[PP-F4] 'steel'ing oneself with Hestia

Recommended Posts

Ryo woke with a wide yawn. The sun shone brightly through his cracked open curtains as the morning revealed itself to him, and all those who resided on the eleventh floor. He sat up and rubbed the dust from his eyes. He swung his body to the side, and let his feet touch the now sun warmed flooring. He swiped open his menu, changing into his normal attire. His black jacket fluttered slightly as it was brought into existence, and his height increased by an inch as his boots materialized around his feet. He opened his curtains fully before stepping outside his room and making his way downstairs.

"Good morning, Pennyworth." Ryo said as he rounded the corner into his dining room. "Good morning sir. I may have something of use to you." His butler would say as he placed a paper next to Ryo's breakfast. Ryo read as he ate. The paper mentioned that the farmers have finally left that quest of 'Essence of Steel' alone and that it was finally free of people crowding it for its drop. "Hey, that's something to do today," Ryo said aloud. At first, he thought of taking it alone but then thought that Teion may want to tag along. He had only just got done with hanging out with her though and figured that she needed space or at the least some time alone.

Ryo looked at his near empty friend's list. Only a few people were on their, and all of them much more busy with other things. He scratched his head. Looked like he was going to have to solo it. Not like it was a hard quest to do, just bothersome if one didn't have a tank to draw aggro, or status effecting enhancements to help reduce the monsters evasion stat. Ryo drank his juice, downing it completely before standing up and double checking his gear. His katana appeared on his hip, it's sheathe glinting in the light. "Alright Pennyworth, I'm off. Be home soon." Ryo said, heading out the door.

The walk to the teleportation plaza was uneventful, as was the town square on floor four. The wind bit into him almost immediately. He had grown accustomed to the warm breezes of the eleventh floor. The fourth floor was a winter hellscape, saved for those with a Christmas fetish or an insatiable taste of snow. Ryo grabbed a potion from his belt, before chugging it. The potion filled him with warmth, a small trinket from Mari back when he had met her inside the caverns of floor ten.

Now that Ryo was on the right floor, he just had to find his way to the quest start. All the info from the quest log said 'northern wastes' and didn't give an exact location. Ryo sighed, unable to get over the fact of how poorly this game was tailored to players. Spotting the nearest player, Ryo made his way over to them. "Hey, hate to be a bother." He would say, as he prepared his question. "So, I'm trying to do the Essence of Steel quest, and I don't have a map. Do you happen to know where I'm supposed to start this quest at?" Ryo asked.

I continue my walk through the fourth floor that is my wonderful snowy home. Wearing just a simple blue jacket that stops at my midriff, and a black t-shirt that covers the normal amount a shirt should, and finally long black pants that stop before my shoes. I smile happily as i walk through the town of Snowfrost just enjoying what is to me beautiful weather. I look around at everything with my green colored eyes as my black hair moves ever so slightly with my movements. I look over seeing some snow shifting and spots my little familiar enjoying himself on his home floor also. A familiar that has pure white fur, and wings as black as the night. The creature being a lion the size of a large dog. I just smile and enjoy the moment before i hear the teleport gate activate, and curiously looks over to it to spot a weird sight all things considered. A man with a rather peculiar hair color walking on out onto this floor. Then the player starts to walk over to myself?

Umm you're no bother at all sir just state your issue. I say in a calm and happy tone of voice figuring that this could be the time to be of help once more with a quest, or possibly something else that could possibly be troubling them. I then hear the quest and raises my eyebrows ever so slightly. Having not expected to hear that quest, but from what i know of the quest it shouldn't be that dangerous depending on this player's strength. Well first off you shouldn't go alone that is never a good idea. The name is Hestia level 30 tank who makes it her job to help out other players. Let me join you up on that quest if you need a sturdy shield to hide behind. I say in a slightly joking tone of voice as i look at the man with just a smile on my face. Also what build are you out of curiosity? However, if you truly don't want me just go to the northwest you'll find a cave that looks kinda freaky. has a skull outside of it mess with that then supposedly the beast comes out. I tell this player no problem at all.

Ryo chuckled. "Are you offering to escort me like I'm some sort of lord then dear Hestia?" he had said with whimsy in his tone to match the woman's own. "I am more than sure that I could face it alone, I've done worse. But perhaps you're right." Ryo said, turning towards to direction of the quest start that Hestia gave him. Going at it alone wouldn't give him that twinge of glory that he needed to become the Hero of Aincrad. He had already befriended Teion, what was the harm in adding another person to the list. "Alright, I'll accept your company. Currently, I'm going for a bruiser/DPS build. So I regenerate my health and deal optimal damage." Ryo said, patting his katana. His feet crunched under the snow as he began his walk towards the quest boss. "So, Hestia. What brings you to this little snow hell of Aincrad?" Ryo asked.

