[F02-PP] Is it Edible? -- <<The Venomous Warg>>

Recommended Posts

Urbus. NIGHT barely came and visited. Even though the town and floor were right after the first, and it made sense to make a pit stop here as a growing adventurer, she never considered to hang around the floor.

She cast her gaze over to wards the edges of the depression the town set in, and wondered for a moment what lied over the town's borders. It's not like she never saw them, but... she definitely wouldn't say she was familiar.

Holding a bill she had retrieved from a merchant at the center of town, she made her way out the pub she had found herself in earlier. One mark, a venomous wolf, doused in various shades of primary colours.

It looked... incomprehensible. Was it even a wolf? It seemed to have fins where its ears were. Frankly, it looked like an abomination to her, and the closest thing otherwise a boar. NIGHT hesitated, before sending a message to a known sausage vendor she'd seen near her workshop before.

As luck would have it, Oscar was simply hanging around in his house doing absolutely nothing of consequence when NIGHT's message came in. He read the message and rubbed his chin in confusion. Warg meat? Who in their right mind would cook with Warg meat? It was stringy and disgusting and tasted much like raw chicken. Then, his eyes wandered to the bit about poison. The gears turned in Oscar's head as he put two and two together. This girl is about to do the Venomous Warg quest. Oscar didn't exactly know what her level was currently. But, on the off chance she was about to get her face bitten off, Oscar decided to grab his axe and coat and make a beeline for Floor Two. He sent her a quick message as he exited his home and sprinted towards Deepedge.

Hold off? Hold off on what? NIGHT wondered, before continuing on her way, towards the location stated on the bill. Maybe he'd assumed she was already in the midst of the fight? If so, he'd be lucky. She wasn't hellbent on getting herself into trouble just yet.

Through the woods she went, keeping an eye on her surroundings. She'd also been passed an Antidote, and she'd been fiddling with the cork on the item, carelessly stuffed into one of her other pockets, though she wondered if she'd need it soon. By her original plan, it had been crucial, if not life saving, but with Oscar getting involved?

... How strong was Oscar?

NIGHT had never interacted with someone more than marginally stronger than herself before. At least, not in combat. She'd recalled spying Cordelia in a tavern once, and she seemed rife with experience more than anything. The woman continued thinking back on her neighbours down on Floor 1, before spying a hideously coloured creature stalking a clearing; a few other, milder friends lurking about the floor.

There was her mark. She crouched down into a bush, careful not to make a sound, while keeping an eye out for what she imagined was going to be back up.

Out of absolutely nowhere, Oscar rushed past NIGHT. He had been in a full-on sprint since the moment he left his house. Again, not being completely sure of what her level was, Oscar wanted to get a jump on the enemies before she got herself snacked on by the canine adversaries. He grabbed his axe off of his back and performed a spinning blow in the direction of the wolves and the Venom Snapper. He had hoped, in all honesty, to dispatch the entire group in a single hit. Of course, things rarely went to plan and his strike was off. He managed to strike down two of the wolves, but that still left the Venom Snapper alive and kicking, in addition to one of the wolves. He swore under his breath, now forced to drag NIGHT into this fight - the very thing he'd wanted to avoid. His fears were assuaged as he looked back at NIGHT and took note of her level. At least she wasn't level 4 or something.

Almost from above, the man leapt from the bushes, a large axe in his hands, striking down two opponents at the speed of light. A flurry of lights came and went from her view, and NIGHT sat still in the bush, stunned at his strength, mouth agape. Was this how Randal felt when she'd offered to help him the other day?

With that single blow, two of the lesser creatures were knocked out, and Oscar took a moment before looking back at her wordlessly. Oh, guess he knew I was here.

Rising, NIGHT shuffled out from the brush, drawing her blade. "Thanks for coming," she mentioned, distracted with how to approach the player. It's not like they were close -- heck, she just wondered if she should've tried being a good neighbour earlier.

In her awkwardness, she tried instead to train her eyes on the enemies left on the field -- they didn't seem to do much, if not at all. They just seemed to be... gargling? Uh, mourning? It... was hard to tell.

