[PP | FL 08] Scent of the Wild/Ferocious Foe

Recommended Posts

A particular quest had been flagged for the him. It was a quest that would involve only two people so he immediately thought of Haine. The instructions were simple. It was  to hunt a bear down and kill it. However,  the hunting part would be crucial to him. Amber eyes studied the information before making an informed decision. "Hey, sunshine." He carried her to her room the previous night and respectfully slept on her floor since he was too tired to move.

He had spent the night in her room but of course being who he was, he made no attempt to woo his lover. He leaned over and poked her cheek. He was going to make breakfast and head out with her to subdue the bear but only if she woke up. She was surprisingly a heavy sleeper. He poked her  cheek again. "Wake up, love. Got a quest we can do." He smiled as he stood straight up and walked to get her a glass of water in the morning.

She was dreaming again. The previous day and all of its quests had left her fatigued, muscles sore. After a nice, warm bath, she crashed without even having dinner. The man could not wake her up in her slumber, she swatted him away. She needed to rest up to regain energy for the next day's adventures. Bright and early in the morning, something poked at her cheek. She stirred in her sleep, a groan escaping her lips. "Guuuh..." She buried her face into her pillow, rolling to the other side of the bed. She rested on her belly. She pulled the covers over her head and curled up into a ball.

This was the routine sometimes. She slept like a rock, a stubborn mule when it came to punctuality. It just took a bit of convincing to get her up and out of bed. Kiluia, bless his heart, was fortunately patient enough to deal with it.

Her actions were extremely cute to him. This was a sight to see for him to witness. He had this to look forward to in the future in the same bed. He popped that bubble before it led to anything dangerous. Another poke again was given. This time it was to her side now. “Oh sleepy head.” He chimed in a sing song voice.  “Its time to get up or I’m gonna give Pingu and cubbo your breakfast.” A slight grin spread across his face. The thought that he could tackle her off the bed crossed his mind, but he had to do some serious business with more questing.

The ball she had formed was almost impenetrable. Almost. He pulled up a part of the blanket and investigated it. “Boo!” He was not very loud. He wanted to surprise her at the least. Or at least make her giggle for him.

"Nooo... go awayyy!" She rolled off to the side, almost falling right off the bed were it not for her love being there to stop her. The mention of Pingu and Miska getting to her food caused her to crack open one eye. He... wouldn't dare. She unrolled the blanket just a little to peek through it, to have some air to breathe. He was looking down at her with mock seriousness. She blew him a raspberry and rolled back into the cocoon. She faced the other way, ignoring him for a moment, anticipating his reaction. She had not expected him to grab ahold of it and pull the top open. She rolled around, pools of honey meeting his own. She squeaked at the impact and rolled back, falling onto the carpet. The padding buffered her fall as she giggled on the floor. Waking her up was a bit of a challenge sometimes.

He pulled the blanket off of her letting her roll out of it on the floor. He shook his head and sat on her bed before crossing his arms.  “We have things to do today, love.” He tried a serious looking face but failed as he grinned. “We are hunting a bear that seems to be terrorizing the area. It’s an in-depth quest and I’m hoping to finish it up quickly. Apparently, it’s a series.” He took the food from the familiars and tossed them each a piece of fruit. He placed the food on the desk and spoke. “Or we could just not. I don’t mind either way.” Despite saying he didn’t care, he was moving around the room and out the door. He was headed down to eat his breakfast now. “I’ll be waiting for your answer, love.” He spoke as he took a few gulps of his drink

She struggled against the blanket, her limbs still heavy from fatigue. The prospect of a quest was not so thrilling yet, with sleep still at mind. With great effort, she willed herself to uncover the blanket. She was wearing her long sleeved pajamas with cloud patterns on them, adamant on coziness. The oversized sleeves drooped down her wrists. "Hunting a bear?" She  commented, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. It was a little earlier than she'd liked to be up, but she assumed his disturbance was for a good reason. His option of opting out caused her to halt in her tracks. It gave the illusion of choice, knowing full well she'd want to help him. He would be embarking on it, with or without her, and that was enough incentive for her to get back on her feet.

