[F03 - SP] <<Escape>>

Recommended Posts

Right on cue, another pair of Bandit Guards populated in front of Bahr.

"Come on, guys, are you even having fun with this?" he inquired honestly, pain masking his visage.

"Not really. But we gotta," one of the bandits replied, shrugging. Bahr was surprised by the honesty of the response.

"Alright, then, let's do this," Bahr sighed, his voice lacking any enthusiasm whatsoever. He dashed forward toward the pair with he sword charged. To his surprise, both of the NPCs managed to dodge the attack! Perhaps there was something different about these guys. They retaliated with strikes of their own, Bahr narrowly managing to slink around the attacks and jump back to put some distance between himself and his opponents.

"Wow, that was pretty good! I'm getting heated up!" Bahr exclaimed, a bit more enthusiasm in his voice this time.

"We'll try to make it a good one for you!" the guards replied in unison, admitting they understood they had no chance of defeating Bahr.

With fire in his eyes, Bahr bent slightly at the knee and dashed forth with all of his might, appearing in front of the mobs in the blink of an eye. His sword charged once more, he slashed forth, carving through both of the bandits with ease. It seemed that when he went all out, they truly didn't stand a chance. And here he had been hoping for a truly dynamic fight against mobs that fared better than the rest.

It was a shame, but Bahr couldn't say he was surprised. At least a slight change in the routine to shake things up had lifted his spirits a bit. He sheathed his weapon and continued down the hall.

It occurred to him that those last bandits had known how helpless they were against Bahr. Had all of them known from the beginning, simply sticking to scripted dialogue so they could meet their end quickly instead of prolonging the inevitable?

If that were true, and they were all clones of each other (as it certainly seemed they were), what had prompted the last two to react differently? Perhaps the quest itself was somewhat of an entity of its own, and realized that Bahr was struggling and chose to shake things up. How had others fared in this quest? Had they gotten out quicker than Bahr? He set his jaw at the thought. Perhaps the quest wasn't making a mockery out of him, but he was making a mockery out of himself!

It was a sickening thought. How long would he be trapped in this maze before luck ultimately prevailed and allowed him to escape? How many bandits would he slay? And all for what? What even was the reward for this quest? Probably just some experience and a crappy potion, right? Was it really worth the effort? Would he feel accomplished after this?

Well, it didn't exactly matter whether or not it was worth it. Bahr needed to get out. If he didn't he would just be trapped here for the rest of eternity. He had thought that the Town of Beginnings had been dreadful, but this place was infinitely worse. And what if one of the bandits got the better of him at some point, and he died? He shook the thought away. No, that was impossible. Mathematically speaking, there was virtually no way these mobs could best him. He would need to miss dozens of times and take crits all the while.

Still, he would need to rest at some point. That was probably when they would get him. Even though it was just a game, players still needed things like food and rest to maintain themselves. Going without would cause them to faint eventually. Bahr shuddered at the thought, passing out due to exhaustion and dying in his sleep. It was probably what the mobs were waiting for, too.

And here it came, yet another wave of Bandit Guards. Bahr placed the point of his sword against the ground in front of him and leaned forward on it.

"Hey guys. Ready for another excit-"

"Stop right there, prisoner! Or we'll be forced to kill you!"

"Okay, what the hell!?"
Bahr shouted as he threw his hands up in the air, his sword clanking against the ground in front of him. "The last guys talked to me! What's up with the scripted dialogue!?"

Frustrated and confused, Bahr picked up his sword and dashed forward, charging it up and unleashing a harrowing slash. One mob got caught in the attack and burst into pixels instantly, while the other managed to back off and retaliate with a strike of its own. Bahr maneuvered around the jab and backed up himself. Had he simply imagined the NPCs from before having a candid conversation with him?

Bahr lunged forward with a war cry, charging up his blade as he approached and slashing viciously at the bandit with one of his Sword Skills. Much to his surprise, and chagrin, the particularly agile mob managed to dodge every swipe of Bahr's oversized blade, waiting for the perfect moment to strike and planting his spear right into Bahr's left shoulder. He coughed and quickly jumped back, gripping his shoulder where a red circle now marked his wound.

"Holy crap! You actually hit me!" he uttered in a shocked tone.

"And I'll do it again!" the bandit called out as it assumed a battle ready stance.

"No, no, you're not understanding. You're the twelfth bandit I've come across, okay? The sixth wave of two. Not a single one of you has managed to hit me yet. You're the first!" he remarked with a still shocked expression. He almost felt like giving the bandit a round of applause.

"Wait. I'm really the first?" the bandit asked, loosening his stance a bit.

"Yeah! That was remarkable!" Bahr responded. He would have been mad if that hadn't been so impressive. To dodge so many strikes and deliver one back at Bahr and actually hit? On the surface, this bandit didn't seem to have superior stats to the others, but it was definitely different.

"Wow. I'm not really sure how to feel about that," the bandit remarked, scratching the back of his head. "On the one hand, it's kinda cool that I'm the first to do it. On the other hand, I feel kinda screwed now. You know I have the same stats as the other guys."