"Aw, flapslapple."

Oscar scowled as he failed to hit the Venom Snapper yet again. Having easily dodged the Venom Snapper's attack (not really, for whatever reason it launched its attack in the complete opposite direction) he was ready to put an end to this. Unfortunately, luck was not on his side today. The weird-ass wolf thing was a touch to nimble to be struck by his mighty axe. But that was okay. Now that it was a 2v1 against the Warg, Oscar could relax just a bit. With NIGHT'S health total and Oscar's Mitigation, the two of them would have to try to get killed here. "Hey no problem buddy! I confess, I didn't know you were so high leveled. You coulda probably handled this on your own easily." He gave NIGHT a wide smile after she thanked him for showing up. He was just makin' sure nobody got their face wrecked today. Plus, helping someone out on a quest was a great way to spend his day, if he were being really honest.

"I... could?" NIGHT blinked, uncertain. To be fair, she had never really... pushed herself to her own limits before. Even with the endurance test back in Halloween, she'd gotten exhausted much quicker than her health bar had suffered. Perhaps she would've been fine. Maybe she just needed to experiment a bit more--

-- Bah, it was what it was. She felt herself smiling back, acknowledging Oscar's reassurance, taking as a compliment. With a nod, she rushed up towards the Venom Snapper, intending to stagger it with a new Sword Art she'd gotten earlier, Fight Blade.

Her blade slanted downwards behind her, she cut at the gurgling beast, slashing it diagonally from below. Spinning, she struck again, her blade going across it horizontally, before she brought it up once more to crush its edge onto the top of the warg's head, stunning it briefly. NIGHT stepped back, preparing her defenses. "Here, your move."

Impressed by NIGHT's initiative in stunning the boss, Oscar thought for sure that he would be able to dispatch the thing once and for all. Of course, he thought wrong. How he managed to miss a stationary target, he really couldn't say. All he knew was that he did and now he was thoroughly embarrassed. Or, rather, embahrrassed! Oscar exhaled forcefully through his nose when the pun came to mind. He was sure that the Bloodedge would not be pleased to know that his name was being invoked in such a way. But it soothed some of the sting of missing a target that was completely unable to dodge, so Oscar was cool with it. The shouldered his axe and glared at the Venom Snapper. He didn't recall having this much issue when he did the quest back in the day. With a defeated sigh, Oscar turned to NIGHT and gestured to the woman to finish the warg off. Clearly he wasn't going to be able to do it.

Perhaps the two figured that the Venom Snapper should've been crushed by now. NIGHT certainly thought so, judging by the two's combat prowess. But contrary to belief, today, the Venom Snapper had luck on its side.

I mean, it could also be that NIGHT didn't fully recall tooltips from time to time, but we can gloss over that, right?

When Oscar ended up smacking the ground with his axe, the impact shook the earth, and the warg was jostled -- probably into action soon enough. He gestured over to the enemy, and NIGHT nodded, stepping forward to take a swing with <Back Rush>.

Except NIGHT wasn't in a position to use Back Rush. Instead, she ran over to the back of the Venom Snapper, trying to take a swirling swing from its behind. Cardinal was having none of it that day, because as the woman missed her attack, stumbling forward, the Venom Snapper ran off in a frenzy, running towards Oscar instead. Thankfully he dodged out the way in time. Oops for her.

"S-sorry!"

He watched NIGHT fail to land her strike on the Venom Snapper. At first he figured it was fine. After all, he could clean up. But when he swung his axe and completely missed the Warg by a mile, he found himself questioning the choices in his life that led up to this. How the hell were they struggling so hard to kill one roided-out wolf?

"Oh you have got to be kidding me," came Oscar's exasperated utterance. He placed the head of his axe on the ground and propped one foot up on the dull underside of the blade. It looked as if he was giving up trying to hit the thing. His shoulders - once tense - relaxed and he exhaled heavily. He hadn't really been taking this fight seriously. But now he was just annoyed enough to want to give it some actual effort. If by "effort" one means that he was going to use a skill he always forgot he had to give himself an edge when he attacks.

