his blade in close to his side, closes his eyes and exhales slowly.  He waits until he hears the foot falls of the boar pup as it charges.  The sound of the thundering hooves is the signal he was waiting for as he opens his eyes and activates the "Straight" sword art ability.  His blade glows as he steps to the side and brings his blade around with all the strength that he can muster.  The attack hits the boar up solidly, delivering a long cut down the entire left side of its body.  Stunned and shocked for but a moment, the boar explodes into a shimmer of particle effects before the battle information screen pops up in front of Zero.

"No item drop from this one.  Well, I hope that this isn't a sign of things to come.  While it doesn't appear to be all that dangerous a quest for me, if all the fights go like this one and the drop is rarer than I think, I could be in for a very longer quest."  Zero says, mumbling his complliant to himself.  This could definitely be a problem but if he took his time, relaxed and focused, maybe it wouldn't be as bad a quest as he was worrying that it might be now.

Rather than immediately go searching for another boar pup and jumping right into another fight, Zero decided to slow things down, let his energy recover just a tiny bit and look for some more materials to gather.  The thought had crossed his mind that if he was able to gather up a decent number of materials, he might be able to either barter them or sell them in order get his hands on some better equipment and improve his chances of survival even more.  He wasn't sure how representative his first search was of how easy it was to find materials, but since he was going to let his energy recover a bit first any way, he might as well see if he could find anything.

The results of his search were less than ideal.  While taking his time and waiting for a tiny bit of his energy to recover for the next battle, he quickly made the discovery that finding materials outside of combat was not an easy task.  The reality was that any item that could be farmed here outside of combat was likely at a premium so finding materials would not be an easy feat for most part.  If players could get materials and use them for crafting without having to fight monsters and risk a sudden and possibly painful death, any such location where items like that would spawn would be highly coveted and likely picked over repeatedly.  Still it was with a look and taking the time to do that had allowed him a few moments to recover one point of energy so it wasn't a waste.  Being able to use his sword art skill and take out the boar pups quickly was definitely worth slowing things down for just a few minutes.

It didn't take long once resuming his hunt for Boar Pups that he was able to come across another one.  Zero wasn't trying to be stealthly or hide, but it seemed like the Boar Pups weren't really programmed for aggressioin or to attack unless they had been attacked first.  He knew that some mobs in other MMOs would generate a tiny bit of aggro as soon as they saw or heard a player enter their area and immediately attack but it didn't seem like these quest essential Boar Pups were programmed for that.  Maybe it was done so that other players wouldn't slaughter them all and then leave the players who were trying to complete the quest high and dry and without any means of gathering the required materials for their quest.

Zero focsed just like he did before, slowing his breathing down and narrowing his eyes on his target.  There was no need to blow through all of his energy, a basic strike would suffice.  If he could hit first and get some decent damage on it, he should be able to take it down before it is able to do any significant damage and even if it does, he can just rest up for a little bit and recover.  Focusing on his target ahead, he inhales and exhales with each step as he runs towards the boar pup.  As he nears his target and feels the Swort Art begining to activate, Zero brings his heavy blade down on his target with a mighty heft.  Once the blade connects, Zero immediately sees one word flash on the screen in front of his eyes, "Critical".  Before the boar pup could even react to what was going on around him, he exploded into the shimmering particle effects and was destroyed.  Once the battle results popped up on his screen, Zero checked it once more, but had once again proven unsuccessful in finding the required quest item.  With a deep sigh, he decided to take another minute, search for some more materials, then continue on his hunt.  At the very least, killing so many mobs while completing this quest should help him level up pretty quickly.

"Take the beginner quests they said, it will be easy they said.  While it hasn't been difficult, this sure has been more annoying than the first part of the quest line.  Though, I guess considering I almost died in what is supposed to be a death game, maybe I should be a bit more happy that this part isn't going as difficult as the last one did.  A little simplicity would probably be good for me.  Though I have to see, I feel like I'm getting the hang of this big sword now."  Zero was largely just conversing with himself, at first cursing his luck on the drops for the mobs so that he could finish the quest, then remembering how close he was to death during the last quest so maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that this one wasn't as exciting.

Zero decided to take another moment look around and take in his surroundings, hoping to maybe come across some more materials that he could use outside of the quest.  It didn't take him too long to find another non-quest material that he could use.  That made two that he had managed to find so far during his quest through the plains hunting boar pups.  When he got finished, he was hoping that maybe he could have a minimum of five in his inventory.  That should allow him to barter a good little bit with some of the local blacksmith players.  Being able to get himself a hold of a decent weapon with some good enhancements would go a long way into making him a lot more powerful and more adept at surviving here.