"Here, let's just try it again and see what happens!" Bahr exclaimed as he dashed forward, charging up his sword and letting loose a rapid succession of strikes just like before. Once again, the bandit dodged them all flawlessly, landing another hit square against Bahr's left shoulder in the same spot as before. Bahr quickly jumped back and put some distance between himself and the mob.

"You did it again!" Bahr exclaimed with a surprised tone, looking down at his wound.

"I know!" he bandit replied, sounding just as surprised as Bahr was. Their mutual excitement over the bandit being able to actually hit Bahr was unusual. Bahr couldn't really understand it. On the one hand, he was taking damage. On the other hand, this was definitely the coolest and strongest bandit he had come across so far. He felt as though they were bonding, developing some sort of shared kinship over this encounter.

"Wow, that's really something."

"Yeah."

After a few moments of awkward silence, Bahr's voice rang out again.

"Well, you know I gotta kill you now, right?"

"Oh yeah, totally."

It pained him to do so, but Bahr lunged in with all of his speed this time, appearing before the bandit in a flash. He tore into the NPC countless times before he disintegrated, leaving behind nothing but a puff of blue pixels.

"Cool dude," Bahr remarked as he sheathed his sword against the small of his back.

As Bahr marched forward after his encounter with the super cool bandit, he noticed something up ahead. Why, it was another door. He rolled his eyes at the sight of it, imagining it was likely nothing more than another ruse. Then again, he had just defeated the toughest bandit of the bunch. Maybe this would would be the real deal.

He reached to open it, and then stopped. This couldn't be the end of the quest. There was probably a stronger mob on the other side of that door. Bahr's eyes flickered to his stats. The dropped health wasn't a problem - he was confident he still had enough to handle whatever was on the other side of the door. It was his Energy that was the problem. Countless times in the past, he had run out of Energy in the middle of a fight and been forced to resort to basic attacks or burning turns waiting for the Energy to replenish. If he did that here, after investing so much time into this horrid escape, he would never be able to forgive himself. No, he would wait for just a little while longer until his Energy fully replenished.

Now that he had actually found what he assumed to be the exit, he figured it probably wouldn't a bad idea to switch back to his combat gear. He opened his menu and navigated to the equipment menu, but paused before switching his gear back to normal. He decided against it at the last minute, dismissing his windows and opting to stick with what he currently had. Based on the difficulty of the quest so far, he didn't really feel like he needed his best combat gear on. Besides, if he came across a lootable mob on his way home, he would already be well equipped to get something good from it. No, keeping his current gear on for the time being was the right choice. Since he lived on the tenth floor now, there was no telling what sorts of creatures he might bump into on his way from town to his house.

A quick glance at his stats told Bahr that his Energy had been fully restored and he was ready to go. Knowing that another scheduled encounter with Bandit Guards was right around the corner, Bahr hastily twisted the doorknob and pushed through the threshold. Just as he had suspected, there was another mob waiting for him on the outside. It was an absolute giant of a man, holding a huge club. He patted the club against his hand impatiently, waiting for Bahr to approach. Well, Bahr didn't plan on letting the oversized man down.

He charged up his blade, started running forward and... promptly slipped on a puddle. The warden laughed at him.

"Bahahaha! It's a miracle you made it out alive! How did a dunce like you get through all of my guards?"

"Oh, you know. One at a time, sometimes two at a time. It really depended on the guard. The last one gave me a bit of trouble, admittedly."

"You sure are confident for a man who just fell on his face in front of the warden," the Bandit Warden remarked as Bahr rose to his feet.

"That's because I know I can beat a pipsqueak like you, easy," Bahr retorted very matter-of-factly. It was true. If he could just get his damn Sword Art to hit, he was sure he could shred this 'boss' into confetti with a single attack. Wanting to see his new and most powerful Sword Art in action, he once again charged up his blade, but was forced to disengage the skill and dodge. The Bandit Warden had brought down his club, hard, creating a small crater in the ground where Bahr once stood. Again, the mob laughed.

"'Pipsqueak.' Alright. We'll see about that," he said, his voice having suddenly gone cold. Bahr rolled his eyes. It was big talk, but this NPC didn't have a cold chance in hell of defeating Bahr. Just like the mobs before, he would need to miss dozens of times while eating crits the whole while.

Bahr charged up his blade, but was once again forced to disengage to dodge one of the Bandit Warden's clumsy and uninspiring attacks. It was like the thing was just flailing that club around with no rhyme or reason. No form to be had whatsoever. It was almost a little embarrassing. How had something so weak and clumsy become the leader of the bandits Bahr had faced to get here? Though, they weren't exactly anything to brag about, either. Save for the final one Bahr had faced.

Still, Bahr was annoyed. When would he get the chance to use his new Sword Art? If he kept playing defensively like this, there was a chance he would never get to. Ever time he was forced to disengage the Sword Art, it at up a tiny amount of his Energy. Not enough to be concerned about now, but if things went like this for too long, he could be in trouble.

