[EVENT - F01] Okay, Maybe They Like You For Your Body, Too

Recommended Posts

It had seemed that, up to this point, the waves of the event had been timed to a certain extent. What that extent was, Bahr couldn't tell. But he had a sneaking suspicion that, every once in awhile, the system would throw a surprise wave in there where there was usually a lull, just to keep the players on their toes. He had no evidence that this was the case - in fact, it hadn't happened even a single time so far. But it was a feeling that he just couldn't shake.

In accordance with this weird vibe he was getting, he opened up his menu and navigated to the inventory panel, populating three Offbrand Energy Drinks and dismissing the windows shortly thereafter. He didn't like these things at all. In fact, he found them to be utter revolting. But if he wanted to be ready for this surprise wave that he had absolutely no idea would come or not, he needed to suck it up and suck them up. So he did. All three of them, all at once.

Aha! What a read! Just as Bahr had suspected, there was a surprise wave waiting right around the corner. Who would have guessed it? Bahr would have guessed it. That's who.

There was just one problem. Even with the energy drinks that he had consumed, there was still a very real possibility that he could mess this up and not have the energy he needed to take them all out in time. There was only one way to be sure.

A crimson energy poured into his blade from the hilt, dripping with the edge of the steel edifice as Bahr lunged forward and carved into the horde. Exactly as he had feared, one of the Zombies managed to avoid getting hit. One died, though, so that was nice.

Now he had a couple of things to worry about. First, the fact that now he was going to have to work harder on limited energy to handle the mob he had missed. Second, pray to Cardinal none of them would cling to life with their passive ability.

But then, he messed up. He had been so trapped in the routine that he accidentally activated his Tempest Sword Art instead Of Calamity Disaster. This certainly spelled disaster for his ability to hand this grouping of mobs before his energy ran out.

Or did it?

And he sailed forward and ripped his sword into the group, he watched two of them explode into clouds of blue pixels before his eyes. Simultaneously, his energy meter took a dip. From the looks of it, he had just enough energy left over to handle the final remaining Zombie, which seemed to have been reduced to just over half of its health bar.

It was stunned for the time being, so that gave Bahr a good opportunity to collect himself and prepare for the next attack. Hopefully it would be enough to finish the job. If it wasn't he would be back to gurgling those ridiculous energy drinks. And in the middle of combat? The very thought of it almost made his wretch.

He could see it. He could see the path that he needed to take to inflict maximum damage. He dashed forward, weaving downward and bringing the blade up from the bottom, his green iris flashing to red as he poured 100% of his focus into the attack.

He didn't just hit the thing. Oh no. He eviscerated it. He had never seen a mob explode so spectacularly. As the drizzle of polygonal blue fractals rained down from above, he checked his stats to see where he was at.

From the looks of it, after a brief rest he would be back at maximum HP. He almost felt foolish for having purchased any HP consumables at all, seeing as the new buffs to the other consumables were now carrying him much further and with much less trouble than before. It wasn't like he had been in any particular trouble the time before, but he had definitely taken a lot more damage. This time was much different.

An event in which the consumables evolved as the players progressed through. Was that why it was not throwing them curveballs, such as lowering the time between waves and just pouring an overall higher volume of zombies into the arena? perhaps it was designed so that players would be forced to rely on the new buffs in order to clear the hordes.

Or, perhaps Bahr was just reading into it too much. He only had his thoughts to play with at the moment, after all. Wasn't like there was someone else around to chat idly with.

Solitude. Typical. Bahr would stick around and clear swaths of mobs to make sure that the noobs lived, but he understood that it was ultimately a thankless job in the end. Nobody was going to come up to him and share their gratitude. It was probably true that nobody had even noticed all of the work he had done to keep everyone safe. But it didn't matter.

What was truly important was just that someone did it. Who cared if he was rewarded for it? Besides, something told him that the awards he had been getting from these achievement points were a reward all their own. He would walk out of this event far more powerful than he had walked in, and that was nothing to balk at. Anything that would allow him to close the distance between himself and the frontlines, to move forward and see if she was there. That was all that really mattered.

He supposed that there were worse ways to power up than killing loads of zombies. After all, he had dumped an exorbitant quantity of time into getting to the level he was currently at. But there was only so fast one person could grind, and it didn't really matter how powerful they were in the end. What mattered was the time invested and staying alive. This event, though it seemed to drag on, was definitely still a shorter time span for the rewards than he had experienced so far.

Ah, the next batch. Right on cue. Bahr's energy had just finished fully replenishing, so it was probably about time a new wave of fleshy husks would come rearing their disgusting heads. Really, everything in this event seemed to be spaced apart just well enough that it fit Bahr's set perfectly. If they waves spawned any faster, he wouldn't be able to keep up. Any slower, and he would get bored waiting. If he were a lower level, he would certainly struggle more and fall behind. But if he were a higher level, he wouldn't get even the slightest semblance of a challenge from it.

