Just when Bahr thought he was done, he seemed to get dragged right back in. As one of the only people capable of pushing back the mid-leveled Zombie infestation, he had no excuses. It was either stick around and splatter rotting viscera against the walls, or leave and let the noobs fend for themselves. As much as Bahr considered his time valuable and not well spent on people he didn't know, truthfully he was a pushover in the end. The idea of players at lower levels succumbing to the masses of desecrated husks due to his inaction filled him with a sense of dread and guilt that was difficult to succinctly describe.

And so he sighed, opening his inventory and once again navigating to the inventory panel. There, he selected a few consumables and popped them all, granting himself improved physical capabilities, as well as ensuring his rewards would be greater this time around.

OBNOXIOUS CORN DOG CONSUMED (+45 MIT)

So many zombies, so little time. Well, that wasn't entirely accurate. He actually had all the time in the world. As far as he knew, anyways. Was there a timer for this event? There was honestly no telling.

But the first batch of zombies since his epic return had finally arrived. He dashed into the middle of the tiny horde, spinning in Legend of Zelda-esque fashion to smack all four of the mobs by swinging his massive wedge of a sword in a gigantic circular arc. "YAAAAA!" he yelled as he did so, sounding like a Link with a deeper voice. Of course, he had to give himself a little chuckle afterward as a reward for such a clever joke.

That chuckle cost him dearly, though. Well, perhaps not dearly. Barely at all, actually. One of the Zombies managed to close in and rake its claws against Bahr's back, but it didn't hurt as bad as it had hurt the last time he fought them. His stats hadn't increased - or so he thought.

A cursory glance at his stat window revealed that he had indeed received a stat boost over his last encounter with the Zombies. Why might that have been, he wondered? Whatever the case may have bee, he figured he would probably be able to find out after he had finished dispatching these mobs. If he took the time to check everything now, while in the midst of battle, he would almost certainly take more damage than it was worth. That was just the sort of thing a noob would do. And Bahr was not a noob.

So he swung his sword in a wide arc - rather flippantly - and destroyed the remaining mobs that surrounded him with ease. Afterward, he opened up his menu and navigated to the inventory panel, where he noticed that a few of the items that he had purchased from the concession stand had suddenly become considerably better than they had been before.

That was interesting. When that these consumables been improved, he wondered? Or had he simply gotten a tainted batch with the last rotation of goods he had purchased? That was also a distinct possibility. Was that why everything had tasted so godawful? No - the consumables he had eaten before diving into the Zombie horde had tasted just as horrible this time as the time before. Perhaps it was tied to the achievement point that had randomly decided to appear within one of his windows. It seemed to suggest that things with the event were changing.

"YAAAA!" he yelled as he attempted to hold back laughter, spinning around while holding out his blade to carve in a wide circular arc into the next batch of mobs that had appeared, just as he had done to the last grouping. It had worked then, and it worked just as well the second time. But ye again, a Zombie managed to get a scratch on him - which was admittedly very annoying.

But that wasn't a problem. Because of the newfound hype that was these improved consumables, Bahr felt as though he could take hits for days without slowing down. In fact, he didn't feel threatened by these things at all. Let them come. Let them rake their claws against his flesh. It didn't matter. He would simply spin around, strike a cool pose, and then immediately completely eviscerate them with his blade. It sounded easy. It was easy. And he intended to prove it.

So he did exactly that. He spun around, struck the dorkiest pose in the history of Aincrad, and then lashed out swiftly with his blade, swinging it in a wide arc. Unfortunately, he had gotten too cocky with this maneuver, and only managed to strike two out of the three remaining Zombies. The one that remained stared upon him with indignation before cackling maniacally, its shrill screech emanating through the tent at a decibel level that could never be produced by a living creature.

Frustrated, Bahr decided that his only course of action was the laugh back at the thing, increasing the pitch of his voice to comically high levels in an attempt to match the creature's decibel level. The Zombie returned fire by cackling once more, leaning forward as it did in a display of dominance. Bahr feigned an offended expressino before retaliating with yet another screeching wail of a laugh right back at the Zombie. But the Zombie wasn't done yet, and joined in on the mayhem. The two then stood there, faces red, noses only inches apart, screaming their laughter as loudly as physically possible for all to hear. Bahr felt like he was losing his healing. In fact, he was sure of it. There was a ringing sensation that he simply couldn't shake. Was this what tinnitus felt like? Certainly, it had to be something like tinnitus. But that didn't stop him from continuing the onslaught of fake comedic reaction.

Wow. How long had they been screaming at each other? Surely it had been at least five minu-

It had only been, like, twelve seconds. Amateur hour.

That being said, Bahr was already totally out of breath, and the stench coming from this monster's mouth was more revolting than anything Bahr had ever experienced. If not through the sheer willpower of desiring to best this creature in the decibel duel, Bahr would had certainly either passed out as a result of the noxious fumes or simply vomited - if that was even a thing you could do in Aincrad. Something told him that it wasn't otherwise it's something he would have already done countless times by now. So far, since he had entered the game, he had not vomited. Not once.