Well if this is a escort for some lord you must be the rudest lord i have met even if you're the only one. Didn't even give your name after i gave mine. I say in a joking tone to this man as i walk beside him towards this quest as i idly go through my inventory and equips my curved sword, shield, and heavy armor that leaves my face uncovered. The armor having a silver color except for the sun on the left side that has a chariot coming out of it, and the right have a depiction of a move with a archer shooting a arrow with a wolf following. These two images heading towards the middle of the armor. The shield looking like Athena's shield after she added the Gorgon's head to it, and finally my curved sword that has the handle of it slowly go into the blade for a bit. My familiar just looks at the man who is going to be accompanying us before sticking close to me.

Also even if you've done worse you can never be sure what tricks this quest boss could have up its sleeves sir. Even if you're confident besides that then having two instead of one is just better safety by having someone be able to take the damage if everything heads south. I say to the man beside me as we continue to walk through the town of Snowfrost to head towards some northern corner of the floor. It's not hell sir it's my home i live on this floor in a nice little cave where i have built my shop. I say with a nod of my head not minding this floor's weather at all since it is like eternal winter/christmas time in how its weather is, and from the fact i have survival so i barely even feel the cold.

Ryo shivered, the cold wind blasting through his light armor. "Well, you can call me M'Lord. Or Ryo for short." He joked, introducing himself. "But if you mock my height. Don't, just don't." He said, being serious. The woman changed into more appropriate attire that fit her description of her role of tank. Heavy armor and a shield. The plates making noise as they shifted as she walked beside him.

"Well, that is something I hadn't thought of." Ryo said, thinking of the boss. It wasn't unheard of in video games for a boss to have a rare trigger that would catch players unaware. "Well, there's not always someone around. Sometimes you just gotta get things done, y'know?" Ryo said, as the approached a small clearing.

A skull sat alone in the center, a makeshift club beside it. "Alrighty then, I'll hold back on attacking and let you do your thing." Ryo said, taking the club and swinging at the skull. Rather than the expected gong effect, it made a rather loud twhamp noise. Like a rolled carpet hitting the floor. A few seconds passed, and Ryo drew his Katana as a bestial roar was release. Ryo turned his head toward the sound and rolled out of the way just in time as the Snow Beat landed where he was. "Alright Hestia, you're up."

I just calmly walk through the icy tundras till we reach the cave where the boss is suppose to reside as i calmly wait for the beast to make itself known as i think on my items that i have, and just nods my head thinking i can handle the boss with what i have if anything. The items i have on hand, and the defense i have should be enough to handle the creature most likely. Especially along for this fight which should allow the creature to be dealt swiftly if he is anything like that Domarus character. Able to twoshot any creature he had come across. I nod my head a bit glad that you waited for me to do my tank thing as i step on towards the beast with a grin on my face. Come jack frost lets go focus on the tank. I say with a grin on my face as i then smack my sword against my shield to create a gong affect again as i activate Howl as i do so as i look at he snow creature awaiting for it to start attacking me.

Ryo recognized the Howl technique and rushed in. He and his blade spun as he attacked, his blade cutting through the legs of the snow beast. The beast roared in pain, flailing its arms around in a desperate attempt to hit anything. Hestia was able to reflect the snow beasts attack, and let Ryo scamper away from being hit by the monsters flailing. "Watch out for its arms." Ryo said. "I read that it can bypass mitigation, but I don't know how much." He said, warning Hestia about the snow beasts special ability. He figured that she already knew about the snow beasts special ability to ignore mitigation. Ryo looked at the snow Beat's health bat, and saw that it moved, but not by much. Ryo scowled, looking at his katana. It could be the strangest thing in its tier, but it wasn't enough to take care of the stronger mobs. He'd have to get a better weapon after this, and maybe some better armor.