"Oh you have got to be kidding me," Oscar groaned, shoving his axe head into the ground, resting against it while watching the frenzied warg rush to and fro about the battlefield. NIGHT sighed, too, wondering when the enemy would stop. "It's alright," she mentioned, trying to offer support, as she tracked the creature's movements. It began to creature dive behind her, from the side.

Here's my chance--!

Swinging her blade across in the opposite direction, she spun backwards, hoping the system would register her strike. With a light coating her blade, she struck the Venom Snapper from its side on its hind legs, right as it pounced on her, biting at her shoulder. As quickly as it sank its teeth into her, it yelped in pain, letting go of its grip and landed on the ground. It slid on the grass, struggling to get its foothold, before getting back up again.

"Just one more strike to do it in," NIGHT commented, adjusting her stance once again.

Oscar closed his eyes for a moment, happy to see that NIGHT was finally able to do some damage. After a beat, his eyes snapped open. Time seemed to slow as his senses were heightened thanks to the effects of his Concentration skill. He took hold of his weapon confidently and rushed forward, bringing the axe back to strike and put an end to this fight. But somehow, some way, he still managed to just barely miss the Venom Snapper. Despite the benefit of his Concentration skill, his axe sailed harmlessly past the creature's flank. He scowled and clicked his tongue, his frustration growing to a boiling point. If he missed with Concentration active, he wasn't exactly confident that his next attack would work either. Indeed, this warg was making fools out of the both of them. At least Oscar hadn't been the only one unable to hit the thing. That fact made him feel just a bit better.

One more strike, and if Oscar wasn't able to land on it, the task fell to her. When he took a swing, NIGHT watched the warg carefully, his weapon barely missing by a tail. Indeed, this had to be an incredibly lucky creature for it to have survived this long.

Well not if I can help it.

With abandon, NIGHT swung her blade around her, spinning as their target got closer to her. The weapon cut through its skin, a loud, visceral screech coming from the creature and it was ripped away through repeated slices. As the woman slowed her attack, letting Cyclone fade away, what was left of the wolf were floating sparkles, glistening where the sun hit the forest floor.

"Phew," NIGHT sighed, struggling to get herself steady from the sword art. "That was a lot more troublesome than expected." Turning to Oscar, she offered an extended hand after sheathing her sword. "Thanks for coming to help, and sorry about the chaos earlier."

As happy as he was that the Venom Snapper had been slain, Oscar couldn't help but feel embarrassed by his inability to hit the damn thing in the first place. At least the wolves didn't cause much trouble as they were quickly dispatched by Oscar's hand. This did, however, afford Oscar the opportunity to witness NIGHT's technique firsthand. She was quite skilled for being such a low level. After all, she had succeeded where Oscar had failed. He slung his axe across his back and gave NIGHT a bright smile. He wouldn't let this brief display of ineptitude get him down. He was just happy to help.

"Think nothing of it. I needed something to get me out of the house anyway. I hope you can forgive me for making you do all the work on the boss. You should probably grab that Venom Vial. You need it to turn in the quest."

"Venom Vial?" It took a moment for her to register that she was still on a quest, before she turned around in a panic. Thankfully, the glass container had only been toppled, unharmed, its contents gleaming from the sun rays shining upon it. She scooped it up by its neck, holding it up to examine the item.

The player had expected a dark, murky green, rather than the swirl of bright neon colours coalescing and splitting into different veins at once. NIGHT frowned as she kept the vial in her inventory, turning to face her companion when the menus had been closed.

"Thanks for reminding me," she added sheepishly, giving a small chuckle as she began walking. "And the fight was no problem. Although aside from getting some exercise out today, I was really hoping you'd be taking home something else for your shop." She folded her arms, still trying to process the creature's features in her mind. "That pack of... wargs? ... They really looked like boars..."

"... Do you make the sausages for your hotdogs yourself?"