Not that he did, anyways.

He jumped forward, blade charged, and ripped into the new horde with all of his might. All of them took damage this time around, and one even perished right away. But one of the Zombies didn't take too kindly to being thwacked, and immediately turned around, raking its razor sharp claws against Bahr's arm and sapping away a small portion of his HP.

Whatever. Damage, no damage, it was all the same now. It wasn't like Bahr was in any real sort of danger. Quit the opposite, it felt like. Killing these Zombies was like swatting away mosquitos. Sure, they were annoying and would drink your blood if you let them. But all you really had to do was simply not let them. Was Bahr the type of person to sit around and let something he could destroy in an instant get the best of him?

If you've read this far, you know the answer is no.

He charged up his blade once more, the crackling and fizzling electrical energy emanating from from its shiny surface, licking out and threatening to shock any who came too near. Since they were still within range, he simply let loose another slash in a wide arc, managing to connect with all three of the mobs that remained. One clung to life by a sliver, but the Bleed status that Bahr had inflicted onto it did it in before it could retaliate.

Taken out in the knick of time. Just as the final Zombie from the previous batch was obliterated, converted to blue confetti that slowly dissipating into nothingness, the next batch of Zombies reared their ugly heads. Passing through the entrance into the tent, they immediately noticed Bahr and began shambling toward him. This time, he didn't have the time to catch them off guard - a more direct approach would be necessary. And so he charged up and rocketed toward the grouping head-on, applying directly to the forehead. Wait a second, wrong commercial.

In all seriousness, he totally rocked the Zombies' world. Just utterly crapped all over them. Well, except for the fact that none of them died. And one didn't even get hurt whatsoever, somehow managing to avoid any and all damage. Yeah, he actually didn't own them nearly as hard as he had originally imagined. It was a mediocre attack, at best. Not even that good.

What he honestly hadn't been expecting was that they would retaliate so quickly and with as much force as they had. It seemed that this wave in particular was much more aggressive than any of the waves before them. Seeing as his HP was actually starting to dip a little bit at this point, Bahr realized that he needed to be rid of this particular batch as fast as physically possible.

He soared back into the group and attacked them once more, sweeping his blade toward them in a wide arc. He connected with the entire group, but only one fell. Two others managed to cling to life, while the final one was able to survive purely due to the fact that it had been missed the attack before. As Bahr went through the recovery frames of the Sword Art animation, one of the Zombies managed to reach out and rake its claws against his back, scoring away even more of his slowly depleting HP.

Not good. He was officially under 700 HP. He had definitely experienced worse things before, but it always started like this. He would lose a bit of HP, convince himself that it wasn't a big deal, and before he knew it he was sitting in the red scrambling to destroy his enemies before they destroyed him. It had happened more than once in the past. Given his newfound effort to think things through and keep his cool as opposed to going ape mode the moment he started taking damage, he had to do his best to not get ahead of himself and make any more mistakes.

He charged up his blade and ran it through the mobs once more, carving a decent chunk of health away and sending two of them shattering into the backscape as nothing more than piles of polygonal azure dust. One, however, managed to survive again. He was certain that he had hit it, and it had only have one HP at the time, but somehow in managed to cling to its putrid life anyway.

This thing was really starting to piss Bahr off. Why wouldn't it die? He understood that nothing ever really wants to die, but it was seriously annoying to have to continually thwack an enemy with only 1 HP and watch them live through it. He didn't even really know what to say about the situation, other than the fact that it was annoying and he wished that he didn't have to be dealing with it. He knew that his time could be spent on more productive things. Like, you know, the next wave of Zombies that was sure to show up any minute now.

So we swung his sword forward one more time, connecting with the Zombie's flesh, and peering into its health bar with confusion as it didn't move whatsoever. Bahr did a double take back to his sword, which was currently lodged deeply within the mob's abdomen, then back to the health bar, which remained stubbornly at 1 HP.

"You've got to be kidding me..." Bahr spat as he realized what was unfolding before him. The Zombie cackled in his face, the ridiculous odor coming from its bowels sending a cursed shiver down Bahr's spine. This pack of Zombies was, without a doubt, the most aggressive and resilient that Bahr had fought so far. The Zombies had scored multiple hits against him, and now this one refused to die. Even with a massive slab of metal jammed into its abdomen, it refused to let go.

Bahr, frustrated by this, twisted the blade and shove it in further. Finally, the last remaining shred of HP it have left in its health bar depleted, and the mob was no more. Bahr breathed a sigh of relief, happy that it was finally over. There were, of course, more mobs to destroy, but at least now he was freed up to do it. Hopefully he wouldn't run into another Zombie that played Unkillable for several attacks in a row moving forward.