Zero was once again starting to feel pretty confident in himself, things dids seem to be falling his way a good little bit.  While it wasn't quite going his way on mob drops for the quest, he was having a bit of luck doing some other resource gathering and that could make things later on a bit easier for him.  Plus, it didn't seem like it was taking him very long to come across the boar pups once he decided to start looking for them in order to advance along in the quest.  Just like before, without much searching, he was able to find another one of the small mobs out by itself.  This was another bit of fortitious luck.  Fighting them one at time had made things much easier, while he was sure even in a group of two or three they shouldn't be too dangerous, fighting them one at a time would allow him to keep recovering his energy so that he could fight to his fullest abilities.

Zero drew his blade from his back and rushed the boar pup, once again hoping to gain the element of surprise and take the boar pup out quickly and without any risk to himself.  However, Zero wasn't quite prepared mentally as he was last time and didn't notice a large stick that he crushed underfoot, alerting the boar pup to his presence and it deftly dodge out of the way of his attack with ease.  Having put more of his weight into the swing than he usually did, he kind of stumbled forward after missing the attack.

The boar pup was doing what it had been programmed to do when not in combat, digging through the dirt like a real boar would, looking for its next meal and just doing general wild animal things like it was programmed too.  Most of the time, players left the boar pups alone, they weren't worth much experience outside of beginning players and they never dropped anything unless the player was on a quest.  Still, the boar pup's A.I. was still programmed to listen for the sounds of approach and when it heard the loud snapping of a branch echo through the plains, it moved to the side and immediately dodged an attack from a player.

The boar turned and attempted to skewer the player with its tiny tusk, however the player had stumbled forward and had just avoided being hit by the tiny tusks by the thinnest of margins.  The boar pup squinted it's eyes at the player and stomped its hooves in the ground, signalling that it was about to charge and attack once again.

Zero took a deep breath and tried to calm himself, though he was in a bit of a panic as he lost his balance and stumbled forward.  He could even feel the rush of air against the back of his neck as he had just barely managed to avoid being hit by an attack by nothing more than sheer luck.  It was something that he was growing annoyed with himself over.  He wanted to see what he was capable of, what he could accomplish in this world with his own two hands and yet every time he was confronted with a challenge, it felt like he was surviving more by luck than by skill.  It frustrated him to no need and it got him to think that maybe he wasn't as skilled as he thought he was, maybe gathering all the knowledge that he had didn't equal being as proficient with it here as he would have thought.  This thought seemed to confirmed as he spun around on his heel and tried to slice the boar pup and hit him with an attack but once again he hadn't figured the distance correctly and missed the attack completely.

Muttering almost silent curses to himself, Zero brings up his blade in what he hopes would be a defensive position.  In the biggest round of combat he had ever experienced, he had seemed to have had better luck when he calmed himself down and allowed himself to read his opponent first and then react accordingly.

The boar pup snorts and squeals as it takes off running at the player, once again attempting to run him through with his tiny boar tusks.  There was no logic or strategy in its attack or charge, just the simple programming for a wilderness creature to attack without relenting until whatever it was fighting was defeated.  It didn't care about the player and didn't even register the stance that the player was taking.  That is why it would come as a bit of a surprise to the boar pup with the flat of the two handed straight sword pushed against its body, moving the boar out of the line of the player and causing the attack to miss completely.  As the boar pup tries to gore the player, the tiny tuck of the little mob finds no purchase, sailing harmlessly through the air and hitting nothing at all.  The boar's momentum carried it forward, just like when the player missed and stumbled forward a matter of mere moments before.  The pup snorts and digs its front hooves into the ground, putting all of its weight into stopping its forward momentum and turning around to face the player once more.

Zero calmed his nerves and relaxed, taking in his surrounding and focusing on the boar pup.  He had been doing his best to learn the pup's patterns and he had noticed that whenever the pup, and boar's in general, would lower their heads and stomp a hoof into the ground, it was a sign that they were about to charge and attempt to gore the target.  Taking a deep breath and silently sending up a prayer that this would work, he hoped that the application of a basic physics principle would work in this world and give him an advantage.

With the extra ranged granted to him by his very large sword, Zero waited until the boar had just gotten into range before making his move.  Rather than attempting to attack, which could potentially cause him to take damage at the same time as dealing damage to the boar, he instead used the flat of the blade to apply some force against the body of the boar pup.  It was a similar principle to that used in Jui Jitsu, stopping an opponent's attack directly required more energy and would tire you out quickly, however with much less effort you could redirect the opposing attack and give yourself an opening for a counter attack.  The plan worked perfectly, causing the boar pup to miss and stumble forward wildly.  As it moved to stop its forward momentum, Zero moved in for the strike, activating his Straight sword art ability and slicing deeply into the boar pup, felling the creature in one blow.  A big smile comes across his face as he notices that this boar pup had finally dropped a tusk. Feeling a bit smug and losing his attention on his surroundings, Zero doesn't notice another boar pup charging up behind him.