"Wait up!" she called out, stumbling through the corridor. Wait, she wasn't properly dressed yet. Haine twisted on her heel and took a moment to freshen up. Once that was over with, she made her way down to the kitchen, dressed in battle garb. "I'm comin' with," she announced, hands on her hips. A pleasant aroma stirred her senses as she tailed him over his shoulder. "Ooo, what's cookin'?"

Pingu and cubbo trotted out from her room with her food. It was legitimately eggs that were poached with a hollandaise sauce. The sauce was lightly drizzled across the top with a biscuit. Beside it was a fresh cut berries and pieces of toast. “I am making our lunch when we go hunting.” He looked at  her and smiled. “Its just some fried chicken pieces shaped like nuggets. I’m trying to restore a little balance here in our lives here. Also, the sauce is made from nuts, some bark from outside, and a sauce I found on floor 9. It literally tastes like honey mustard.” He was proud of testing all these combinations.

He leaned over and kissed her lips before pulling away. “Go eat breakfast before the Kids eat it.” He referred to the familiars as their children as they were indeed child like and would love to get into loads of trouble.  On the countertop, she would see other desserts and food ready to be packed away. He would wait til she ate to leave.

The dish was all but calling her, the delicious aroma wafting in the air. Her stomach growled on cue and she clutched it. "Ah, damn, I'm starving." She pecked her love's cheek. "Thanks, love! Don't mind if I do." She slipped into the open seat, grabbing her utensils. With a quick word of thanks, she tore away at her dish. The sauce and the eggs melted together in delicious harmony. "Mmm!" she hummed, through a mouthful of food. The kids, surely enough, were hounding the table. Pingu hopped onto the chair in front of her, outstretching a sneaky fin towards her plate. Miska, less intrusive but just as annoying, was sitting at her feet, looking up at her with his beady eyes. Haine rolled her eyes. "C'mon, you butterballs had breakfast already!" She reached for the butter knife and pointed it at the bird. "You, down."

Clearly phased by her threatening aura, the bird settled into her own seat. Tch, greedy humans. Across the table, she'd noticed Kiluia had no plate. "Where's your food?" She tilted her head.

Kiluia had his own food to eat while he was preparing. He looked up at her as popped another puff pastry into his mouth. He chewed a little bit before walking over placing a slice of Japanese swirl cake he had been perfecting on her. He placed  a kiss on her forehead before sitting down beside her “I’ve been eating what I have been making. I prefer to eat while I work. Which I am done.” The mess was cleaned up as he went along and all the items in the inventory.

He leaned on the table with both hands placed under his chin. He tilted his head as his elbows propped up his head. “So you ready to go whoop some ass for a bear? The details are we have to hunt for it first and then use the crystal to get it to lose certain parts of its ability. I don’t wan to miss any detail that could give us an edge.” He took a sip of her water before placing it down again.

"Cake?" She made grabby hands at the pastries. It was like a miniature buffet, with so many options it overwhelmed her. Kiluia's experiments made for occasional feasts, she wasn't complaining one bit. She started with a cake-like pastry, a delicious chocolate marble with buttercream on top. The airiness did not fill her as much, there was room to cram more. She moved to the buttery puff pastry, washing it down with a glass of cold milk. With a heavy sigh of satisfaction, she set the mug down. Her belly was beginning to feel heavy. She had to pace herself lest she slipped into a food coma.

The quest specifics didn't seem too challenging. She'd heard rumors of a quest similar to this, it was something she'd had on on mind. "Is this scents of the wild?" The woman inquired, forking another bite into her mouth. Miska was sitting in the chair beside her, begging. "Fine." With a sigh, she fed a piece to the cub.

He looked at her down the food and drink without a care. He would have to make to keep up with her at times. “Good guess. It’s the one that progressively gets harder over time. I wanted to tackle it with you while we had time together.” He figured she was plenty strong and that she would leave him soon for the front lines. Before that would happen, he would spend as much quality time with her to clear quests together and just to be in her presence before he was robbed of the experience. He cleared his throat slightly before handing her a napkin.