I watch the snow beast come towards me to attack as i quickly use my shield to knock away the creature's arms with ease. The attacks being weak enough do to its rage so it is rather just blind rage guiding its attacks towards myself. I then hear your warning as i nod my head seeing that as rather useful since knowing their is a minimum amount of damage that isn't one that this thing can achieve is rather....interesting. To know their is some kind of bonus, or enhancement that bosses and quest mobs can have. Then their is the possibility that even other players can have this skill which would make my tank build rather difficult to actual be seen as useful if it can somehow by bypass all of my defense.  I look towards the beast, and figures that hopefully i can try to land a strike against it with my blade to try and inflict some bleed. My only chance to actually deal useful damage besides my thorns at the end of the day.

Ryo spun again, dipping in between the beasts legs slicing through them with his katana as he moved. He did his best to keep himself on the opposite side that Hestia was on so that if the beast were to gain interest in him he would have plenty of time to react and move. "Alright!" Ryo cried out, looking at the sizable chunk of damage that was now missing from the Snow Beast's health gauge. "This is going smoothly. Keep it up, Hestia!" Ryo called out to his partner, acknowledging her contribution. This was immensely easier with someone else, perhaps going at it alone was a mistake after all. Now he had someone to talk to and strategize with, rather than slugging it alone like he had originally planned. The beast again flailed aimlessly, using it's heavy thick arms as makeshift clubs as it slammed the ground around the pair of players. The beast roared again in a furious anger, shaking the snow beneath the two. The beast seemed more feral then initial reports had said. "Hang on Hestia, it seems to be a bit more feral than I had read! It could be different in some way!" Ryo called out, trying to warn Hestia of a potential trick.

I look towards the beast holding sword and shield as i quickly look at health and energy levels between the two of us, and nods my head as i see that i don't have enough hate to make me the sole hatred of this creature as i once more slams my sword against my shield. Hey come on Frosty reject! What's the matter did ol' jack frost not love you enough? I ask with a grin as i activate Howl always adding some sas since it just makes the activation of the skill all the more satisfying, and who knows maybe it could get a few chuckles depending if their are others around. Just trying to have fun with the battle while also being useful to this person that seems to be keeping an active eye on how it's behaving. Thanks for the heads up Ryo!  I yell over towards the player as i grin at the snow beast as i prepare for the inevitable hit towards my body. Knowing that such luck won't hold for the creature allowing its baser instincts to be the primary driving force of it. I glance over towards my familiar who is keeping ready encase it needs to catch me if i somehow mess up in some fashion, or if it needs to intervene in this fight.

Ryo went in for another spinning attack, but as he did the snow beast swung his leg, spraying snow into Ryo's face. "Gah!" Ryo cried, as he stepped back, the energy becoming partially drained for his sword art commencing, but not connecting. Clearing his eyes from the ice and snow, he noticed the snow beast had grabbed the same club they had used to summon it. "Hestia, brace!" Ryo called out, unsure if Hestia had noticed or not. The beast swung the bone club at her, venting some much-earned hate onto her shield. The beast roared again, swinging the club around its head. "Okay, it arming itself with the club is new. Hadn't seen that before. Almost like it's learned from its mistakes or past lives." Ryo told himself. Perhaps the immense farming of the creature caused it's AI to learn how to better deal with players. A quest becoming too easy, becoming more difficult with each completion. "Hestia! Are you alright?" Ryo asked from the other side of the monster.

I watch as the mob starts moving in a interesting pattern as it suddenly rips what was used to summon it as i just nod my head. Assuming its attack pattern is changing slightly to deal with the stress of two players, or it reached some kind of health marker which would signal this start. Not really knowing this is new from having not looked up any information about this quest before jumping right into it. I watch as the club quickly comes towards me as i move my shield to take the hit as i slide along the ground from the impact, but grins as i see the creatures health become lower ever so slightly do to the thorns upon my armor. I'm fine Ryo! Focus on trying to deal as much damage as possible, and i'll try my best to remain the hate magnet! I call over towards the player as i hope that i can get a stun off of this thing, and if my luck with this sword art will pull through.  I run towards the beast and nods towards my familiar for the combination attack to start. I dodge under the swinging arms carefully since their is no such thing as grace while wearing heavy armor. At least not for me as i dodge under the attacks til i am next to it and slice at its body twice then tosses me sword skywards as my familiar who flew into the air at my signal grabs the sword with his teeth and slices the enemy's eyes to finish the requirement for the sword art. My familiar quickly flying back down and dropping my sword into my hand as i nod at him. It's stunned Ryo! I call out with a grin.