Bahr actually played defensively for quite awhile, deciding not to charge up his sword until he felt absolutely certain that he could pull off Galaxy Destroyer. He dodged countless swings, waiting until the right moment to strike. After a few minutes, the opportunity presented itself. He dashed forward as his eyes changed in coloration, the irises taking on the hues of a nebula dotted with countless tiny white specks. He tore into the the creature with enough ferocity to render a galaxy in two. Moments later, the Bandit Warden exploded into blue pixels and Bahr sheathed his sword against the small of his back, silently walking away. He felt like he should have been delivering a cool one-liner or something, but he was honestly exhausted and just wanted to get back home. He wandered back to the nearest town, aiming for the teleport gate there so he could get back to the tenth floor.

FLOOR 10

Bahr breathed a sigh of relief as he stepped off from the teleport gate. The tenth floor was, to some, a strange place to call home. Bahr, on the other hand, thought it was perfect. The glowing crystals, the iridescent flora, the consistent and comfortable temperature... All of it was like a dream to Bahr. He had been so pleased with it the first time that he visited that he decided to call in a favor that had been owed to him for years. Within a day, he owned property on the tenth floor; a nice estate plot with twin structures. One for him, and one for Kit. Speaking of which, he really needed to get Kit up here so he could show her her new place.

He walked down the winding trails toward his home, knowing the way well by this point. He found himself endlessly amused by his surroundings. Some people incorrectly asserted that this floor was meant to represent various versions of death and hell, but that couldn't be true. If that were the case, why did Bahr feel so at home here?

Then again, perhaps that was telling. Bahr was the first person in this game to kill another player, and he had become far too comfortable with combat and death in his recent ventures. His battle against the bandit camp earlier, for instance. He had been elated when he killed the first two bandits. He knew that they were merely computer generated objects, but they were still human in appearance. He hadn't even hesitated to cut them down.

And when he fought the final Bandit Guard, he enjoyed taking damage because it was a change from just constantly destroying everything in his path. He had actually liked getting hit. The old Bahr would have never enjoyed such things. In fact, it was the thing that Bahr had been most afraid about when it came to trying this game out. Zayne had had to talk him down and bring him to his senses. If only Bahr had chosen to remain on the outside, perhaps his friend would still be alive.

As Bahr had suspected, something did decide to jump out and have a go at him on his way home. The mobs here on the tenth floor were tougher than most that he had experienced, but he wasn't frightened. He had just witnessed the raw power of his newest Swort Art. He unsheathed his blade as he effortlessly dodged the clumsily sentient mushroom, charging up and getting ready to attack. As he lunged forward, his eyes adopted the same color as before, his irises changing into the color of a nebula dotted with countless white specks. He slashed deeply into the mushroom, causing it to double back in agony and cry out. However a mushroom was supposed to do that.

To Bahr's surprise, he managed to knock off half of the creature's health in a single swing. It may not have seemed that impressive given his recent performance against the bandit troupe, but for creatures on this floor, that was a mind-boggling amount of damage.

The power of the new Sword Art was absolutely intoxicating. Bahr simply couldn't get enough of it. He wanted to use it over and over ans over again, Energy restrictions be damned. He charged up his blade once more, the power yet again seeping into his eyes and causing then to adopt that nebula-esque hue. He leapt forward and brought the sword crashing down into the disgusting shroom, absolutely eviscerating it and causing it to blow up into a million tiny blue pixels.

He didn't even pay attention to the loot panel, dismissing it and sheathing his sword with a pleasantly surprised look on his face. He never could have imagined two-shotting a creature like that even a day before. Now, with the power of his new Sword Art, it was a breeze. Who would have thought that a one rank increase in a single skill could bridge the gap between feeling powerless and all powerful?

Bahr's thoughts again returned to his newly violent outlook on life. The fight against the Glowing Shroom just moments ago was just another example. He had become so intoxicated with power that he felt compelled to keep going, no matter the cost to life or limb. He hadn't even cared that there was a very real chance a mob like that could kill him. In fact, he had been so drunk on power that he didn't even believe losing was possible. Outside of combat, he could regard these experiences a bit more rationally and come to conclusions about himself and the true nature of his reality. But in the heat of battle, it was like he transformed into a completely different person. Was the version of himself that he felt in the present the real him? Or was the real him the one that came through in the middle of combat?

After a long walk and a lot of soul searching, Bahr found himself at the edge of his property. Upon stepping foot into his yard, he immediately felt a bit more calm and at ease. It was one of the many reasons he had selected his place. It had a certain kind of serenity to it that he hadn't felt anywhere else in Aincrad. He felt completely at peace here.

He calmly approached the small waterfall that was on the property and took a seat on a nearby glowing rock, his feet just edges from the pond that pooled at the bottom of the waterfall. He observed the steady stream that the pond drained into it, its various twists and turns winding through the yard before disappearing into a nearby crack into the wall, carrying it off property.

Truly, he was home. There was no need to internal turmoil here. No desire to fight. Nothing to worry about.