He was done with this, though. He was becoming lightheaded from all of the screeching. And so he simply flicked his sword forward, allowed it to connect with the Zombie, and watched as it perished into a cloud of azure polygonal fractals that were carried away on the draft that ran through the tent.

Nice, it seemed that there was a break in the waves coming. Just in time, from the looks of it, as Bahr's energy was nearly fully depleted. Handling a full wave at this point wouldn't be close to impossible it would be impossible

It seemed that these little breaks in the Zombie waves were conveniently times with his lack of energy. Was the event designed this way, or was it simply dumb luck? Probably the former, seeing as though Bahr usually had no luck to spare. But if it was the latter, perhaps his luck was changing after all. Nah, that was a pipe dream. Luck had never really been on Bahr's side - he had always had to work extremely hard to get what he wanted or needed. It was on his back that the things he had made reality had come to be. Right?

Well, probably. But there had to be a bit of luck in there somewhere.

At least a little bit. The smallest molecule. After all, if he had no luck at all, not even bad luck, he never would have wound up trapped in this stupid game to begin with. With his friends either dead or missing.

But it wasn't all bad. He had met some interesting people along the way. None that he felt particularly close to, save for perhaps Kit. But how long would that last? He hadn't seen her or talked to her in ages. It was probably just that she was busy, as whenever he checked his friend list she still had location data available.

Then there was Oscar - who was also trapped in the tent right alongside him. The poor man. Bahr knew better than to underestimate the Azure Crusader, but the last time they had fought together, he hadn't exactly had a stellar performance. But that was to be expected - he was a lower level than Bahr or his opponent, so it made sense that he would struggle a little bit in a battle between two people over twice as strong as him.

But that was back then, and this was now. How much had Oscar improved since they had last seen one another? Undoubtedly he had become loads stronger, especially if he had followed in Bahr's footsteps and risen through the ranks as rapidly. The last Bahr had heard, Oscar had actually already graduated into the second tier. One didn't do that without having a strength rooted deep within their soul. Oscar definitely had the fighting spirit.

But the next batch of mobs had arrived, so Bahr needed to cast away all thoughts of such nature. It would be unwise to distract himself with such trivial thoughts while in the midst of battle. So he charged up his blade and rocketed toward the next grouping of Zombies, carving into them with his sword as soon as they were within range. Two were struck with normal blows, a third instantly being vaporized by the attack, while the fourth managed to come out of the encounter unscathed.

All of the mobs that remained were on the backswing - they had not seen Bahr's attack coming, and he had taken them all by surprise. It was the perfect opportunity to bust out another move and hopefully wipe them all out for good. So he poured crimson energy into his blade once more, ripping it forward and cleaving it into the last three that remained. To his delight, the one that he had failed to hit earlier had the Bleed status inflicted against it and perished immediately, while the other two sustained normal hits that would undoubtedly sap the rest of their HP away. And it did. For one of them, at least.

The other managed to hang on by a sliver. Ah, Bahr had nearly forgotten that this was a thing. Actually, he had forgotten that it was a thing. That's why the ghoul managed to extend its arm and inflict a gash against Bahr's shoulder. The Crimson Marauder instinctively jumped backward in response.

Bahr couldn't help but giggle at himself for having lurched his body backward so suddenly and awkwardly. Sure, he had taken a hit, and that hit had caught him off guard, but what was he so afraid of? His health bar had hardly moved whatsoever. Actually, he couldn't hold back the laughter any more. It bellowed out of him from somewhere deep in his abdomen, and he keeled over, unable to keep himself upright and placed his hands against his knees.

The Zombie, seemingly also amused, because to laugh as well - albeit in its own ghoulish way. "Hey, stop that," Bahr demanded, "Only I'm allowed to do that. Not you. I hate it when you guys laugh. Grow some vocal chords or something." This only caused the Zombie to laugh even harder. Was it possible that it had a sense of humor?

Didn't matter. Within a second, Bahr had flashed over to it and given it a love tap on the chin with the pommel of his sword, and the creature combusted into a cloud of blue confetti.

Just in time, too. The next wave of Zombies was upon them. Right on cue. Perfectly times, just as the past several thousand waves had been. Well, not that Bahr had actually endured thousands of waves of Zombies. It just felt like it. Because this was the event that seemingly never ended. Perhaps Cardinal had simply become fed up with attempting to keep track of all of the players in the game, and decided that now was the time for a purge. To eliminate as many players as possible and weed the herd a bit. That being said, Bahr hadn't seen anyone die yet, nor had he heard the frenzied shrieks of someone whose friend had just died.

Whatever. Not the time to thing about that now. Bahr dashed forward, sword brimming with a crimson energy that seemed to drip from the blade, and ripped the steel edifice through the next batch of Zombies that was closest to him. All of them were hit this time - a welcome surprise. One of them, however, managed to reach out and inflict a bit of damage back at Bahr.

