[F21 - SP] Draining the Lake, Again <<Nature's Treasure>>

Recommended Posts

Coming back to her fishing rod, Neo noticed that nothing had come to bite it yet. It seemed that she had to actually be in control of the rod in order to fish with it. It was a little bit sad that she couldn’t idly fish, but she supposed it was one of the many systems a video game would have to have to prevent abuse of their own systems. Plus if it was based upon her casting the line, she could cast a line and then hand it off to another player. It wouldn’t be the most effective likely because they could probably lose a fish easier, but it would’ve been nice to increase the amount of materials that could be found. There always seemed to be more in the water than on the ground.

Neo picked up her fishing pole and recast her line. Soon after, fish started to bite on it once more. It seemed that they were still around, she just had to actually let the game know that she was trying to catch them. It didn’t mind so much that there was a fishing line in the water but more about wanting someone to actually catch them. THough a strange little check, it seemed to be the way it was intended. Just meant she would have to sit there and wait for fish to bite rather than multi-task. If she was here for the peace of things, then she wouldn’t mind as much, but she was here to be getting more materials and hopefully some weapons as well. This was a trip about efficiency in collection. Though distancing herself from her weapon was probably a good idea. It didn’t seem to be able to reach across multiple floors.

Though the fish stopped biting for the moment, that didn’t really bother Neo. She knew that lulls happened and it was only a matter of time before fish were coming back to her line once more. And once that happened, she would be ready for them. That would be the moment that she would make sure to have her line out. But now, the water was still. There was nothing coming. Deciding to divert her attention elsewhere during the lull, Neo quickly looked over the the pile of resources she had gathered so far. There was quite a few materials in there, and there was also a few chests that she would be opening shortly before she left this place. She didn’t want to put the materials into her inventory just yet, it felt better when she could see everything stacked up like it was right now.

As she had expected, the lull in the fish quickly broke. And suddenly there was more fish coming onto her line than she could keep track of. At least that meant that the pile was getting larger. There was also quite a few fish that she didn’t even realize were in this lake. Not that species of fish really mattered. The game didn’t seem to care all too much about what the thing was that she was fishing up, just that it was a fish that could be turned into materials for her shop. She could probably make a sword out of these fish. Maybe that was why there was one called a swordfish. Pondering the thought, Neo realized that she forgot to reel in the latest fish and was tugged a little bit towards the water. Catching herself just in time, she pulled in the fish and set it onto the pile as well.

There seemed to be a pattern forming here. One moment the fish wouldn’t come any faster than she’d ever seen and the next there was nothing at all. It was like doing sprints with a bit of walking in between. Maybe there was a fish or two now, but it was too small to form into materials. It was what it was though and Neo was content to just wait for the next rush of fish. There was little else for her to do at the moment. THere was Macradon’s order, but that would get done eventually. On top of that, most customers were never ordering from her in a rush. If they were, they usually just took what she had in stock at the moment. All that meant was she just needed to make sure that she had some stuff in stock. But she didn’t keep all the possible food benefits in stock, otherwise she would never get the request price for things. There was also the possibility that she could start preparing for the next boss fight.

The fish started to bite at her line again, but not as fast as they had been before. At the very least they were turning into materials. So she kept reeling in the line with what fish did come. The pile of materials wasn’t getting as high by this point as she had been hoping for, but there was the few chests she had gotten. For all she knew, they held the key to replacing her current rapier. As nice as it was, it was wresting control over her mind. SHe needed to make sure that it didn’t win out. Perhaps taking it to the source of the problem would work, perhaps not. Either way, rumor had it that there was a new quest on its home floor after the event that had gifted it to her ended. That would be where their showdown would occur. Who would gain control of her mind.

Maybe she shouldn’t be doing this so much, it would lead to her just thinking in a complete loop.

The fish still weren’t biting, which was making this quite the drought of new materials for Neo. It was a little bad that they had been taking so long to actually start coming onto her line, but at the end of the day it wasn’t that bad. She would be here long enough that it wouldn’t really matter. Everything would eventually balance out, she just had to know where to start it and when to stop it. She still wasn’t sure just how far she wanted to go with this but she was hoping that she could get out of here with plenty in. A Short time. This drought wasn’t helping that for the time, but it would eventually lead to some more fish. At least, that was what she thought it would lead to. It could just lead to nothing at all, but that was going to be the worst case scenario.

The fish started to bite once more, and Neo was beginning to think she might wrap this trip up. There was quite a few materials for her to have and the fish definitely seemed to be slowing down. Maybe a little bit longer and then open up the chests that she had. It would be nice to see just how many items she could get from them. Though recently, the drops she had been getting from chests seemed to be rather lackluster. Perhaps today would be a bit different though. Though she would probably have to just start killing goblins on this floor if she really wanted to be getting the weapons that she wanted. Those seemed to have better odds of giving her what she wanted, though it was still quite risky business to be doing so.

The fish were slowing down again, but Neo didn’t mind that much. It was giving her a good chance to sit there and recollect about what she needed to do. Though there was plenty of opportunities for her to try and get the materials, now had seemed. Like a good time to do so. It wasn’t every day she could find herself a break from everything that was coming her way. There was often something that would get in her way or other that prevented her from being able to take stock of the situation. But for now, she could peacefully sit here and let the fish bite when they did as she could figure out how to move forward. It felt like life could be on pause for a bit while sitting here. Whether pausing her life was a good thing or not, that remained to be seen. But at least she could try her best while doing this.