He reached over and pulled open his HUD. A message of the details of the quest was sent to her so that she had the information as well. The penguin and cub could tag along since they were trained enough to do something along with them. He pointed at the little short sword and the penguin waddled to equip herself with it along with a cloth hat. "I wanna keep making memories."

She nodded along, she had full faith in their abilities together. They were both heavy hitters on the field, the thing couldn't stand a shot in hell. A message popped up on her HUD for the quest details. The information had only confirmed her belief, it would be an easy fight. "Ahh, look at its evasion..." she thought aloud, pointing to the screen. Even then, it shouldn't be a problem. Swiping through her inventory, Haine found a stock of handy consumables to blow through. "Lucky we got these!" She tapped at the lullaby. "That should knock em' out."

As he continued on, his question softened her heart. "Of course, when are we not together lately?" she added, with a soft chuckle. She returned to her plate, forking another bite in. It was true. As of late, as the two grew closer together and adapted to the world's changes, they were attached at the hip. She reminisced the sweet memories they'd made and prospected more to come. Along to the sides, Miska was searching for a battle garb. He dug out a red handkerchief and padded up to Haine, dropping it in her lap. "Feelin' red today, bud?" She picked the cub up and set him on her lap, typing the bandana around his fluffy neck.

"There, all done!" She realized she was missing something, however. How could she forget? "Wait!" Haine fished around in her inventory and pulled out a snack. "Here, your buff food, love." She handed it to him.

The words of when she spoke when they are not together. “I figured you’d be off to the front lines soon…” He would let the bubble pop before gathering their things. He took her hand escorted her out the door with their items in tow. “Oh don’t forget to give me the accuracy food. I almost forgot to ” She handed him the food before he even finished his sentence. She was pretty good. He flashed her a smile as they headed down their path of the house to the teleport gate. The town was full of hustle and bustle but it was time for them to go.

Not too long, they arrived to the designated floor. The floor was indeed a forest. The town wasn’t as busy during this time but it was still packed with people moving around. Despite being surrounded, he held her hand and moved about fluidly without touching anyone around them toward the exit of the town where the Forest seemed thick already. He blinked a few times at the fauna that was there. This would prove difficult for them to find bear. “Lets start hunting dear.”  He glanced at her. He took the poached egg and ate it.

The duo traversed into the wildnerness after a quick breakfast. Their familiars would have to stay behind, as they were not well trained enough for her to feel comfortable bringing them along. Pingu, as irrational as ever, could throw them into the fray without a chance at stealth. She'd have to train her later today. Lush greenery creating them as they steppe into the forest, a shady gloom hovering above them. They were nearing the enemy's territory now.

"I think this is the area," she thought aloud, gaze fixed upon her HUD and her map location. The sound of something snapping alerted their attention to the source. Out there in the distance, lo and behold, lied Kumatetsu. She looked back at Kiluia and grinned.

"B I N G O."

Finally, Haine equipped the lullaby. She crushed the crystal, a mesmerizing cadence escaping from it. The sound of the lullaby drove the mob closer inward.

The roar was excruciatingly loud. It shocked him as he watched the large bear stand on its hind legs yelling at the two. He blinked several times before he realized he had to move. Hand automatically clenched and he got low. Despite the height difference, Kiluia launched himself up in to the air and his right hand pulled back. The force of impact from his fist to the bears jaw sounded like a shotgun going off sending the bear reeling backwards. His eyes honed in once more at the bears chest sending a devastating heel kick into the sternum.

He landed gracefully beside Haine. He looked at the bear that seemed to stumble backward. Doing this by himself may of proven a bad thing but none the less, it was exciting. They would have to do the same with the next creatures on the list since this was a myriad of quests. “You are up, love.”