But hey, that was okay. Who was Bahr to judge? It wasn't like he would sit around and idly while someone ran up to him and his friends and started swinging. Even if he knew he was weaker, he would fight with everything he had. That's all that this Zombie was trying to do - protect itself and the people- er, mobs that he - presumably - cared about.

Bahr had the strangest feeling that that last thought had been formatted strangely.

That being said, it needed to be put down. It and all of its revolting brethren. He was going to smite them. Yes, by the time he was done with them, they would be smote. Smote? Smoten? Bahr was going to settle on smote. Smote seemed like the appropriate word to use in a situation like this.

So he lunged forward, charged up his blade, swung it, connected with all four of them, and watched as they burst into clouds of polygonal blue fractals.

Wow, that had been an extraordinarily good exchange. He had taken damage, sure, but that was to be expected in an event like this. There were countless Zombie shambling around - one of the was bound to hit Bahr eventually. It didn't matter how quick or limber her was. Eventually, he was going to get caught between a rock and a hard place and be forced to take damage. Not that that was what had happened here, though. If he was being honest, he had simply been too lazy to move out of the way of that attack. He cared more about making sure he was in the right position to deal damage again when the time was right.

And it had worked out, after all. Two attacks and four Zombies were dead. Those weren't numbers that anyone could really dispute. He had succeeded. He was successful in his annihilation of the fleshy sacks of desecration.

That was all that truly mattered in the end. And hey, even if his HP did get low, he had consumables to help with that anyways. It always paid to come prepared - especially if you were mind numbingly swatting away swaths of boring mobs that never seemed to end.

Bahr's mind hearkened back to his original theory about this event and its mobs. Was it simply a never ending rampage of mindless goons instructed to fill the tent and attack anyone with a green or orange cursor? Or was it the same Zombies respawning over and over again? He had noticed peculiar patterns in some of the Zombies - a fear that wasn't present in the others. Most of the mobs didn't fear death in the slightest, but every now and then Bahr would encounter one that seemed genuinely afraid to die.

Not that Bahr particularly cared, mind you. They were mobs. They were mindless. They couldn't actually feel anything. It was probably just a characteristic built in by Cardinal. Still, he was curious.

Again, it was not the time to be thinking about such trivial things. Bahr cursed his ADHD ridden mind for constantly becoming distracted with things that were ultimately meaningless in the heat of the moment. Dealing with the mental illness had been a difficult adjustment once he became trapped in the game. It was okay at first, because the drug that he usually took to keep himself balanced out was still built up in his system. But as it waned, so too did his focus. Eventually he found ways to cope with it - one of them being mob slaying - but it still hung around over him like a dark cloud cartoonishly following someone in a foul mood. He probably had one of those, too.

Anyways, the next batch of Zombies was up. He charged his blade, sailed in toward the pack of mobs, and ripped his sword into all of them. Completely caught of guard, they didn't react whatsoever. One of them even died. Weaklings.

Just as with a batch a few waves prior, these Zombies seemed completely taken aback that someone had had the audacity to blindside them the moment that they walked into the tent, and all double back in what seemed like surprise. Or maybe they were just pushed back by the force of the attack. It was honestly difficult to tell, but in the heat of the moment, none of that really mattered anyway. The important thing was that Bahr now had the upper hand, and he wasn't about to let this rare advantage go to waste.

But was it really rare? He was dispatching these things at record pace. It seemed that he had the advantage from the start. Oh well.

Before they could recover from the recoil, he charged up his blade once more, this time fizzling and crackling with electrical energy, and ripped it into the pack of mobs. They had no time to react, and each and every last one of them blew up in a display of blue confetti that would have made a fireworks manufacturer proud.

His record time destruction of the first wave timed up perfectly in such a way that Bahr was poised to start work on the next batch as soon as they entered the arena. That was the good news. The bad news was that he had actually defeated the previous wave too quickly, and now he had to wait. It was only about half a minute or so, but when you're heated up and ready to go, it feels like an eternity. So he waited. And waited. And waited... Until finally...

They arrived.

And he lurched in and kicked the snot out of them. No, not a literal kick, a figurative kick. It wasn't like he was using Martial Arts or anything like that. No, he was use a sword. A rather large sword. Absurdly large, to be frank. There was no reason for anyone to carry around a sword so big. But Bahr did. And he carved it into the next batch of mobs the moment they reared their ugly heads, managed to inflict damage on all four of them.

Just as with the last batch, this seemed like a great opportunity to catch the enemy with their pants down. They had doubled back and regarded Bahr with the dumbest expressions physically possible upon suffering damage at the edge of his blade. At the edge of his blade? Is that a sentence that even works? That wasn't for Bahr - or his ludicrously tired narrator - to decide. What was up to them was how the dealt with this batch of zombies that was caught off guard, totally unaware, and now ripe for the picking.

Well, obviously, you annihilate them. Like any good hunter would.

So he charged his blade, sighing as he did so, the repetitive motions and overall ease of the event starting to weigh on him, and sliced into the ghouls that stood stupidly before him. He slashed straight through their hideous and agape mouths, ending their lives once and for all. Or at least he hoped.