Neo watched as the lake rippled. The fish had finally returned to biting onto her line. As she reeled them in, she realized just how large her pile of materials had started growing. She would probably want to wrap up her little fishing session here sooner than later. Though at the end of the day it wouldn’t really matter to her whether or not she actually accomplished what she was looking for. It was going to take time before she could make sure she had attained what she was looking for. She wasn’t even sure if it existed. There was rumors of a few people having the enhancement she thought would be useful, but nothing had been confirmed. Someone by the name of Death_Adder apparently had obtained a weapon with this enhancement, though the last she had heard of it was that he was nowhere to be found.

As Neo continued to try to get fish onto her line, she thought about the rumors she had heard. She knew that Death_Adder could hold the key to getting what she wanted, but it would probably be for naught in the end. She knew though that in order to replace the weapon that she was currently holding onto she would need to get something more powerful and in a different way. There was nothing that would let her be able to get something that was raw damage. So she knew that she needed to get something that was able to do damage in a different way. Something that hadn’t been done before. Something that she could do that people wouldn’t expect. That was what she was holding out for. That's what she wanted to find. But if she could find it, she didn’t know.

The fish continued to get reeled in now and Neo was trying to figure out the mental gymnastics of what she could do. She had heard of the blight enhancement, but had never seen someone use it. It sounded like something that was quite powerful though and she could use something of that caliber. But looking at it there, there was the issues that arose with everything else that she had to do. THere was the endless need to be getting more and more of these unidentified weapons to try and get lucky with getting the unique enhancements that she wanted. Maybe it was just her luck of the draw, or maybe the game was stiffing her. She couldn’t quite tell but wouldn’t put it past the game for either of those to be its fault. There was certainly the chance it was controlling every little detail of her build, it was powerful enough to do that to even the mid-level players.

The fish were coming faster now and Neo’s mind was taken off of the ideas of the future and brought into the now as she reeled in fish after fish. There was quite a few that she had gotten and her pile of materials was starting to look rather big. There were also the chests still sitting there, waiting to be opened. She knew there was no chance of a mimic around here, so she figured to wait just a little bit longer and open them up right before sucking all of this into her inventory. No sense going now though while she had a plethora of fish coming onto her line. That would just mean she wasted a perfectly good opportunity for a bunch more materials. Maybe she would wait until the net lull, that was usually a good time to get it. Unless of course that lull was because of a new chest.

Continuing to be reeling in these fish as fast as she could cast her line out, Neo was prepared for all the time she had been spending here to catch up with her. There was probably some giant order waiting for her when she got back, or maybe some people doing some early preparation for the upcoming raid. There was also the chance that other players had left her in the dust and suddenly she was irrelevant. That last one wasn’t likely, though it was on the forefront of her mind really. She wanted to be useful to the front lines, but she just felt like a supporting character to the secondary people in the raids. All she did was cook for them and that was it. She didn’t fight the good fight and she sure as heck wouldn’t be able to do it well. She’d only be brought onto the raid if they needed warm bodies to fill it up.

Neo realized that she was drifting too far off and that was her queue to start bringing this little fishing trip to a close. Making her way towards the three chests that she had, she went ahead and opened the first one. It was the most plain one, and lived up to that expectation. All it had in it was a couple materials and some col. Nothing too major considering what she was doing right now, but it would’ve been a nice little reward had she been going against mobs instead. Those things almost never seemed to drop materials. But they were the best source for her for getting unidentified weapons, at least in her limited experience. Perhaps she could try to make her way a bit more forward and start taking on harder mobs. That might help her get some better rewards in the future. Of course, it could just get her killed instead.

Neo opened up the second. Chest and was feeling much better about it. It was a chest she was unsure whether or not it would’ve been good. There was a weapon sitting in the lining of the chest and it looked like it was of decent quality. Probably a rare. Tossing it onto the pile, she decided to wait to figure out what exactly it was. She did want to make sure that she could get a large batch of items given to shield so she could also give him the bonus crafting consumable. Presumably, that would increase her chances at getting any decent enhancements. Besides, she didn’t want to make the trek all the way to his shop if she didn’t have a good reason to. Not like she really had any other options because merchants really weren’t that common among players. At the very least, the ones that were good enough at what they did.

Neo opened up the last chest that she had and was sad to see that it contained some form of armor. It wasn’t surprising that she couldn’t get another weapon, but at least she would walk away from this gathering quest with at least one. She could probably try to snag one more treasure chest before leaving for the main settlement entirely. That was all assuming that she could even get the enhancement that she wanted off of the weapon that she was going for. Hopefully that would remain true, but she had no idea if that would actually live up to be the case. She wanted to use it to become powerful in a way not other players had done, but that was all assuming that she could actually pull it off.

Getting up from opening the last chest, Neo quickly grabbed the pile of materials and finally accepted them into her inventory. There was something satisfying about watching the giant pile of materials get sucked into her inventory. Maybe it was just the feeling of actually having that large quantity rather than just getting a number on a screen. Not that this wasn’t all just numbers in a virtual world at the end of the day. Noting the quality of the gear she had gotten from the chests, she turned to look for one more chest possibly. Her necklace was growing a bit warmer and she wanted to make sure that she had gotten it all tidied up before heading back. It wasn’t long before she could see the wood of a chest poking through the ground. Starting to dig it up,  she wondered if she would get anything useful out of it.