Ryo having finally wiped his eyes clean looked back up at the beast, preparing his katana in both hands. Hestia seemed fine for the most part, apart from her shouting the roles that they had assigned themselves too. "I know, and I'm on it!" Ryo shouted as he prepared to attack the snow beast again. This was an opportune chance for himself. The beast was stunned, shown by it holding its eyes and by the visual marker underneath its health gauge. Ryo prepared his sword art and rushed at the beast. His foot was misplaced, and it had slipped on ice throwing himself off balance. "Whoa!" He cried as he hit the ground, landing on his shoulder. If this was real life, he most likely would've dislocated his shoulder and gave himself a concussion. But since this was a virtual world, he felt nothing but the tinge of embarrassment as he picked himself up off the ground. The beast removed its hand from its face, and let out another cry of anger as it became un-stunned. "It doesn't seem to be dodging me all that well," Ryo said, to Hestia. "Perhaps you should avoid stunning it next time so that your thorns can at least get some damage off." Ryo said, noting that the beast had taken all of his own direct attacks. And Hestia was a tank, after all, having it not hit her would be good if it dealt more damage, or if she didn't have thorns.

I nod my head and keeps in mind that advice going in, and also makes sure to keep that in the back of my mind for future reference to see if my build can then be refined in some manner after getting this advice if my other little tricks start to come into play. I go over all my options within my mind, and after some thinking nods and just decides to go for my strongest sword art since anything else could just be considered a waste of time. Who knows maybe i'll get lucky and get the bleed off also alongside the paralyze just for the fun of it. I look towards the giant snow beast and does a run towards the beast not a full on sprint just barely above a jog for the most part as i look at the snow beast. I then quickly do a quick dash when closer to get in front of it and then slices at it four times as the sword art requires, and doesn't see anything happen. At that i quickly try to back peddle away from it preferring to not have the option of being grabbed and squeeze like some dog toy within this creature's mind.

Ryo clenched his leather glove around the handle of his blade, the leather creaking as he did. He let out a grunt as he spun again, trading places with Hestia as he dealt damage. He felt solid contact this time around, as he did on his first strike. He turned back around to see another healthy chunk drain from the monsters health gauge. And boy, was the monster mad about that. Using the makeshift club again he struck at Hestia, only to find himself bouncing off of her shield. The beast froze, unable to move except in jitters as if he was too cold. The beasts health continued to shrink, even as the paralyze icon appeared underneath it. The beast shook once, before shattering into tiny crystals signifying its defeat. Ryo nodded and resheathed his katana. "Hestia, you beautiful creature. You didn't tell me that you have paralyze built into your shield! Bravo!" Ryo said, clapping as he complimented his partner. "Now then. Shall we head back to town and celebrate? Perhaps with something warm." He said, his potion of warmth beginning to wear off.

I look at the snow beast and waits for the strike as i feel the hit against my shield as i slide along it a tiny bit as i look up towards the Snow Beast as it seems to have a mild panic before bursting into absolute nothingness. I blink a tiny bit, and then just nods happy with the outcome of that fight as i quickly put my sword and shield into my inventory to finally be able to relax for a bit. Carrying around heavy metal can get tiring and annoying rather quickly. Which is why wearing casual clothing is oh so much better despite this weather. I then turn towards the player with a small chuckle hearing myself being called beautiful as i go to open my mouth to say something and then pauses and closes my mouth. Realizing teasing such behavior even if jokingly encouragement might not be the smartest idea i could have since i have a girlfriend. Well that is just my build Ryo. I basically put my entire fate into whatever RNG system this game runs on. Thorns, bleed, paralyze. However, your stun comment makes me wonder if the paralyze is useful, or if i should put that onto a back burner to try and find something more useful. I say in some contemplation as i walk on over toward the player as i just shake my head a little bit to clear the thoughts away. Also yes please going back into town would be rather nice since i would rather lower the chance of fighting any more mobs between here and their. By the way what did this quest even give? Is it just EXP or was their something else attached to the frosty reject? I ask curiously.

Ryo shook his hair, trying to free the amount of snow that was caked onto it. "For a tank build, it kinda depends on the target. If it's got low mobility, then Paralyse doesn't do anything but harm your build. Fewer attacks mean fewer chances for things like Thorns, or other effects to activate. But if it's high mobility then Paralyse is a great asset as it'll allow your DPS teammates to strike easier." Ryo said, explaining his train of thought. His hair, now mostly free of snow, Ryo explained to why he went on the quest. "Ah, not only the experience points but this." He said, holding out a small chunk of silvery metal, that pulsed more like a liquid. "It allows you to up the quality of equipment. My plan is to get a bunch of low-quality gear, take it to a merchant to get a demonic enhancement and then use this bad boy to add what I need to it." Ryo said, adding the metal hunk back to his inventory. "But mostly here for the experience. It'll be a good moment before I can get the items I need anyway." Ryo said, walking back to town. Hestia looked, different without her armor on. "Say, Hestia. What made you decide to be a tank in the first place? Just out of curiosity's sake." Ryo asked, hoping that idle chat would make the cold walk that much faster.