Oscar had to stifle a laugh at the thought of using Warg meat in his shop. He would have been insulted if NIGHT hadn't been so sincere in her attempt to be helpful. So, he merely shook his head and smiled. "I appreciate you thinking of me, but Warg meat - especially meat from this Warg in particular - isn't very suitable for cooking. I actually do make the sausages myself. I actually make everything from scratch. Only the best for my customers, you know?" He crossed his arms and looked back towards the direction of Urbus. He could tell that NIGHT felt just a twinge of guilt for forcing Oscar all the way out here on a quest she could have done on her own. He couldn't very well let her keep walking around feel like that. What kind of man would he be if he did that? "You know, I really appreciate you giving me a reason to get out of the house today. Always happy to come give a helping hand. Even if it wasn't completely necessary."

@NIGHT

NIGHT wasn't too familiar with cooking, but even so, her exclamation of surprise, "Really?", was much more exaggerated than expected. "Ah, sorry for the trouble then. I kinda figured it was one of those poisonous-but-edible situations..." The woman continued to chuckle nervously, still coming to terms with the mistake.

Although, she was shocked to hear about Oscar's dedication to his craft. "Even for something like a hot dog stand... Making everything from scratch on your own, that's really impressive," she mentioned, thinking with her eyes trailing to the ground. "... I should try some one day," she added, glancing over to her neighbour. "I'm not much of a hotdog person, but I'll give it a shot."

"Also," she wondered, tilting her head when she looked back up at the man. "What were you doing at home that kept you in? Cooking? I figured adventurers around your level -- standing? Would mostly be out hunting and going on errands all day."

She shivered. Maybe that might be her one day, too.

"Oh Hell to the no. I'd kill myself," came Oscar's light-hearted reply. While it was true he kept himself busy, sometimes a man needed a day off. It just wasn't healthy to stay on the grind 100% of the time and not take the time to care for oneself. "There's gotta be a weekend, right? Even in a death game. No one's gonna get out of here if they burn themselves out. Sometimes you just gotta take a day off. Of course, this boss should have been easy enough to deal with that it would still be considered a break. But then I get here and can't hit the broad side of a barn." He shrugged as he ran his fingers through his hair to get the stray strands out of his eyes. "But you know, I can cook more than hot dogs. I just made the shop the way I did for the memes. You're not the first person I've fooled into thinking I can't cook anything else. I am a Rank 9 Cook. I can put together pretty much anything you'd want to eat, really."

"A weekend, huh," NIGHT repeated, lost in thought. Maybe the cutting words she advised a friend the other day had more truth to them than she realized. More ammo to her argument, she figured, but it was easy to forget to take a break sometimes. She continued listening to her conversation partner.

"I don't think you were too bad in the fight," she added, giving Oscar a kind smile. "You took out the wolves it was hanging out with, and to me that was more than enough. Plus, we've all got our bad days too." The player smirked, recalling. "With what little the warg seemed to be doing, it probably had a worse time than us."

At the news of Oscar's shop, NIGHT's eyes widened in delight. "Oh, shoot," she quipped in a whisper. "More reason for me to pay a visit then. Hope you won't mind if I request something extra fancy," she replied, grinning. "Though I'll try and stick in line with the street food theme theme you've got."

As the two arrived in town, the woman continued making small talk, curious, "So, you heading back to relax after this, I bet?"

@Oscar

"Probably," Oscar said with a shrug. There wasn't much else to do. All the quests he had outstanding required him to either grind up a few more levels or to party up. Asking NIGHT to tag along would probably get the woman killed. So, in the absence of an alternative, Oscar would just hang around the house for the rest of the day while he made preparations for something productive. "And please do order something challenging from my shop. I do love being tested," he said with a grin as they entered the tavern. In an out-of-the-way corner sat Gatsly. The poor merchant was doomed to constantly have his wares assaulted by the Venom Snapper until they could finally escape Aincrad. He turned to NIGHT with a grin. "Alright, just hand show Gatsly here that Venom Vial and the quest is complete!"

With that done, he waved NIGHT farewell and headed for the door. But not before sending the new adventurer a Friend Request. As he left, he left NIGHT with some parting words. "If you or your friends are ever in a tough spot, shoot me a message and I'll come give you a hand. See ya around NIGHT."