The boar pup spawned not too far away.  Almost immediately upon spawning in, it noticed another boar pup fighting with a player.  Most of the time, a boar pup's A.I. was only programmed to attack when it was attacked, however in this situation the aggro that the player generated had also caused the hate to transfer, allowing the second boar pup to attack.  After snorting and stomping its hoof into the ground, it rushed forward and attempted to skewer its target with its tiny tusk.

The attack was successful, smashing hard into the back of the player's armor, dealing the full damage and knocking him forward slightly.  The boar pup had managed to get its hit in and was preparing to launch its next attack.  There was a small window of cool down time in between when the boar pup could attack with its tusks, which even with a few other options available to it, the tusks were the surest and most effective way for the boar to fight against the player.  It snorted once more and dug its hoof into the ground as it prepared to attack again.

Zero was feeling quite pleased with himself, he had been able to beat three boar pups without taking even a single hit.  Sure it was taking a while to gather the boar pup tusks, but with as easy a time as he was having taking out these boar pups, it should only be a matter of time until he could get all the items that he needed to complete the quest.  This was going a lot more smoothly than the first time he had gotten into combat with the normal boar.  These boar pups were definitely designed to be an easier fight than what he had fought before out in the wild and it was making things much easier.  Maybe if he took his time and focused on training and growing in skill he could reach the front lines in no time.

Just as he was feeling full of himself, there was a sudden jolt of pain that knocked him forward and off balance.  As he was pushed forward, he turned to look at whatever it was that had done that and saw another boar pup.  He should have known better than to have allowed himself to lose sight of his surroundings and forget about his situational awareness.  Being off balance as he was, when he turned to attack, he swung wildly and missed the attack.  As he spun around with the momentum of the attack, he faced the boar and planted his feet firmly in the ground, preparing himself for the next attack from the boar pup and the next attack he was going to launch when ready.

As the boar pup snorts and lowers it head, preparing to strike again, a massive blade passes over its head, cutting a few hairs off the top of the creatures head, but other than that doing nothing, not even damage to the small boar.  The stomping of its hoof into the ground was the final preceding animation before the mob would attack.  The boar pup throws its small tusk up, aiming right for the center of the players chest, colliding with its armor in a thunderous blow.  That armor was nothing more than vanity, so the attack's damage algoritham calculated normally, doing the full damage that the boar pup could do in a single blow to the player.  Without so much as even a moment of hesitation, the boar pup got ready to begin its attack animations once again, as soon the brief cool down period between attacks wore off it was ready to strike once again.

The boar pup drove a tusk hard into Zero's chest, while the sound it made was like that of it hitting iron, the truth was that he felt and was dealt the full brunt of the creatures attack.  The blow had hit him right in the chest, dead center of his ribs, and while physcially he knew that his body hadn't had the wind knocked out of him, his brain was telling him other wise as he struggled to breath for just a moment.  As he collected himselft and forced his body to move through the perceived pain,  Zero locked eyes with the boar pup and brought his blade up high over his head.

Breathing in deep and letting out a loud, almost primal yell, Zero brought the blade down on the boar pup with all of his strength.  Since the boar pup hadn't moved from its location after the last attack, the trajectory of the blade was perfect to slice into the boar and deal a good amount of damage.  He almost didn't even notice it when the word "Critical" pop up in the air in front of him when his strike hit, the only way he was truly even aware of it was when the boar pup exploded into its shimmering particle effects and the battle results screen popped up in front of him.  Zero didn't allow himself to get caught up in celebrating early this time, he did notice that he had gotten another boar pup tusk but he needed to make sure that he was aware of his surroundings, getting caught off guard like that again could be extremely hazardous to his health.  Considering how rough that was, Zero decided to take a breather for a few moments to recover his HP and energy a bit.

Zero had decided to take a breather in the relative safety of the forest where the first part of the beginner quest line started.  He could recover there in relative safety and shouldn't have to worry about any red players entering the area and there would be no monster spawns while he was in there.  There was a part of him that thought about just going ahead and finding another boar pup and fighting it and trying to get this fight over, however battling with the boar pups meant he would be in an area where potentially other monsters could spawn, it was better for him to take a few minutes, let his HP and Energy fully recover from the combat that he had just experienced, then return to the hunting grounds.  Worst case scenario, he would have only wasted a few minutes of time but would have gotten himself back to full strength in case something else attacked him that was stronger than the boar pups he had been fighting.

While he was resting, he kept his eyes open for any materials that he could potentially gather and take back with him too town.  The thought that perhaps he would be able to find enough that he could barter for some new equipment was something that was very appealing to him.  If he got a piece of equipment from this quest as he suspected, he could potentially get a good set of equipment pretty early on in the game and up his changes at survival and getting to the front lines tremendously.