I grin a bit as the walk back to town seems relatively peaceful for the most part. No mobs having come out, or anything of the sort. With that is the equipping of the vanity clothing  a nice blue jacket, a grey shirt, and some long black pants. I smile happily as my hair blows slightly in the wind as i idly pet my familiar on the hand as he looks like he is just tolerating the petting that i do to him. Which might give the image that i am ignoring your words when in reality i am paying attention to them with much interest. So i don't understand the difference between high mobility, or not so i just kinda got from that is paralyze if i have allies. If not get something better to try and maximize the opportunity for thorns to ruin the enemies for me. I say just being honest with my lack of knowledge. Having not been extremely knowledge in gaming before having entered this one. At least having no knowledge that can be recollected back from when she was a kid and allowed to be carefree.

At hearing and seeing the weapon material it certainly sounds useful. Especially for those stuck with demonics, or possibly even just equipment with unique enhancements on it. Sounds like you got the better end of that deal then Ryo. Got some experience, and that rather good item. I say in a fake hurt tone as if i am offended i didn't get such a item myself. After that i just focus on my face enjoying the feel of the slight cold breeze against my skin. Bringing in a sense of serenity and peace for myself. I then here you question and just smiles. Being a tank was a rather easy, and only choice for myself when it came to what i would want to do in this game. I tell you as i turn my head to face you. I have played the role of protector my entire life to try and be anything else is practically beyond me at this point.i've raised my little sis, and protected her from the world that is filled with dangers. I am a protector to be the shield to give players comfort, and reassurance that things will be alright when i am near. That is what i want to give players when they see me on the battlefield. Comfort knowing that i will protect them even at the cost of my life. I say in a serious tone while having emotions flashing across my face and eyes as i speak. Determination, hope, fear, sadness, reminiscing, worry, finally bravery and unfailing courage. As if i believe i can reach the image of a protector. That i have such faith within myself. So for me to be anything but a tank sounds ridiculous to me when their are people in need of someone to make sure they are okay. So when everything becomes said and done i will be what i believe they call a Paladin in other games. A healing tank.

Ryo gave a whistle. "That's a good reason, Hestia. Let your passion to protect others fuel you, and your desires and you'll be able to do no fault." Ryo said, affirming with his partner. Her goal seemed so similar to his. He wanted to become the hero of Aincrad. The symbol of hope and peace. The player that freed players from this accursed game. "I became a DPS simply because a single man told me that I could become more than what I was. So I took his words to heart, and I aim to make him proud." Ryo said, explaining as to why he picked his role of choice. "A paladin's role suits you. I can see you as that clear as day." Ryo said, confirming Hestia's ideal and dream. "And don't worry about not knowing what to use, and when to use it. It'll come with time and some practice." He said. Ryo had some experience in games and was able to use that knowledge to his advantage in this game at least. "And hey, if you're so jealous of the item we can always do this again. Ehy?" Ryo said, egging on Hestias joking attitude.

I smile glad that this player at least some seems rather fun to be around as i quickly open up my menu and sends over a friend request with a grin. Well how about this Ryo. whenever you need someone to back you up at a quest. No matter the quest or such feel free to send me a message, and i'll be happy to come on over to assist you since we both can accomplish more then what we can by ourselves. I say with a smile upon my face liking this guy after only a few moments of interaction. Able to see this person has a good attitude, dream, and seemingly personality if anything. It also helps he seems to know lots more then i do and can help me perfect my role as a tank with knowing what to get, or when to switch out gear.  So who was this person Ryo? Who was the person that motivated you? I ask just out of curiosity as we continue heading on over back towards snowfrost.

I do grin a bit hearing the words that are obviously meant to egg me on, and i will happily play along with this. Just means lots more fun for myself. I look at this guy with a grin. Oh? Wanting to spend more time with me? Am i really that appealing and hard to take your eyes off of that you just want to stick around? I ask in a teasing and playful tone with a grin on my face. Thinking that as long as i don't give off the wrong idea Kairi won't kill me for just joking around with people.