Out from the foliage came Kumatetsu, a giant bear dwarfing the two in comparison. With every movement, its massive body caused the ground to quiver. She fell back as Kiluia swooped in for the kill, delivering a devastating uppercut to its bulky frame. The bear staggered back, leaving plenty of room for an opportunity to strike. She skirted along its sides, pinpointing a blindspot near its rear. "Alright, batter up!" She spun the spear and backed up to provide ground. She picked up momentum as she sprinted forward, vaulting herself off the pole. She landed on top of the great creature's back, grasping onto its fur with her fists. She drove the spear through its spine. With a resounding crack, the thing fell forward, flinging her off its side. She fell to the ground with an oof, face first. Lucky for her that she could not feel pain, that would've been hell.

The bear was nothing more than a pile of crystals now. Amongst the disintegrating crystals, there was a statue. He had heard what the statues could do but they had to collect all of the statues for it to work. "Good job." He looked over at her with a smile. He returned the item into their slots each. They would both have one but he'd end up making  a trophy room one day. For now, it would sit in his room for the time being.

He pulled a drink and a biscuit from his inventory. It would be a fine snack to eat  when traveling  back home." You know… the front lines will need  you soon. " He looked at her. "When do you plan on going with  Raidou?"He didn't want to admit she was going to leave him but it was bound to happen.  They were growing at an exponential rate. People would notice.

She dusted the matty fur off her hands and propped them on her hips. In place of the crystalized body was a tiny statue, embodying the spirit of the bear. It looked just like a miniature stone version of what they'd just battled. She touched it, feeling the weird sensation of being submerged within the forest. Her senses heightened to take in her surroundings, the smell of the moss and the greenery. It was kind of adorable, the statue. She threw it into her inventory for safe keeping.

She followed behind the young man as he went on about something she failed to address to him, something which was absent from her own thoughts. In truth, she didn't want to think about what he was asking of her. Haine was not ready for that responsibility yet, she had the illusion of power in a controlled battlefield where she knew the gist of the outcome, her power creeping up slowly yet surely with the grind. She was still human after all, afraid of one thing: death. What if she messed up or miscalculated a move? The team would depend on her and she would depend on the team as well. Her expression faltered a bit as she looked away from him, fixing her gaze on the tree tops.

"I know," she bit back, a little too hasty without meaning to be. She swallowed it back and worked a soft smile on her lips. "In time... I don't think that I'm ready for it yet."

The sound of her voice  faltering was confirmation that she was indeed telling the truth. There was a point in time where he thought she would spare his feelings but it mattered not anymore. He slipped his hand into hers while taking a sip of his drink. They casually  walked back toward town and he handed her the drink  as well. "No matter what your choice is, I accept it." Eyes softened abit as he squeezed her hand. He was  slowly reaching the point to where his strength was originally. It was fast but not  fast enough.

He never told her why he chose the route he did. Today, she would know."I don't find myself useful. Even when I'm out in the field with you guys, I feel weak. So I chose this treasure hunter  business. I could come with you whenever you are leave so long  as I remain useful. I don't  exactly  know how long that'll be but I will try to be by your side." Truth was, he wanted to be with her even in death. She probably knew the reason but he solidified it with his words.

She knew deep down that there was purpose beyond survival, an inherent drive for satisfaction.  She poured her all into Firm Anima and its activities, helping her fellow guild mates, but sometimes she stopped to reflect. She would remember her beginnings and swore to never return to that state, living in fear and relinquishing her fate to the hands of others. She sought for control, the reason behind her diligence in the first place. She'd worked up a point, it was near time to decide where it would lead. But for now, she shoved those overwhelming thoughts aside, brushing aside her bangs.

Kiluia's revelation struck a chord in her heart. All along she'd admired his resolve, his perseverance to grow and protect those he loved. His facade was impenetrable, one of confidence with a brilliant head on his shoulders. It wasn't often that he revealed his vulnerability. Her eyes softened in acceptance. "And I'm glad to have you by my side," Haine added, her hand squeezing his.

Time was aplenty, she would figure it out.