Before he got back to killing, however, he was going to need to take a small break to recover his energy. That last bout had really taken a lot out of him, and there was absolutely no way he would be capable of taking down another wave of Zombies in his current state. He only hoped that he hadn't taken too long with that last Zombie, and that the next wave wouldn't arrive before his energy had finished replenishing. If they did, that would be a pretty sticky situation.

But for now, the coast seemed clear. In fact, there seemed to be less Zombies in the tent now than there were before. Was it possible that the event was finally beginning to wind down? That would really be something. At least a part of Bahr had resigned himself to the idea that there was truly no escape from this hell, and that he would be stuck here slaying Zombies until the end of his days.

He knew it was dramatic, but he couldn't help it. They had been fighting the undead for ages at this point. Was it really so ridiculous for at least a part of your to assume that this was it? It wouldn't end until you were ended? A part of him had almost wanted to allow himself to fall victim to the horde - to simply put an end to his misery. But he knew that if he did that, then the noobs lost one of their lines of defense and could fall. But at this point, with the volume of zombies whittling down, was that something that he actually needed to worry about?

No, not at all. He would continue to slay them for as long as it took, but it seemed that they were finally beginning to near the end of this event. Which was a relief. What Bahr had once considered an avenue into better gear and more power, he now reviled as one of the single biggest mistakes he had ever made within the confines of the floating castle Aincrad.

But that was enough of Bahr's lamenting. He had a new batch of Zombies to kill, and distracting himself with thoughts of how much he hated doing it wasn't going to be productive. Or was it? Maybe if he got mad enough, he could score some good hits and put these things down without having to worry about their passive ability. That was the hope, anyway. That had always been the hope. But sometimes, no matter how hard he tried, these things managed to make a mockery of him.

But that was okay. A new batch, a new strategy. Be mad. He was curious to see how it would work. So he charged up his blade and dove into the center of the horde, a silver glint the only indication that he had moved his blade at all. All at once, the mobs began to show the wear of the lightning quick attack, most of them having their health depleted to nearly empty while one suffered bleed damage and perish immediately.

He had momentum that he didn't want to lose. While all of the Zombies were on the back swing, he charged up his blade once more with a different Sword Art - Tempest. Yellow energy crackled and sparked from the sword's surface as it again quickly cleaved through the opposition with a ridiculously fast series of slashes, each more violent than the last. When it was all said and done, two of the Zombies had dissolved into azure dust while the third remained, taunting Bahr with the singular health point that it had remaining.

"God, I hate you things," he remarked, planting the flat edge of his sword against his shoulder and standing tall with a relaxed stance. The expression he wore was one of indignant disgust. "I've never met mobs that do this sort of thing. It's criminal. I deserve the kill, but you just won't give it to me. And for what? To survive another thirty seconds?"

The Zombie didn't respond, of course. It didn't so much as even react. Because it was a Zombie. Why was Bahr talking to a Zombie? Why did he ever talk to the mobs he fought? Even he himself didn't have the answer. He always found himself talking to what essentially boiled down to inanimate objects, and it was beginning to become a bit concerning. What did it say about his sanity that he continued to do so, knowing that he would never get a response?

Whatever. This thing would go down with a single swing. Or would it? The last one hadn't. Could he say with absolute confidence that this one would be any different? There was only one way to find out.

He flung the blade forward and jammed it into the Zombie's chest, watching its health meter to see if it depleted. It didn't Quickly, he removed the sword from the Zombie's chest and looked upon the creature with scorn. What an annoying passive. Two times in a row? That was just criminal.

It was time to end this. Bahr had reached a point where he didn't even care if the noobs got overrun at this point. He had done his part. By his estimations, he had slain over one hundred Zombies at this point. To continue fighting would be an exercise in futility. He was tired. He was hungry. He was cranky. And he was done. This thing needed to die, and when it went, so too would Bahr. Away from this place. Away from this event. Away from the stench. It was the only thing he could do to preserve his mental health at this point.

Blade forward. Jammed into Zombie's chest. Suddenly, it actually felt like dying. Its health bar depleted entirely, and moments later the creature disintegrated into a blue polygonal vapor, carried away on a draft that rolled through the tent. It was finally over. He was finally done with this putrid event.

He moseyed on over to the concession stand again, planning to use the two achievement points that had populated in his inventory during the fights. On his way over, he saw what he could have sworn to be a golden flash amidst those who were still fighting the Zombies. Was that Lessa? He had thought that perhaps he saw her earlier, but he didn't know for sure if it was true. It was the custom cloak that she wore that cemented the realization that it was, indeed, her.

Looked like his work wasn't done here yet.

It was honestly a surprise that she would be here fighting the undead at all, given how their encounter against the Lich King went. But if there was one thing that Lessa had always been, it was an enigma. Bahr didn't know why he had any expectations of her at all, at this point. She subverted his expectations as soon as they began to crop up in his gray matter, every single time. It was one of the things he admired about her.

He quickly made his way to the concession stand. Once he was done, he headed toward the area he had seen that golden flash in. Time to say hello.
